The Radio 1 Playlist, Issue Date: 13th August 2008

Being as how the UK top 40 moves slower than molasses at the moment, discussing it is rapidly becoming less fun than it once was, so I think I'mma start doing polls of radio playlists - just one a week, so we don't be all flooding the board and such.

Below is the Radio 1 playlist for the next week as issued last night. Simply vote for the song on there that you think is the best. Poll closes next Wednesday, and I'll run another one when it does. All the songs on here should be findable via Youtube and Myspace and the usual routes, possibly excepting Oasis though that may well be everywhere already, I just don't know anymore...

Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

I might have to avoid these polls coz that list makes me wanna hang myself.

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:01 (seventeen years ago)

For some reason we actually have a ready-made noose at my work as well.

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:02 (seventeen years ago)

It actually is Vampire Weekend. Jesus Christ.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:04 (seventeen years ago)

i think freemasons rmx will win

noticing a lot of stuff on here that i wanted to be good but really just isnt, namely "jump in the pool", "mercury", the ida maria single, the other alphabeat song

kings of leon track is a mess and i liked the singles from their last albums

as far as r&b/hip hop goes you could do worse than "lovin u long time" and that flo-rida single (best thing will.i.am has done in forever), though its a shame to see that even a well-meaning country like england has been hoodwinked by flobots. at least its not shwayze

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:04 (seventeen years ago)

btw what in gods name is this

Keane - Spiralling

tell me its about the dude turning into a cokehead

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

There's a fair proportion of this list I've yet to hear, but the one I'm dreading most, by a distance:

Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire

I mean... urrgh.

I listened to some of the list last night - the Slipknot ain't too bad (remarkably heavy for a daytime Radio 1 record) and "Paddy's Revenge" is a decent amount of fun. "Boyfriend" is comfortably the best of Alphabeat's UK singles thus far, possibly cos I've not listened to it enough to discern that they sound like they've had nails driven through their feet.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

That Ida Maria single may be my most hated record this year. It literally makes me feel ill.

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

Is the Keane one an Antony and the Johnsons cover? Please tell me no.

Matt DC, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:10 (seventeen years ago)

its a shame to see that even a well-meaning country like england has been hoodwinked by flobots.

Lots of countries have a Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:10 (seventeen years ago)

what the hell is the "rock mafia" remix of miley c

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:11 (seventeen years ago)

From the Youtube, it appears to be Radio 1 hitting the hard house bandwagon slightly too late.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

anyway that's just...a horrible list in every way, am probably going to go for 'i'll be lovin' u long time' which isn't even one of the seven best songs on its parent album

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

Just wait until they discover minimal, then there'll be no stopping them.

Considering how little "rock" Radio 1 plays, they've never been afraid to go hard on the playlist. Weren't Trivium B-listed a year or so ago?

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:13 (seventeen years ago)

damn, i really thought if anyone was gonna throw a vote biffy clyro's way that it was going to be you lex

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

songs i would willingly hear again:

Miley Cyrus - See You Again [Rock Mafia remix]
Little Jackie - The World Should Revolve Around Me
Rihanna - Disturbia
Spoon, Harris & Obernik - Baditude
Mariah Carey - I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time
Nas featuring Keri Hilson - Hero
Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up
Flo Rida featuring will.I.am - In The Ayer

og 'see you again' apart, not one of these is anything like an artistic peak for any of these people

og 'i decided' is great but cannot condone clunky freemasons crap

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:16 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think Trivium got above C-List - that said, "Duality" went top 20 and I could see that having got on the B-List.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

Oasis - The Shock Of The Lightning

Let's see how long I can go without hearing this.

Matt DC, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

disturbia is really good, should have the chris brown house single on here instead, though

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

Does that guy who shouts a lot still host The Lock Up on Radio 1? He's probably the station's best DJ, which says a lot.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

they probably had the c brown on a while ago, it was a decent-sized hit. 'disturbia' has really good lyrics but the autotune gimmick sounds a bit lame on riri, her voice is flat anyway and doesn't need to be made flatter

xp

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:20 (seventeen years ago)

Mike Davies? Tuesdays, 2-4am.

