the levellers experience was with ki3ran st3ph3n, btw. it was deeply surreal, if only because their press officer paid for us to get a cab from edinburgh to livingston and back.

(1) Chicago; Lounge Ax. Backstage after a double bill w/ The Olivia Tremor Control (whose bizarre post-gig rituals are another story altogether..) - Copious amounts of weed. Those guys do not go lightly with the reefer.
(2) Roughly a year later in Detroit. They had to ditch their stash when they crossed the Canadian border, so I had a friend hook up a satchel for them. They rewarded me by inviting me on the bus post-interview to smoke and bump tunes on this gargantuan Radio Raheem-style boombox they'd purchased in NYC. I attempted to explain to them the rules of baseball.
Somewhere I have all of this captured on microcassette..

One guy showed up backstage to interview John Lee Hooker after a show sometime in the '80s. John Lee had a flask on hand throughout the conversation, sipping from it, and hospitably would offer it to my friend, who thought it would be rude to say no. He couldn't tell what was in it, just something strong and sweetish. After the interview, he thanked John Lee, and went out to his car to drive to some party. When he got there, he says, he was feeling woozy. He opened his car door, stood up, and fell straight down. And he reckons that during the interview (not to say before or afterward) John Lee drank two or three times as much of whatever it was as he did.
Speaking of Kid Rock, another friend of mine partied with the Kid entourage after a show. He never met Kid, just saw him from across the room, but he managed to pass on a joint of some very nice weed to someone who said he'd deliver it to Kid. As my friend was getting ready to leave the place, the liaison came up to him and said, "Kid says your stuff is great." So my friend felt all weed-validated.

― geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Friday, 3 June 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)
not a rock star exactly, but most notable was mich3l g0ndry. i made a pretty serious ass of myself that night but that's a long, long story. at a certain point in the night a friend of mine was dancing with him and she turned around was kinda getting freaked by two other guys. for some reason this made him desparately depressed and he went for a walk. the dj had seen us talking for a couple hours and so asked me if i could go retrieve him. he was wandering the streets, very sad, and i was starstruck, driving around the little temple in silver lake trying to find him. humiliating. and there's more to it that i don't want to tell.
i know it sounds unbelievable, but i taught priest from ant1-p0p cons0rtium to smoke out of a bong.the rapture before they were a new york band. really extremely nice intelligent people with the best intentions (at least back then, there's a lot of haters now and i have no idea if they've changed). mike vermillion from gogogoairheart. kit clayton and gold chains at a party in sf, though i gather if you live there that's nothing really special (and if you're not a weirdo electronic music geek). this punk band the catheters crashed at my place after a show, but they were a lot more sedate than i would have expected. had drinks with kurt loder and talked about music in a hotel lobby bar.there's a few others that i vaguely know (not anyone especially famous or anything) and had typed out but then felt guilty talking about them.

My father has a similar story involving a post-show Bob Marley interview he tried to conduct at Bob's hotel room in the early '70s. Between the smoke from the biggest joints he'd ever seen and the thick Jamaican accent he didn't have much material to work from at the end of the night. He transcribed the interview rather than taped it and found the next morning that all of his notes were unintelligible scribbles.

The other time was after his Glastonbury debut on the John Peel stage where I took full advantage of his rider and ended up vomiting profusely whilst caked in the beautiful glasto mud.
