pedrolondon (PedroLondon), Sunday, 16 July 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure if it's a sample, but the bassline does sound very familiar.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 16 July 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of think the bass sounds like it might not be a sample, but not sure.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Sunday, 16 July 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

the horns, etc must be a sample

pedrolondon (PedroLondon), Sunday, 16 July 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe, but they're just generic horn samples, not from any familiar tune.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 16 July 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure the bassline sounds like some eighties tune I should know...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 16 July 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

"Last Night a Saved My Life"! Though it isn't quite the same line, could be coincidental.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 16 July 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Ahem, "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life"...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 16 July 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

i found the bassline, Michael Jackson "I Cant Help It"!

pedrolondon (PedroLondon), Sunday, 16 July 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

No. Although I've been thinking "Deja Vu" sounds like "I Can't Help It".

I don't think this is a sample. (Though it may be.)

It's Rodney, currently unemployed! (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 16 July 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

It's not a sample--- it just *sounds* completely ripped off. It was produced by Dark Child (Rodney Jerkins)

Makkada B. Selah (Makkada B.), Sunday, 16 July 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

This song is like being locked in a dumbwaiter with a hyperactive gibbon wielding an airhorn.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 July 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

It's one of those overly sugary songs that sounds really good the first two or three times you hear it and then becomes irritating.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 17 July 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

All the songs that have sampled "I Can't Help It" = classic!

this song floors me every time I hear it.

aaron d.g. (aaron d.g.), Monday, 17 July 2006 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

I've just seen its video last week end : anyone thinks b looks a bit hysterical/freaky like she just had some speed or something ? (that said, I never thought much about her but for once I find she's cute in this).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 17 July 2006 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

I've just seen its video last week end : anyone thinks b looks a bit hysterical/freaky like she just had some speed or something ?

Change from a question to a statement and replace "anyone" with "everyone" = OTM

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 July 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

I liked their first song "Me and my Girlfriend" a lot. "Crazy in Love" was novel. But I really don't think "Deja Vu" is a good look for B.

Makkada B. (Makkada B.), Monday, 17 July 2006 10:55 (nineteen years ago)

ah. good. so it wasn't just my hungover impression !
as for the song itself, yeah, i don't find it very good. i love the intro but that's about it (i even feel like b is a bit out of tune near the end, when she screams like hell. which is pretty cool in a way !).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

Harmonically I think it's the most interesting thing she's done, especially that bridge into the chorus.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

Classic: Hearing a song called "Deja Vu" and thinking "I know I've heard that sample before, somewhere" without a speck of irony.

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

really ? I think I see what part you mention (that's where she screams the most, right ?) but I haven't noticed anything special : what's particularly interesting harmonically there ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

re:harmony Dan = otm faux show

Rev. PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie 2), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

Part of what I like is the way that bass line just walks up and down the progression but really what's awesome is the way it slams into that chord in the chorus with the added ninth in the vocal line.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 July 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

is this in the "bridge" or the "prehook" ?

[Bridge]
Baby I can't go anywhere
Without thinking that you're there
Seems like you're everywhere, it's true
Gotta be having Deja Vu
'Cause in my mind I want you here
Get on the next plane, I don't care
Is it because I'm missing you
That I'm having Deja Vu

[Pre-hook]
Boy, I try to catch myself
But I'm out of control
Your sexiness is so appealing
I can't let it go
Whoo...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

SORRY the pre-hook! The bridge is also awesome, though.

Seriously, Rodney Jerkins outdid himself on this one.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 July 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

Don't take much

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 17 July 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

hum. I gotta listen to this carefully.
also, about the video : is this me or does jay do his marlon brando in apocalypse now !?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 17 July 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

classic. brilliant song. best single shes had out in ages. i like it more than crazy in love. like dan perry said, harmonically its the best thing shes done, and its one of her best, most old-school-soul-based songs in a long time (maybe ever).