Might do his playlist as the next poll, actually.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

actually 'in the ayer' is really awesome, thinking about it, and i hope more people jump on the freestyle revival bandwagon.

i loved 'when i grow up' when i first heard it but the arrival of the tila tequila single rendered it redundant

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

Went for "In The Ayer." Would have gone for "I Decided" had it been the original album mix (Solange album out next Monday, definitely looking forward to that).

No "Out Here Grindin'," no "Walk In Da Park," no "Mr Carter," no Jazmine or J-Hud or Cassie or Lalah Holloway - no fit for purpose.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

Is it just that the sound quality of the Youtube version of the "I Decided" remix is that poor, or is it actually meant to sound like that? I'm probably one of the bigger Freemasons enthusiasts in these parts, but it's so bloody tinny and her vocals are lost. Bloody 'orrible.

No Out Here Grindin'

Do you reckon Khaled and Westwood have met?

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:31 (seventeen years ago)

no funky house, no 'stryderman', no young jeezy...'f ur x' never got R1 airplay did it? bah to them racists

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

re: freemasons, it amazes me how they can bang out stuff as amazing and epic as the 'ring the alarm' or 'work' remixes, but their own stuff is so rote and boring, and then remixes like this just go clunk and fall totally flat

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

Do you reckon Khaled and Westwood have met?

We Global is the third album by Miami based producer DJ Khaled.[3][4][5

J0rdan S., Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

Would pay for a radio show of just Westwood and Khaled shouting non-sequitirs for two hours.

So, anyone heard:

Sam Beeton - What You Look For
Black Tide - Shout

then?

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:42 (seventeen years ago)

I assume any popstar called Sam is a dull as ditchwater reality TV winner who everyone's nan likes.

Matt DC, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

Waht about Sam Fox?

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)

The Keane song is their 80s number.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:55 (seventeen years ago)

But yeah, Vampire Weekend. Fuck.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:56 (seventeen years ago)

Have you guys heard The Script yet? You're gonna LOVE them.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:56 (seventeen years ago)

Erm, yes.

Sam Beeton - generic corporate pseudo-indie
Black Tide - mock rock

"PUT ON" BLASTING OUT OF EVERY CAR, BUS, SHOP, STREET MARKET, BEDSIT WINDOW AND MANSION HOUSE IS A MUST

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

Rolling UK Chart thread was on The Script and their uniquely Irish insights into pain and suffering yonks ago.

Note on the Prydz - no vocals, so that would make it moderately interesting if it were a big-ish hit, except that it's rubbish. Also, "Heater".

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

This said - I just had a look for the Radio Aire playlist to see about doing a poll made out of that, and it featured eight songs. Two of them were by Scouting For Girls.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 10:01 (seventeen years ago)

That Little Jackie record should have been shot at birth.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 14 August 2008 10:08 (seventeen years ago)

I quite liked it the one time I heard it, but found I couldn't actually listen to it in one whole sitting. That might just be my attention span, though. It was definitely better than the Sonny J record, though I'm intrigued to see how the "Mirwais Remix" will make that sound like anything other than a piss-weak The Go! Team rip-off.

Tentative schedule for the next few polls:

Next week: Mike Davies
Week after: 1Xtra Playlist (currently features Jazmine Sullivan and Jennifer Hudson and "A Milli", but seems to move quite slowly so a couple weeks delay should mean these are all still on there)
Week after that: Bob Harris/Bob Harris Country

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 10:25 (seventeen years ago)

(obv. I say this before I discover that this poll has attracted a total of three votes, all of which are for Biffy Clyro)

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

all of whom are in Biffy Clyro morelike

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 14 August 2008 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

if anyone on ILM has heard even half of these i'd be surprised. on that basis alone these polls probably aren't worth doing.

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

Youtubes will follow, but probably not til I'm home from work. In future I imagine I'll do the polls in the evening, get links sorted before then.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 11:27 (seventeen years ago)

sorry i was being a bit harsh - i've heard more than i thought i had altho most not in their entirety

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

ok so enuff moaning about how awful that playlist is - does anyone have any thoughts as to why it's in the state it's in? and whether this situation will change any time soon?

