With whom (i'm talking rockstars, people!) have you gotten high/drunk?

I figure since the cringe-worthy interview thread will soon turn into this one, we might as well start fresh...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, I'm drunk before we even get together.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the levellers. and it wasn't exactly drunk/high: more two cans of guinness and the world's worst joint.

oh, the shame.

my mate took E with menswear.

and i had a fantastic afternoon interviewing arab strap in a falkirk pub.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember meeting you just after that!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I've gotten drunk with Tod [A] from Firewater more times than I've had hot dinners. I've gotten drunk with Raven from Killing Joke a couple of times.

Some friends of mine and I hung up with the Laughing Hyaenas once after a gig at the Troubadour in L.A., and i sort've drunkenly made out with (guitarist) Larissa, who kinda almost threw up in my mouth in the process.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dimebag Darrell, circa 2001. My friend was tending bar during the day, he showed up about noon with some other guy (turned out to be a tattoo artist) and started drinking. I stopped by to visit her, and we all got caught in a vortex of Dimebag and Seagram's. Hearing him sing a cappella Black Sabbath in the men's room was a highlight.

Bad music, questionable underlying politics to the band (but maybe that was just the moron singer), but a remarkably nice/generous guy.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Also did a couple of shots with the guys from Bowling For Soup at an after-party before they signed to Jive. But I don't remember much of that, they were kind of boring.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had drinks with De4n War3h4m and Se4n Eden, coincidentally, after a show. I was really very drunk when I met D4mon Alb4rn after a Gorillaz show, but I don't think he was. I've been to dinner with Ll0yd C0le a few times but we didn't get smashed or anything.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The other night I was chatting with Damon Albarn and we were both drinking, but I wouldn't necessarily say "I got drunk with Damon Albarn."

Nigel (Nigel), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and I got high w/M4rtha Wainwright once at her cousin's house. Oh, and years ago, Ian McCullough asked me where to score drugs in Tokyo nightclub.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember meeting you just after that!

hey, yeh! i was cheerfully drunk enough to get the edinburgh train "for a laff" rather than go back to glasgow.

the levellers experience was with ki3ran st3ph3n, btw. it was deeply surreal, if only because their press officer paid for us to get a cab from edinburgh to livingston and back.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

...This guy I know has a great story about smoking crack, homosexual blowjobs and two members of HotHotHeat that was published in a university radio station paper in Victoria a couple of years ago.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

Surprised they didn't pay you to go to Taunton on horse-drawn carriage to drink zoiderr. I can imagine Ki3ran liking the Levellers. The NME vs. the Levellers was one (or two) of my favourite NMEs.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Julian Cope (on his couch, ecstasy/LSD) and Pete DeFreitas (his flat, more hallucinogens) in 1983.

Courtney Love (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Mac and Jon from Superchunk at the Merge offices right before a Seam show at the Cats Cradle circa 1995 working for The Daily Tar Heel. Got drunk or high with almost every Chapel Hill band of that era. Archers of Loaf. Half the bands i cant remember there names. I lit Bob Mould's cigarette after a Sugar show outside the Cradle.

jockey, Thursday, 2 June 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Chr1s from M3nswear.

I also got VERY high with j0el from S0uth, and then he hugged me goodbye!

From Zero To Drunk In Twenty Dollars (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

My cousin Gloria Estefan, on half a dozen family parties. She is cool in shit -- self-deprecating, vulgar, always laughing -- with no insight as to why her ballads are shite.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

er, "cool as shit."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the notion that Gloria Estefan can be vulgar.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I've gotten high as hell with Sc0tt Ian, P@ll Jenkins of Black Heart Pr0cession, and numerous times with N@te Young of W0lf Eyes. And I don't even SMOKE weed (much)!!!!

