!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!~~~FINALLY - 2009 ILX Albums 'n' Trax Poll voting thread ahoy~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (VOTING CLOSED: lol Whiney)

Actually I noticed we are starting two days earlier than last year and the deadline is the same so I think we're good.

Also, please do a quick check of the nom list to make sure that spelling is okay, titles and correct, and most importantly that there are no omissions.

Standard rules, same as before.

How it works:

  • You can vote for up 20 albums AND 20 tracks. That's 40 total. They are not transferable, so you cannot vote for 1 album and 39 tracks.
  • You may vote in one of two ways: ordered and non-ordered. You can order your list, and I will give 20 points to your #1 ranked item and 1 point to your 20th ranked item. Be sure when sending me your ballot that your top-ranked item is at the top of the list. If you can't be bothered, you can submit an unranked list and each item will receive 10.5 points.
http://i47.tinypic.com/2yl60c3.gif DO NOT NUMBER YOUR BALLOTS!!! Just tell me that they are ordered (Number one pick on top) or not ordered

http://i47.tinypic.com/2yl60c3.gif DO NOT FREEFORM TYPE YOUR VOTES; COPY AND PASTE THEM FROM THE NOMINATION LIST INTO YOUR EMAIL

  • Blurbs, anecdotes, etc are welcomed. I will not be emailing people after I tally the votes to solicit blurbs, so if you have something please send it with your ballot.
Due date: Friday, January 22nd (Jazzy Jeff's birthday), 2009, 11:59pm.

******************Lists of nominations

******************Ballot submittal form ***new*** <<<<<<<<-this is where you are sending your ballots, don't email them to me this time.

My contact info is on the main page if you need to email me.

Have fun.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

no, I want to catch all these, especially ones where artist/title are transposed because that means that people might miss them when making their ballots...

Stina Nordenstam - The World Is Saved is from 2004?

[not a correction (i think), but someone nominated Z-Ro - Relvis Presley, but not Z-Ro - Cocaine???]

zvookster, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

etienne jaumet - repeat again after me (ame remix) is from 2008 (not even tail end of 08/nearly 09, well inside 08)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 00:59 (sixteen years ago)

I would like to point out that Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3 was NOT nominated, even though it appears in the albums list. Ilxor mentioned it as a big one yet to be nominated, but did not include it in his actual nominations list.

pugwant (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:01 (sixteen years ago)

badge of pride

zvookster, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:02 (sixteen years ago)

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:11 (sixteen years ago)

btw I will crosscheck for any dupe noms for a "The such-and-such" and "[dropped The] such-and-such" shortly, I'm sure there are a few that need to be removed...

Lindstrom and Christabelle - Baby Can't Stop (Aeroplane remix)

pugwant (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:34 (sixteen years ago)

on second thought, those may be different

pugwant (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:36 (sixteen years ago)

some noms were posted after some casual talk of a decade poll. so there are a few albums that should be removed:

Bob Drake - The Skull Mailbox (2002)
Roddy Frame - Surf (2004)
Life Without Buildings - Any Other City (2000)

and some trax:

Mint Royale ft. Lauren Laverne - Don't Falter (2000)
Louis Philippe - Fires Rise and Die (2004)
Chris Eckman - Healing Waters of the Flood (2004)
My Favorite - The Happiest Days of My Life (2003)
Smoosh - Find a Way (2006)

zvookster, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:39 (sixteen years ago)

as far as I can tell the 2 lindstrom/christabelle/aeroplane are the same

pugwant (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:40 (sixteen years ago)

Animal Collective "My Girls" nominated for trax, missing from final list.