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think the playlist is that bad - at least no worse than it's ever been. the main problem with it is the lack of support for UK urban pop because they see 1Xtra catering for that almost on its own - and there's US urban stuff here because they expect it to sell more generally so they can get with it.

think i like the Keane song the most out of the ones i've heard :/ not heard the Flo Rida yet ('Elevator' put me off - piss off Timba)

Chemical Brothers one still seems just horrendous and embarrassing to me at this point

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 11:36 (seventeen years ago)

Here's some Myspaces for now:

Kings of Leon
Friendly Fires
Gym Class Heroes
Bryn Christopher
J Majik

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

does anyone have any thoughts as to why it's in the state it's in?

Radio 1 appears to have lost faith in the idea of casual listeners tuning in to specialist shows - it is generally thought that people at further ends of the listening spectrum will already know what they like and where to get it, hence daytime on Radio 1 now basically runs til midnight Monday-Thursday. Specialist genre shows that, post-Peel, would get scheduled at 9pm are now punted out to midnight or later on the assumption that people will use Listen Again rather than listen live. This extends to the usage of 1Xtra as the place where people who like black music will listen to black music, out of the way of the casual listener. Everyone knows their place. Awkward stuff gets neatly hived away, or has to prove itself in the lower leagues before it gets put on the list - I'm pretty certain "American Boy", for example, was playlisted on Radio 2 before Radio 1 (also that "Wait A Minute" was the actual lead single from Shine, and that did bugger all at the back end of 2007).

My thoughts on this all feel a bit mangled and conjecture-y to be honest. Going off what I've written above, how does stuff actually get on the playlist? My theory doesn't hold true for a fair few things there. There are clearly some acts that Radio 1 are bent on pushing ahead of others, given that they've been given second chances to make it onto the daytime playlist despite their previous efforts not really hitting it off with the audience (Does It Offend You, Yeah? and Bryn Christopher seem the most obvious examples) but to pretend that I know why would be a bit... presumptuous.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 11:57 (seventeen years ago)

'Wait A Minute' is really great but didn't know it had been released

I just can't believe it's that simple though. If only cos it feels like that's the answer that the cast of The Now Show would come up with.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

Essentially it comes down to racism - 1Xtra was apartheid through the back door.

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:23 (seventeen years ago)

an apartheid that only seems to affect british black artists, not american ones

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

So where are all the American records and artists I listed above then? And why the fuck are they not dominating the charts? Are the charts really dependent on fucking 55-year-old bikers called Nigel who never got over John Bonham?

Dingbod Kesterson, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:27 (seventeen years ago)

I think they should be devoting a third of the playlist to US music, realistically. They're pretty much doing that, and most of that is rap/RnB albeit 'proven' names only for the most part.

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

The peculiar thing about 1Xtra is that its schedule has actually got closer to Radio 1's in format, with the strip-scheduling of MistaJam's show from 7-10 on weekday evenings mirroring the scheduling of Zane Lowe on Radio 1. It also seems weird that, given the amount of specialist indie DJs Radio 1 employs, Radio 1 has only got one specialist hip-hop DJ in Westwood, and he's now been drafted over to be one of three specialist hip-hop DJs on 1Xtra too.

Incidentally, MistaJam's show is coming to Radio 1 in October. At 3am on Sunday morning, leading into Ras Kwame at 5am. Also: Tim Westwood's Saturday show will be extended by one hour from 9pm -1am and include reggae dancehall DJ Goldfinger. What are we to make of that? The current schedule has Westwood at 9, Goldfinger at midnight, Fabio at 2 and The 1Xtra Takeover at 4. MistaJam is replacing the Takeover, and his getting an extra hour means Goldfinger's got the squeeze and is being incorporated into Westwood's programme in an as-yet undefined manner. (Marcello might also be pleased to discover that Kutski's been given two hours to play hard dance and hardcore at 1am on Friday nights)

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:36 (seventeen years ago)

they would've shifted Westwood long ago if only he wasn't so enduringly popular/

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:39 (seventeen years ago)

MistaJam was fantastic as the "overweight champion of overnight" doing big four hour mixes. He played "Hit 'em High" from Space Jam once. Not feeling him as a general host though.

