OMG WTF LCD & MIA w/ DIPLO this WEDNESDAY EEEEEEEEEE!

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(and my fucking curse. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are playing this week here too. Which night? Yes, this wednesday. FUUUUUUUUUUCK! At least Melt Banana knew better to play the day after, and the Books the day after that.)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.summerloversunlimited.com/fly.gif

You get sloppy seconds biatch! ;)

LeCoq (LeCoq), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we get an afterparty, donut?

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

im so bummed -- they're not playing together in philly.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Looking forward to Sunday...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

sleepytime gorilla museum are grating as hell after about 10 minutes live. go see MIA instead.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoever Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are, they're not getting between me and LCD Soundsystem.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

How can they NOT play NYC? That's madness.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

LCD is playing NYC 6/10 with The Juan Maclean

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

and M.I.A. is at S.O.B.'s on june 7 and 8.

rajeev (rajeev), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going next Thursday (the 19th). Diplo is spinning at the afterparty.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - though i'm actually thinking about selling my M.I.A. tix. aside from no "bingo" on the setlist, i kinda got my fill with the knitting factory show and i can't see the S.O.B.'s show being too different. i dunno.

rajeev (rajeev), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

can you sell it to me? :-p

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps - a friend of mine already called dibs, but she is flaky. i prolly won't decide till near the show though. i can see myself getting more excited about it between now and then.

rajeev (rajeev), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post and off-topic)

Check the books live, yo! People were enraptured last night at the Empty Bottle - it was a damn nice show.

natedey (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I wasn't going to forgo LCD/MIA for Sleepytime... the latter are west coast and have a better chance of coming back sooner than the former. But I've been trying to see Sleepytime for over a year, and there's always a conflict.

Again, I have Melt Banana the day after.. so I can get my herkyjerky loud punchy quirky hardcore/metal/punk type rock fix, except in yelps instead of Grinch belches.

LeCoq is going to slime this tour before I get a chance to enjoy it clean and dry. The shame!

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

and I have friends that are going to force me to see The Books on Friday too. I'm gonna die from lack of sleep. Oh well.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Saturday in SF. who up in dis is going?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

600pm doors in Boston. show starts at 630.
$4.50 convienience charge.

david day (winslow), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

>SIGH

david day (winslow), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

David, they just want to make things convenient for you. How can you cry?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, in the case of the SF show--and the fact that Adult. are playing across town that night--i'd be willing to pay the bands an extra $4.50 to go on at 6:30... ;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, ADULT. are fun live, but I'm guessing nowhere near the league of this double line-up. (Adam the bass player looked really bored the last time I saw ADULT. open for Broadcast.. but maybe he always looks bored.)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

la show is sold out :(

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

uh-oh. that means i am getting chicago tickets after work today, then.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Jergins, are you suggesting we make an afterparty? Sadly I have to work the next day... but who knows.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going next Thursday.

Look, I read ILM!

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken, ADULT. are fun live, but I'm guessing nowhere near the league of this double line-up. (Adam the bass player looked really bored the last time I saw ADULT. open for Broadcast.. but maybe he always looks bored.)

-- donut debonair (do...), May 10th, 2005.

hahaha... well, Adam's a friend so i kinda gotta go, but i think they're playing late so it's gonna be quite a triple-header for me that night ;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the lcd/mia tickets are sold out in chi-town too. they had five tickets left on saturday when some friends picked theirs up.

natedey (ndeyoung), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

whos goin to the la show? can somebody help me out?

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

M.I.A.'s doing an in-store at the teeny Sonic Boom in Ballard. That's gonna be a madhouse.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Noooooo. Why am I an idiot?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck, I just checked Ticketmaster and you're right. Goddammit.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc, you can follow the advice of Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kott, who were on Chicago Tonight with Bob Sirat last night, and show up at the box office right before the show and hope to get media/friend/VIP tickets that are released at the last minute when those people don't show up.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, she's also doing an instore at Amoeba in SF on saturday. (not sure if this is already posted somewhere)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I am pumped for this show. I took the next day off work so I can stay out superlate. Yeah.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the Books reminder, I want to go to that. Not so hot on Mia Doi Todd, tho.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not going because I object to her politics and art school origins.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

JUST KIDDING!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

YA YA HEY!

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

M.I.A.'s doing an in-store at the teeny Sonic Boom in Ballard. That's gonna be a madhouse.

