I still haven't been able to figure out how to efficiently search using ILM's new format, and it's frustrating as hell to me to have no apparent place in the "New Answers" section where I can express how much I've been loving "I Feel Like Slappin A Nigga Today" by Ludacris, and "Let Me Buy U A Drank" and all these other outstanding new songs that nobody seems to be talking about because they're too busy conducting polls to find out everyone's favorite Rough Trade b-sides 1985-1995 and the NME's top 100 singles of 1993.

Where is that thread that discusses the US Hot 100?

Yeah anyway...

Ludacris "Slap"
Ne-Yo "Because Of You"
Yo Majesty "Club Action"
Ted Leo/Rx "The Sons Of Cain"
Modest Mouse "Dashboard"

Flying Lotus - Tea Leaf Dancers

I'm kind of amazed by this track, actually: is there some kind of sound system where the INSANE ducking compression sounds as cool as they clearly think it does, or is this the first thing in my lifetime that draws a clear line in the sand between listeners who can take it and listeners who can't? I like plenty of stuff that uses that ducking for effect (e.g., I dunno, Madlib), but this track's just patently ridiculous with it, way beyond "slightly blunted-sounding" and into ... I don't even have words for it. It's the equivalent of recording a perfectly great song and then running it through 100% wet cathedral reverb.

4 out of 5 of my list are by acts I thought I didn't like, Tim (MIA, Good Charlotte, Groove Armada, McFly) - at this rate the Katie Melua comeback record should be my 07 winner.

Jon - "Money for All" is the title track of a new EP. Have yet to hear it, too.

willem, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Oner Ozer-Red Cabaret
Estroe-Driven
Solomun and Stimming-Feuervogel
Zander VT-Then and Before (Redshape's Present Mix)
Ame-Fiori

But to name 5 is so difficult for me, I like most of the other dance picks above too and could probably name at least 40 tunes I think are of a very very high standard that I really love.

Ronan, Friday, 18 May 2007 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

Red Cabaret is my favourite tune of the year though, for definite. I love playing it out with a real passion.

Oh and late contender, Ink and Needle's "Seven" is incredible.

Ronan, Friday, 18 May 2007 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Electrelane - The Greater Times
Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape
Gwen Stefani - 4 In The Morning (Thin White Duke Mix)
The Field - Silent
Gui Boratto - Beautiful Life

but I have a lot of catching up to do.

Alba, Friday, 18 May 2007 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

Was 2006 worse than 1985? (which would make it the absolute worst ever) I think only time will tell.
-- billstevejim, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:49 (Yesterday) Link

can someone explain what was so bad about 1985 (this was the year i was born so i obviously didn't experience it, but it seems to me that a lot of great records, some of my favorites, came out this year -the fall, this nation's saving grace; replacements, let it be; husker du, zen arcade; meat puppets, II...right?)

kevin mulligan, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

Don't know if I can, but it was rubbish. In light of the 2000s, it doesn't seem anywhere near as bad as it did at the time. I actually lost interest in music, and it only came back in '86.

Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

Lots of great records come out in every year, but mid-decade years have been ... less obviously good since the 60s.

Alba, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

You started a thread about how great 1975 was, didn't you!

Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

I have become obsessed with 1975

You'll be wanting that name sorted, I expect...

Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

I was obsessed, for exactly the reasons I mention, not because it was "great" as such.

Alba, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

Y'know, fuck great.

Alba, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

Years.

Alba, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

I couldn't find your reasons... I'm disappointed you're no longer obsessed.

Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

No, I am still obsessed! My reason for being obsessed was that it was not obviously great! The history of greatness got in a mess and it made more interesting to find records to love.

Alba, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, I see. Glad you're still obsessed. Me too.

Keith, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:04 (nineteen years ago)

2006 was a great year for music, just a shitty year for music trends. I guess this must be a better year for trends, because so many of you are so happy so far!

Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 19 May 2007 02:26 (nineteen years ago)

re: "get it shawty" which has appeared on a few of these lists.
am i the only one who thinks that "you" is a vastly superior song?

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 21 May 2007 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

"You" does not a damn thing for me, but there are some who agree with you around here.

