The best song ever recorded in the history of humankind was "Everything's Gone Green" by New Order

BUT THIS SONG DIDN'T INVENT GREBO!

Grebo Guru, Friday, 10 September 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

My least favorite single of theirs, actually. Worst track on Substance by a country mile.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

IM GOING TO START MY OWN GREBO BURRITO TAPENADE AND TIRE EXCHANGE BOARD!

Grebo Guru, Friday, 10 September 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Grebo, eh? What have Mega City 4 and Gaye Bykers on Acid and Ned's Atomic Dustbin and...have to do with it?

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Your forgot Crazyhead!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I give up. Were the Wonder Stuff supposed to be "grebo" too?

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Crazyhead, yeah I remember that name. Good god. Grebo.

How ridiculous.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Wonder Stuff & Ned's = POST-grebo.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

But anyway, "Everything's Gone Green".....not New Order's finest.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

A hush fills the room...expectantly...

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually like this one.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I lived in a world where Ned's Atomic Dustbin were remembered fondly instead of with derision. This will earn me big points with ILM, I'm sure. Card carrying member and all that.

Grebo Guru, Friday, 10 September 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned's Atomic Dustbin were remembered fondly instead of with derision

I remember them very fondly. I even picked up their abortive reunion album (well, live reunion album) which didn't even feature all the original members (One More No More). I still love a few of their early tracks, but they honestly haven't aged very well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Coincidentally enough, I listened to "Grey Cell Green" yesterday and it's still great.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked them but I had the bias.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"Grey Cell Green" is awesome, yes.

i remember seeing them live on their first NYC appearnce (with Swervedriver opening, no less) at the late, lamented Marquee on 21st (now a Latino dance club....yeah, we really needed another one of those). The Ned's were hyperkinetic. I've never witnessed that much endearingly needless leaping about.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

was?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

A bit of credit to their last album, please? Haven't heard it in years, but at the time, I was pleased with the way they progressed. B

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My computer is getting weird on me, refusing to type when I say so. Makes a "ding" noise instead, sorry folks. See ya later.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I lived in a world where Ned's Atomic Dustbin were remembered fondly instead of with derision.

Don't worry, you do. I have nothing but happy memories of being 14 and bouncing around my room to "Kill Your Television". GOD FODDER may not have aged well in that it definitely sounds like something that was recorded in 1991, but it's still a damn fine album.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 10 September 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: "Everything's Gone Green", not even in New Order's own top 10.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 10 September 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

...that's `cos it's not very good, and even they know it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

EGG is in my New Order top 5 definitely. So much to love about this, their first sequencer track. The huge echoey, spacey gaps between the instruments - sounds like they were playing in an aircraft hangar, the way that it sounds like they were making it up on the spot, Hooky's outer space bass, the bit when Steve's live drums come in, Barney's whooping, great lyrics. Maybe it's their best actually - I will go downstairs and put my copy of FBN 8 on the turntable later on.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 September 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm with the good doctor. procession/e.g.g. is probably my favourite new order single, barneys whoop at the end is the sound of them discovering fun.

zappi (joni), Friday, 10 September 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

procession is awesome, and was for a while my favourite track on Substance. E.G.G. i like but wouldn't make my top five..

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Friday, 10 September 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Procession" completely kills "Everything's Gone Green".

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop talking about Grebo or I'll bring up the Libertines' Mantits.

EGG is an amazing song. Not sure it's the *bestest* New Order song ever, but it's pretty up there.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 10 September 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The full 12" version of "Everything's Gone Green" is awfully close to being the greatest single ever made as of any day. In the aftermath of Joy Division, it's the sound of a group of bereaved people finding their way back out into the world again. In Movement they're still clearly in mourning, trying as much to sound like the old Joy Division as possible, trying to hold on to that world because they're scared there's no other world for them to go to and they'll end up being flung into limbo. It must be right, that's how Ian would have done it. But on "Everything's Gone Green" you hear the sound of something new being born...an indication that there is a way out, that there is a future to look forward to. The song begins by asking "Help me, somebody help me - I wonder who I am" and ends with the aforementioned ecstatic whoops. It's one of the most poignant records in all of pop.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Friday, 10 September 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Best description of EGG I ever heard was that it was New Order trying to be Can.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

New Order trying to be Can would be the best thing ever. Hence why I like the song.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 10 September 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

**The full 12" version of "Everything's Gone Green" is awfully close to being the greatest single ever made as of any day**

On the money!

