DIDDY HAS INITIAL P.ROBLEM
By ORLA HEALY

P. Diddy is changing his name.

Yes, again.

As of this morning, the personality formerly known as Sean Combs, Puff Daddy, Puffy and P. Diddy wants to be called Diddy.

"One word. Five letters. Period," says the hip-hop heavyweight, who swears he isn't taking the P. out of his name to yank our chain - or as a publicity stunt.

Why diddy do it ?

"I needed to simplify things," says the 34-year-old, frankly admitting the confusion created by his last name change, in March 2003, was his initial cause for concern.

"Nobody knew what to call me," he explains. "I'd notice that people were uncomfortable when I'd meet them for the first time, and then they'd ask me what they should call me. I even started to get confused myself - and when I'd called someone on the telephone it took me a long time to explain who I was. Too long."

Apart from the frustration of constantly having to tell people what to call him, Diddy says he worried that the name P. Diddy could be bad for business.

"I went to a concert in Madison Square Garden last year and the crowd started to chant my name," he says dryly.

"Let's just say the name P. Diddy didn't quite flow. I realized immediately I had a problem."

Eliminating the pointless P., a move Diddy is making as he prepares to host the MTV Awards at the end of the month, isn't the only change on the fashion-designing music impresario's agenda.

He's also planning to punch up his act in the wardrobe department.

The man who brought "bling," into the mainstream plans to "go more rock 'n' roll," with his threads.

"It's not going to be costume-y, its more about creative styling," says Diddy about his new look, which is inspired in part by David Bowie and Mick Jagger.

Both superstars, Diddy says, had great style but "neither of them took themselves too seriously."

Asked if this is the last name change he plans to make, Diddy doesn't skip a beat before replying: "I don't know. I never say never."

?!?!

I sure hope he doesn't mean the "Dancing in the Streets" video.

He doesn't know the half of it!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Why doesn't he just make it "D" and get it over with.

ryansf (ryansf), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I don't see what was wrong with Puff Daddy or Puffy all along. Apart from that it was always very silly anyway.

Gee, you could call yourself "Sean Combs" you fucking idiot.

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

DIDDY:

I SUPPORT YOU IN WHAT MUST HAVE BEEN A VERY HARD DECISION. I THINK YOU WILL FIND THAT ILM IS FULL OF WHAT IS KNOWN IN "STREET LINGO" AS "HATERZ." PAY NO ATTENTION. YOUR TRUE FANS, LIKE MYSELF, WILL REFER TO YOU AS "DIDDY" AND "DIDDY" ONLY. I LOOK FORWARD TO THIS NEW CHAPTER IN YOUR CAREER, AND I HOPE THAT IT WILL BRING US AS MUCH FINE MUSIC AS THE EARLIER PHASES IN YOUR CREATIVE EVOLUTION.

SINCERELY,
M@TT

Apparently there were some sort of legal squabbles over the "Puffy" thanks to Puffy Ami Yumi.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

There used to be a UK "hardbag" producer/re-mixer called Diddy, who had a Top 30 hit in 1997 with "Give Me Love". (I have fond memories of the Tony De Vit remix.)

P.Diddy is gone off the internets thanks to ILM. Don't try to find me. I'veShe's changed myher name to something you'll never know. Because you never her.

I don't see what was wrong with any of it apart from the fact that HIS RECORDS FUCKING SUCK RAT ASS.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, in Glasgow, a "diddy" is another word for a tit, in both the sense of "a breast" and "an idiot".

Let's list the classic singles that Diddy has been involved in! I bet it's as good a run as anybody's in the last 10 years...

Mary J Blige/Method Man - Your All I Need to Get By
Hypnotize - Notorious BIG
Feels so Good - Mase
Mo Money, Mo Problems - BIG, Diddy, Ma$e
It's All About the Benjamins - Diddy + Family

Ned I find it amusing you only choose me to mention this too when clearly this entire board is, you know, about people discussing music and what they think of it. I've never said you have to like diddy! But I do think the reasoning here is corny. I'm not claiming anyone else's opinion is invalid!

what exactly is your problem with deej's argument here ned? that because other people have other opinion's he shouldn't express his? isn't that what ilm is all about?