BBC Radio 1 DJ Dave Pearce is to leave the station, it has been announced.

Pearce, who has been with Radio 1 since 1995, said it was "time to move on" and was working on some new radio projects.

"It's been an incredible 13 years at Radio 1 - I would like to thank the teams who have worked with me for making it such fun," he said.

Pearce will be leaving the station along with Eddie Halliwell in October as part of a series of changes to the station's evening schedule.

"Of all the shows I've presented Dance Anthems is the one I'm most proud of creating and I am delighted that even in our recent late night slot we increased our audience," Pearce added.

Ben Cooper, Radio 1's head of programmes said: "I'd like to thank both Dave and Eddie for their commitment to Radio 1 and wish them all the very best for the future."

The changes come as part of Radio 1's new evening line-up, which sees new shows for dance DJs Kissy Sell Out and Kutski, amongst others.

Kissy Sell Out will present a "jump up rock n rave" show on Thursdays

Kissy Sell Out and Kutski are to front two new dance shows on Radio 1.

1Xtra's Mistajam will also join the station as part of a shake-up of the evening programming schedule.

Club DJ Kissy will host a Thursday night show from midnight until 2am, with Kutski playing Friday nights from 1am until 3am.

Dance Anthems presenter Dave Pearce and Eddie Halliwell will leave the station in October. Pearce has been with Radio 1 since 1995.

He said: "It's been an incredible 13 years at Radio 1, of all the shows I've presented Dance Anthems is the one I'm most proud of creating."

Further changes

The In New Music We Trust line-up gets three new presenters, techno DJ Heidi Van den Amstel and Jaymo & Andy George who will play "electro mash up".

Jaymo & Andy George were spotted by Radio 1 when they took part in the Essential Mix Introducing tour

They join a rotating line up on Thursdays from 2am until 4am.

Tim Westwood's Saturday show will be extended by one hour, from 9pm until 1am and include reggae dancehall DJ Goldfinger.

And Judge Jules will move to the 11pm-1am slot on Friday night.

Mistajam will continue to present his weekday show on 1Xtra

Speaking about his new show, Kissy Sell Out said: "It still seems crazy to me that a misfit musician like me who you would be more likely to catch moshing on the front row of an indie gig would get such a massive opportunity.

"But I promise to keep doing the best job I can and always going that extra yard to make each show better than the last one."

The new schedule comes into effect in October.

Kissy Sell Out, real name Tommy Bisdee, is a DJ/producer and graphic designer from the UK. Kissy Sell Out quickly gained notoriety in 2006/07 in the UK for his eccentric electro productions and energetic DJ style.[1]

Inspired by early recordings of underground drum'n'bass events in the UK, Kissy frequently uses an air horn during his DJ sets and in June 2007 was pictured on the front cover of DJ Magazine blasting one into the air.[2]

In July 2007 Kissy Sell Out was signed by BBC Radio 1 to present a monthly installment of a specialist dance music show called In New DJs We Trust.[3]

During his final year studying Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins College Of Art And Design in London, Kissy worked full-time as a design assistant at a high-fashion magazine called POP Magazine.

Since he started working professionally as a producer in late 2006, Kissy Sell Out has worked on official remixes for many notable artists including The Human League, R.E.M, Mark Ronson, Sugababes, Gwen Stefani, Groove Armada, The Loose Cannons, Calvin Harris, Acoustic Ladyland, Remi Nicole, Arthur Baker, Dragonette, GoodBooks, Operator Please, The Black Ghosts, Franz And Shape, Bolt Action Five, Chungking, The Dykeenies, and All Saints.

will's theory rings true, anyway - i think what leaps out about the R1 playlist is how timid and conservative it is, as if it's scared that its audience will dry up (and go...to the internet? o_0) if it doesn't give people what it thinks they like. despite R1 being constantly acknowledged as a make-or-break part of an artist's campaign! i really don't know anything about the inner workings of radio though so no idea why this is or how it could change.

i would also agree w/marcello's "apartheid through the back door" phrasing, just because you justify your racism by projecting it on to your audience ("oh we don't feel they're ready for this) doesn't make it any less racist. also, sure there are a couple of black american artists on the playlists and in the charts, but this doesn't even scratch the surface of what could be there...