Ekkehard`Ehlers - Ballads should be: Ekkehard Ehlers & Paul Wirkus - Ballads

oh (skeletor), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:44 (sixteen years ago)

The Flaming Lips "Watching the Planets" also missing from final TRAX nominations list (this was my submission, there's no way I won't vote for the darn thing).

this is 2008

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 01:54 (sixteen years ago)

sound of silver was 2007 I CAN'T REMEMBER CAN I

lol hercules and love affair came 2nd and lindstrom 3rd, a triumph for albums that take half a year to date and eight months for everybody to completely forget

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:01 (sixteen years ago)

The Flaming Lips "Watching the Planets" also missing from final TRAX nominations list (this was my submission, there's no way I won't vote for the darn thing).

Scratch this, I found it alphabetized under "The" instead of "Flaming" and got my votes finished. Still, Animal Collective "My Girls" is still missing and was nominated. I didn't vote for it but I'm sure some folks will want to do so...

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:07 (sixteen years ago)

Animal Collective "My Girls" nominated for trax, missing from final list.

that was on someone's list when they originally nominated about 50 things, when he redid his list he didn't include it.

see Flaming Lips, The, it's on there

musically, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:12 (sixteen years ago)

and I think dub and remix can be two distinct things, I mean it's basically nominating the instrumental but since it doesn't add much complication and it doesn't split the vote I don't have a problem with allowing both to be nominated.

musically, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:15 (sixteen years ago)

that was on someone's list when they originally nominated about 50 things, when he redid his list he didn't include it.

No way... I would have included it in my noms, had I known. Pretty "significant" record that is going to be shut out of the ILX poll, I guess.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:19 (sixteen years ago)

Fever Ray: "Keep The Streets Empty For Me" was nominated, although I think it was written as "Leave The Streets...", which might have thrown you off, musically.

Lostandfound, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:22 (sixteen years ago)

that was another of the over-noms that was cut. yes, i agree, it does suck. i don't have a huge problem adding the ones that were cut except that it's not fair to people who actually read the rules and limited themselves to 15 nominations.

musically, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:27 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I guess if it doesn't exist then it should be taken off...

musically, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:34 (sixteen years ago)

My Baby Can't Stop EP has an Aeroplane Vocal Mix and an Aeroplane Dub Mix along with the Idjut Boys Remix and the Radio Edit and the Album Version so I would hazard that they are distinct things.

Alex in Montreal, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 02:58 (sixteen years ago)

"my girls" not being on the trax list is hilarious

xp guys doesnt matter.....vote for one they all get counted as the same

k3vin k., Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:00 (sixteen years ago)

xp: okay, I think that settles it. they should both be on the list

pugwant (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:08 (sixteen years ago)

hmm... the "my girls" thing is kinda annoying for those of us who just did a quick crtl-f of the nominations thread to see what had already been nominated.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

loooooooooool

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:35 (sixteen years ago)

I added Animal Collective - My Girls and Fever Ray - Keep The Streets Empty For Me, I don't want something popular to be left off on a technicality, in the future I'll make sure that the entire post is removed so people don't see it.

musically, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:38 (sixteen years ago)

and Lindstrøm & Christabelle - Real Life Is No Cool is 2010, true or false? All signs I am seeing point to 2010 release, not 2009...

musically, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:45 (sixteen years ago)

Correct. It was apparently available to a select few through Rough Trade in the last week or two of 2009, but it's official release wasn't until 2010.

Alex in Montreal, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:49 (sixteen years ago)

ya that really shouldn't be on there, i don't think.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 03:53 (sixteen years ago)

haaa i think you did the right thing musically re "my girls" but it would have been v funny if you held out

k3vin k., Wednesday, 13 January 2010 05:19 (sixteen years ago)

I was enjoying that even more the lack of Blueprint 3.

pugwant (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 05:51 (sixteen years ago)

Hey, so noting that I've missed a lot of stuff—Last year, my top three were The OhSees, Black Mountain and Indian Jewelry. Since I love the new OhSees album, what else might I have missed that I'd really love off this list?

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 06:26 (sixteen years ago)

That Toro Y Moi album is 2010, btw. It leaked in December or something, but it's not official until Feb or so of this year.