**In Movement they're still clearly in mourning, trying as much to sound like the old Joy Division as possible,**

A long way OFF the money, IMHO. I think Ceremony/IALP was the mourning recd. Movement is meloncholy at times yes, but definitely there's light and hope - they're trying out some fantastic NEW (i.e not what Joy Div would've done) ideas here, in fact the album is brimming with them. Many of them involve M. Hannett's unique sound-squeezing techniques. That they never really followed up with any of the possible directions that Movement mapped out is a shame, but at least we have the album itself - their best. Mind you, the direction they chose to go in wasn't bad was it?

The rest of what you have to say, Marcello, is absolutely spot-on. I played the 12" this morning - the section from around 3 mins to 3.20 is f-cking amazing - the track jogs on the spot, then that synthetic crescendo that fades-in and unleashes guitar and bass for the final ecstatic run-out is spine-tingling. And we get the first Barney whoop! Another great moment is when Steve starts hitting the hi-hat disco-style earlier on (after a minute or so).

Procession - yes fantastic too. The band hate it!

Of course the best way to own EGG is on the FBN8 12" with Cries and Whispers and Mesh on the the flip.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 September 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

that is a GREBT bit Dr C (the just before the whoop, bit). i love this song. not their best, but still a MASSIVE CHOON

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 10 September 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Alang!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 September 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course the best way to own EGG is on the FBN8 12" with Cries and Whispers and Mesh on the the flip.

That is absolutely correct.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The full 12" version of "Everything's Gone Green" is awfully close to being the greatest single ever made as of any day.

Completely and absolutely OTM. I love playing this single out (or even when I'm in at home).

not directed at you hstencil, i'm just amused at the sudden rise in 'best song ever' threads.

kephm, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it is a little weird but hey it's ILM.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I was mistaken about the disco hi-hat. It starts at 0.17 and then drops out between about 1 and 2 minutes. I was referring to when it comes back in around 2 mins.

Another great thing about EGG - the way that Barney and Hooky's voices are out of synch ('I'll hurt you when I can' & 'It seems like I've been here before')

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Although with Hooky, you can't be sure if that was intentional or not.
And even if it wasn't, it's still a happy accident -- I agree that it sounds great.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

weird is good.

"everything's gone green" is my favorite new order song by far. the cover art is my favorite peter saville work too. i actually have the 12 inch for this framed and on my wall.

I read that that cover was by stephen and gillian, not peter.

tricky disco (disco stu), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

unfortunately the US version has a different cover:

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

well it's a good cover too, just not as good as the UK one.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the US one - i had a massive poster of it on my wall at college. (obv)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I love "Everything's Gone Green" madly. Best thing about it is the opening misdirection--you think from the intro that it's going to be a certain kind of song, and it hangs onto the little bass vamp for a second, and then abruptly it's a totally different song and the one hinted at by the intro never comes back.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked the cult thread bettah

That's because of its lazer-like accuracy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Those are different, Joel. The first one is Everythings Gone Green w/ Mesh and Cries and Whipspers, the second is the 81-82 ep which is that ep plus Temptation and Hurt. But i get the naming error mixed up...Cries and Whipsers is actually Procession?

http://www.niagara.edu/neworder/

http://www.niagara.edu/neworder/singles/8182ep.html

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought all the US pressings had that design.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

they are different records, the one you have is the 81-82 ep which compiles the Temptation/Hurt single with the Everything's Gone Green/Procession/Cries + Whispers/Mesh single.

re-reading some New Order website I've come accross this again:

http://www.niagara.edu/neworder/compilations/fbwl.html

which brings up the fact that some of NO's earliest sessions were recorded at Wester Works, which is Cabaret Voltaire's studio. That has to be my dream collaboration, if they had worked together anytime in the early 80s. Throw in a John Robie remix and I'd be in heaven...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

oh okay I thought the EGG single as such didn't come out in the US.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It didn't, that's what the FACUS 81-82 ep we have is for.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

the FACTUS single is the main reason I bought a record player. I fuckin love every thing about it.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 10 September 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

okay Dan so I referred to FACTUS as the US version of the EGG single, I didn't claim they were exactly the same thing.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

we're splitting hairs...it seemed like you said the 81-82 ep WAS the EGG single, I just pointed out the difference.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the FACTUS ep is great! I paid big money for the CD version a few years ago after it went out of print.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the CD version on a trip to quebec during summer camp. Had never seen it before and rarely since, and am proud to own it.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 10 September 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