The Reverend, Monday, 21 May 2007 04:29 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, my two favorites so far are definitely "Ohio the Homeland" by Suzy Mangion and "Silently" by Blonde Redhead.

if only it built things up to a really mad climax or plateau instead of just sort of not really going anywhere for the last few minutes

Amerie: Take Control
Electrelane: To The East
Justin Timberlake: LoveStoned
Amerie: Gotta Work

butchy, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 05:24 (eighteen years ago)

this has felt like a strange yr in that it started out really strong, and has just kind of slowly diminished into whateverness. i'm not paying any less attention, but nothing in the last couple months (since "umbrella") has really moved me, with the possible exception of the Amerie single (which i don't care enough for to list).

Kleerup ft. Robyn, "With Every Heartbeat"
Rihanna, "Umbrella"
Mims, "This is Why I'm Hot"
M.I.A., "Hit That"
Lloyd, "Get it Shawty"

sw00ds, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

actually, i'd maybe replace lloyd with "u + ur hand," the impact in 2007 of which took me by surprise. i like that silversun pickups song too.

sw00ds, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 13:18 (eighteen years ago)

Try as I might, I can't get it below six:

Late December - Maria McKee
Matadjem Yinmixan - Tinariwen
Out Of Control (Song 4 Mutya) - Groove Armada ft Mutya Buena
Sideshow - Rufus Wainwright
Take Control - Amerie
The Dancing - June Tabor

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yea for including that Tinariwen
song! It's a great disc.

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 31 July 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

Ne-Yo "Because Of You"
The National "Ada"
Rob Crow "Taste"
Rhianna "Umbrella"
Yo Majesty "Club Action"

billstevejim, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

1. Rihanna - Umbrella. Jumping on the bandwagon, but it's a great little single.

2. Lil Mama - Lip Gloss. I'm sure this will wear off by the end of the year (pretty repetitive), but it's got a nice little thing going for now.

3. Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks. I have to succumb to this track.

4. Ryan Adams - Two.

5. Wilco - What Light.

Not like I've heard all that much this year.

humansuit, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

LCD Soundsystem - "All My Friends"
Gui Borrato - "Beautiful Life"
R. Kelly - "I'm a Flirt (Remix)"
Kalabrese - "Not the Same Shoes"
M.I.A. "Paper Planes"

Clay, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

Hardly one who has heard it all but I still threw this together, relatively quickly at that. All techno/house barring ghost hardware - I should probably listen to more non-dance music maybe? - and with the exception of "W", this is probably not correct at all. Beirut Boogie hasn't really held up that well since it's glorious first week.

1. Cobblestone Jazz - W
2. Pantha Du Prince - Saturn Strobe
3. Estroe - Driven
4. Sebbo - Beirut Boogie
5. Burial - Ghost Hardware

honorable mentions go to

Move D - Got Thing
Will Saul - Pause
Ame - Enoi
Chic Miniature - Kimono
Richard Reagh - P-Song (Mikael Stavostrand Remix)
Kalabrese - Not The Same Shoes

Possibly also Sweet Decay by Gabriel Ananda, but I only first heard it a week ago, Len Faki - Rainbow Delta if it wasn't as proggyish as it is, and maybe Orion by Oner Ozur, just for being a great track. And mark my words, there will be no Fueuervogel in this list.

mehlt, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

Poem Rocket - Muse Thrower
Part Chimp - Bring Back the Sound (from Cup)
My Teenage Stride - Terror Bends
Konki Duet - Daylight Song (close enough to 2007)

Can't think of a 5th at the moment.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

Couldn’t do it in 5; struggled to get down to 10. In no particular order:

I love how most people just ignored the "current" part of the original post...."Umbrella" is so played out at this point, it's not as exciting as it once was.

1. "Cross the Dancefloor" - Treasure Fingers
2. "Shine A Light" (Demo) - Madonna
3. "Arcade Robot" - Boys Noize
4. "Monkey Cage" - FdH
5. "In the city" - Chromatics

Spinspin Sugah, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

But it's "currently" my favourite, which is what I assume was meant.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 11 October 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

songs that come to mind right now:

1. T.I. - "Big Shit Poppin"
2. A Place to Bury Strangers - "To Fix the Gash in Your Head"
3. Feeding Fingers - "Fireflies Make Us Sick"
4. Chemical Brothers - "A Modern Midnight Conversation"
5. Timbaland feat. Keri Hilson - "The Way I Are"

this is probably way off though

1. Kanye - "Champion"
2. Kanye - "Stronger"
3. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons - "Beggin' (Pilooski mix)"