Yes, but as long as it conforms to everyone else's taste. ;-)

We'd prefer it if regular posters to ILx kept to a single identity. This doesn't have to have anything to do with your real-life identity, though. Sometimes there are good reasons for posting anonymously, though - to ask for or offer advice, for instance - and we don't want to block those. If you are posting anonymously, though, PLEASE REMEMBER TO LOG OUT - otherwise your user name is automatically visible to anyone with that privilege, i.e. you won't be very anonymous at all if you're a regular. If what you're saying constitutes a personal attack on another poster, please a)think twice before posting anyway and b)use your usual ID.

djej, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I think an avalanche of yes-men saying 'diddy is shit!' over and over again is corny. And I'm going to say it. I'm sorry if that means you think I'm censoring you or some shit. Wait, no I'm not.

deej.., Tuesday, 16 August 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

This is my 'usual i.d.' i haven't posted as a registered user in months, and I haven't changed my name in ages, and when i did change it i posted who i was in threads, and most of the people who read my posts know who i am.

deej.., Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

deej, honestly, believe me, this is not an attack on you - but there is a certain aspect to this that is a bit hypocritical, and I'm questioning it.

If this were a pro-Diddy thread and I came in and said he sucked, that'd be trolling...but it's an anti-Diddy thread, which there are clearly enough people who feel this way to constitute. Coming in here and saying everyone is somehow intrinsically bad for feeling this way is trolling also.

It seems like there's another agenda at work with your post here, and I think many have referenced it above. I am not a part of that, but I am possibly exposing a link between the two.

jeed, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

wait so anyone who hates mr. diddy is only doing so because they're a yes man? cause they're a sheep? cause they're a corny british indie fuk? do they have to submit a thesis explaining their hate for you to think otherwise?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

IOW you didn't merely defend puff a la miccio defending durst. you attacked everyone for hating puff and attributed a single motive, one reflexive line of reasoning to all of them, threw in a "witty" quote and then got defensive about your attack. whatever man.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

oops, saying that you 'hate p diddy' is like the biggest rap-hater cliche in the world, and i expect more out of ILM than relying on a tired barrage of stuff that everyone has heard a million times.

jeed, i dont see how i'm trolling. I said 'this is like 2001' because i (wrongly) presumed ILM was beyond kneejerk cliche-ass hating. Then I posted what trife said back in '03 to emphasize that I knew this was an old-ass argument.

deej.., Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Did I strap a lightning rod to my back the past couple of days or something? These are hardly the most controversial things i've ever said on ILM.

deej.., Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

"new balance sneakers are uncomfortable!"
"you guys hate p diddy..what is this, 2001?"

deej.., Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Did I strap a lightning rod to my back the past couple of days or something? These are hardly the most controversial things i've ever said on ILM.

otm....like when you said the holocaust didn't happen on that ted leo thread.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

so since it's a "rap hater cliche", we mustn't hate p diddy? or should we continue to hate him, but on message boards stick up for him because it makes us look all down with the homies n shit compared to the corny british indie fuks?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

oops you're overreacting and not interpreting what i'm saying correctly at all.

I'm just saying i expect more perceptive/incisive criticism from people on ILM. "he's rubbish!" is just lazy bullshit that I've heard a million times about diddy, i don't read ILM to hear what I can get from UGHH.com

deej.., Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I mean I guess on UGHH it would be more like "He's garbage!" so ILM does have that uniquely british spin on things.

deej.., Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, "Special Delivery" was hot:

Chorus: P. Diddy]
(I want that) Special Delivery!!!
This is the remix, special delivery!!!
Come on, special delivery!!!
Badboy baby!!, special delivery!!!
We won't stop!!!, special delivery!!!
Yeah! G Dep! child of the ghetto! As we proceed!!!

deej.., Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

and i expect more thought out defense than "y'all just hatin'. this is soooo 2001". there are no doubt other threads where people take a more in-depth critical eye to puff, and i'm guessing people are likewise sick of him in general and can't be bothered to write a perceptive/incisive criticism at this point---esp when the thread is basically about a dumbass self-promotion sean combs news story and doesn't call for one.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

lazy attack, lazy defense! fighting fire with fire! GRRR.

I think what provoked me was the mean-spiritedness of it, really. No question the name change thing is goofy.

Last I heard, he was trying to stop getting arrested.

I can't really understand much Diddy hate in '05. At least he stopped his skipping dances. What's wrong: they didn't have some Sean John in your size, y'all?

Candicissima (candicissima), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Regardless if he's rubbish or not, he still has enough cachet that he can call a press conference about dropping the first initial from his pseudonym. And people will come. And people will write about it.
Still has some clout.

Today I Learned:

http://www.eonline.com/news/404516/sean-diddy-combs-toluca-lake-home-swatted-steve-carell-in-the-clear

Diddy and Steve Carell are next door neighbor in Toluca Lake. The two of them interactign as neighbors sounds like a scene from broad, Universal comedy circa 2005.

because music videos like that were proto-broad 2005 comedies with a of LA improv actors (not to knock carell)