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:54 (seventeen years ago)

is it really just being racist though when there's many genres of music R1 doesn't cater for or playlist?

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 14 August 2008 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

i don't think this is a good guideline at all

for a British radio station i think it's an excellent guideline. the general quality of UK music is irrelevant in this argument.

i think what leaps out about the R1 playlist is how timid and conservative it is

you're ignoring history as usual. not saying it should be this timid/conservative, just that this is hardly a surprise or unusual.

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:06 (seventeen years ago)

no Japanese music in the playlist at all. SO RACIST.

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand this argument, like the daytime Radio One playlist hasn't been boring and conservative for decades. Have you seen what's on BBC TV during the day? Why does anyone expect it to be relevant or radical?

Matt DC, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:13 (seventeen years ago)

The oddest thing about the playlist is how little of this stuff is actually in the charts right now as most of it hasn't been released yet. Re-assuring really although maybe it's further evidence of the increased focus on trying to shape and build things up with little regard for what happens after. Pop's disposability reflected literally. I'm sure they still bash out 'Sweet About Me' at least 4 times a day but wouldn't know.

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:20 (seventeen years ago)

Because it affects the general perception of what's popular. Look at the charts in the sixties and it's the same story - anything in there that's decent got there because of the pirate stations. When these were shut down and BBC had the state radio monopoly you suddenly look at the lists and think, where the hell are all those classics, not just Motown, Stax, JB etc. but psychedelia as well, and you find that they're either not in there at all or they peaked at #36 or something all because of fucking MoR showbiz ballads which the BBC played to death under pain of death at the time and which nobody ever plays now.

It's the same story now. Look back on 2008 in a few years' time and people will remember "A Milli" and "Put On" and "Where The Cash At," not fucking Gabriela Climi and shitty BRIT School state-approved "pop."

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

I don't understand this argument, like the daytime Radio One playlist hasn't been boring and conservative for decades. Have you seen what's on BBC TV during the day? Why does anyone expect it to be relevant or radical?

Cos Radio 1 markets itself as The Home Of New Music, maybe? And this New Music for Young People all sounds a bit similar and just a smidge homogenised? It's a fair point that daytime radio is generally seen as background music, but Radio 1 markets itself as something a bit different - it is the place where artists break into the mainstream. It is the nation's pop station. It is the mover and the shaker, the attitude-shaper, and sometimes I can express that without moving into the meter of Edwyn Collins' "The Magic Piper". Unlike 1Xtra and 6Music, it has an FM frequency, making it massively more accessible than them two.

It's certainly a tricky balance to strike. At the moment, looking at the top 40, the record most clearly affirming Radio 1's reputation as stated above is "Five Years Time" - artists that have been brought up through the specialist shows, then come up through the playlist and now find themselves embedded in the top ten. The same is true of both Ting Tings singles. Neither of these records would have necessarily found a home on commercial radio, not even on XFM.

---

Lil Wayne had a US number one, hence he got a push in the UK. Same for Flo Rida, same for Chamillionaire, same for Soulja Boy. Nelly's new material hasn't done much in the US, but given that he's had number ones in the UK in the past he got play because he's a recognised name. Proven track records, innit.

"A Milli" is on the 1Xtra playlist. It is not certain that it'll get on the R1 playlist unless it tops - as in, goes to number 1 and no lower on - the Billboard Hot 100. Which it might very well do.

(sorry, I've been typing this post in about five different instalments, so I've no idea if it makes sense anymore)

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

Lex just out of interest when was the last time you listened to Radio One as opposed to just looking at the playlist? Did you look at the playlist at all in 2000?

i've maybe listened to half an hour's worth of radio since my second year of university! a winner is me

Because it affects the general perception of what's popular

yeah this is true though it's always quite a nebulous feeling sin't it? but that historical context was nice. similarly i've always been shocked when i've had to research the chart positions of various 90s standards. 'gin & juice' got to no 39, as did 'not gon cry', 'can i get a...' got to no 22, even 'unfinished sympathy' missed the top 20.

