ILM posters' quirks

I just noticed that mark s. mentions Julia Lennon all the time.

Tom's into Bollywood these days.

Arthur loves all things Redd Kross, even side projects.

fritz, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm enjoying noticing people's touchstones more than their Big Theories these days. (nothing against the Big Theories)

fritz, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I, for my part, use too many commas, in a sentence.

Momus, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just wait for my 102 entry!

What big theories, anyway?

Tom, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned *really* likes the winky face ;-)

Ron, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I say fabulous all the time. And I say fuck a lot.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Julio thinks everyone listens to critic too much instead of listening to HIM!

Alex in SF, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom - presumably Mark's lizards control the world theory would count?

Tim, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my touchstones are my theories: KEEP UP FRITZ!!

mark s, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"it is expressible in fully outlined theory form = it is already commodifiable = it is wrong" vs "it is a tic = it is a monad = it is a glint"

DO YOU SEE YET JOSH??, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm trying NOT to keep up, thanks.

fritz, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned *really* likes the winky face ;-)

QUITE SO. I'm guessing I was burned one too many times ten years back when comments were misinterpreted, see.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) Library music.
2) Overuse of the term "batshit".

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I piss people off. Without trying.

Nick Southall, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SHUT UP, NICK.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

QED.

Nick Southall, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not enough of the pabulum-gorged Destiny's Child fans know what it means to honor the fucking fire!

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have the irritating habit of imitating everyone else's posting style. Oh, and making horribly infantile jokes.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark you mentalist 500 pp metaphysical and epistemological justification for your batshit anti-theory of influence on my desk by MONDAY!

Josh, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hardly ever post, because most posting seems to go on during the day and I only ever look at night, so by the time I post at least one person seems to have expressed my view.... Is this a quirk?

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not enough of the pabulum-gorged Destiny's Child fans know what it means to honor the fucking fire! Alex that was completely classic. I tried emailing you offlist to say so but your email address bounced. Not very fire-honouring of you, I must say.

John Darnielle, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I come up with genius questions that get 3 replies while watching threads like "What music do you like to pick your ass to" run on for weeks

dave q, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Plus I'm into self-pity

dave q, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think maybe I say "fuck" too much. And I'm not hip to the new shite, so I can only point out how much I hate Celine Dion or Whinney Houston. I don't know anyone new.

Correction: "...how much I fucking hate ..."

Dave225, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Every 27th word I post will be "NIN" or "Reznor."

bnw, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I've tried querying my database to find my quirks, but I seem not to have any.

Martin Skidmore, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i hate andrew wk.

dyson, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my style is i aint got no style

chaki, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of course none of you notice this, but I constantly find myself exerting serious effort in trying to avoid making too many references to Aphex Twin for fear of looking like a complete wanker.

I even considered not posting this!

Andrew, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm really, really good at killing threads. I don't mean to be, I just am.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm really, really good at killing threads. I don't mean to be, I just am.

Hey! That's my special quirk!

That, and trying to work Frank Zappa into any thread where I can get away with it.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Arthur loves all things Redd Kross, even side projects.

Well, almost. I'm appalled that Steve McDonald is playing with the vile Tenacious D on the Tonight Show. I mean, come on, it's not like they're Flo and Eddie.

Arthur, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ew, you're right, that does sound...questionable, yes, that's the word.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ron seems to have a thing for Chan Marshall aka Cat Power.

Alex in SF, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

;-) hee

Ron, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm crabby. because i'm happy in real life.

also i'm THIS CLOSE to completing my unfied field theory of pop crit.

jess, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I ask for advice on stuff to buy and the responses are always fantastic and then I don't have enough money to buy anything. I save the threads and think "someday", though usually I get one or two of the suggestions right away.

I talk about house/breakbeat/techno singles which I am in love with and noone else (usually) has heard in the hope that someone has heard them. I secretly desire to start an ongoing thread. But a blog would be a better idea it seems.

Ronan, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I occasionally put in inside references that only Michael Daddino or the Baltimore City Paper writers will get just because I can.

Colin Meeder, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

would this be a good place to ask for an explanation of some quirks or in-jokes? like the adding-a-g thing i.e. alang, pokemong, etc. also i assume the -ah is just a ref. to a brit accent? i.e. sinistah, shockah, etc.

Ron, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan..............did you get some RAWWK yet?

michael bourke, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clearly, a ILx FAQ would explain all the running gags and inside jokes. Except the Meeder/Daddino ones. ("George Clinton? Who's George Clinton? Play some FUNK!")

Michael Daddino, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The adding a -g thing: I don't know where it comes from, Starry started doing it with man and it's spread.

The -ah thing is Mark S' doing, started with "evah" I think.

