I relistened to "Mysteron", the first track on Portishead's debut "Dummy" yesterday. The theremin makes some really breathtaking sounds there. Any other great songs with theremin?

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pere Ubu used the theremin, didn't they?

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Portishead's song is called "Mysterons", sorry.

Good Vibrations by Marky Mark...er,the Beach Boys.

Damian, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Portishead don't use a real theremin--the thereminesque sound on their recordings is an approximitive patch on a Minimoog. The patch itself used to be on their website.

Beach Boys in didn't-use-a-real-theremin-either Shock!!!

Jeff W, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Try the lothars ,a theremin quartet, for all your theremin needs. I think they have a link on to the theremin webring. I'm not saying it's breathtaking - maybe earshaking, though.

marianna, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Lothars name is an homage to Lothar & the Hand People, a theremin rock band from the 60s. Lothar was the theremin, actually -- the hand people were the players.

Colin Meeder, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

280 bands using the theremin. There is a theremin on "Velouria" from the Pixies? I didn't know that.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think Pere Ubu ever used a theremin (until recently - now that Ravenstein is an airline pilot & who-knows where Dru Feldman is.)

The Scooby Doo theme uses a theremin at the beginning.

Dave225, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The John Spencer Blues Explosion use a real Theremin a lot - there's even a pic of one on the cover of their 'Orange' alb (warning: this alb also features Beck.)

Andrew L, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think Pere Ubu ever used a theremin
It must have been David Thomas voice then who sounds so much like a theremin.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

..Ha ha.. I think it's an EML. I have never seen Ravenstein or Feldman use a theremin and don't recall it in any liner notes. The "new guy" Robert Wheeler uses a theremin.

Dave225, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fun fact from the Ubu website:

"Robert got a "B" on his handmade theremin in electronic school because he couldn't play America the Beautiful. "It's not a musical instrument," said the teacher. It took months to learn how to tune and work it, considering he'd never seen one before. "

Dave225, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

more on jsbx's theremin (ab)use - the AMAZING 'dang!' off 'orange', where a screaming, dostorted theremin apes the sound of UFOs swarming into view; 'vacuum of loneliness'/'have you ever been lonely?' - evil angry theremin squall representing BROKEN HEART; 'flavor' (live version off 'controversial negro') theremin as dirty dirty barometerof lust.

ethan, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

According to the theremin website the foloowing bands used the instrument. Anyone an idea on which song/track? I'd like to make a tape:

- Auteurs on 2nd/3rd album
- Blur on 13
- Captain Beefheart on Safe as Milk
- Flaming Lips
- Friends of Dean Martinez
- Godspeed YBE!
- Mercury Rev on Deserter's Songs
- Nine Inch Nails
- Pere Ubu
- Stereolab
- Legendary Pink Dots

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Pixies use it in "Velouria", and Cornelius has been a giant fan of the instrument for years. It is on "The Micro-Disneycal World Tour" from "Fantasma" and "Atomic Moog 2000" from his remix record. He also used it in live shows to cover Elvis's "Love Me Tender".

Adam, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Beefheart's is on "Electricity."

Bernard Herrmann used two o' dem damned theremins, on his score to "Day the Earth Stood Still". And he used a "serpent" (whatever the hell that is; apparently, an obsolete medieval instrument) on "Journey to the Centre of the Earth".

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I made a mix tape of songs with theremin sounds. My favourites are Captain Beefheart (great snickering of a horse) and Portishead. The sound of the theremin is otherworldly as it is impossible for the human ear to hear it: 300khz. The human ear only hears the difference in pitch between the frequencies of the two radio tubes:
- Godspeed YBE!: Sleep
- Blur: Bugman
- Jon Spencer BE: Dang
- Captain Beefheart: Electricitiy
- Pixies: Velouria
- Beach Boys: I Just Wasn't Made for these Times
- Eels: Mental
- Howe Gelb: Thereminder

begining of the 2nd side
- Portishead: Mysterons
- Goldfrapp: Lovely Head
- Flaming Lips: Race for the Prize

Any more?

