B2D, I highly recommend checking out: Si Soy Llanero. I think you might like this. It's Colombian joropo, whatever that is (well, it's this).

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 31 October 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

R_S, I will promise to do that if you promise to listen to Sergent Garcia's La Semilla Escondido. It's Cuban reggae by a Spanish guy from Paris. It will probably end up in my top five.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 31 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Can it be loved on the basis of brief audio clips? Because I think all you need to get interested in this Si Soy Llenaro are the brief clips (because this style jumps right into the action immediately). Anyway, I will check out this Sgt. Garcia album in some form.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 31 October 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, R_S, you're on. I will begin my investigations soon. and read my review of it to see if it sounds like the kind of thing in which you'd be interested.

frankE (frankE), Sunday, 31 October 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Begs2Differ, I can't find Sgt. Garcia to download, but based on some audio clips it doesn't really seem like something that would interest me much. His take on Cuban music might interest me more than the reggae cuts (which seem like they are just going to kind of sit there), but I'm not that interested in timba to begin with, which is the Cuban music he seems to mostly be drawing from here.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 31 October 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If I included reissues, my top ten of every year would probably all be reissues. So I don't.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 1 November 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

ahh, in the zone's from last year. no wonder noone else had put it on their list.

have the jc chasez one.. three or four really cool songs. but his sleeve photos look NOTHING like him! (way too flattering)

lydia, Monday, 1 November 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, ITZ was a) released fairly late that it's eligible for lists and polls (published and unpublished), much like Justified and Stripped last year. And b) the Madonna team-up was such a red herring (albeit not a bad one) that the album took months'Toxic' to be fully digested.

"Way too flattering", eh? He can do a decent photo or two, but his ADLIDAS vid is pretty defining as a look. Incidentally, you just reminded me of my own nonsense theory that the film Way Of The Gun is in fact about JC and Justin.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 1 November 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The real hangover from last year which is going to be omnipresent in year-end lists is of course Tasty.

I don't fancy JC, not at all, not in any picture or video I've seen.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Traditional music that tastes good and is not just good for ya.

Somehow this description just saps the life out of it. There are a thousand (well maybe not a thousand) features of the music that are more noteworthy than whether or not it's traditional. (Granted, in a live performance that might be harder not to focus on.) This CD doesn't remotely sound like a museum piece.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 November 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't fancy JC, not at all, not in any picture or video I've seen.

But I hear he's a fantastic conversationalist!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm kinda surprised r-kelly's mentionned. i really like happy people (the album) but thought it was a huge commercial/critical failure. i've asked this a couple of times now but was it a success in the US ?

I have gotten very tired of College Dropout (save "Two Words") by this point.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 November 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Wolf Parade - Wolf Parade EP
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
Madvillain - Madvillainy
The Futureheads - The Futureheads
Tom Waits - Real Gone
Mastodon - Leviathan
The Hold Steady - Almost Killed Me
Golden Apples of the Sun - V/A
Our Endless Numbered Days - Iron & Wine
Old Man Gloom - Christmas

So far. My jury is still out on the new Blood Brothers, Isis. Bjork, Kanye West are close, but haven't seemed to have the necessary staying power for me. Maybe Death From Above could find their way on there. The Fiery Furnaces album has just never done it for me -- maybe not enough patience on my part.

pm, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you'd like Plus-Tech Squeeze Box, nza.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

6. Arial Pink’s Haunted Graffiti 2. The Doldrums. Paw Tracks.

8. The Fiery Furnaces. Blueberry Boat. Rough Trade.

Could change if the new Sightings and Eminem turn out to be good.

I'll check 'em out, 'rima! Your recommendations are always spot on. It's like you have a window wherein you can look into my SOUL and see the empty spots that need filling.

I must admit that the Green Day album is far better than it has any reason to be.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Their website looks like it was designed by GENDY TARKOVSY or whatever her of DEXTER'S LABORATORY fame's name is. My curiousity = PIQUED.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Your recommendations are always spot on. It's like you have a window wherein you can look into my SOUL and see the empty spots that need filling.

Haha, thanks, bro, but way too much responsibility ;-)!

(also, check www.surla.co.uk and www.vroom-sound.com, which have sample mp3s. The Genndy stuff is also the cover art and there are t-shirts!)