Yup, and earlier on Thursday, she's playing live on KEXP. Poor poor girl. Someone get her a fan and some Evian, girlfriend! (I won't be able to hear or see either, as I'll be a working donut)

Thanks for the Books reminder, I want to go to that. Not so hot on Mia Doi Todd, tho.

My friend has basically threatened me to go see The Books, so I have no choice. I've heard of but never heard Mia Doi Todd.

I'm on the fence about Melt Banana now. :/

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, that's an interesting idea, nick. i just posted a ticket wanted ad on craigslist.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

both her nyc shows are sold out, aren't they.

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be there this saturday.

one time gaffled 'em up, Tuesday, 10 May 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

just back from seeing the vancouver date and i have only two words for ya donut......ear protection!!!!

william (william), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

diplo will be at viceroy tmmw nite. since viceroy closes at 2 he must be heading over after they're done opening. i

supertwerp (supertwerp), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

william, how was the vancouver show? how long was MIA's set?

supertwerp (supertwerp), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Agree with william, it was LOUD. Glad I had my ear protection. MIA's set was great, she went like 45mins straight, lots of energy, lots of shitty dancing (which I really like, kinda like how I like bad photos). The crowd was super into her, even bringing her back for an encore (Hombre). I haven't seen that much dancing at a Vancouver show before. Usually everyone stands around.

I even got to meet M.I.A. a couple hours before the show wondering around Futureshop. She was nice, I was gushing, cause I've had a huge crush on her forever. But still, it went kinda like this: http://www.azizisbored.com/2005_02_20_azizisbored_archive.html#110935968591468841

pinder (pinder), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, do LCD Soundsystem cover My Bloody Valentine as well as Siouxsie? :)

I'll make sure to grab bar napkins for the ears at the very least.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Just got off LCD's tour bus, fucking BANANAS. Murphy is a hilarious BEAR of a dude. I'll post some pics soon of LCD in the back of my truck freaking the fuck out! INSANE show btw YEAH!!!!

Anyone from Portland coming up for this?

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Who IS going to the LA show now, exactly?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I barely post here, but I'm going.

Eric Seguy, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

who's going to teh phila show exactly?

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

donut, i think dj fucking in the streets is the first act, so diplo may just be on with MIA. but he is supposed to be at viceory tonite as well.

i'm relatively new around here so it would be cool to meet some ILM'ers tonite. already seems like everyone i know will be at the show tonite! maybe a post show meetup?

supertwerp (supertwerp), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit. Is the L.A. show sold out yet?

On a Strict El Cholo Diet (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to go to see them in Detroit, but then part of me is burned out on seeing anyone live.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Twerp, welcome! it's a weeknight, so I think most are going to stumble home after tonight, but I did propose the PRE-show meetup above. I guess go to the brewery and ask if "Brian" (or maybe "Michaelangelo" or "Matos") has a table going. I look like Fred durst with a beard and glasses, but no tattoos and I'm a foot taller than Durst.. (assuming Durst is 4' 10" tall)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

cool, hopefully ill see you guys tonite.
nima

supertwerp (supertwerp), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be at the show tonight and also at Viceroy after MIA's set if LCD suck like i expect them to. I only like about 6 of their songs and can imagine the swarming hipsters will make me want to vomit after an hour or so at the Snowbox. how many shaggy, greasy, black hair cuts with t-shirts that are too tight will we see tonight? black low-top converse get you free admission to the Showbox tonight! Free admission to Viceroy too!

biznotic, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(good grief)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit. Is the L.A. show sold out yet?

Yup. Sorry. :-/

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I only like about 6 of their songs and can imagine the swarming hipsters will make me want to vomit after an hour or so at the Snowbox.

Yeah, I'm sure Scott Giampino, the Showbox booker, would really appreciate that comment, biz.

Also, dismissing LCD by saying they have 6 good songs is like confronting someone by lightly whacking them with the back of your pinky.. as the "only good 6" LCD songs, live, could last well over an hour.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Biznotic, I missed you! "Six good songs..." How I wish I could have written six good songs. 6 out of 15, or however many LCD has out, is a pretty good average. Batting .400.