Bit of a shock to discover that nobody nominated Bonkers, Remedy or Bulletproof, but I'll live!

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 10:32 (sixteen years ago)

man, putting together my albums ballot is so easy and narrowing down my tracks ballot is so hard

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 10:43 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't started on tracks yet, but after thinking this wasn't a great year for my music listening, my longlist for albums is surprisingly long. Got it down to about 50 now, although some of these are still 'must check this out before submitting ballot' albums.

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 10:57 (sixteen years ago)

I asked this on the last thread, but I don't think it was answered. Are Desire - Desire and Desire - II the same album?

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 11:02 (sixteen years ago)

You know, I was pretty sure The Blueprint 3 had been nominated too.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 11:04 (sixteen years ago)

also, Fuck Buttons trax folk, what ya'll thinkin'? Lisbon Maru is probs my fav, but Surf Solar being the single and all...

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 11:05 (sixteen years ago)

Agreed, I'd figure "Surf Solar" may get a much lower placing due to vote splitting (it has my vote, though -- can't do much more than that).

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 12:46 (sixteen years ago)

Omission from the trax list: Major Lazer - Pon De Floor

YouTube pimping is all well and good but I'm not voting for anything I didn't already listen to and love in 2009. There's enough of that without adding other things to the field.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 16:20 (sixteen years ago)

i pimped this on the other pimping thread but i'll pimp it here too just cuz i think it's a sort of lovely song (about dying/watching somebody die).

we seem to know for sure that there's both a 2009 and a 2010 release date, someone just has to make a judgment call. fwiw looks like 3 different versions were released in 2009... http://www.discogs.com/Lindstr%C3%B8m-Christabelle-Real-Life-Is-No-Cool/master/205425

psychgawsple, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

I'd say it should probably go in a 2010 poll, because I love it and want it to place highly. It won't in a 2009 poll, purely by virtue of unfamiliarity to a lot of people.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

most of what i'll vote for should fare pretty well with the greater ilm population, but i've gotta pimp the bitters because there has been but a little love, mostly from dudes on rolling punk. anyways, this was by far the best lo-fi garage pop i heard this year, about six billion times better than wavves or ganglians, and far closer to my heart than smith westerns ever got.

Things I wish I'd had the presence of mind to nominate: The King Khan & BBQ Show - Invisible Girl (the album), Theophilus London - "Cold Pillow" (even though I'd probably be the only vote) and Japandroids - "Wet Hair"

Things I nominated and didn't vote for: NOMO - Invisible Cities and Finale - A Pipe Dream and a Promise (which are both great, btw)

Things I nominated that don't have much of a shot, I'm afraid: Das Racist, Theophilus London, and Franz Nicolay

Songs I nominated I'd love to see gain some traction: Guido - "Way You Make Me Feel" (stands a chance cuz of another ILM thread!), Burial & Four Tet - "Moth" and Teengirl Fantasy - "Portofino"

Parenthetical Grillz, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

xpost: i thought i nominated Guido. Either way, its gonna be there in my 20 chosen trax. Love it lots.

Also, once we've submitted, is it generally the done thing to post your votes here?

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

xp- the lindstrom & christabelle would still place, i'm sure! maybe not top 5 like it deserves, but it'd place.

yo parenthetical grillz vote for 'invisible girl' the song instead! it may be only the second best track on the album after "third avenue" but it's a better sell for most people i'd imagine.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

I'd say it should probably go in a 2010 poll, because I love it and want it to place highly. It won't in a 2009 poll, purely by virtue of unfamiliarity to a lot of people.

Yes, let's wait until 2010. I'm sure a lot of American listeners (myself included) have heard the odd YouTube track or otherwise leaked/online version, but haven't had access to a CD-quality version along with time to let it sink in.

