Worst single of 2004 thus far

Can't currently see past Alistair Griffin and 'Bring It On'. But should I be considering myself fortunate that this currently represents the peak of 'orridness for me in terms of singles released in 2004?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Still only January, buddy. There will be innumerable sins visited upon us by May.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Aye, just having had to sit through the whole of that and Amy Studt and 'Ladies Night' and Katie Melua thus far today, I'm a bit anti-mellow at the moment.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

OH, and here's Motorcycle. It just gets better and better.

Today's chart competition - hang out backstage at Top Of The Pops with Wes AND Tim Kash, possibly at the same time.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Tim Kash was actually a made-up character?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be about Maroon 5.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Amy Studt's an early contender, definitely.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't hate the Maroon 5 single. Which confuses me, cos I feel like I should.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Michelle McManus... esp. considering how it's hogging the top spot.
Amy Studt is awfully pointless, yes, though not really as detestable as the above, as it seems to have tactfully disappeared without trace!

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, here's some Chris Moyles banter. Grand.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(in other chart news, Hey Ya! is top 5 this week)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(top 4...)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like yesteryear isn't it? Songs climbing left, right and centre... well, actually two of the good recent ones; Kelis and Outkast. :-) Not forgetting Jamelia's "Superstar" last year.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a quality top ten, only two real blemishes (Michelle, Osbournes). I'm starting to like Gary Jules too.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

One can hope that Kelis may climb again... probably will prove a forlorn hope, but well, who knows how well McManus' sales will hold up. Nobody spoil it... as i've not looked at any midweeks.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

And Michelle wins again. Bother.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure how anyone could enjoy hearing the Maroon 5 song in its entirety.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Not enjoy, just not hate.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well... no need now... :-( Who on earth is buying the Michelle McManus nonsense of a single?

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

feels like a conspiracy to just not release any decent singles to battle with Michelle - nothing has actually been released this year which actually says 'i'm a number one single' - that said it's been quite cool seeing 'Milkshake' - probably Kelis's most 'uncompromising' single yet and one of the Neps most minimal tunes yet remaining on the pop side of the coin - come so close.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Next week I reckon it's gone. Pink will most likely take the top spot.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink's new one (not "Trouble", but the other one) is pretty fucking awful. Oh, and fuckin' "Change Clothes" makes me want to....blah blah blah.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Stereophonics have a new single which manages to outdo Alistair Griffin and Amy Studt for teeth-grinding shitness, and maybe even Michelle McManus as well.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Change Clothes was last year.
2. Its great.

djdee2005, Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

JC Chasez, easily.

Joseph McCombs, Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink's new one is very poor, yes.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Tim Kash was actually a made-up character?

I did some TV work with him a few years ago when he presented on pisspoor channe; Network Of The World, broadcasting videogames news and music bllether to Saudi Arabia (troo fakt). I can confirm that he was actully a very sweet a funny lad. Not surprised in the least that he's got so far, though i haven't seen TOTP since he started presenting...

stevie (stevie), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Toxic -Britney Spears.

I think her time is def. up now.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

toxic's great!

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

erghhhhhhhh it's terrible!

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

toxic's great!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

it really is. the video is total batshit insanity, too.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't seen the "Toxic" video. I imagine it's pretty awesome, right?

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 26 January 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to confess that Pink's new video gives me a stiffy even though she usually makes me barf.

Iam Anonentity, Monday, 26 January 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

toxic's great!

mullygrubber (gaz), Monday, 26 January 2004 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, just forget i mentioned it okay?

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Monday, 26 January 2004 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

toxic's great!

I've heard a lot of mediocre singles so far this year but nothing that really brings out the hater in me. (I've only heard Michelle once, not heard Griffin at all, have avoided all of the Nu Rock that seems to have infested the top 40)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Toxic is the one with 'sexy jeans', yes?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No, sexy jeans is "Outrageous".

The worst single of 2004 is so clearly that Offspring one.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The only one that's really got me annoyed thus far this year is the Boogie Pimps.