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I'm sold. I love them already!

Two more honorable mentions I've forgotten, and have listened to since last posting here, reminding me of their status as honorable mentions: Wolf Eyes - Burned Mind and Medeski Martin and Wood - End Of The World Party.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Nicka, have you heard the new Comets on Fire? I really think you'd love it, given your propensity for the dank nuggs.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall check! OMG I am getting all the killer recommendations today.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so tired right now it's hard to think of my favourites, however, first of all I should say I must check out |:'s suggestions asap.

I guess, Dizzee Rascal-Showtime is my favourite album this year, also have enjoyed the Ada and Michael Mayer albums alot, the Nextmen's Personal Golf Lessons mix, Super Discount 2, the Get Physical mix is definitely top 5, Tiefschwarz mix may get there in the end too.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Junior Boys - Last Exit
2. Annie - Anniemal
3. Sondre Lerche - Two Way Monologues
4. Ghostface - Pretty Toney
5. Dizzee Rascal - Showtime

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

on reflection the Tiefschwarz mix really does deserve to be in my top 5, whenever I actually make one. all those remixes one after another makes it quite awesome. like the neptunes/daft punk/felix da housecat twisted into a big corrugated sheet of metal.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

am i the only one who loves the new kings of convenience? come on open your ears that's by far the best release this year.

Alex, I LOVE LOVE both "Misread" and "I'd Rather Dance with You," but the rest of the album leaves me a bit cold.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 November 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

As for EP of the year, Mates of State's gorgeous "All Day" edges out Sing-Sing's "Madame Sing-Sing" for me.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

1. THE HOMOSEXUALS Astral Glamour (hyped2death)
2. THE FIERY FURNACES Blueberry Boat (Rough Trade)
3. THE THERMALS Fuckin A (Sub Pop)
4. BOREDOMS Seadrum/House of Sun (WEA Japan)
5. ARTHUR RUSSELL Calling Out of Context (Audika)

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Brian Wilson - Smile
2. Magnetic Fields - i
3. Tom Waits - Real Gone
4. Dead Prez - RBG
5. Ween - Live in Chicago

This is literally everything else I own with c2004 on it that is not a reissue or best of:
Wilco - A Ghost is Born, Air - Talkie Walkie, Prince - Musicology, PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her, Kanye West - The College Dropout

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm...

Fennesz, Venice is still top. First of the Devendra albums, the Mountain Goats album, there are more but my mind is porridge right this second...

am i the only one who loves the new kings of convenience? come on open your ears that's by far the best release this year.

It's good, yes, but I can't just put it on any ol' time and enjoy it. I have to be in the mood. Stuff in my top 5 constitutes albums I'll stop whatever I'm doing just so I can listen to them.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys - Last Exit
Dizzee Rascal - Showtime
Cee-lo - ... Is the Soul Machine
Fennesz - Venice
Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat

Only 2 of these are out and out fantastic (though I did avoid any compilations or reissues)

Le Dust Sucker & Anniemal sitting just below

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

On reflection, whether I buy it or not (and I can because Sur La Plage have kindly imported copies to the UK), Plus-Tech Squeeze Box will make my top 5. Their first record is better than my entire top 5 (sorry, guys), and between the new mp3 snippets and remixes, they've never put a foot wrong.

That leaves Tiefschwarz, Cee-Lo, Dizzee, The Streets, Fennesz, Animal Collective, Wolf Eyes, Arthur Russell, Michael Mayer, Felix, Le Dust Sucker, Black Dice and The DFA 3-disc set to investigate.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

new plus-tech squeeze box? sweeeet. no chance in hell of copies turning up in NZ tho.

junior boys - last exit
united states of electronica - u.s.e.
boredoms - seadrum/house of sun
felix da housekat - devin dazzle & the neon fever
blood brothers - crimes

& I need to listen to the dizzee, michael mayer, feelstyle, ada, most of the mixes ronan mentioned, the new dfa comp, lil jon, petey pablo, ariel pink & panda bear, new buffalo & re-listen to the streets. hasn't been a v.album-oriented year for me.

etc, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude! Thought I was the only ILXor who cared about PTSB. Maybe we should trade Cartoom! and New Buffalo, since that doesn't have a UK release.