I can't think of two others worthy of this list.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 16 November 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

uh

i've posted to this thread a couple times before, but without looking at what i've posted before - here's the top 5 tracks that come to mind right now (and i'm drunk soooooo that might play into my choices):

Blonde Redhead / 23
Caribou / Niobe
Grinderman / No Pussy Blues
Low / Murderer
Spoon / The Underdog

stephen, Friday, 16 November 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

So. . . is there any established consensus on until when is it to early to have a finalized best of list for the year, because I'm getting really ahead of myself and kind of, uhhh, forgot theres still a month and a half left of the year left (and as it goes, December tends to be the best month of the year music-wise for me).

mehlt, Saturday, 17 November 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm... This could be fun.

Jack Penate - Torn on the Platform
Soko - I'll Kill Her

At least thats what I came up with in the last five minutes. May change with thought.

Narrowing it down to five's going to be hard, but here goes:

Joe Henry - Our Song
Stereo Total - Mehr Licht
Arthur Verocai - Abertura
Prefuse 73 - I Knew You Were Gonna Go

Seriously this was a difficult endeavor and all the albums these songs are featured on a are so remarkably good.

Tujiko Noriko - Gift
Gino Sitson - Bamisphere
Richard Galliano - Gnossienne #3
Dr. Dog - Keep a Friend
Esbjorn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.) - Goldwrap

5) WFANFC - Nancy Adam Susan

Bonus track - The Fiery Furnaces - Right By Conquest

Testify.

Just got offed, Sunday, 9 December 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

Right by Conquest is great. The chord progression in the chorus is so perfect that the only way I can describe it is 'correct': 'yes, that is the correct chord progression'.

max, Monday, 10 December 2007 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

i hadn't heard any of the songs on louis' list. the caribou one is nice. i didn't know you were into such "epic" rock, louis. the clip of that oceansize song sounds like snow patrol (not nec a bad thing).

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2007 03:38 (eighteen years ago)

Lou1s = ph34r teh prog

The Reverend, Monday, 10 December 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

i have no idea wtf that says. "fear the prog"? that cardiacs song is pretty proggy. it was okay. i turned it off when the singer came in.

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

Right By Conquest is the best "let's make out, NOW" song I've heard in a long, long, long time. There's something unutterably lusty, funky even, about those elastic keyboard noises at the start, something both playful AND triumphant about the melody (it brings both epic battle-anthem and love-ballad to mind), and that chorus marries said epic chord-progression to some actually brilliant coming-of-age sex lyrics. The right levels of pouty defiance, blooming eroticism, and fearful imagery are struck. The live-sounding rock drums, pounding like lovers, are the icing on the cake.

Jordan, I'm an absolute fiend when it comes to long-form pieces! That Oceansize song may sound superficially like Snow Patrol in that both are slow, elegiac, guitar-driven indie, but believe me, hear the whole thing and there's no comparison at all. Oceansize are after something far subtler, far grander, and far more original. Like I said in the other thread, it's practically a symphonic movement, structurally unpredictable, and ever-shifting. Also, many peoples' initial Cardiacs reaction is one of repulsion. It takes time. Go back to 'em at some point. You'll surprise yourself. That song merely happens to bone more or less everything else I've heard this year, in a fairly comprehensive fashion. They do things with melody, harmony, rhythm and structure that nobody can understand on first listen.

Just got offed, Monday, 10 December 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

Hahaha, compare and contrast this list, made in May:

65DaysOfStatic 'White Peak/Dark Peak'
The Electric Soft Parade 'Woken By A Kiss'
Eluvium 'Indoor Swimming at the Space Station'
The Wildhearts 'Bi-Polar Baby'
Battles 'Atlas' (well, duh)

Hmm. Not a single survivor! Six By Seven 'Radio Silence' was in there for a while as well, but I now think 'Diplomatique' is the best track on that album. Another late runner that failed to make the cut is Patrick Wolf, 'Overture'.

Just got offed, Monday, 10 December 2007 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

ok i wantto make a list right now~

dalek - stagnant waters
boredoms - livwe!!
battles - rainbows
fiery furnaces - wicker whatnots
kevin ayers - friends and strangers

really this whole list should be battles tracks
I am also hugely anticipating the new cardiacs album but i don't know if anything from the single really fucks me in the ear right now the way their music usually does. I need a full-length to play over and over again before i get to that stage :( hurry up guys :(