Phoebe Dinsmore, Monday, 26 January 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Toxic's great!!! The video clip is best thing ever!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually kinda don't mind "Toxic" either. I mean, it doesn't sound like it was recorded by a human being (but then....none of her records do), and I like the stuttering beginning. I also highly approve of the video's cyber-RunLolaRun-slutty-assassin vibe.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The ice man thaws!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just heard Elbow's new single.... worst single of mankind's existence on earth so far.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Toxic," and the song before and song after it on her CD, and the wacky bhangra remix of the Madonna duet at the end, and (mostly, and probably obviously) the song with the Ying Yang Twins and banjos.

The single that has ANNOYED me the most so far this year if "Fuck It I Don't Want You Back" or whatever by Eamon. I'm not sure if it's a good kind of annoying or a bad kind of annoying yet, though. I'm leaning toward a bad kind. But at least it doesn't bore me, right?

chuck, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
InMe have a new single out.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 30 April 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

toxic is easily britney's best single.. and everyone knows black eyed peas little OWN the worst single category these days..

chris andrews (fraew), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I repeat: InMe have a new single out. Anyone who can hear that and then think Hey Mama is the worst single of the year has a wide variety of screws loose.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Toxic's great! I retroactively crammed it onto my 2003 MP3 CDR (along w/Felix da Housecat's "Cyberwhore"; that is not a mutual commentary, thx)

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I like that Maroon 5 song now. Usually if there's something that aggressively irks me I'll end up digging it eventually.

I'm voting for Chingy's "One Call Away" now.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

!!! - "Pardon My Freedom"

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ever heard that song that goes "I hate everything about you!!!"

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I finally heard Maroon 5 at a record store yesterday. I thought it was JC Chasez "going rock"!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely that gives it far too much credit!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I think that's a pretty good description!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 30 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No way, totally JC Chavez lacks the personality/charisma/talent to do that.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 30 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Just put "totally" after JC and you got yourself a deal.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 30 April 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

JC's single is one of the best of the year

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 May 2004 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess this came out last year, but I still want to kill Jet everytime I hear "Do you want to be my girl?" Someone probably said this already, but I'll keep screaming this until Jet are stopped: They're just playing "Lust for Life" with different words and a little stop-time!

(Truman Capote), Saturday, 1 May 2004 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

that Narcotic Thrust single. Apart from having the worst name not yet being used as an uber-zeitgeisty moniker for some UK post-punk/post-electroclash club, I've just seen the video earlier this morning which consists entirely of complete boilers with pompoms and bad hair and rings through the centre of their noses hog-style whose sole purpose is to flash their gussets at camera every five seconds in the course of some highly malcoordinated dancing, so re-emphasising my hate. It's almost as bad as the song itself (vapid hi-nrg trance balls with chronic lyrics that are beyond any amusement value), so they kinda suit each other. but even still, oh god, who buys this..

I hazard a guess the new InMe is as bad, mind..
And that bleeding Eamon thing is total musical entropy too, like some death-paced swingbeat Stereophonics ballad (or at least with the same life sapping effect)..

pete badmusik (pete badmusik), Saturday, 1 May 2004 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I just remembered (sorry BugAnvenger..)

I believe they're re-releasing That Fucking Jet Song again too, in time for the summer/festivals I assume. oh jesus etc..I think we have a winner for the second year running...

pete badmusik (pete badmusik), Saturday, 1 May 2004 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Narcotic Thrust have gone trance?

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 1 May 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

In a thump-thump way. I don't know. not really that trancey I guess, moreso hi-bpm stuff Dave Pearce loves. trancey hard house?! i don't even really know for sure what that is, in all honesty. My brain had turned to sponge by the time it was over though...

pete badmusik (pete badmusik), Saturday, 1 May 2004 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah I've heard it now - it's a complete ripoff of their own remix of Cassius "The Sound Of Violence"! Terrible vocals too, sounds like those godawful Victor Calderone/Hex Hector neo-handbag house tunes.