Donut, Durst? not how i pictured. Me, I'm bald and mid-tall and 31 and as I write this realize how unremarkable my appearance is. You'll never find me! Except i'll be cutting a motherfucking rug with a short girl with glasses and yelling 'donut' between songs. That's something.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

jergins, if that's your real e-mail, I can send you a link to actual photos of me, which I'm sure will help.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

woo!! i cannot wait for this show. i am taking a friend who has only heard me rave about lcd soundsystem and piracy funds terrorism and i expect my opinion to be vindicated.

what siouxsie cover have they been doing?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Slowdive"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.summerloversunlimited.com/lcd.jpg I GUESS you could call it car dancing.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the real one, donut. send it along. thx.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

...not that anyone gives a crap but while LCD played....i kept thinking "more cowbell".

and my ears are still ringing =)

william (william), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

LCD have the fever...

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be wearing my special red low-top Converse (cause I'm PMSing)
see you slobs tonight :)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

luckily for me, i don't know, nor care to know who Scott GiambooksforSnowbox is, unless he gets me in free.

i'll wear my blue converse and a Journey tour t-shirt that i bought for $15 at the Fremont market. i may wear a black beanie even though it's too warm and i'll be wearing some highwater black pants i got at Value Village. i'll probably be drinking PBR because even though it tastes shit, it's cool to drink. i may or may not see you through my greasy bangs.

biz, Thursday, 12 May 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

OH yeah all y'all that can't find tickets - mail me and I'll see what I can do (for a nominal fee).

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 12 May 2005 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ok. the crowd were great. MIA rocked, LCD Soundsytem are amazing live and i'm an ass for saying what i did.

biz, Thursday, 12 May 2005 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

luckily for me, i don't know, nor care to know who Scott GiambooksforSnowbox is, unless he gets me in free.

you can try asking scott next time, but given that he and his family are still having to deal with the repercussions of having their house go up in flames a few months ago (which is a total pity, since Scott gives up a lot to bring good acts to the Showbox... learn to spell, btw), you'd probably feel bad for asking.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, so if I were to be asked which show as better, Gang Of Four last Friday, or LCD tonight, I'd probably just give up and throw myself off a cliff, because I can die happy now.

DJ Fucking In The Streets did a really good DJing job for the show.. hurrah!!!

Diplo did a nice mini set beforehand.. the intro video to M.I.A. should NOT be missed! (HINT!). M.I.A. was fun.. but, and I'm a biiiig fan of Arular here, she, her cohort, and Diplo were definitely opening act material compared to LCD Soundsystem. I was about to go into detail about M.I.A., but LCD has just blown my brain away, so that part of my recollection of the show is now gone.

James Murphy has far too many on-stage micro-mannerisms to describe, but they all exist, and they all make him one of the most endearing and positively insane frontmen in rock today.

The band (james of course, nancy on synth, percussion, dancing.. pat on drums.. tyler(?) on bass/moog... and someone whose name I don't know on guitar/bass/drums/miscellany).. my fucking god. I think James's comment "OK, raise your hand.. who thought we'd look cooler?" was really telling, because they were the coolest band ever, because there was no attempt to be concerted about being cool on stage. They just gave 110% to playing.. you couldn't ask for more.

OK, the show in general... so you know there are the two versions of "Yeah", right? the Crass version and the Pretentious version. Well, imagine the live show being the Crass version of the entire album and songs for the set! Again, not a musical comparison, but it's like listening to MBV, and then seeing MBV live... it's fun and colorful in headphones, but absolutely explosive live. I don't know if I'm making sense yet.

Anyway, if you STILL have a chance to see this show, and you give up on it just because you forgot, YOU ARE A SUCKAH TO THE MAXXXXXX! You will be so extremely sorry, you'll throw yourself off a cliff, because you'll NEVER die happy!

Am I enthusiastic enough? Am I making it clear how much I liked the show? No? Ok, I'll try again tomorrow.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, here's the set list! Morley and I were up front right next to the drummer.. Morley had the fortitude to grab the list for me. I owe her bigtime. :)

http://www.mackron.com/random/lcdsetlist.jpg

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah donut i agree with pretty much everything you said-- james and co blew me away. my two favorite live songs were losing my edge and yeah. it was weird but great to see a live band play songs that were 8 min long each... also, sound for MIA sucked but for LCD it was totally engulfing

went to viceroy to see diplo afterwards, but nothing compared to lcd. it was like a oooldown lap after you've won a soccer game... but he did play a mix of 'love will tear us apart' that i hadn't heard before...and its not the nouvelle vague downtempo version...anyone know what it was?

