i really thought no-one else had ever heard the spooky album - i was lent it by a friend about seven years ago, and almost didn't listen to it because i mistook it for a dj spooky album. i think he'd just bought it randomly in selectadisc without knowing anything about it... i see they had another album, though:

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's nothing like Found Sound, much more yer basic housey stuff, although Little Bullet is a highlight and worth checking out. I had one of those brief "gotta catch 'em all" moments, during which I found a couple of EPs of FS era stuff which are probably pretty good, and a new single and rumours of a new album, but I could only find dodgy Ministry of Sound type remixes of that. And then I forgot all about it again.

egg but no bacon, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Spooky were a great favourite of mine during my fairly brief, Orbital- & drug-induced mania for "progressive" dance music. There are two versions of 'Little Bullet', one of which is much later than that 1st album (which was a bit crap IIRC) and is pretty huge. Found Sound was a really interesting record that totally dropped off the radar (I think being used as background for the odd BBC2 preview was as far as it went). But their classic was the ludicrously euphoric 'Stereo' on the EP of the same name, a track so vital to me at the time that I covered it using a 4-track, guitar and analog synth. Crazy drug-fuelled kid...

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

My favorite Spooky production is the non-album track they did with Billie Ray "I can't sing on key to save my fuckin life" Martin called "Persuasion"

Old Guerilla records staple and the only thing I've ever liked her on (including the god-awful but much celebrated "Talking With Myself")

My additions to this list are:

Blueboy - Unisex
Candyflip - Madstock
World Of Twist - Quality Street
The Wolfgang Press - Queer
Even As We Speak - Feral Pop Frenzy

and good call on the Sharkboy album, though I always preferred the single version of "Crystaline" by a wide margin.

b b, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I forget the name of the album, but Howlin' Maggie (ex members of the Royal Crescent Mob, if memory serves) had a great single called "Alcohol". Likewise, Eve's Plum (featuring a pre-pop, faux-grunged out Vitamin Z on vocals) had a great, guitary single called "Blue".

No to that John Stuart Mill, though I still own it. There's too much on there that's just sketches of songs and not developed fully. Also no to Mindfunk from above. My dad's cousin was in that band, and we got a whole case of their CDs from my gramma's basement. They're the answer to why a fusion of funk and metal is a bad idea (and Fishbone is the exception that proves the rule).

Chris Kowanko - Kowanko

I probably own 20 copies of those two albums combined, all purchased for less than $1 each. Whenever I come across them in some moribund record shop's long untouched used bin I feel so guilty leaving them there ...

BTW, loved for completely different reasons. Jeannette sure knew how to do the dangerously unpredictable teenage girlfriend vibe. While Kowanko sang the depressed white collar workingman's blues with an irresistible Paul McCartney vibe.

Both on Amazon for a penny! Sorry, that's a different thread ...

I cant help but disagree with you there. It's the simple raw guitar song mixed with experimental crap and distortion that makes this short album enjoyable.. but especially the singing is above par. 'Forget Everything' might not be highly produced sounds with verse chorus verse but the 'sketches' are comparable to simple alt-folk-rock diddies that don't need bells and whistles or pop sensibilities. That John Stuart Mill album is comparable to the likes of Jim Guthrie... an appropriate amount of guitar-driven dissonance without the flowery arrangements. I see how you can call it sketches, but when you think about it, some of the best albums are sketches. Take Fripp & Summers - 'I Advance Masked' for example.

Pretty confident nobody will give these the time of day because I'm not exactly the most compelling voice around here but heck, these are some very quality very unheard discoveries over the years:

- Red Dye No. 5: a collection of material recorded in 1996 for a debut that never was (due to band breaking up right around the time they finished recording) was finally put together and released in 2015. Super fun and solid. Such a shame it didn't come out when it was supposed to. May have been a big deal? Who knows.

https://silvergirlrecords.bandcamp.com/album/fort-apache-sessions

- Milf: I've tried to make a case for this band on some threads but don't think anyone has been too interested. Yes, the name. They predate the unfortunate acronym. Incredible heartfelt dreamy melodic indie punk.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C_a3t6RefA

- Difference Engine: Not sure what I've gotten myself into feeling like I need to give each one a write up, because I don't know what to say really. It's a really immediate, rocking shoegaze album. If you like that sort of thing check it out.

https://saintmarierecords.bandcamp.com/album/breadmaker-remastered

- New Radiant Storm King: This has been mentioned on ILX here and there but holy cow this hits the spot for me. Kind of from the Polvo school of composing but less focused on the wonky guitar parts and more about the post punk. So kind of in Unwound territory too but less hardcore influence?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dme_NWiqbDM

- Fudge: The album The Ferocious Rhythm Of Precise Laziness... is so great and I've loved the song "Drive" in particular so much but everyone I've played for doesn't seem too crazy about it. Makes me question my tastes. Even more obscure is an earlier iteration of this band called Twitch Hazel which only exists on a double 7" with Technical Jed. Was blown away by those four songs as well.