Also, I have to relisten USE and Teedra Moses, tho' neither have yet struck me as top 10.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

etc, www.surla.co.uk have imported Cartooom! (oddly, instead of signing it and releasing it like they did with Fakevox) and I think they do Paypal etc.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all about the Sverige.

The Concretes The Concretes, Stina Nordenstam The World is Saved, Raymond & Maria Vi ska bara leva klart, [ingenting]
Ingenting Duger, The Knife Hannah med H Soundtrack...

Meanwhile, elsewhere...
Estelle, The Beautiful South, The Honeymoon, Kings of Convenience, The Streets, Magnetic Fields, Annie, Nick Cave.

I like all those, haven't bothered to work out a top five out of them yet. No idea.

Don't like:
Dizzee, Air

David Merryweather (DavidM), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Concretes - The Concretes, The Knife - Hannah med H Soundtrack

I'm not sure how to describe it. It's at turns playful and mournful Finnish folk. I think you'd like it.

sundar - its the 9 CD boxset, there's a thread.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

IT COMES WITH A FUCKING DEAD FLOWER. AYLER = EMOLER.

Sorry. Maybe Jandek "Shadow Of Leaves" belongs on this thread.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Madvillain has FOUR mentions so far yo.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait DOH I get it. I R DUN BASS.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ayler box is really something. I can't stop looking at it/listening to it-- the level of obsession and care taken with the packaging, the chrono arc of the songs on it, the BLISTERING playing. It is a record geek's rosetta stone. Nothing really beats the trio with Sunny Murray & Gary Peacock but still everything on all 9 discs is exciting.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Melissa what's the Espers album like, I've heard they're a bit ISB?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Stars - Set Yourself On Fire
2. Sebastien Tellier - Politics
3. Annie - Anniemal
4. Air - Talkie Walkie
5. Junior Boys - Last Exit

subject to change and memory.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles
Annie - Anniemal
Junior Boys - Last Exit
Bjork - Medulla
Prince - Musicology

Honorable mention to Fennesz - Venice.

Sansai, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Musicology and Medulla are in my top 5.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd agree with Musicology if it was an ep:

A1) What Do U Want Me 2 Do?
A2) Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance (with even more Rhthym guitar outro

B1) The Marrying Kind
B2) If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life
B3) On The Couch

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

in no definititive order...

Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld
Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
Elliott Smith - From a Basement on the Hill
Tom Waits - Real Gone
Brian Wilson - SMiLE

hon. mentions: Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free, Dizzee -Showtime, Erlend Oye's DJ Kicks, Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles, Fennesz - Venice

it feels like the appeal on some of these might be pretty ephemeral, tho. A Grand Don't Come For Free and Showtime lack the staying power that their predecessors had, I almost always opt for Bone Machine over Real Gone, and SMiLE, while pretty damn great, isn't going to get a lot of plays around here just because 15 year old me played the hell out of the bootlegs.

Ghost, however, is criminally underrated here. I don't think that album has left my arsenal since I got it in January. Fuck all this Junior Boys shit.

stephen morris, Wednesday, 3 November 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you'd like it.

btw, Melissa, Dawn Upshaw just put out this great set of songs by Messiaen, Debussy and Faure.

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dominique, thanks for the info. I second Mel's suggestion of Islaja.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree that the Ghost is better than the respect shown for it here so far. I'd put that in my top five. I'd also rate the Oneida album, the Stereolab album, the first Devendra Banhart, and maybe the Liars or Smile. It's too early to tell though, for me at least.

steve hise, Wednesday, 3 November 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Listened to the Islaja record a few hours ago. It sometimes reminds me of Greek mira singing, where the women mourn for the dead.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

its also very simliar to alvas "slattery for ungdom". will be in my top ten for sure.

:| (....), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Melissa what's the Espers album like, I've heard they're a bit ISB?

ISB? Maybe it's the election fogging my brain, but I can't think of what that would stand for. Espers remind me a lot of Vashti Bunyan/Linda Perhacs, but they're less serene than either.

btw, Melissa, Dawn Upshaw just put out this great set of songs by Messiaen, Debussy and Faure.