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

Perhaps also worth noting that Gaby Cilmi, who at least a couple of people have cited as a Radio 1 artist upthread, was definitely on the Radio 2 playlist first, way, way back in January, with the song initially bombing at 31 'n' out in the chart til it was rescued by the roll-on commercial. Being featured in that got her on the Radio 1 playlist. Which got her back in the chart and into the top ten. So it's a bit of column A, bit of column B.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

it's just the same as the NME argument - this [insert big brand channel/publication/website] should be reflecting a wider variety of the nation's tastes and acting gatekeeper/filter better than it does

obv difference is that Radio 1 is 24/7 always on (like the internet) and even better placed to operate this mandate effectively. they don't even have to worry about revenue particularly (but they act like they do).

blueski, Thursday, 14 August 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

lex pretend, Thursday, 14 August 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

Surely Radio 1's current state is just a side-effect of that fact that, at this moment in time, more people are a) listening to music and b) declaring themselves as having an active interest in music than at any point in history (due to changes in perception of music consumption, media coverage, iPods, etc etc etc). Therefore, Radio 1 has to be as bland as possible in order to not offend anyone because they have the widest possible listening base of any time in their history (and why "shouty black guy music" and "weird guitar noise music by guys in glasses" have both been partitioned to different channels).

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 14 August 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

WANT-AWAY MACPHERSON IN "COME AND GET ME" PLEA TO SCHREIBER

If this playlist accurately reflected the taste or makeup of the nation then it would be even more conservative.

This has been a problem for Radio 1 this year in the form of "Rockstar" - that caught them completely off guard, and once it became clear it wasn't going anywhere, it found its way onto the A-list. The balance between reflecting and agenda-setting is really very difficult to strike. That said, "All Summer Long" is very much conspicuous by its absence from the playlist despite it having been number 1 this time last week - I can't remember the last time a number one single wasn't on the Radio 1 playlist.

I'm really looking forward to the Mike Davies list next week, actually, cos the crossover between this playlist and his is more-or-less non-existent. Oddly, I think the record here that's closest to what he plays might be The Automatic - clearly a band that are more than a bit au fait with hardcore punk, but filtered through a UK indie sheen, and now they've lost the screaming keyboard dude they're moving a bit stadium rock-ish (their response to his leaving - "maybe we're not cool enough for him anymore". Which is an interesting take). Here is the video.

Pashmina, Thursday, 14 August 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

There've certainly been number ones that weren't on the R1 playlist before they topped the charts, but they tend to get added immediately after they top the chart, or more usually on the Thursday before.

Actually, hang on, it's Melua and Cassidy (that happened, you know? Really it did).

Anyway:

this includes Scooter and Darren Styles

This also brings up something we've not mentioned, namely Radio 1's reputation as a dance music station. I remember listening to... oh bother, I've forgotten it now, but it was on Thursday nights around midnight back in 2002-ish, not The Essential Mix but something with a similar name. They had a two-hour show presented by Hixxy and possibly Styles and Breeze where they played happy hardcore, complained about Radio 1 not playing hard dance, and delighted in farting on Chris Moyles' chair. I remember there being another episode split between Flip & Fill and Scooter.

In any case, Scooter's album caught R1 massively on the hop, and the real re-emergence of hard dance as a commercial force this year has necessitated the introduction of Kutski's show (note also that Styles' single with Ultrabeat got put on the Radio 1 playlist, presumably in anticipation of it being a rather bigger hit than it has been thus far). Again we wonder - should it lead or follow? It seems clear that, if Radio 1's playlist were to follow the individual tastes of its presenters, it would wind up looking rather different.