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 1 May 2004 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

There was this terrible four/five member girl band on CD:UK this morning called 'The 411'. They did a song which was trying for the sweeping, majestic strings-blessed girl-you-gotta-holla-wit'-yo'-girlfriend slow-jam r'n'b thing, but it came across more like slightly aunt-like Mis-teeq dressed up like secretaries gathering for a 'Sex In The City' party.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 1 May 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
there's this painfully indie song by a band called "gisli" that i've seen on mtv twice now. it's one of the awfullest things ever. if someone wanted to make an amerindie parody record, it could only sound better than this. and there's a bit where the singer (in a lyrical conceit that has him detailing the once-coolness of now-squares) reveals that "lots of hip-hoppers used to like rock and roll".)

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

MASS DESTRUCTION. There is no contest.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

That "Girls of FHM" "Do you think I'm sexy"

Yeah, it's poor. But: Who would actually buy it? I can only think: Girls that go out clubbing/fighting/sheffield city centre docs...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, someone else got subjected to Grisli?

Also, I still think Chingy is friggin' dull.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Top three:

1. Faithless- Mass Destuction
2. Jamie Cullum- Frontin'
3. Michelle- All This Time.

No further bets please.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only person on Earth who has heard that song "Coochie"?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Could someone please tell me why they think the new Faithless track is so bad?

Michael B, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it sounds like "Police Officer" by Smiley Culture in a parallel universe where it's the worst song ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a single which has the vocals of Maxi Jazz, the smugness of Maxi Jazz and presumably the lyrics of Maxi Jazz, three of the worst things ever.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Could someone post some 'Hey Mama' vitriol to help me figure out if it fully sucks, or should I listen to it without the video? Currently:

The BEP are still good dancers and snappy dressers.
But also indescribable twats (less so for Apl 'cause he shuts up, just shuts up, shuts up).
Fergie wears a short skirt.
But I ain't Calum and think she's an utterly indescribably smug twat.
The other dancers are total spazzes.
But there are some funny cheap graphics.
The song, production and vocals and all, is merely a showcase for Will. I. Am's ego (and the team groupie).
Oh, fuck it, this sucks.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Their new single, with the mobile phone product placement in the video, is even worse.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the latest from Franz Ferdinand

Jon Williams!!!!! (ROFFLE!@!@!@) (ex machina), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Mama is the best thing BEP have ever done. It's hideous, but it's miles better than "Shut Up" or "Joints & Jams" or "Request/Line".

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The latest efforts from BEP have done much to erase the ire I held towards them for putting out a completely booty song with Macy Gray. The "Hey Mama" remix is fantastic and really the best part of the video is the subliminal dig at Justin Timberlake.

(xpost "Weekend" and "Clap Your Hands" are still worthy, ed-o.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Dan. "Smoke machines and la-za baymes" is IRREDEEMABLE.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Basically, Black Eyed Peas were put on this earth to stop me from enjoying life. "Oh, Where Is The Love came out of nowhere!" they say. No it didn't, because obviously every time I turned a TV on to a music channel in the last six years I've been lucky enough to see every single one of their supposed underappreciated unknown singles. ARRGHH MAKE IT STOP PLEASE etc.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't mind 'The Boogie That Be' in a club a few months back, and I have some affection for 'Shut Up' but only because of the video dancing (again). 'Hey Mama' is clearly going to confud\se me for the rest of my life and Edward, you're otm.

The funny thing about the subliminal dig at Justin is on Top Of The Pops, Will's all like, "yeah, Justin is the only popstar you'll see dancing in circles, that takes guts, Michael Jackson and Ursher, they don't do that, yeah, Taboo saved Justin's life last night and now he's on our song, did you know I'm a fashion gangster?"

Actually, I can't spot the subliminal dig, Dan.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ywah, what's this supposed subliminal dig?

and ugh, I just saw that Faithless video this morning. what is up with MTV suddenly slapping "buzzworthy"/"spankin' new" on all these crappy videos that have zero chance of being a hit? Stereogram? Bumblebeez 81? what the fuck is this shit?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stereogram thing is top 10 somewhere at the moment. Can't remember which chart.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that's no excuse

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Bumblebeez81 = Blink 182 e-mail envy gone wrong.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard the coochie song dan, I started a thread on it!