Son Of Byford, Brother of Malnourishment (roger adultery), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

partied it up with k0nrad from trail of dead and all of belle and se3astian minus stewart and any female members, this includes their 30-piece touring band. this was a few years ago... if anyone still cares about either of these bands i can elaborate... *tumbleweeds*

scout (scout), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Spot of SST fame
Lamb of God

My friend gave Dave Riley and Duane Dennison money to buy him beer after they wandered into his apartment one afternoon (my friends was in college and underage). They returned several hours later without the beer or the money, but offered to go on another run - for real this time - if he and his roommates would pay.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm totally jealous of yr lamb of god experience. was it the whole band? What are they like?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Really nice guys, actually.
Mark used to live in Chicago and I was friends with him. He moved back to Richmond and rejoined his old band, which became Lamb of God.
When they played here a few years ago, opening for Cannibal Corpse, i hung out with them in this backstage room and drank a bunch of their free House of Blues beer. I haven't been able to make it to any of their shows since they've gotten semi-huge. It's kind of weird now, seeing him in like Guitar School magazine giving people tips on how to shred.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

no one famous. just noise nerds.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ALFRED MAKES GLORIA ESTEFAN PERFECTLY DEFENSIBLE SHOCKAH!!!

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

After we smoked a thick doob, Angel0 M00re boned a mutual friend in the back seat of my old Cadillac as we were driving across the Bay Bridge to a show. My friend KJ and I could smell the funk coming from back there, and we both decided not to turn around and look. That night we all got very very high on a combination of drux. I also twisted one up with Roy Hargrove once.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

One night at the hotel bar in Barcelona the Bj0rk entourage/touring band and the members of Ir0n Maid3n (who were staying at the same hotel) wound up partying together; we had been eyeing each other from across the (tiny) bar but the Maiden dudes were brave and came up first and said hi and we would up chatting/drinking shots/telling jokes with them. It was fun. I felt major shame when the drummer from Ir0n Maid3n asked me what I did for Bj0rk and I sheepishly answered "I make the beats with my computer" and he just sneered "it's people like you who are putting people like me out of a job". I have never felt quite so lame/puny/un-rock n roll.

Drew Dan1el (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Drew, his job is not to make beats (a fine and noble pursuit I might add), it's to RAWK!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

One night at the hotel bar in Barcelona the Bj0rk entourage/touring band and the members of Ir0n Maid3n (who were staying at the same hotel) wound up partying together

Holy fucking shit.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

That was Nicko McBrain (hallowed Maiden drummer). He was probably joking.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

McBrain!

From Zero To Drunk In Twenty Dollars (nordicskilla), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Jake Burns and Bruce Foxton, in the one decent hotel in a no-hope German town after the Bizarre Festival in 91. THe headliners that night were Danzig. Go figure.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Angus Young (during an interview for Creem in the early '90s, where he wound up singing Al Jolson songs into my tape recorder)

Eugene from Gogol Bordello (who can drink any of us under the table)

um....others, I'm sure! Probably the Offspring...well, I definitely DRANK with them, but I don't remember how drunk any of us got.

xhuxk, Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had an expensive dinner with Boris Grebenshikov.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, the Gore Gore Girls too (one of whom wound up getting sick)

xp

xhuxk, Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the most famous band i've gotten drunk with would be the lucksmiths. how hardcore am i. also a small handful of only slightly famous australian musicians.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

And oh yeah, the Laughing Hyenas, Scratch Acid, Barry from the Necros, and other people I'll remember as soon as I send this.

xhuxk, Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

emily haines from metric bought me a beer when she learned how far i'd driven to see them, and later on i shared a joint with james metric.

After a series of bizarre mishaps, a friend of mine ended up getting stoned with Tony Danza.

darin (darin), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to try my fucking hardest to get drunk with Neko Case tonight.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure which story is better: getting stoned with Tony Danza or Maiden and Bjork-tourage chilling together in Barcelona.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I inadvertantly end up getting drunk w/Grant Hart about 3 times a week at the Turf.

Bradley from Sublime.
The Proclaimers.
Got drunk across the table from J.G. Thirlwell. I say this instead of "with" because neither of us spoke much. He was in a BAD mood, and his bad moods are somewhat legendary.
Slug, Dee-Jay Bird, and many of the other Rhymesayers on a semi-regular basis.