What do we think of Murder....?

ihttp://members.rogers.com/james.shum/images/NewOrder/downloads/fbn22.jpg

mzui, Friday, 10 September 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"MURDER" is FANTASTIC

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

great track, i agree. this is how techno should have sounded and i would have loved it. you really think movement is their best album, dr.c.? i am surprised. because i thought the same. but somehow i doubt movement could pass the test against technique and get ready. it's very heavy. and it definitely is the band's requiem for ian curtis. the lyrics of one song as i remember them are about ian hanging in a room. but there is something about this album. it's not just joy div without ian, it is more new order without the dance.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

_Movement_, _Technique_ and _Get Ready_ are the three great New ORder albums. If Barney had been capable of singing on the singles, _Low-Life_ would be up there, too.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

_Movement_, _Technique_ and _Get Ready_ are the three great New ORder albums.

haha, quite possibly my three least favorite New Order albums (though I'd probably sub Brotherhood for Technique.

EGG is fabulous, perhaps the only New Order single that continues to grow on me after fifty listens or so. How anyone could say that it's the worst song on Substance when "State of the Nation" exists is beyond me.

"Murder" is fantastic.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

**But i get the naming error mixed up...Cries and Whipsers is actually Procession?**

Cries and Whispers and Mesh's titles are reversed on the cover of FBN 8. I don't know about the FACTUS EP, since I don't have it. To further confuse things the track named 'Mesh' on Substance is actually 'C+W', but C+W is correctly named on the Box Set. The FACTUS EP wasn't only a US release, it was widely available over here too.

**which brings up the fact that some of NO's earliest sessions were recorded at Wester Works,**

Yes, they tried Kevin Hewick for singer. The only recorded track out of those sessions is 'Haystack' from one of the Crepuscule (I forget which) compilations. It's also on the Kevin Hewick reissue CD on Cherry Red, which ALSO has the EP that KH did with The Sound. There are crap quality boots of other stuff that NO did at the Western Works including 'Homage' with Steve Morris singing.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

how fucking awful is the beginning of temptation on substance after egg. that is like falling from a pedestal of about ten thousand miles height.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(I like every version of "Temptation" and "Confusion" that I've heard.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone for : Taking Sides - Ceremony (3-piece version) v Ceremony (with Gill). The former has never been out on CD.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone prefers the version of "Temptation" they hear first.

I heard the Substance version first, it's my favorite song of all-time.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post. So do I Dan, but the orig Confusion 12" is best.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't argue with that!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i can remember finding a cassette version of that "1981-1982" EP and getting really excited - the tracklisting had times beside the tracks like Everythings Gone Green 23.20 Temptation 19.45 (not the exact numbers, but similar) - of course it was all a lie, i was sorely disappointed.

zappi (joni), Friday, 10 September 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never been too high on "Murder". The b-side was "Lonesome Tonight", though? THAT'S where it's at. Best use of phlegm in the history of music.

Movement_, _Technique_ and _Get Ready_ are the three great New ORder albums.

It seems I've finally found the Get Ready appreciation thread. On another NO thread I said it was their best after "Technique" and was met with the deafening sound of indifference.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I always assumed that "Lonesome Tonight" (which is also brilliant) was the b-side to "Thieves Like Us", but that had an instrumental version as the b-side, didn't it?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I love murder, and all the rest of the early singles. I really can't fathom a universe where Get Ready is considered a New Order masterpiece. Movement means a lot to me, and Doubts Even Hear easily ranks as my favorite new order song in their catalog, but that probably says more about my joy division fanatacism than anything else.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

*Checks*

We were both kinda close: "Lonesome Tonight" was the b-side for "Thieves Like Us". The "TLU" instrumental was the b-side of "Murder". They were released only a month apart. Easy to get confused.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(sorry, that's an xpost to Dan)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I just realized I put that the FACTUS ep on my ipod, I'm listening to it right now

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

FACTUS mislabled the final song as Mesh, but it is actually Cries and Whispers. Mesh is correctly labeled on Substance. I like Mesh more than Cries and Whispers, just by a bit.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

is the first version of ceremony not on the box set? is it available on slsk under some kind of identifiable name? to this day I still have never heard it.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure I trust this challenge to Dr C.'s Factory authority.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, is mesh the song that has the lyrics:

once out of reach
we never speak, we never compromise...

