i just spent $43 (s&h included) for a copy of the boredoms' super roots 7. it is the most ive spent on a cd before. close contenders and other notables are as follows:

$34 - left banke compilation (gift for gf)
$31 - boredoms seadrum+house of sun
$28 - the pop group - y
$25 - my bloody valentine - you made me realise cdep
$20 - my bloody valentine - feed me with your kiss cdep

how about you? my friend spent $48 on the holy bible by the manic st preachers 6 years ago, only to turn around and sell it (the insanely sought-after canadian version, it was...) 2 years ago for almost $500. that was a brilliant investment. i guess im mostly interested in things you bought to listen to, not just to resell for profit, although that is an interesting topic, too. so, yeah - do both.

i hope this doesnt cheapen anything for anyone. im not so mercantile, im just curious.

Those Volume compilations have cost me around $45AUD new once or twice. Also a Japanese CD comp called "4AD 1986" or something similar, which has a bunch of 4AD eps from the time that arent on CD elswwhere - Frasier Chorus, Throwing Muses, Wolfgang Press and MARRS. I think that one were $40+.

That bites. I once traded a hard-to-find Jerry Goldsmith CD with a guy who sent me a CDR in return, including an extra CDR made from the CD I'd just sent (as, what, an insult?), but it didn't cost that much.

$20+ is very common in Canada for regular releases. I paid $50 for the album Koyo Habib by Aisha Kandisha's Jarring Effects from CDPlus. You never know how much will be added to the cost when when a cd crosses the border. If it ever arrives, this will be the most expensive cd I ever bought.

Speaking strictly of single-discs here, the most I paid was $35 CDN for a Japanese import copy (the ONLY copy, I believe) of John & Alice Coltrane's Cosmic Music. The RETAIL price was actually $45, but I had a friend working at Tower Records at the time.

I was PREPARED to pay up to $40 on Ebay for Bob Seger's Mongrel but managed to get it for only $31 - a bargain. (Regularly goes for $50 and upward.)

Should probably mention the $27 I paid for the Soft Boys' Raw Cuts, since it's a mere 6-song EP.

I heard that once many, many years ago - I had a girlfriend whose dad had spent a small fortune on a quad sound system despite the fact that there were only a couple of handful of quad sound albums about and he didn't actually seem to particularly like any of them (or indeed be that much of a music fan at all as far as I can remember - which I suppose would at least explain him buying a Mike Oldfield LP).

I was wholly unimpressed - but then, I was a snotty 14 year old at the time and very few things impressed me unless they were screaming and spitting and howling with unspeakable venom about something-or-other.

On the quadrophonic Tubular Bells you get extra Viv Stanshall commentary over the "Sailor's Hornpipe" at the end. He chases the instruments up and down the speakers. I was ten at the time, and easily impressed, cf. Fisher-Price Escape From Colditz board game.

Quad albums were a complete fib. There was some sort of 'channelling' the signal to appear more reverbery on the back speakers, that's all.

yeah i got the tape and recently the vinyl (2.99 on ebay .. only for it to go the following week for a LOT more .. go figure) .. but still search for the CD .. tis just one of those things .. i suspect if i heard it i would be severely disappointed (record deck out of action till 2005).. but its always in the back of my head when scanning the bins .. there are those amongsth the ZTT massive that it doesn't exist .. but it does i saw it in 88 (or was it 87) for 9.99 in Our Price in Leeds .. and let it go ..

My biggest waste of money ever: somewhere around $35 American for the UK import of UNKLE's Psyence Fiction. Which would be released domestically two months later. And clogs used bins for $7.95.

(I think that built up good collector karma for me or something, as I now own two copies of the "flames" cover of Street Survivors. the Bob Seger System's Ramblin' Gamblin' Man and a UK pressing of The Velvet Underground and Nico, all of which I found for $5 each.)

$100 for :zoviet*france: Mohnomishe. a little more than i should have, but i've never regretted it. esp. since Eostre ran me less than $30. and a buncha used titles in the $40-50 range - Skullflower Ruins, SCG 330,003 Crossdressers ..., MV&EE's Ragantula - which seems about right, given their respective followings.

i was completely willing to fork over $100+ each for the Can am des Puig Book of Am Vol. 1 CD and for the first Kiyohiko Senba & Haniwa All-Stars CD, but demand for these was so much less than i'd expected. i did overpay for Haruomi Hosono's Monad box, though. so maybe it's all about karma.

Usually if a CD costs more than $30 or so, I look for vinyl instead. It's strange how often valuable CD does not equal valuable vinyl, and vice versa. Game Theory's catalog being a good example.

yes, the CDs. for some reason, all that gorgeous :z*f: vinyl rarely commands the high prices that the first run of Charrm CD reissues does. criminal, really. and the sums for which Shadow, Thief of the Sun and the :z*f: Mort Aux Vaches CD often change hands are just plain ridiculous.