supertwerp (supertwerp), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA didn't get a soundcheck apparently, so that's not her fault really. She did take advantage of the monitor feedback and stabbed the monitors with her mike a few times.. since her electronic backdrop kinda goes hand in hand with that sound in small doses. That said, MIA sounded alright, soundcheck or not.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

also, Lance Bangs was filming her performance. I really hope Lance was filming LCD too... that was A MAGIC MOMENT.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Diplo played the Jah Division cover? It's really nice.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Diplo was straight crack at the afterparty - totally mind blowing combos, he must have had a tri-table setup, TOOOOO bumpin.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

really? i didn't think diplo's set was anything special (i have some of his mixes that i think are phenomenal so the bar was pretty high)

he had the two turntables and i think was also playing mp3s of his powerbook/ whateva-- it was free and it was cool.

supertwerp (supertwerp), Thursday, 12 May 2005 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I'm talking abt the Vancouver afterparty though super - I could have sworn he had three tables kid was so swift.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

And the booth at Celebs has three setups, all in a curved row, control room style, so I'm thinking three tables.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Thursday, 12 May 2005 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm an ass for saying what i did

I don't think I've ever seen that phrase on ILM!

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 12 May 2005 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

that's the LCD setlist? hilarious.

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 12 May 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

James' handwriting looks just like i expected! :)

Now i'm beyond excited to see them

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 12 May 2005 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

James! Whipping Post!!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 12 May 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, played but unlisted on the set list:

"Roadblock", "Ramblin' Rose", and "Slow Dive"

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Also much love should be given to the bass player... No one in the band was dispensible by any means.. but, shit, the bass guy plays bass like Ricky Wilson played guitar in the B-52s... totally abusing & embracing its "original purpose" at the same time, in the name of fun.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott G hasn't worked at the Showbox in a year and a half; he's at the Triple Door

I missed the show due to a head cold, sadly.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, still recovering. Like stated upthread, MIA was great despite the techincal dificulties, making up for it with great outfits and great dance moves. I was in front, in the swirling teeming mass of dancers, and during 'Bucky Dun Gun' (the crowd favorite) thought, 'this is as close as i'll get to Mardi Gras in Rio, I bet.'

Had no expectations for LCD so they promptly blew me away. Full-on rhythmic juggernaut.

I LOVED Diplo at the afterparty. It was just so cool, walking in, 'Hey, there's Diplo spinning Blue Monday and MIA standing behind him watching.' He also did an obscenely tight Favela on Blast mix, condensing it down to 8 or so minutes. And he played the Cure twice. We found a couch right in front and it was like Diplo, the living room experience.

Thought it was the usual 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' but i was very drunk by that point, so who knows. And can someone ID the last track (just after)? Was it the whisper song?

Now it's off to the instore. MIA week continues...

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 12 May 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott G hasn't worked at the Showbox in a year and a half; he's at the Triple Door

Ah.. I stand corrected. Thanks, Matos. Hope you're feeling better.

My comment about appreciating the booking at the Showbox or any venue still stands, however. If it wasn't Scott, it probably was probably related to St3v3 S3v3r1n of Chop Suey, who also is very much a selfless person as far as putting on great shows in Seattle, as I think he's part of Monque, who put on last night's show.. I could be wrong, though.

In general, I don't know too many slimy characters in Seattle that survive in the venue scene here, thankfully. Sliminess was almost more common than not in the L.A. venue scene once upon a time. yeah it was the whisper song.

was right in front of diplo as well... mostly by the red couch. got there around 12:15 but didn't see MIA.

supertwerp (supertwerp), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, donut, the bookers in town are really good people on the whole. I can't think of any exceptions offhand. (and yes, I feel much better--watched Orson Welles' F for Fake, which you HAVE to see.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

supertwerp, we must have been sitting across from each other. damn. now i'm racking my brain to try to remember if that joy division was different, and if so, how. anybody that goes to the other afterparties, clue me in.