I don't know...I drink a lot, so I'm forgetting many others I'm sure.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

(DPerry tells me that we went to the same high school, John Justen. Go Raiderzzzz.)

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

also Neko and Avril Lavigne. Needless to say, not at the same time...

xpost to giboyeux: Blue, Gold, our colors, Sports our Mascot. Blarrgh. When where you trapped there?

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm seeing Neko tonight! Tell me how to get drunk w/her!!

w/r/t Whastings: left after high school ('99) and haven't lived in MN for more than a month or two since.

giboyeux (skowly), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Phyllis from Out Hud after an interview, in a Brooklyn bar, which was a lot of fun; she's very funny.

surprisingly, not Slug, though we hung out in the same places when I lived in Minneapolis. I didn't drink very much back then.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

some of the Drive-By Truckers

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I moonwalked and danced to "Billie Jean" in front of Mike Cooley and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I have danced drunk next to Karen 0 (also drunk) on a dancefloor in Hollywood. It was fun. She ended up making out with some distressingly lame dude, though.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, Slash got drunk at a table across from me once; he was doing shots with his Snakepit mates or whatever he called them then. But I drank only beer, and as I recall, stayed more or less sober. (It was some record company dinner thing, at a fairly long table, actually. But we were at the same end, more or less.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

jim have you ever got drunk/stoned with rantzen?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Not a rock star, but Jay Mohr once pulled his chair up to our table (he was eating alone) at a fish restaurant in SoHo when he heard it was my birthday. He stayed and drank and told us to come with him to some club he was heading to. We would've but we had other plans.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a bunch of those 'record company dinner thing' stories too--lucinda w, pete yorn, ryan adams, lots more. I smoked weed with the bottle rockets, dave wakeling, and I'm pretty sure the old 97s. Maybe some others, I'm kinda surprised how this all blends together in retrospect.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh....I had dinner with Geddy Lee and family after a Rush show in `92.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

...but no one got drunk.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete Yorn very oddly showed up at my Team quarterly party at some restaurant the other night. I had no idea if he was with someone or if he just wanted free booze.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok this doesn't really count but ... I bought a drink for Derrick Carter once, while he was DJing. (It was at the Phoenix Landing in Cambridge MA, tiny little place.) He drinks Cuervo and Red Bull. I woke up the next morning with a terrible hangover and no memory of where my cellphone and digital camera had got to. Great, great night.

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Kim Deal -- interview-turned-drinking-contest, ending just minutes before a Pixies concert. The lead singer was not amused.

Alan Vega -- apres interview we snorted coke and went to a party at some lame club and tried to pick up girls. He scored, I didn't.

lovebugstarski (lovebug starski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm seeing Neko tonight! Tell me how to get drunk w/her!!

Be drunk. Don't hoot at her or request to see her "ta-tas". Stand by stage. Stay afterwards and don't fawn. Repeat until success is acheived. Fun had by all.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Huzzah. Solid plan.

i've *been* drunk around him, if that counts?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Super Furry Animals - interviewed them twice for my college rag:

(1) Chicago; Lounge Ax. Backstage after a double bill w/ The Olivia Tremor Control (whose bizarre post-gig rituals are another story altogether..) - Copious amounts of weed. Those guys do not go lightly with the reefer.

(2) Roughly a year later in Detroit. They had to ditch their stash when they crossed the Canadian border, so I had a friend hook up a satchel for them. They rewarded me by inviting me on the bus post-interview to smoke and bump tunes on this gargantuan Radio Raheem-style boombox they'd purchased in NYC. I attempted to explain to them the rules of baseball.

Somewhere I have all of this captured on microcassette..

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

m4rk g4rdener a few weeks ago. Well he was drunk, I stayed pretty sober. Rufus Wa1nwr1ght was also in the same room (it was backstage at his gig), but he wasn't drinking either.

The other one was being bought drinks by M4tt from D0dgy, while people next to us were going 'Is it him? Really? Are you sure?'.

and plenty of tiny indie bands at afterfestival parties for my festival. Including J0hm P0wer who kept on getting up to sing his own Cast songs, when no one really cared. (This was only last year). Hopefully The Mag1c Numb3rs will hang around after their set this year. I've heard lots of tales of their drunken aftershow behaviour...