I think the sound on Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs is a bowed saw, not a theremin. They can sound remarkably alike.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Sunday, 6 April 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

John B may have a point. the two do dound alike, and the saw most certainly is played on the M'Rev record, as for the theremin... i don't think it's listed there.

the theremin is very much present in lots of Yann Tiersen's music, tho ...and i think my fave piece of theremin music at the moment is Saint Saens's "The Swan" as performed by Clara Rockmore (th.) and Nadia Reisenberg

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 6 April 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I play an Alesis Air Synth, and lots of peoplat our shows mistake it for a theremin. It's actually quite a bit like a theremin, but where a theremin is an electronic instrument controlled by electromagnetic waves from your body/hands, the Air Synth is controlled by infrared sensors.

There's an awesome documentary on the guy who invented the theremin; I don't remember what it's called, but apart from documenting his discovery of this instrument (as well as a great deal of footage of it in use), it also delves into his time in the employ of the KGB deciphering and deconstructing codes & messages and such. Anybody know what that's called?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 6 April 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey". Doesn't it feature his reunion with his sweetheart of 50 years earlier or something like that? And the KGB stuff; it paints him as, if not a fascinating character, at least more interesting than you'd expect. Although inventing the theremin is pretty darn interesting.

I thought I heard one in the chorus of Supertramp's "Hide In Your Shell" last time I listened. And I'm amazed there's no mention of "Whole Lotta Love"!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 21 January 2005 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, now that you mention it I'm surprised it wasn't on the theremin website.

My friends Adam and Jason had some wacky idea about Public Enemy going theremin and would enjoy saying, in a Chuck D voice - "now I bust theremin!" The mock up/mash up of this event sadly never materialized.

what do people think of clara rockmore's "art of the theremin"? does the unusual sound of the theremin add anything to the pieces rockmore is performing? do the pieces survive in a way that might be respected by fans of classic music? do the pieces survive in a way that makes these performances decidedly different from theremin performances with less of a pedigree?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 9 May 2005 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 May 2005 06:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Cornelius also used it on 'Ape Shall Never Kill Ape' and 'Homespin Rerun' on the CM record and there's a version of '69/96 Girl Meets Cassette' played entirely on theremin from a flexidisc that came with a mondo ltd. book he put out. I also think there's uncredited theremin action on 'Rock/96' (and '69/96' the song, which uses samples from the album, although it's compilation only). Bruneau up above mentions 'Atomic Moog 2000' but omits to mention how awesome panned theremin is.

I always thought that the studio recordings DID use a real theremin, but since the band was unacustomed to using it, they had something similar built to replace it for touring...

Recently, there was a story on This American Life where Jon Langford was asked to put together a diverse group of musicians from the classified ads in a Chicago arts paper, and then record a song with them. One of the participants played the theremin, and the song they did was "Rocket Man". See Act Three, in:

haitch, Thursday, 15 May 2008 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

I have two and they are both excellent. One of the two is my love's, and only this weekend she was 'playing' it on stage. We both agree that every weird woman needs a theremin.

The other theremin was hand made by an uber-geeky acquaintance of mine and can actually control another synth via cv/gate. He recently offered to give it a tune-up. It's been thrashed around Australia - I use it in much the same way as guitarist - say someone like KK Downing - more concerned with expressive diving and climbing than melody would play a whammy bar solo.

I've owned a Bob Moog-signed Etherwave theremin for 10 years now and I've only had to replace the power supply once. It has worked completely flawlessly for years, which is especially surprising considering I am a very clumsy person and most of the shows it was used on were punk rock shows. It has a lot of wear and tear but totally works.

This theremin (and another of the same model) were used in the Spooks album "Death From Beyond the Grave", a synth-garage band that features members of the Black Lips and Deerhunter. You can hear songs at http://vimeo.com/3872448 and http://vimeo.com/2127460

Only a new problem started creeping in recently. The pitch on the theremin is in a much higher range than it ever was, and it is impossible to get it tuned to a lower range. I wonder if anyone has had experience with these and would know what I should do for an easy fix. My knowledge of electronics is pretty limited but I know some basic repair.

As for wear on the pitch side of the theremin: I lost the bolt that fastens the pitch rod to the main box. Also the pitch rod itself has been bent a little bit at an angle. Also I think the whole unit is a little loose in the connections so possibly taking it apart and screwing everything back together tighter may make a difference....?