Consider also the Moyles factor, i.e. if Chris Moyles has to play this record will he just rip the piss out of it? They do refer to him as The Saviour, and if there's a tinge of irony there then it's but a tinge - the feller's in a seemingly unassailable Clarkson-esque position at present as the key personality of the station by virtue of being the best light entertainer they have. To what extent do we want daytime DJs to be honest about their opinions of the music they're playing? (This is why Scooter aren't on the Radio 1 playlist - anytime they get played, the DJ will most likely rip the piss)

good point WBS, but all i can say is 'get better DJs'. people who've got the open-minded attitude the station should reflect and cater for, but who can still be funny. it'd be fine for them to not play songs they disliked as long as they were getting the range in elsewhere. discernment is good. if i was on air i'd happily play 'The Question Is What' and 'Jumping All Over The World' but not the Styles/Basshunter/Cascada strand which I can't stand.

If you look at the recent ratings figures for stations like Heart and Magic, for better or worse people listen to those for the music (vile repeat-every-30-minutes-Guantanamo Bay-style as it generally is) rather than patter since the "presenters" (a) say only the basics; (b) probably pre-record all the "links" anyway (I can't remember the technical term for this but it is a widespread practice in commercial radio where presenters can get through a four hour show in ten minutes by just doing the links and not having to listen to any of the music).

isn't Moyles the last big 'ugly fat bloke' to get this kind of gig anyway?

Moyles is a noted radio nerd, apparently very fastidious and professional in the production and composition of his programmes. I'd imagine Scott Mills is the same (think he started his professional radio career at 16). Radio 1's celebrity hosts seem to mainly turn up on the weekends - Vernon Kay, Fearne & Reggie, Kelly Osbourne etc. I don't know why this is, I'm just saying. I dunno what way the celebrity host thing would go with R1, to be honest, it's not something that's traditionally worked out well for them in the end. I think that, in Moyles, they've got a man for whom the Radio 1 Breakfast Show really is the pinnacle of his career. Replacing him would be a very tricky process - fortunately for them, his leaps into TV have generally not gone at all well, and I think he knows that if he stays on radio his reputation is much more secure, and his fame far wider. He's still hungry for the job.

Kid Rock has actually just been removed from the playlist this week. It's been on it for a while. That said, the big scandal was 2 years ago when they adamantly refused to playlist "Hips Don't Lie," even after it topped the charts and was the biggest thing that summer. Radio 1 have never been kind to Shakira. The Beyonce collab was only the second time she's been playlisted. I'm glad though that people still remember the Blu Cantrell incident.

Ratings shouldn't be a concern of BBC Radio - is their mandate really "to entertain" or to provide a service that private sector radio doesn't? The point is it's there regardless of how many or how few people listen to it. But I'd say R1 would actually start getting more listeners if they didn't insist on treating their listeners as having the intelligence level of a three-year-old Down's kid with jingles and trailers every two seconds.

SurprisedDisgusted at The Verve's 3 votes.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

i'd have voted verve! that whole throw some klaxons on that bitch URRUH URRUH URRUH thing is so hilariously bad that i genuinely do enjoy it more than the rest of this list of vaguely-likes and regular-bads.

If Mariah wants to do better she'll obviously have to incorporate some "moanmoansnarlmoangrowlsnalrmoanyeahbabec'mongiveittomesnarlmoansnalmoanyeahc'monisaidyeahc'monmoansnarlgrowl" into her act.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 11:43 (seventeen years ago)

I think lex should be more disgusted at the vote for Keane

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 12:00 (seventeen years ago)

More changes at Radio 1

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 12:01 (seventeen years ago)

Head of programmes Ben Cooper said he wanted to wish Dick and Dom "all the very best and say thanks for their work at Radio 1".

He did that quotey thing with his fingers when he said that.

Mark G, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 12:08 (seventeen years ago)

but it's Proper Pop, Herman

blueski, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

"No peak time non-whites on my watch" quips head of the B*P programmes Ben Cooper

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 12:20 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think The Lex will see Keane as Proper Pop somehow, blueski

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

so does J Majik make Pendulum-style DnB now? that's disappointing

blueski, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

The second of these polls will follow shortly (well, sometime this evening anyhow). Not quite sure if there'll be as much discussion of it, but we shall see...