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 3 June 2005 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

1) GBV in London, Ontario, during their Alien Lanes tour. I had just discovered the band and had begged the local urban weekly to let me do the interview. Before GBV performed, I was invited upstairs to the band room to drink beer and watch KISS videos with the band. Then I shared a joint with Mitch Mitchell just before an argument between the band and the show's co-promoter.
2) Archers of Loaf, after a show in Buffalo, N.Y. The band invited my friends and I for some pitchers and a few games of pool at some dive bar a few blocks away from the venue.
3) Blonde Redhead, a few drinks at a Thai restaurant before the show. I was acting as host for the afternoon/evening.
4) Number One Cup. Many times. Many places.
5) Girls Against Boys. Once in Ottawa, where I was recruited to work their merch booth. Once in London, finishing the evening swigging champagne in the parking lot outside the venue while the local Geffen/Universal rep loaded us up with free CDs.
6) Jad Fair. I know I was drunk and high at this after-party but I'm not sure about Mr. Fair. It was kind of impromptu, a few people at my friend's apartment after a Half Japanese show, but Jad seemed a little disconcerted.
7) The Sadies. I was running a club and booked them to play a show. They were really nice.
I don't know if any of these people actually count as rock stars.

Lot's of indie rockers in college, Ted Le0 being the biggest and brightest, but that doesn't mean much anymore in new york. A real lowlight was getting hammered at a luna show in Georgia and being offered (out of concern/sympathy) a ride back to my motel by the singer of elf p0wer. I took it and probably made an ass of myself. I remember being really talkative.

dan. (dan.), Friday, 3 June 2005 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Kevin Ayers open for Gong at the LA Knitting Factory and right after his set he jumped down into the audience and headed straight to the bar, where I had just ordered a beer, and ordered one himself. If I had had the presence of mind I would have offered to buy him one, but I didn't, or someone else got there ahead of me. Anyway, I had a beer in very close proximity to Kevin Ayers having a beer. I think he ordered a Sam Adams, or something even less exotic.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 3 June 2005 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no stories of my own, unless you count a blunt with this guy who used to DJ with Kid Rock, but a few of my friends do...

One guy showed up backstage to interview John Lee Hooker after a show sometime in the '80s. John Lee had a flask on hand throughout the conversation, sipping from it, and hospitably would offer it to my friend, who thought it would be rude to say no. He couldn't tell what was in it, just something strong and sweetish. After the interview, he thanked John Lee, and went out to his car to drive to some party. When he got there, he says, he was feeling woozy. He opened his car door, stood up, and fell straight down. And he reckons that during the interview (not to say before or afterward) John Lee drank two or three times as much of whatever it was as he did.

Speaking of Kid Rock, another friend of mine partied with the Kid entourage after a show. He never met Kid, just saw him from across the room, but he managed to pass on a joint of some very nice weed to someone who said he'd deliver it to Kid. As my friend was getting ready to leave the place, the liaison came up to him and said, "Kid says your stuff is great." So my friend felt all weed-validated.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 3 June 2005 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Years ago, I shared a train journey with Robbie Williams when he was just starting out in Take That. I got a few cans of lager from the buffet car and we drank them together. He seemed like a nice lad.

I am aware this is probably not an accurate reflection of the level of carousing he has undertaken at later points in his career.

Once drank and smoked some of Curv3's rider, called T0n1 Hall1day (was that her name?) a Goth and made a drunken cock of myself.

Have been drunk with members of the B3aut1ful S0uth on occasion.

Will almost certainly be drunk with N1ck Fr4nz F3rd1nand next month at his wedding.

Played on a triv machine with B0bby G1ll3sp1e, but we weren't drunk at that point in the evening.

"The Sadies. I was running a club and booked them to play a show. They were really nice."