Olenka and the Autumn Lovers:

Folk band from London, Canada - lead singer grew up under communism in Poland, songs veer from country-inflected on the Papillonette EP to Eastern European folky on the LP (Sample song title: "A Story of the Forging of Little Olek's Social Realist Spirit"). A few samples, although the EP is available on iTunes. The LP isn't, unfortunately, but it's around on CD Baby and zunior and some other places...Unassuming at first but slowly became one of my most listened to groups of '09, esp. the Papillonette EP. Doubt anyone but me will throw them votes given that they're barely known in Canada, let alone outside it, but if they gain a few ears I wouldn't mind at all.

I'm a little sad that votes will be split between Azari & III's 2 nominations. Which do people generally prefer? I think Reckless With Your Love >>> Hungry for the Power, though I might end up voting for both.

lou, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

Mmm. I thought Hungry for the Power was the consensus track but I am down for strategizing the other way.

A friend of mine from first yr of uni is DJ-ing an opening set for them this Friday in Montreal - I'd be crazy not to go, right?

Alex in Montreal, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

My preference runs the other way. Given only 20 slots, I wouldn't vote for "Reckless" either way, even though I like it fairly well. There are just too many things I'm more passionate about, "Hungry for the Power" included.

surfboard rock gets hyped up, totally (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

surfboard rock gets hyped up, totally (The Reverend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

if i vote for azari & iii, it'll be "reckless with your love", but right now i does look like it'll be shut out of my 20

considering ignoring all electrik red/dream/taylor swift/quik & kurupt trax just because the albums are what need to be repped and i need to free up some space, though may make an exception for "fancy"

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

Alex in Montreal: yeah, definitely go see Azari & III - unless some major issue would prevent you; better than dealing with regrets of not.

I'm voting for Hungry For The Power over Reckless. I love Reckless, but using whatever logic I'm employing to cut down my list it just doesn't scrape into the top 20.

we already had this discussion like a month ago but dude "Rockin'" is by far the biggest hit from the album and pretty well regarded in general

anyway the redundancy of voting for deep cuts off stuff that's already on your albums vote, and quibbling over which track to vote for and whether to form a bloc to support one in particular, is just one of the many reasons why i always favor singles lists over 'tracks' lists. but i did fill out the lower spots of my ballot with some album tracks since not all of my favorite singles were nominated (including 2 Love Vs. Money tracks that aren't "Fancy" ha).

Yeah, the Zombi album is enjoyable.

The Mew track = lush epic with vocal polyphony and a great passage in 11. The right side of bombastic. Etienne Jaumet = makes 3/4 work as a house beat. Sax skronk. Trippy.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 18 January 2010 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

it's pretty terrific, I don't have to do any formatting or extra work, I just have to add a points column, which will probably take about 5 minutes, and then do a pivot table to calculate points. it will probably take me about 30 minutes total at the most.

well Fearless was nominated but i'm guessing most people will pass on it bc of the release date

Moreno, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:17 (sixteen years ago)

I'd like to start posting tracks on Monday, so if you can get me your blurbs by then, I'll add them.

musically, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

i'm pretty excited to see these results, could be a good palate-cleanser after P&J

some dude, Friday, 22 January 2010 03:22 (sixteen years ago)

I'm cross-checking my lists vs. the noms & am surprised to see that neither the Clipse or Royce da 5'9" albums were nominated.

ron paul revulvalution (Pillbox), Friday, 22 January 2010 03:27 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for Fearless because it had no real traction in the UK until 2009. Also Love Story was released in 2009 over here as well, so that got my vote. Thought You Belong to Me would be the strategic choice, but gave up on that and just went with what I preferred. Same goes for Fuck Buttons and The-Dream tracks.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Friday, 22 January 2010 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

voted

Bee OK, Friday, 22 January 2010 05:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, fearless had a UK 2009 release date, plus the platinum edition was 2009. though my vote is really for the US original version - UK version screws it up with "pop remixes" ugh, platinum edition screws up the track sequencing - so i guess it's cheating somewhat but whatever

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 22 January 2010 10:54 (sixteen years ago)

and yeah genuinely enthused about seeing these results

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 22 January 2010 10:55 (sixteen years ago)

our results will shit on this year's P&J from a very GRATE height, i predict!

the not-metal one (Ioannis), Friday, 22 January 2010 12:25 (sixteen years ago)

Sorry if this has already been said, but can I just send a top 10 for tracks? I'm stuck staring at the list and I know if I try to do all 20 it'll never be finished, whereas if I can just chuck 10 in there it'll be fine.