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 12 May 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know if diplo is spinning out anywhere tonite after the in-store? talked to my friends in SF and hes doing 3 shows tmmw nite: MIA/after-party/after-after party. his last set starts at 3am...

supertwerp (supertwerp), Thursday, 12 May 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost) F for Fake cures head colds? I wish I would've known that back in winter...

natedey (ndeyoung), Thursday, 12 May 2005 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay F for Fake! I must see it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 May 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I found it rather depressing. M.I.A. is just not my thing at all, but to each his own on that, I'm talking about LCD. Mr. Murphy was obviously WAY too drunk to do a show properly. I don't know if he has stage fright or if it was just too much alcohol, but man...and the musicians were so fucking great, too, but there was only so much I could focus on them without his half-assed inebriation ruining it. There was a moment when I was about to just walk out but I stuck it out cause I was looking for the DJ that had been on just prior to LCD (I was trying to figure out who did that song that kept saying "satisfaction"...sounded sorta modern post-punkish I guess - anyone here know what song that was?). And so then they did Losing My Edge so I decided to stay and dance some more. And somehow he did okay with that one - I mean it's just speaking after all - not spectacular but good enough and I enjoyed that, that was probably the best part. But soon his vocals bothered me again and I just left. And it's sad too cause I was SO pumped up for this show. Maybe it was just an off night for him.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Friday, 13 May 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Fun instore tonight. They got there late, the place was packed, they played 7 or so songs and even asked for requests (and then played 10 dollar). Diplo played a bit of the whisper song going into Sunshowers and they finished with Galang; so fun to sing along to at the end. No Hombre either night. And she said she had to catch a plane, so I imagine no Diplo tonight. Lisa said, after she saw the dinosaur tattoo on his arm: "I bet Diplo is named after Diplodocus." Cool.

jergins (jergins), Friday, 13 May 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Bimble, why must you be Buzzy McBuzzkill?

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Friday, 13 May 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Because my buzz was killed!

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Friday, 13 May 2005 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

That picture of the setlist is priceless, though.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Friday, 13 May 2005 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

James sounded like a mixture of James Chance and Mark Stewart in mid howl/chaos almost the whole time. If that's a buzzkiller (especially since I'm guessing you at least like the Pop Group), then you got no shell to protect ya buzziness!

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 13 May 2005 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, that's like complaining that, after seeing The Fall live, Mark E. Smith was bitter and didn't acknowledge the crowd much.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 13 May 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

AN OUTRAGE. I want MES to sing cuddly songs about puppies.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 May 2005 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the "Satisfaction" song you're talking about?

I mean, that's like complaining that, after seeing The Fall live, Mark E. Smith was bitter and didn't acknowledge the crowd much.

Oh let's not be so quick to compare Murphy to someone at least 3 times more brilliant than he is! :)

[Incidentally I don't care for the Pop Group either]

I'm talking specifically about performance here. The difference is M.E.S. could pull off a better performance on at LEAST the same amount of drink Murphy had ingested that evening. Murphy just sounded like he either wanted to get it overwith as fast as possible or he just couldn't be damned to even try. I saw New Order two weeks ago and at least Barney TRIED, even though he abhors touring! Gang of Four also put a hell of a lot more into *their* show than Murphy did.

That said, I still love most of the album and consider it an extraordinary acheivement.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Friday, 13 May 2005 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i was up front, and, I mean, the guy was still trying to micro-manage the entire setup even in between his verses. If you don't like his performance style live, fine, but to say he didn't care is just silly. The guy was practically obsessed with his performance on stage.. even if he seemed out of sorts due to some boozage in the process (which only enhanced it for me, personally.) If this was an off-night, I can't imagine what the other shows are like.. but I highly doubt this was an off-night.

"Ladies and gentlemen.... NANCY! uuh, oh yeah, Ladies and gentlemen.... NANCY!" hahahahaahah.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 13 May 2005 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

still thinking about the show. thought i'd mention the version of Daft Punk.. was very lame/one dimensional compared to the album version. by contrast, Tribulations exploded right after the dud of DPIPAMH.

we were just right of center stage about 4 people back and i thought the sound for MIA was great except the feedback. while i enjoyed her set, i thought the vibe/experience at Coachella made that the superior set. esp. with the Palm Tree silouettes (most amazing) as a back drop. anyone else chuckling at MIA wearing the same outfit for both shows? it's kinda heart warming though, cuz i'd only pack a small bag too. she said she bought it specifically for Coachella during her set in the desert but she must really like it. what is the title of the song she did that's not on the album?

biz, Friday, 13 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder who James will choose to introduce repeatedly to the audience at the SF and LA shows.. the bass player? or the tall guy who does mostly guitar and a little bit of everything?