Me and my gf got chatting to a guy at Spydafest last year for no better reason than that he and she were both wearing Damned T-shirts at a Country / Blues / Roots / World Music festival - and it turned out he was The Sadies' roadie. I bought him a pint and he gave me one of The Sadies' CD's and he later introduced us to the band, who certainly seemed like nice guys....

That doesn't really count 'though, does it?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 3 June 2005 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I got high in a bathtub with Smog once. Well, all of the touring band apart from Bill who had banished us from the bedroom cos he wanted to sleep. And I'm afraid I disgraced myself terribly, cos I couldn't handle the weed or the drink. This whole episode is such a shameful nightmare that I really don't want to think about it too much. Thank god I was too wasted to remember it in any detail. I know I made a very clumsy advance on one of the band though. And I went for a wee in the closet too. Very messy all round really. Smog, to this day, I am truly sorry!

NickB (NickB), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I made a drunken nuisance of myself when I met a certain Mr Ray Byrne recently. Didn't twig who he was at the time until I got outside and read the flyer he had handed me. Then all the nonsense I'd spouted came flooding back to me. Achhh, regrets, I've had a load.

On the Darklands tour c.1987, at the Glasgow Barrowlands. Me and my mates had a few beers with them and I think they dedicated a song to my mate afterwards. I shouted "VEGETABLE FUCKING MAN!" for the entire gig and they've never socialised with me since.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 3 June 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Just remembered: The Mekons, in Chicago, mid '80s. I'd driven there from Detroit to see them, and I wound up sleeping on their floor.

situations in which i was the one doing the heavy drinking, leading to embarrassment: mick collins (dropped a large vodka-lemonade in his lap) and robyn hitchcock (dropped a lit cigarette on his foot).

Phyllis from Out Hud after an interview, in a Brooklyn bar, which was a lot of fun; she's very funny.

I can't help but disagree with this assessment.

Ian John50n the grouch (orion), Friday, 3 June 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I drank with Pat Fish & Max Eider - but who hasn't.

Does Kate StClair count as a rock star? I have never partied with her or met her, but I do owe her a beer.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Friday, 3 June 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm... can't resist even though this is the last thingi should be doing right now.

not a rock star exactly, but most notable was mich3l g0ndry. i made a pretty serious ass of myself that night but that's a long, long story. at a certain point in the night a friend of mine was dancing with him and she turned around was kinda getting freaked by two other guys. for some reason this made him desparately depressed and he went for a walk. the dj had seen us talking for a couple hours and so asked me if i could go retrieve him. he was wandering the streets, very sad, and i was starstruck, driving around the little temple in silver lake trying to find him. humiliating. and there's more to it that i don't want to tell.

i know it sounds unbelievable, but i taught priest from ant1-p0p cons0rtium to smoke out of a bong.
the rapture before they were a new york band. really extremely nice intelligent people with the best intentions (at least back then, there's a lot of haters now and i have no idea if they've changed). mike vermillion from gogogoairheart.
kit clayton and gold chains at a party in sf, though i gather if you live there that's nothing really special (and if you're not a weirdo electronic music geek). this punk band the catheters crashed at my place after a show, but they were a lot more sedate than i would have expected.
had drinks with kurt loder and talked about music in a hotel lobby bar.
there's a few others that i vaguely know (not anyone especially famous or anything) and had typed out but then felt guilty talking about them.

I don't think I've ever been high or drunk in my life. I sipped tea with Vic Godard and a Sex Pistol once, though, and I've eaten food with Howard Devoto, Mick Jones, Neil Hannon, Malcolm McLaren (duck rock star!) and many others. Eating food is underrated, I feel. It's quite good for you.

*gawd, who hasn't gotten wasted with trail o'dead? i remember lots of shrooms and acid and x with them on numerous occassions, too. though i stayed out of emo's stalls when it was white line time.
*a summer's worth of bong hits with At the Drive-In. guess which two.
*i sipped (okay, gulped) some of Charlemagne Palestine's cognac after a performance in Barcelona.
*spent about three days smoking hash with Autechre and Russell Haswell in spain too.
*a joint at anthology with Animal Collective and Black Dice (maybe blood on the wall?)