Train's "Ordinary" still owns this thread.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, I just heard "Ordinary" for the first time the other day - he's singing as though HE IS SPIDER-MAN. That is nuts.

But it's still not worse than the Black Eyed Peas "Hey Mama" or Hoobastank "The Reason."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The subliminal dig: Fergie's t-shirt in the "WE ARE 70s" montages in the "Hey Mama" video says "HANDLE YOUR SCANDAL" on it and as she's shakin' it, the entire band keeps pointing at it. It looks like they're pointing at her bouncing breasts (and let's be honest; they probably are).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(also teeny WHERE IS THIS THREAD?????)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rakes - "22 Grand Job"

Maybe not the worst, but certainly the most overrated.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the dig was "Nice dance moves, no, really!" but what the hell. I really like that "Handle Your Scandal" tee.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ric-a-Che "Coo Coo Chee"

billstevejim, Friday, 5 November 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"1985"

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 November 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Fatboy Slim - "Slash Dot Slash"?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 5 November 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dirty Vegas. That schmaltzy ick thing about walking into the sunset or whatever the hell and I don't even want to know the title or I'll start hearing it in my head.

Thea (Thea), Friday, 5 November 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the new nas single has to be up there

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 5 November 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

billstevejim, you have three first names, which is twee, so stop hating on girl-pop. fefe dobson will kick your ass and so will my daughter.

actually, the second sentence isn't true.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

if your daughter is the gm of the red stars it is very true

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

that's my brother's daughter, who is two years old. my daughter's team is the bunny hop and they're gonna get their butt kicked this weekend BY ME.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah jay fiedler's gonna light it up haha

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Eighth World Wonder" (or whatever it's called) or "1985".

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Eighth World Wonder is pretty awful but there is a delightful DISCO mix that completely redeems it.

Slash Dot Dash does sound like a late contender.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with colin on "eighth world wonder"

hey blount both of my QBs are on bye weeks! and fiedler's due. plus, if he has a shitty game and my daughter wins, that's a good thing, right? i figure I can't really just THROW a game, that's unethical and i'm the commish like proto-chiklis.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

man i should put "fiedler's due" on the excelsior thread

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

billstevejim, you have three first names, which is twee, so stop hating on girl-pop.

Me hate girl pop? Tha'ts unpossible.

billstevejim, Friday, 5 November 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

yr list just seemed a little skewed to me, but maybe it's cause you listen to a whole bunch of it so fefe and the duffs and joss stone came up more often, so okay, I take it back like a time machine

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"new kicks" "eight world wonder" and "slash dot dash" resonate with me as truly noteworthy horseshit. simple plan's "Welcome To My Life" deserves the brown eye.

i usually hate these lists though.

I'll totally defend "just lose it," "1985" and "Cold Hard Bitch." Because I think Fountains Of Wayne needs to be more Blink-182 (and vica versa), I'm glad SOME indie fops are actually using the sonic elements of prime-era AC/DC rather than just buying the shirt, and "fellas! WHAT? fellas! WHAT? grab your left nut, make your right one jealous! what?" cracks me up every time (along with a dozen other hooks in that track, for all its sloppiness).

miccio, Friday, 5 November 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yr list just seemed a little skewed to me, but maybe it's cause you listen to a whole bunch of it so fefe and the duffs and joss stone came up more often, so okay, I take it back like a time machine

NICE.

What. the. fuck?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

o man at first i thought you were listing that djdee!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 5 November 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Its better than the song it samples!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 5 November 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

We'll see, maybe I'll hate it less in a week or 2.

billstevejim, Friday, 5 November 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

something by New Found Glory should make the list, but distinctions aren't cost-effective (as xgau would say).

miccio, Friday, 5 November 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

o dee i wouldn't go that far! i do like that it's the first definite concrete example of at-bat music inspiring/impacting a pop song.