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

"I've just seen its video last week end : anyone thinks b looks a bit hysterical/freaky like she just had some speed or something ?" (don't know how to do italics, sorry)

Very OTM. There was a precedent of sorts with the execrable Baby Boy video, in which Beyonce's dance routine seemed designed to resemble an areobics video watched on fast forward. The Deja Vu video ups the ridiculous pace ante even further.
It reminds me of some shitty Geri Halliwell promo video I had the misfortune to see, in which Geri could be seen in the background sprinting through the desert with a look of perhaps chemically-altered determination, while in the foreground some record company stooge was saying words to the effect of 'no, you shouldn't worry about her diet, many celebrities who are just too busy for meals replace them with "vitamin shots", they're perfectly safe'.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, the image Beyonce puts forth in a lot of her videos has always kind of confounded and repulsed me, staring all wide-eyed at the camera all sweaty with weird arm movements, I guess to convey the same over-the-top emotion as all those terrible "your sexiness is so appealing" lyrics.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

I thought she was very sexy in "Crazy In Love" and then it all kind of went downhill from there ("Lose My Breath" excepted; all three of them look AMAZING in that video). Her choreographer should be punched.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

I love this song but the video (part with Jay-Z rapping oblivious to the fact B' is like tugging on his belt and shit, which is obviously classic, excepted) just doesn't work.

my favourite beyoncé solo single remains 'baby boy' though.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

This song is like being locked in a dumbwaiter with a hyperactive gibbon wielding an airhorn.

That sounds like the soundtrack to a lot of my friday nights.

This is a great song though, Been playing it really load whenever it's come on telly.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

jay z shouldnt be on this though. he ruins it. i look forward to the rap-less version (as with crazy in love, which shouldnt have had jay z on it either). i dont get why he keeps popping up on her songs - its not like she needs him to make it a success.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

Rodney OTM.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 July 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

again, i really don't understand why ppl would rather jay wznt on this song - and i've bitched about pointless rapper guest spots loadsa times. cos the jay/bey tension is what gives the whole thing its thing!! without it, it wd be b singing a textbook standard and we'd have to make up all the fun ourselves.

rodney's right, the oblivious jigga bit is awesome, and the key to the whole song; he's macking away and doesnt know (or care, even) that beyonce is driving herself nuts thinking about him and banging her fist on the wall of the room next door and doing crazy possession raindances and shit! in fact nah scratch that, the BEST bit is the "i'm just one to one, nothin after me / no deja vu, just me and my - oh!" and bey throws up teh diamond behind him!! priorities! how much more literal do you want!

i think the vid does work well and all - jay as the static pivot and everything else sorta like a scatterbrained fever dream, crazy aneurysm editing and senseless location switches and mental hott costume changes even in the same locations and yeah all kinds of oneirofucking. no?

rtccc (mwah), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

its cos R&B songs with rapper guest spots are passe, ditto for hip hop tracks with R&B choruses. its played.

also, just cos theyre in love, doesnt mean they have to keep making songs together. you dont see me bringing my girlfriend in to work to help me do my reports.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

I keep listening to it... and keep thinking it's not a great track. I've tried to listen carefully to that pre-hook part but I still don't really see what's so special harmonically. the main problem is there is no good hook or melody, I guess.
OTM about jay-z not caring while b is goin down on him...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 20 July 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

Jay-Z is the only part of the song I like. It's not groundbreaking or anything, but at least it's not annoying, unlike the rest of the track.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 20 July 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

I quite like this song. I like how her singing goes a bit shouty in the final bridge.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Thursday, 20 July 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

I've grown to love this song. The groove is so hot.

I like how her singing goes a bit shouty in the final bridge.

That's the only part I don't like, it just sounds like it's too high for her and she's shouting just to get it out.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 21 July 2006 01:26 (nineteen years ago)

Reagrding Jay Z, WTF is he on about re: "I make hits like a factor three"

Suntan lotion perhaps? Travelling on the USS Enterprise? Sums?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 21 July 2006 07:44 (nineteen years ago)

Erm, factory?

JoB (JoB), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:11 (nineteen years ago)

No. He clearly says "factor three" unless he has a massive lisp.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:14 (nineteen years ago)

i hear 'factory' as well? i don't hear any th sound.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:16 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe the version they play on "The Hits" is different? That's the only place I've heard it on.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 21 July 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

OTM about the shouty part. that's the part where I feel she's almost out of tune/synch. and it is annoying.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 21 July 2006 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just one to one, nothin after me / no deja vu, just me and my - oh!