Beta (abeta), Friday, 3 June 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

*oh, and quite a few beers with Michael Mayer and Reinhard Voigt. very early in the afternoon, and i'm sure they kept on all night. we made fun of BRMC, and when "Black Sabath" played, at the middle break, Mayer went, "oh, it's schaffel."

Beta (abeta), Friday, 3 June 2005 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Not a rock star but he plays one on TV...

My wife got high a bunch of times with a ton of comedians including Dr3w Car3y & Dave Chap3113, mid 1990s in San Francisco. Nobody had heard of them then. She said they were all nice, but just as you'd expect, everybody was constantly trying to out-funny eachother, and it got a little tiresome.

We were drinking separately but about a few weeks ago Carsten Nikolai leaned over and asked what I was eating at a Tsukiji sushi restaurant at 6 in the morning after a Michael Mayer gig we had both attended.

I replied "kujiri nigiri" to which the sushi chef gladly followed up in English: "WHALE!"

Carsten's jaw dropped.

I got really drunk on Pavement's excellent beer and whisky rider when I was guesting w/a band supporting them at the Riverside, Newcastle, UK. It took me five minutes to get the key into my front door when I got home. They were very friendly.

I told Mick Collins that The Dirtbombs should release a Skrewdriver covers ep. This was only bcz I knew he wz a fan of their early stuff tho'.

A friend of mine once stepped on David Baddiel at a Fugazi show, which is off topic, but great.

six months pass...
I was supposed to interview Spacemen 3 many many years ago. It never happened since I helped them dent this huge ball of hash they carried around backstage. Or maybe it did and I forgot to write it afterwards.

Also I must have been high while interviewing an otherwise straight-edge Rollins while on tour with his eponymous Band :

blunt : Damn, you guys play loud. Aren't you afraid of becoming deaf ?
rollins : What ?
blunt the cue-misser : You guys play really loud. Don't you think you could become deaf ?
rollins : What ? Can't hear ya.
blunt : arrrr.

Adrian Belew, while Robert Fripp, who was refusing to talk to the press on that tour ("I don't get anything out of it, do I?"), sat in a corner of the bar looking regal. Belew talked my ear off for hours. I think I asked about three questions.

Most "cred": Grant Hart outside The Elbow Room, where he got me high and rambled on about my t-shirt.

Most "famous": Big & Rich, before they had their huge hit. Was part of a songwriting group with them for an internship, and was one of the few folks over 21, so I got to knock back the Crown Royale along with them.

I swigged cheap wine out of a big glass jug with Glenn Danzig at a Samhain show's afterparty in 1985. That's the best one.

Also hung out after the club closed at a table with the Dog Faced Hermans, drinking beer and talking. A true pleasure.

I have been drunk on Belle and Sebastian's tour bus, also on an NME Bratbus tour bus/aftershow with the Cardigans, Fluffy, the Bluetones and Heavy Stereo. Have also been drunk several times with 60ft Dolls, Northern Uproar, Strangelove and the Supernaturals.

I realise none of these people constitute "rockstars" as such, but you take what oppoortunities you are given.

I was supposed to interview Spacemen 3 many many years ago. It never happened since I helped them dent this huge ball of hash they carried around backstage. Or maybe it did and I forgot to write it afterwards.

My father has a similar story involving a post-show Bob Marley interview he tried to conduct at Bob's hotel room in the early '70s. Between the smoke from the biggest joints he'd ever seen and the thick Jamaican accent he didn't have much material to work from at the end of the night. He transcribed the interview rather than taped it and found the next morning that all of his notes were unintelligible scribbles.

Twice this year I have gotten somewhat sozzled with W1lly M4son.

The first occasion was prior to a gig and I felt a tad responsible for him being a bit all over the place during the performance. It did however result in a rather amusing response to the mandatory female shriek of "I want your babies" which was simply "I don't have any babies?".

The other time was after his Glastonbury debut on the John Peel stage where I took full advantage of his rider and ended up vomiting profusely whilst caked in the beautiful glasto mud.
