You know, I think iTunes would make a bit more profit if they'd sensibly price older songs like this. I caught the tail end of this walking into a gas sttation last night and decided that I NEEDED this song. But since it was 1.29 I just listened to it on YouTube a couple times and forgot about. Jesus Apple if you weren't so damn greedy, you'd have earned nearly ONE WHOLE DOLLAR from me last night, instead you get nothing. Sleep with THAT on your conscience tonight Jobs.

Anyway, this song? Fucking great and C all the way.

Digressing with a bit of a rant here, I just don't get Apple's pricing for these older songs AT ALL. I can totally understand why the latest Black Eyed Peas or Katy Perry single is 30 cents more than average price, but why all these old one-hit wonders? I mean, there are times when I have really wanted to go on a tear, downloading half-remembered pop hits from my youth, but they are inevitably priced at $1.29. Like, "oh this song was semi popular for a week in 1982 and the only song from this artist people remember, so JACK THE PRICE UP". I mean, maybe this sructure works for the casual listener in a way that I don't understand, but I feel like marking a 30 year old hit down to 89 or 79 cents would lead to a whole hell of a lot more sales. Kind of like when the record industry realized they'd sell more, I don't know, Eagles catalog titles if they were four bucks cheaper than new releases (of course this was before the culture of REISSUE REISSUE REMASTER, so I don't know). Anyway, I'm operating on little sleep and dealing with a metric shit-ton of personal issue right now so don't mind my ranting, but I have to say again how goddamned CLASSIC "Lido" is.

I love how Boz's voice rides this edge between "soulful" and "goofy Muppet" all through this album and especially on this song. On the Makin' like a beeline, headin' for the borderline... stretch in particular he sounds like that thing of doing a Martian voice by sorta closing up your throat. Rules.

This is one of those songs I remember hearing all the time as a kid but had no idea who did it; it wasn't until a couple years ago that I finally tracked it down.

My wife and I have been getting it stuck in each other's head for a week now and I finally went and read the lyrics and still have no idea who Lido is, what sort of adventures he is up to, or what exactly his shuffle is.

But I really want someone to someday win a best adapted screenplay oscar for turning the story of Lido into a gritty crime flick.

TS: "Lido Shuffle" vs. Tony Carey's "A Fine Fine Day."

Obviously "Lido Shuffle" rocks harder but for some reason I have these two songs inexorably linked in my head. It's like how I formed an idea in my head of a slightly shady adult life would be: seedy but sexy at the same time.

In the way that as kids we thought "Piano Man" described what being in a bar would feel like. The regulars would be there. The bartender would be polishing glasses. the piano would be tinkling.

I vaguely thought the protagonists of "Lido Shuffle" and "A Fine, Fine Day" were mafia or mafia-adjacent figures with dark pasts and violent futures and it just all seemed so exotic to a suburban tween.

I was about 7 or 8 years old, and my parents and brother and I would go to our town's public library for a few hours at a time, and they had listening carrells with big headphones and a cassette player, and I got to know Silk Degrees well then. Loved it. No idea why I picked it out. But this song and "Lowdown" take me back to then.