or is it the song with the lyrics

though the desire, the empty sea
something something fears, all we ever see

we made a contract, filled with snow (or something)?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread may clear up the confusion, or maybe not.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

("Mesh" is 3:25, and "C+W" is 3:02)

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've read about this before on the New Order Online website and everything Dr. C described above fits the way I remember it. The only place Mesh is correctly named is the 81-82 EP.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

you can get the original version of Ceremony on a Rhino records post punk comp.If you are interested i'll go thru my collection & get you the name of it.By the way the original version is much better.Really it's the last Joy Division track.Always makes me sad & think about what could have been.Though New Order turned out ok.

evan chronister (evan chronister), Friday, 10 September 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The problem is that on the other thread Dr. C says the 81-82 EP is mistitled, whereas on this thread he doesn't venture to say. It would make sense for him to make that mistake, though, since he says he doesn't own the EP. Those who own the EP know that the song on it is a different song than the one on Substance, so it's impossible for him to say (as he does in the other thread) that Mesh is mistitled on *both* Substance AND the EP.

Murder is an interesting little quirk in their career, but it took me years to really appreciate it.

xpost

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone prefers the version of "Temptation" they hear first.

Actually, this is one of the few times when I liked a song more after I heard a better (Substance) version of it.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

no, this mesh thing is still confusing me. the EP lists a song called mesh, and Substance lists a song called mesh, and they're two different songs. I was under the impression the song on the EP was actually Cries and Whispers. Surely someone knows?

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 11 September 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

when I put the 81-82 cd into CDDB/iTunes, it says track 5 is "Cries and Whispers (mislabeled as Mesh)" It is 3:01

though the desire, the empty sea
hopes and fears, all we ever see

we made a contract...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Thieves Like Us" / "Lonesome Tonight" might be their best a / b single ever.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 11 September 2004 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what I said Kyle, they are two different songs and I repeat: the ONLY place where "Mesh" is correctly named is the EP. Dan, iTunes is wrong.

"Thieves Like Us" / "Lonesome Tonight" might be their best a / b single ever.

Not that they've ever been known as they greatest of lyricists to begin with, but the lyrcs to "Thieves Like Us" make me wince.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. Perhaps today but I know back then when I heard it I didn't give a flying crap. It's still a gorgeous song, musically.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 11 September 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, about the Mesh/Cries & Whispers drama: Anyone else who thinks databases from corporations with employees who probably don't give a damn about these things are the de facto authority on these matters gets a slap on the ear with a wet fish. Try trusting Factory fans first, in the future. okthxbye

And god bless the 81-82 EP with the only truthful title. God came down and sat on my turntable the day I bought that record.

only "AND IT CUTS YOUR LIFE LIKE A BROKEN KNIFE" bothers me. The rest is quite lovely.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 11 September 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

back then when I heard it I didn't give a flying crap

I mean, I didn't give a Dave Matthews.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 11 September 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

**The problem is that on the other thread Dr. C says the 81-82 EP is mistitled, whereas on this thread he doesn't venture to say. It would make sense for him to make that mistake, though, since he says he doesn't own the EP. Those who own the EP know that the song on it is a different song than the one on Substance, so it's impossible for him to say (as he does in the other thread) that Mesh is mistitled on *both* Substance AND the EP.**

What you say here is correct Bimble - just to clear up the confusion on the other thread I thought when people referred to the EP, they meant FBN 8, not the FACTUS EP.

Kyle - the song with the lyrics 'Once Out Of Reach etc etc' is C&W.

**is the first version of ceremony not on the box set? is it available on slsk under some kind of identifiable name? to this day I still have never heard it.**

Not on the box set, no. I don't know about slsk, I don't go there! It's 4.34 (I think) and the Gill version is 4.23 ish. You can get it on the 7" FAC 33 and on a few versions of the FAC 33T (white sleeve with a blue stripe). I think there is no way to tell which one you're getting if you buy FAC 33T.