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 13 May 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Bimble, you better watch out for Mark Stewart's Monobrow Maffia

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Biz, I think she played a little bit of 'Baile Funk 2' (Sweet Dreams sample) but I'm not totally sure.

Also she danced on the countertop at the instore, which was quite the moment.

jergins (jergins), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

thought i'd mention the version of Daft Punk.. was very lame/one dimensional compared to the album version.

Yeah I noticed that too. It almost seemed like a different song.

Bimble, you better watch out for Mark Stewart's Monobrow Maffia

Well, actually I've heard some M.S. & Mafia stuff I liked. I seem to remember having a record of theirs at one point, even. But with the Pop Group I just can't figure out what gets people so excited. Oh well.

I'd like to thank whoever "n s g" is because even though the YSI link upthread didn't work I do believe that is the song I was looking for! Thanks very much!

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Saturday, 14 May 2005 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

get ready SF.

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, this fucking sinus infection I've got had better clear up by tomorrow, that's all I'm saying. :-/ Still not feeling 100% and I've been battling it all week.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ned can you wear a giant trench coat and sneak me in on your shoulders?

charleston charge (chaki), Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd more than happily do so if possible. :-) (I fear my other concern is that I haven't worked out a ride yet -- my best hope is friend Yen, but she doesn't have a ticket herself and is pondering scalping options. I was thinking about simply crashing up in LA after the show but since given my health it's best I just go and come back.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

well, not to hope Ned doesn't get to see the show, but assuming he bought a ticket and is too sick to make it, maybe you can arrange to buy Ned's ticket? (that's again assuming it was a paper ticket and not an online will call ticket)

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 14 May 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's paper, yeah. Thing is, if I am too sick to go *crosses fingers and hopes not* then Yen will get the ticket; she and I were talking at Kitsch on Sunday about the show and how she was going to try and buy a spare ticket if one was being offered in the line, so it would seem only fair to pass it on to her.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 May 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

so, are all the SF people still eating their hangover breakfast?

donut debonair (donut), Sunday, 15 May 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i was pretty damn impressed, although i thought the first half of the LCD set sounded a bit rushed. the tunes would have been much funkier with a little more space. best part of the night -- covering paperclip people "throw" was astounding. are they doing that on every night of the tour?

heywood jablomi (heywood), Monday, 16 May 2005 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, lcd are covering paperclip people?!! that's fucking fantastic!!

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

did they sing the screechy vocal part too? Now that I think of it, hat song (throw) seems like it was created specifically for LCD s.s. to cover it.

tylero (tylero), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still looking for ONE Chicago ticket, if anyone has any connections.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 May 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it was fucking HOT. james murphy said 'this is a carl craig song' and they launched into it, with james playing those syncopated snare hits on timbales and SCREAMING the screechy vocal part...the bassline sounded great, although the guy who was playing it was sliding from the first note to the last, though i could hear each individual note in my head as they played. it was very unexpected and very awesome.

heywood jablomi (heywood), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ok so when do we get the live lcd album? whoever was playing that bassline must have arms of steel. i am still in complete awe as "throw" is one of those very important songs in my life. it's a pandemonium inducer. and tylero otm.

jaymc, have you tried ebay?

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i know i'm gonna sound like some whiny bitch writer for saying this, but this is the second time in two weeks that the Fillmore has just blantantly not honored the guest list of the bands' publicists (last week Gang of Four) and i got shut out of seeing the show again. i'm perfectly fine with paying for a ticket ahead of time but when i think i'm getting in, it's a bit disconcerting to be shut out. anyhow, sorry for the vent... i'm not terribly upset that i missed MIA (cuz i saw her at amoeba that day, and in-store appearance bullshit notwithstanding, i didn't think she was anything special live) but i am pissed i missed LCD. didn't realize their setlists were really as varied as ppl have been saying.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That's really REALLY shitty, Ken.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

In case the more specific thread gets eliminated:

What covers has LCD Soundsystem played on this current North American tour? I know of these:
"Throw" (Paperclip People)
"Jump Into The Fire" (Harry Nilsson)
"Slowdive" (Siouxsie and the Banshees)

peepee (peepee), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Thinking back at the show last week... I feel kinda let down by M.I.A. live. Granted, she had very much a monster of a headliner to be compared to.. so it might be unfair for me to say that. Also, there were soundcheck issues during her set as well. But it seemed her show seemed a bit.. well.. thrown together at the last minute? It was a slightly confused mess at the very worst. The most telling part was when she had to walk up to Diplo a few times during the set to ask him to play a track or confer with him about something. Call it spontaneity, or call it disorganization.. I dunno. Again, take this with a grain of salt, given all the factors.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

pee pee, the tour ain't over yet. They might be doing "Takin' Care Of Business" by the time they get to NYC for all we know.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

also, whoa jinx/xpost/mindmeld with Ken, sorta

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, the DFA website is still listing that LCDSS are playing at St. Andrew's Hall, and not the Majestic (in Deeeetroit)

peepee (peepee), Monday, 16 May 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

donut, did you have similar probs in seattle?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, never mind.. just figured out what you were saying, donut..haha. anyhow, yeah, MIA was a bit sloppy, sounded really outta tune with the record diplo was playing AND with the hype girl. i mean, granted i'd be completely self-conscious if my first song featured me spelling my name out ("K-K-E-E-N-N/K-E-N") over and over but she just seemed a bit awkward up there (and i'm not just talking about the julia louis-dreyfus styled dancing)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't mind the act itself.. It just seemed to me there wasn't enough practice involved, that's all. Again, this is another highly unfair comparison, but I saw Dizzee Rascal live a month before, and he had a very similar set up live... and Dizzee was just eons more vibrant, radiant, and slammin' than M.I.A. -- and I think M.I.A. could have gotten away with a lot more than Dizzee could have, given that the strength -- IMHO -- in Arular was M.I.A.'s rhythmic backdrops, as opposed to rhymin', so M.I.A. could have winged it a little more as far as stage performance goes. But yet STILL, it just seemed M.I.A. didn't care that much, and it showed.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

in her defense, i'll also add that she's probably fucking exhausted from all the promotion she's had to do on this tour. i think in just a weekend she played three shows in SF alone. i mean, fuck, even Alan Sparhawk is hypin' her! ;)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, same in Seattle, if you count a radio performance. I'll grant that.

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll just blame Diplo...haha. (Never have I seen a more bored looking DJ in my life, though, seriously)

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The Montreal show is this upcoming weekend. The new Zoobizarre space will host the after-party, with Rory Phillips from Trash Club in the UK DJing... Any Montrealers?

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never come so close to getting in a fight with assholes in the audience as I did at the El Rey last night. At one point I had to shove this guy away from my friend when he wouldn't stop launching himself into her space. I know indie fux who want to make themselves the focus of the show exist everywhere, but I've never hated them nearly so badly anywhere as I do in LA - everyone just thinks they're such a fucking superstar in waiting. Horrendous vibe-killing bullshit, sez I.

MIA was OK. The beats were coming across all muffled at first, but I might have just been too close to the stage (although I don't remember that being a problem at the Knitting Factory show). Her encore was URAQT and the PFT version of Bingo (!), so that was pretty great.

LCD was fucking great. There was no way they were going to top their show at the Echo, which is pretty much my favorite show I've ever been to, but once they got going last night (I personally thought On Repeat didn't work so well live, but everything after Daft Punk Is Playing At My House was pretty much golden) it just all clicked. JM was so smashed off the bottle of peppermint Schnapps he brought onstage that he kept fucking up the words to Losing My Edge (although to be fair, I'm not sure if it's possible to do that song justice live). Yeah/Throw was one of the absolute best performances of a song I've ever seen live in my entire life, although I will admit that in no way did I recognize Throw until I read this thread. The encore of Jump Into The Fire was fucking batshit awesome, but unfortunately I was too exhausted from like two and a half straight hours of dancing to adequately lose my shit. GREAT climax to a set. GREAT GREAT GREAT.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The Echo show sounded great, but I will admit to getting bored after awhile. Diplo and MIA were no-shows at the Standard party yesterday - although her backup vocalist was there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

question:

How can a DJ/MC ever have bad sound???? I mean, even with little or no soundcheck, there's little or no excuse!

peepee (peepee), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

MANY ways.

Sometimes, it's the venue soundpeoples' fault.

Sometimes, it's the DJ's fault for not recognizing the idea of volume level compromise.

Sometimes, the MC has no concept of mouth-to-mike distance, how to deal with monitor proximity, etc.

Need I go on?