They're just informal verbal tics - the -g thing is meaningless, the "EVAH!" "Shockah" etc usually works as kind of a knowingly breathless hyperbolic voice (knowingly not implying that the hyperbole isn't meant)

Tom, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

POINTING OUT BLATANT MARK S TYPE-ISMS SHOCKAH

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i had this starry in my head all day today:

maura in CANNIBAL OX rip off shockah! it's a scandal!!

Ron, Friday, 26 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

lots of responses are one-liners despite (imagined?) breadth of original, leaving me thinking some expansions and questionings of underlying assumptions are too quibble-like

some people apparently feel responses of certain lengths are all that are deserved

George Gosset, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like saying things losin' the -gs from the ends. An' -ds an' -es (th') an' some vowels (yr). Just contracting stuff. An' I like Foanetic spehlling. Fur some reason.

I start self-indulgent threads; an' never get any replies. I read mark ess' posts an' never understand them.

And I am undeniably rockist but I'm not sure why anymore. And I use double-colon (::) for =. E.g. Mark Ess::mahd! Because I like the way it looks on the screen.

I like albums which are Coherent & Symmetrical. And like using capitals (NOT in an attempt to SHOUT LOUD - e.g. in that last sentence) but as a means of Proper Pronouning stuff.

Oh yeh, I always say I'll do stuff an' never get round to it (see::Love Forever Changes thread, my threats of blogging, and numerous article threats).

That concludes How To Post Like David H (see, see what dun did there?)

david h, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Please people this is funnier (and nastier) if we concentrate on other peope's quirks as opposed to our own.

I'd follow my example but I'm not funny or nasty enough to pull it off.

Tim, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My quirk is I'm rather insignificant in the great scheme of things, in both ILM and real life.

Judd Nelson, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuck off you twee bastards

guess, Saturday, 27 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah! What Tim Finney said. Don't you folks read anybody else's posts?

Ron, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that's a rather empty truism ron.

so who first said the words "...you are sick like dog" as in 'mel you are sick like dog' i thought it was anthony as quoted in the chat ethan posted to the AIM thread on ILE. anthony has apparently denied this. he said maybe ned? anyway the phrase has made me a happier man. thank you whoever's mouth this came out of...

Ron, Thursday, 2 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

please stop saying 'innit'

Ron, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am starting to see "=>" everywhere. Interesting bit of shorthand, that.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes logicians think so

Josh, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I never answered Ron's question from all that time back -- I was the one to indeed spread the phrase 'sick like dog' here, but I can't claim credit for it. It was, I believe, originated by the Jerky Boys -- I think it was one of their routines that never made it to the albums but still circulated around. Ah, the early nineties -- when not one but TWO British albums from 1993 (Radiohead's Pablo Honey and Slowdive's Souvlaki -- as in, "she'll suck your cock like...") were named after Jerky Boys routines.

I also claim credit for semi-popularizing "YOU HURT ME IN MY HEART," as derived from a comment an extremely wounded Billy Corgan said to Kim Thayil the night after a drunkfest on the Australian Big Day Out tour back in 1994 or so. Something about how Thayil got tired of His Not Yet Baldness's rants about therapy and his plans for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and either punched him out or had him thrown out of the bar, I can't remember. It was from a Jim Greer article in Spin about Soundgarden, I remember that much. To capture the full effect, walk up indignantly to your target, loudly say "You hurt me. YOU HURT ME IN MY HEART!" while tapping your chest forcefully, then go off and play the best show anyone has ever seen you do. (Matt Cameron's comment on witnessing this: "Man, Billy should hire Kim to go on the road with him.")

Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha logicians haha

2) Overuse of the term "batshit".
I'm more of a "bugfuck" man meself.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

batshit is one of my favorite words ever

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, "batshit" is great for saying someones pissed off (and "apeshit" implies that they're not only "batshit" but can no longer be reasoned with.); "bugfuck" is almost the best for implying craziness. (I think the best is "puts mustard on his fruit loops".)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"bugfuck" is awesome.

Ever notice that the word "guano" as a means of implying "dung" is only used with regards to bats? You never hear, like, Orang-utan guano or Ocelot guano. It's always bat guano. Or is guano a special variation of feces that only comes from the anuses of bats?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought "Guano" meant sea gull shit?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 13 September 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Gull Guano....nope, never heard that.

Alex in NYC can say extremely nasty things about musicians (or "musicians")(or, very occasionally, other posters) he doesn't like and everybody loves him for it, like he's Don Rickles or Richard Belzer or somebody! (Gotta be a Noo Yawk thing.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i only like to talk about pavement, superchunk and indie rock bands. i always ask dumb questions that have been asked elsewhere on ILM. i like to talk about philadelphia.

and yet, you love me.

Nowell, Monday, 13 September 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned: that was quite possibly one of my favourite WTF?!?! inducing quotes from His Future Baldness...that is, prior to the complete ocelotquano-insane posts he started blogging on his own personal site.

only, well, those are so insane it's hard to pick a single line to quote. XD