Joe Nichols - "If Nobody Believed in You"

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 5 November 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

There's some new Pierce Brosnan flick out soon and the TV trailer contains a gurn-thud gruntrockified cover of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love". I reserve judgement for now, but I just wanted to bring it up just in case.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

No hate for "flap your wings"?
I'll nominate.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 November 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Counting Crows, "Big Yellow Taxi", unless it was actually released in 2003, in which event it knocks Jann Arden's "Love Is The Only Soldier" down to 2nd worst of 2003.

teehee! i find it amusing that this was their biggest selling single but from their worst selling album (and this was a band that used to sell shiteloads of albums....)

Dykehouse - "Chain Smoking"

On its own, possibly forgivable. But the way it ruins Midrange...goddamn!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 5 November 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

'What You Waiting For?' or "Do Shut Up, You Stupid Ho."

Hey Mama is the best thing BEP have ever done. It's hideous, but it's miles better than "Shut Up" or "Joints & Jams" or "Request/Line".
-- edward o (edwardo...), June 22nd, 2004.

I think this settles it. I think the video affects my judgement of the track something fierce (the second half of the video with the BEP dancing is a moment of redemption), but I think it's good for a dance.

[spiderbait x-post]
no way! it sold less even than their Au Go Go stuff? (actually haven't they been doing pretty badly with the last few records anyway?)

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 5 November 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fell In Love With A Boy" and Jet both good answers, but JoJo's "Leave" is pretty striking, too, in its way: I mean, ok, it's basically just a watery forgettable R&B track, except there's those enthusiastic cheerleader backing vocals that act as if it's "Hit 'Em Up Style" or something, and they just drive home how lifeless the track is and how JoJo really doesn't manage to sound even slightly miffed, just sort of sadbored. Last year's retro-Britney teen hit was Stacie Orrico, and this year we get this??

(JoJo herself is cool, tho, from what I saw on TRL.)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 5 November 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

so no one on this thread has heard "Radio" by Robbie Williams then?

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 5 November 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's such a natural fit we somehow keep forgetting it.

Artist : Joe Nichols

Title : If Nobody Believed In You

Genre : Country

I watched him take the two strike call:
He hadn't tried to swing at all.
I guess he'd had all that he could take,
He walked away, for goodness sake.
His father's voice was loud an' mean:
"You won't amount to anything."

That little boy quit tryin',
He just walked away.
There were teardrops on his face.
Tell me, how would you feel?
You'd probably give up too,
If nobody believed in you.

That old man said: "One more try"
"I know I'm not too old to drive,
"I promise, son, I'll do my best,
"This time, I'm gonna pass the test."
"Give me the keys, Dad, an' get in."
His father never drove again.

That old man quit tryin',
He just turned away.
An' there were teardrops on his face.
Tell me, how would you feel?
You'd probably give up too,
If nobody believed in you.

We take His name out of schools.
The lawyers say it breaks the rules.
Pledge of allegiance can't be writ,
An' under God, should not be said.
I wonder how He will take.
I just pray it's not too late.

What if God quit tryin',
He just turned away?
There were teardrops on his face?
Tell me, how would you feel?
You'd probably give up too,
If nobody believed in you.

Tell me, how would you feel?
You'd probably give up too,
If nobody believed in you.

"Frontin'" by Jamie Cullum isn't very good either.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ouch. That song Chuck posted could sound like Captain Beefheart singing for the Bar-Kays and I'd still nominate it for easy worst single of the year.

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"mass destruction," on the other hand = great. (and the rest of the album is pretty good too. now I know what example to use whilst complaining about electronica-snob rockism, ha.)

elrod hendrix, Friday, 5 November 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you a caucasian or a poor Asian, Elrod?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I've just noticed that no-one's mentioned 'I Believe My Heart' yet...

Chuck and Mr. Snrub both OTMFM. I ranted about this song yesterday. I think it's the worst single because the songwriter (I don't think Joe wrote it) tries to rhyme "writ" and "said." Idjit.

i'm tempted to concur, though all I can remember about it was thinking "ok until I am in another relationship I don't want to hear another self-serving corporate-merger girl-may-i-propose-a-civil-union-cuz-you-hot-and-not-in-my-way track in my life"