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA was *FANTASTIC* at the Echo last night, much more exciting than the LCD show a couple months back. Without a doubt, she gets my vote for entertainer-of-the-year. My friend remarked that she seemed "very honest". Diplo's set was excellent too.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 19 May 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone else see the Detroit show last night? MIA sounded great, and I danced like a damn (drunken) fool, but I had a bit of a hard time getting past the karaokeness of her arrangement. I did like the Neneh Cherry lookalike she had flanking her, though. One thing is for certain: She is fucking hot.

LCD Soundsystem blew me away. I expected them to be good, but they were pure aces! No surprises, now that the cover of "Slowdive" is an integral part of their set, but there was one cover - the closing number - that I didn't recognize (anyone?). "Tribulations" was definitely the highlight of the set.

An aside: What's up with the indie kids barely nodding their pomaded coifs at this most dancingest of shows? Fucking move people!! That's what music like this was meant to do to you.

The afterparty w/ Diplo & Ghostly DJs at Oslo must have been pleasurable as well, though my memory of the evening gets a little hazy at that point.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Saturday, 21 May 2005 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

re: MIALCDetroit

MIA was way better than I expected, though she started way late (rushed to shovel down my food at the Majestic Cafe, didn't even have coffee, only to wait for what seemed an hour for her to begin). The BushBlair thang at the beginning was hilarious. She seemed more comfortable on stage than probably early on the tour. (I can see why, though, she wouldn't go over too well at an instore)I was pleasantly surprised at the energetic crowd response. (as for the karaokeness of her set, ain't that the nature of the MC/DJ setup?)

LCD were great as well, though too loud for my old ears (why do we forget our earplugs? they're still ringing loudly now). The drummer awed me! I love having the drummer set up like that, especially if they are great. The highlight for me was the encore, which, musically, was IFeelLove, but lyrically not.
One thing is for certain: Nancy's HOTTT!

(another thing's for certain: I can't wait til we pull a California, and ban smoking from gigs!)

peepee (peepee), Saturday, 21 May 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"As for the karaokeness of her set, ain't that the nature of the MC/DJ setup?" - Yes, I suppose it is. I guess I just haven't been to a lot of hip-hop shows. Didn't mean to knock it, though - I dug me some MIA.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Saturday, 21 May 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the last song for lcd in chicago was "throw" (the carl craig cover) so maybe that's what they played last in the d. it'd be a fitting ending that's for sure.

the bush/blair thing was great i agree. laughter was a nice way to start off the night.

first time i've seen an opening band brought back out for an encore in a long time.

one of my favorite parts was m.i.a. giving her hype girl a hard time about smoking too much pot. ("we're on tour i can't help it!!")

oh yeah, and the music was good, too. heh. highlights of lcd: "daft punk", "movement", "tribulations" (ace ace ace), "throw", "on repeat"...i can't remember the whole setlist because of the tequila! band sounded tight and excellent. and murphy as sheila e. is a must-see.

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 21 May 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

how could i forget "yeah"?!! omg it was insane, so much more intense than on record. oh, "beat connection" was what they opened with and that was great as well. yay!!

tricky (disco stu), Saturday, 21 May 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Montreal

Owing to my girlfriend and I having our anniversary dinner at an understaffed Indian restaurant we got there a bit late, missed MIA's set and caught most of LCD Soundsystem's. Tight, good sound, a lot of people, massive disco ball.

1. Beat Connection
2. On Repeat
3. Give It Up
4. Daft Punk
5. Tribulations
6. Movement
7. Losing My Edge
8. Slow Dive
9. Yeah
------------ (I assume on the set list this indicates wait for a couple of minutes to come back for the encore)
10. Jump Into the Fire

That's the setlist, but I recall that the first encore was a song I wasn't familiar with, possibly this Paperclip People "Throw" song or what not, and then they left, and came back for a second encore with the Nilsson cover.

After the show, Murphy said Seattle and Montreal had been the best dates on the tour, complained about his heartburn and then expressed a desire to get some poutine.

one of my favorite parts was m.i.a. giving her hype girl a hard time about smoking too much pot. ("we're on tour i can't help it!!")

I totally missed this! I couldn't hear her that well, apparently.

you'd think the poutine and the heartburn would've been in the opposite order!

I'm pretty sure the Montreal setlist is identical to the Toronto show. I was really impressed with LCD Soundsystem. Murphy et al. certainly exceeded expectations. I'm actually hoping for a live album or DVD.

I hate Acrobat - why does it always hog all system memory and resources when it tries to open in a browser??? HMMM?

Also, M.I.A. rules.