Ooh! Thanks, I'll check that out.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ISB - Incredible String Band. A less serene Vashti Bunyan sounds good to me.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, there's definitely an element of that.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Stars - Set Yourself On Fire

! No thread?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

TI isn't coming out til next year.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

mcd, you're a godsend. I didn't even know they put something out. I'll look for it.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree with patrick wolf, but that came out in 2003

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Sundar - yeah, I just got it. Wasn't really on my radar either, I'm sure the Chicago ilx massive is more in touch. Anyway, the record has such a casual & easy-going vibe, it's hard not to love.

mcd (mcd), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Casual and easygoing, wow! When I saw them with William Parker (and another saxophonist whose name I forget) a couple years ago they were cacophonous.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 6 November 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, for the mo:

1) V/A: Mei Lwun - Uno Records
2) Teedra Moses - Complex Simplicity
3) Dizzee Rascal - Showtime
4) Junior Boys - Last Exit
5) V/A: M.A.N.D.Y. - Get Physical 2nd Anniversary Label Compilation

From what I've heard of them Stina Nordenstam and Run the Road might muscle in there. What's the Crazy Titch thing you refer to Adam?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Brian Wilson - Smile
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Jens Lekman - When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog
Erlend Oye - DJ Kicks
Junior Boys - Last Exit

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Sunday, 7 November 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

2) Teedra Moses - Complex Simplicity

Be Your Girl sounds pretty if rather unremarkable in a mid-Nineties Mary J Blige in search of a tune kind of way. I haven't heard the album. Second best of the year though, really?

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim- Crazy Titch thing is the mixtape with Mr Wong and Vader, which I seem to like a lot more than everyone else.

I forgot Mei Lwun! and Superpitcher!

adam... (nordicskilla), Sunday, 7 November 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

is the Hood album coming out this year? that would probablybe top 5 if it did.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 7 November 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a new hood ep. it's out.

stomp (+dancefloor), Sunday, 7 November 2004 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree with patrick wolf, but that came out in 2003

2004 release on Tomlab for everywhere outside of the UK.

The New Hood ep (The Lost You) is fantastic. The full length isn't due until January.

"Be Your Girl sounds pretty if rather unremarkable in a mid-Nineties Mary J Blige in search of a tune kind of way. I haven't heard the album. Second best of the year though, really?"

Yes, it's a personal thing though. "Be Your Girl" is good and a real grower but nowhere near being one of the top tracks. Really I'm voting it up there for "Backstroke", the title track, "For A Lifetime" and "Last Day", which I've been listening to over and over and over again and have taken on some sort of emotional resonance for me. There's about another four tracks or so that are ace too though, making it a very strong album by R&B standards.

First listen to the Stina album suggests it *will* crack top five easily.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 7 November 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I still can't find that Uno Records thing. In this day and age that disgusts me. I think I forgot about 20 albums in my list earlier.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 7 November 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

new possible entries: The Ike Reilly Assassination, Sparkle in the Finish; Charlie Robison, Good Times

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 7 November 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now, I think my list would be something like

01 The Fiery Furnaces "Blueberry Boat"
02 Maxi Geil & Playcolt "A Message To My Audience"
03 Phoenix "Alphabetical"
04 Scissor Sisters "Scissor Sisters"
05 Annie "Anniemal"

I'm kind of avoiding considering Luomo this year, even though I only heard it this year (and was only released in the U.S. this year) -- it would just make things too complicated.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

What is definitely in the top five is the Liars record.

What is definitely not in the top five is the Streets record.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

b4r1ma - thanks for the info! if yr after the new buffalo, I'll see what I can do. how does what you've heard of cartooom! combare to fakevox?

Cartooom! is more pastiche-like, there's more spaciness, insanity, samples, d'n'b, funk and hip hop, the production is a little more refined and there are more in-song switchups. Fluxblog has an mp3 of 'The Martin Show' up now, though I can't get it.

People do not understand the concept of five.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

By the end of their time in the spotlight, neither did they. Although the life-size cardboard cut out in the video was amusing.

Is Junior boys the most frequently ranked album? A quick search suggests its listed 19 or so times.

Also, Anniemal with 11 top 5 listings and 5 honorable-mention/could-break-in listings.

I didn't really dig the Junior Boys on first listen, but Annie is definitely really fun and might squeeze onto my own list if I ever bother to make one.