Yawnsomely Literal Cover Band (morrisp), Monday, 19 April 2021 18:20 (five years ago)

The writeups caught my interest, anything compared to polvo is a must listen to me. I really like this era of indie rock but haven't heard any of these. (I know people like to throw around terms like post-hardcore and math-rock - I do myself for the sake of clarity - but I just to think of most of this stuff as indie)

your passion oozzes from the (ultros ultros-ghali), Monday, 19 April 2021 18:20 (five years ago)

Yeah this era of indie rock is a major focus of mine and I've picked up a lot of favorites from a combination of blog and dollar bin diving. I can usually guess the year of an album based on the cover art design. This scratches the surface but I tried to focus on some REALLY unheard of acts afaict and avoided slipping into listing "90s bands I like". NRSK being easily the most known among these but I've been obsessed. However, Red Dye No. 5 inspired the post because wow what an album!

No! Just looked it up. This is great! So much of my favorite songs have this exact guitar strumming pattern... no joke I was even considering starting a thread about it. So, you nailed it.

Yawnsomely Literal Cover Band (morrisp), Monday, 19 April 2021 18:36 (five years ago)

This one is a bit different and much more stuck in its time. More of an early 90s pop alt radio hopeful but I find it really addicting. It sounds like an old photograph of a flanneled guy in a 92 camaro.

Evan, Monday, 19 April 2021 20:58 (five years ago)

Having dipped into these now I like New Radiant Storm King, they went through some shit though, my god. Fudge seem quite good (though I hate the album cover lol) but Red Dye No. 5 have the most charm so far.

I probably won't get any takers but my fave lost band from the 90s also had an unfortunate name, P.E.E. High-energy, mathy and super-catchy with a songwriting style that favoured brevity over anything else. But that just made the hooks more concentrated. They did start to stretch their legs with more ballady songs and such later in their short career, and they never got anything slose to their due. I'm not sure if I really know how to embed vids so here's something that was unearthed not too long ago, it's a demo but if you don't like it you won't like anything else of theirs either.

This thread also makes me think of 'Plug' by Sloy, a French band.

I listened to this record loads while annoying my Shellac loving pals by disingenuously maintaining they were far better, this is an Albini recording and you can hear why they used him, but it's still a fun listen.

Maybe somewhere between Shellac and the Breeders first record.

The mention of Albini reminds me to re-emphasize how good 18th Dye is btw! They should have been legends...

ultros ultros-ghali I have two more for you if indeed the Polvo comparison is enough to get you interested:

Speaking of who else should be legends, well Should ...should:

Evan, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 14:09 (five years ago)

lol, 'Should' is just the most '90s indie band name. Reminds me of the Best Show gag band named Put.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 14:19 (five years ago)

Was that what Ought was called in the 90s?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 21 April 2021 14:34 (five years ago)

Haha yes the 90s-ness is really apparent in so many of these bands

Evan, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 14:46 (five years ago)

See ums's comment above about Fudge

Evan, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 14:46 (five years ago)

Went ahead and just started a milf thread btw, so stop by, help yourself to some complimentary coffee and snacks and sample some tunes.

Evan, Wednesday, 21 April 2021 16:00 (five years ago)

I still rep for Hammerbox. The main riff of this is super Nirvana-derivative, but the verses go in a much different direction, and the noisy solo kills.

Agreed that "noisy solo" is awesome!

Evan, Thursday, 22 April 2021 19:45 (five years ago)

Huh, I knew a (different) band called Difference Engine back in the '90s.

I'm guessing this is yet another Difference Engine than the one I randomly encountered taking band photos in a laundromat in Rolling Meadows, Illinois back in 2001.

I was listening to Hammerbox the other day, good band

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 22 April 2021 19:52 (five years ago)

Odd cause discogs doesn't have that many different Difference Engines, and I'm not sure what kind of better, different search engine to rely on to parse the differences in different Difference Engines.

xp

Evan, Thursday, 22 April 2021 19:55 (five years ago)

Ha, I'm not sure I can offer much more clarity, these guys walked in to the laundromat, had a guy take a few photos and walk back out. I talked to one guy briefly, who told me their band was called "Difference Engine" but didn't offer up anything further. I searched their name when I got back home later that day, but iirc didn't come up with much.

Speaking of 90s names, I do recall some buzz around Hammerbox, but couldn't keep it straight from the buzz around Clawhammer, Hammerhead, Jawbox, or Jawbreaker so never checked out any of them.

Citole Country (bendy), Thursday, 22 April 2021 20:01 (five years ago)

There's a Clockhammer too, I definitely got them mixed up with Clawhammer back then - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HJILQk7aTM

I know I've posted this elsewhere, but living in Seattle in the early 90s was funny; billions of phone-pole posters for Candlebox, Hammerbox, Crackerbash, Stickerbush... I could never keep 'em straight.

Hey Evan, did you ever come across an LA band called Carnival Art? Probably best known for having Weezer's Brian Bell on bass, their first album 'Thrumdrone' is great imho, I still listen to it often.

Love’m! Super overlooked. Especially their 45s that have all never made it into a singles comp unlike most 90s bands nor have they ever been officially offered in digital as well. Not enough demand I suppose? It’s a crime.