**you can get the original version of Ceremony on a Rhino records post punk comp.If you are interested i'll go thru my collection & get you the name of it.By the way the original version is much better.**

That's interesting. I'd like to get the name of that. The band don't like the original and that's why it hasn't been on any official NO compilation.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Saturday, 11 September 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew I wasn't a total utter and complete NO freak compared to some of you (even though I'm a freak by everyone else's standards) -- but after this, now I'm scared of you all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

as far as Ceremony is concerned, I always preferred the version on Substance, which I'm pretty sure is the same version as on my 7", the one with the copper looking cover. It was only at college when I first heard the version on the white 12" that seemed slow and less angsty/energetic.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

No, those versions aren't the same.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 11 September 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

for ceremony, if you have the 7" then it will be the original version. the white/blue 12" might have the original, it might not (mine doesn't, for example). if you have the green/gold 12" you don't have the original.

the original certainly has more of a joy division flavor to it. if you're really curious and don't slsk, email me.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Saturday, 11 September 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

and of course i got the 12" versions backwards... green/gold has the original, white/blue has the re-recorded version.

Kites and Whippets

HA HA HA HA!! Heaven help me breathe, Jesus. Good one, Ned.

The copper coloured sleeve of Ceremony represents the original version. I can't say I prefer it to the Substance version, but since it's my nomination for most beautiful song ever it's quite possible someone could do a death metal version and I'd still swoon over it. The original version is slower and comes out sounding a little rough, like they hadn't quite rehearsed it enough - which of course you can look at as being part of it's charm etc. I hate to split hairs over this.

As far as finding it online, I found the original version about two years ago on a non-Soulseek file sharing program as being listed as "Joy Division - Ceremony (original)" despite the fact that of course Ian C. is nowhere to be found on it and it matches the version on my copper coloured 12". The length is 4.40 and I renamed it on my computer as New Order - Ceremony (Original). I had it up on slsk for a long while but just haven't been on slsk in about two weeks. Regardless it seems to me you shouldn't have a problem finding it. Especially since my Substance CD tells me the other version is 4.23 in length.

Dan I am so overjoyed that as of today you are no longer a C&W virgin. [sniff sniff - grabs tissue, feeling like a parent watching his son/daughter get married]

Whoops.

Bimble (bimble), Saturday, 11 September 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

still confused, I have to a/b them, but my copper 7" version feels energetic in a way I remember the substance version to be, while my radio station's copy of the white 12" felt slower and not as exciting. I have to a/b/c them all I guess to really make sense of it all.

the name of the rhino comp is Left of the Dial postpunk chronicles.Rhino is releasing a 4 cd 60's box with the same title oct 5

Furniture, Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

so does that new order box set have a bunch of the 7" and 12" mixes of the early singles that haven't otherwise made it to compact disc? b/c when i worked in college radio i heard a lot of those 12"s and in some cases much preferred them to the "substance" versions i had been familiar with.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

no, the box set is a mess and is lame, at least it seemed so, looking at the track listing. it has some of that stuff, and some of a lot of stuff everyone already has, and some live stuff no-one probably cares about.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 11 September 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I care.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 September 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

touching

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 12 September 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Movement is meloncholy at times yes, but definitely there's light and hope - they're trying out some fantastic NEW (i.e not what Joy Div would've done) ideas here, in fact the album is brimming with them. Many of them involve M. Hannett's unique sound-squeezing techniques."

I was listening to Movement this morning and realised it's the New Order album that Disco Inferno seem closest to in both sound and intent - all those spectral synths and sonics in the mix are only a decade of technological advances away from DI's midi-soundscapes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 12 September 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i really need to hear this disco inferno

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Sunday, 12 September 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you do amateurist! I think you'd like them.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 12 September 2004 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw that 'substance' comp (on dbl cassette format) yesterday with EGG on it. If that isn't the 12'' where can I hear it?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 12 September 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It is the 12" Julio.

so does that new order box set have a bunch of the 7" and 12" mixes of the early singles that haven't otherwise made it to compact disc

No. But I disagree whith Kyle in that the Retro is a mess. Some of the dance mixes are inessential, but the live stuff is 90% ace and CD5 is good with Best & Marsh, Such A good Thing, Let's Go (original version), the video version of The PErfect Kiss, the full length Elegia and a brutal version of Transmission amongst others.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Sunday, 12 September 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ok sorry I got confused when talk of the box set came up.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 12 September 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but the the fifth CD was only in a limited number of copies of the set. I haven't seen it since the month it came out. dumb! I just wish they hadn't put any already-available stuff on that set.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

that fucking disc 5 of retro was such bullshit. it was like 'oh yeah this box set sucks, here fans, have at it.' I ordered the 'special edition' from amazon as well and didnt even get disc 5. obviously I have pent up issues regarding this ugly little episode..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

in my mind I like to pretend that there exist, somewhere, demos of Doubts Even Here and Dreams Never End with Ian on vocals.