William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:15 (seventeen years ago)

Don't feel like you have to rush to do it.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

One more note - heard that Cilmi single in the Co-Op on the way to work. By 'eck it's wretched, innit? "Don't say you're up to nothing/You're sure up to something" - eeeeewww...

William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

As I say, Xenomania have lost it and Climi is their Seal, so to speak.

Enough 16-year-old kids to make p43do record company executives wet, more actual talent.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

new Cilmi is just Anastasia 2: The Cutening

Higgins quoted as believeing 'Sweet About Me' is the best thing he's ever done

blueski, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

anastacia was a bit mental though, and her voice was full of character (though sometimes an offputting one) where gaby kill me's is deader than duffy.

can't believe only marcello and myself recognise the precipitous decline of xenomania.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

The Radio 1 Punk Show Poll is here, by the way.

William Bloody Swygart, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

what is the actual difference between Cilmi's voice on her new song and Anastacia on 'I'm Outta Love' if any?

i guess people bought it with anastacia cos she looked older and less cute.

blueski, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

anastacia sung as though she had a vague idea what her lyrics meant? i mean has there been a less convincing line in music this year than "there's nothing sweet about me".

there's some terrific faux-xenomania stuff happening on danity kane's '2 of you', but real xeno have long lost any life they had.

lex pretend, Thursday, 21 August 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)

Anastacia at least sounds like she's singing in her own voice, as opposed to Grade VI Billie Holiday tutorial class notes.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 August 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

I saw Cilmi supporting Nouvelle Vague at the start of the year. A strange performance, as she seemed to be addressing herself to an imaginary TV camera rather than the 200-odd people that were actually standing in front of her. There was no connection at all, just a kind of preening self-regard. And she murdered "Can't Get You Out Of My Head".

mike t-diva, Thursday, 21 August 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

she looks and sounds a lot older than 16 which is impressive and disturbing in equal measure really. if only the music was that interesting.

blueski, Thursday, 21 August 2008 11:15 (seventeen years ago)

Agreed. We were staggered - staggered, I tell you! - to discover after the gig that she was only 16.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 21 August 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

can't believe only marcello and myself recognise the precipitous decline of xenomania.

There's a whole discussion about it on the Annie thread somewhere. It pretty much boils down to "you guys have got lazy, get one new idea, or ideally several like in the old days".

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 August 2008 11:25 (seventeen years ago)

Slipknot is still around? What? The GWAR joke is over.

Chelvis, Thursday, 21 August 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

Had we had this poll this week, btw, then Vampire Weekend wouldn't have been on it, and neither would Ida Maria, Solange or Bloc Party.

It would, however, have included:

Chris Brown ft. Nelly (?) - Kiss Kiss (T-Pain officially not bothering with the UK, then)
Estelle ft. Cee-Lo - Pretty Please (Love Me)
The Feeling - Join With Us (We're In The Glovebox)
McFly - Lies
Pink - So What
The Zutons - What's Your Problem
Axwell & Bob Sinclar ft. Ron Carroll - What A Wonderful World (is this as bad as it looks on paper?)
Common ft. Pharrell Williams - Universal Mind Control
Ladyhawke - Dust Till Dawn
Sway ft. Lemar - Saturday Night Hustle

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, and no Cilmi either.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

Sway ft. Lemar - Saturday Night Hustle

So this is the new Dizzee and Calvin Harris then?

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

Was listening to that Lovedough Sway mixtape from 05 earlier on... man that shit was awesome. "Smash you up like conkers/Put you on the corner like Londis"

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

oh so i guess 'f ur x' passed the charts by then :(

lex pretend, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

'kiss kiss' is the only newly playlisted track which could give the seventh best song on e=mc2 a run for its money but i haven't heard the nelly version. the t-pain version was already released last year anyway, why are they releasing it again??

lex pretend, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

Cos the T-Pain version didn't crack top 30, unlike, say, every Chris Brown single since.

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

38 Chris Brown featuring T-Pain Kiss Kiss Nov 2007
8 Chris Brown With You Mar 2008
4 Chris Brown Forever Jun 2008

William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 21 August 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)