That's "just me and my boo!", surely.

its not about that. its about what is boring and played out and what isnt. the whole hip hop-R&B collabo thing reached its peak in the late 90s. i dont think anyone really needs it anymore.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 21 July 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

but titchy, it's not in the least a genre-collaboration any more, it IS the genre. guest rappers aren't there to make a grand genre-nmelding statement, they;re their because that's part of the genre formalism as much as eg having a chorus.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 21 July 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

they're THERE. THERE. aaargh.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 21 July 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, the rap is what the guitar solo used to be.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 21 July 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

it's called CROSS PROMOTION, kids.

the pre-bridge is pretty harmonically simple innit? just two chords, a tritone sub for the five and then the tonic? for me, it's the way the bass and vocal lines spell it out that make it sound so freaky.

personally i would love this if the chorus didn't kind of put me off. i don't know if i really wanted Beyonce to start jamming with what sounds like Tower of Power or something. but it's not bad.

yuengling participle (rotten03), Friday, 21 July 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

It's pretty simple, yes, but remember this is Beyonce "most of my songs have two chords if you're luck" Knowles we're talking about here.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 July 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

lex, i know its the genre, so it might be pointless me arguing against it - but that doesnt mean i have to like it. it used to be for mainly marketing reasons, boardroom dream collabos, or for street cred enhancement, its rarely there for the songs sake. yes that makes me sound like an old timer, but i dont care.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 21 July 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Guest raps in R&B was what I lived for when I was 10 and WGCI was more R&B than rap focused.

Doesn't save this song though. Do love its presence on "Bossy"

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 21 July 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, when i was only a hip hop head, and listened ONLY to rap, i loved stuff like ghost and raekwon on jodeci tracks, or akinyele, pretty boy floyd etc on i wanna go down, etc etc, and those tracks are still great, but enough already. half the time, the verses have nothing to do with the song either. and as an
R&B fan, im sick of it. sorry to sound so curmudgeonly, but most of the time, its just the most unimaginative way of pairing the genres.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 21 July 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

"Bossy" is horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE! FILTH FLARN FILTH!!!!!!! Worst thing Kelis has ever done. It's excrement!

"Bossy" is an OK song, but any Kelis track where her singing even slightly resembles her nails-on-chalkboard speaking voice is hard for me to listen to. I can still remember the first time I heard that skit on the last Nas album and was like WTF, Kelis talks like Marge Simpson!?

That chart has nothing to do with the Billboard chart; the American Top 40 chart has never been reflective of the Billboard chart, not even when Casey Kasem was hosting it.

The Hit Factory--- It's a recording studio a lot of artists use in New York. He's definitely saying " I make hits like a factory" and alluding to the Hit Factory, a recording studio.

Makkada B. (Makkada B.), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

It's an odd factory. I hear an f-sound, yes. No th.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 09:15 (nineteen years ago)

"th" and "f" sound identical though, surely? Three/Free???

So are we putting this down to Jay-Z slurring his words or what?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

You'll find that a "th" will bring your tongue to your upper teeth whereas an "f" will do that with your lower lip. And I'm not even English (or American). Anyhow, maybe Jay-Z was finishing off some leftover bottles of Cristal.

wow, this really may be the stupidest argument I've ever seen on ILM.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

my favourite bit in the song, apart from the sudden barked order to jay to "get on the next plane, i don't care!" from wherever he's got to, is the kind of reverse xtina holler beyoncé does after the buckwild bit - she starts off high and ends in this weird low gurgle. she sounds insane.

i like the whole album, too, especially 'irreplaceable'.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 11 September 2006 06:14 (nineteen years ago)

I've come to the conclusion that the best moment, is not the one I described upthread, but rather about 10 secs before the end when Beyonce is leaning against the wall and suddenly throws her head and arms up in total exasperation.

And Lex, see the "Ring the Alarm" video. I don't like the song at all, but it needs to be seen.

xxpost - re: jay-z/rap guest spots on R&B records, it was great on the VMAs when slim thug went on stage with beyonce to collect the award for check on it and she looked at him like she barely knew who he was or just plain didnt want him there. it was even better when he said 'thanks to whoever asked me to get on this record'. you could just tell beyonce wouldnt have picked any other rapper to be on there.