And for some reason I was operating under the impression it was 30 slots each, so now I'm going to have to get rid of 10 albums. Gah.

emil.y, Friday, 22 January 2010 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

Oh no shit I only voted for fifteen of each, oops duh! Does that screw things up? Only my albums were ranked btw.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Friday, 22 January 2010 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

I am taking Wicked Witch off my ballot, even though it was initially quite high, as it isn't technically an album from this year. I am very sorry. It deserves to place anyway.

emil.y, Friday, 22 January 2010 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

(As in, it's a reissue... which means it's still eligible, just not for my ruthless cutting purposes.)

emil.y, Friday, 22 January 2010 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

emil.y, you can vote for as few as you like - just no more than 20 apiece

ethan PADGY (k3vin k.), Friday, 22 January 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

my trax are way faggier than my albums, half of which im kinda only eh abt which surprised me.

plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 22 January 2010 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks, Kevin. It looks like I'm voting for 12 tracks in the end. AND putting Wicked Witch back on my albums, just docking it some points. It needs to be there.

emil.y, Friday, 22 January 2010 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

ballots due today!

musically, Friday, 22 January 2010 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

It looks like I'm voting for 12 tracks in the end

tell you what, emil.y, I'll give you 8 tracks to vote for and you give me 8 albums. I'm struggling to get to 20 albums especially now that RLINC has been cruelly and vindictively booted off the noms list ;)

Jeff W, Friday, 22 January 2010 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

Aw, I've sent mine in now. But in case you want to do some last minute listening, have you considered the Trembling Bells, Belbury Poly or Position Normal albums? Note that these are not the top 3 of my poll, but ones that I think may be overlooked and could do with extra votes. I've kind of reconciled myself with the fact that I'll be the only person to vote for Arthur & Martha, otherwise I'd be pushing for them, too.

emil.y, Friday, 22 January 2010 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

Also, if you want something rockier, I didn't vote for Lovvers in the end, but they're good guys and could do with some lovve.

emil.y, Friday, 22 January 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

Belbury Poly may well feature somewhere on my ballot :)

I've only heard one track from the position normal cassette, but I liked it.

Jeff W, Friday, 22 January 2010 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

bump

musically, Friday, 22 January 2010 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

musically, Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:42 (sixteen years ago)

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:53 (sixteen years ago)

end of the day for the person's time zone

musically, Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:58 (sixteen years ago)

i told jacob about it and he's doing it now

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:02 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, I just assumed it was 11:59 pm PST (so 2:59 am EST)?

Sundar, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:42 (sixteen years ago)

End of the day for wherever, I guess, with the absolute latest ballots being counted if received before 11:59 PST.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:43 (sixteen years ago)

i didn't want people to have to convert PST to their time, so just submit it while it's the 22nd where you are. I won't be doing the calculations at midnight anyway so i don't care.

musically, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:57 (sixteen years ago)

Agreed about the Major Lazer "Pon de floor" omission, also "Hold the Line"

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 23 January 2010 02:03 (sixteen years ago)

Easy for me to run stats for you, if you'd like, musically. Drop me a note (glenn at furia dot com) if you're interested...

k3vin k., Saturday, 23 January 2010 04:39 (sixteen years ago)

i personally think it's awesome

k3vin k., Saturday, 23 January 2010 04:40 (sixteen years ago)

So… I only paid money (which I consider the base level of actual YES! interest in music anymore) for 18 albums out of the list, but at least I got a ballot in. A thin, lonely ballot that won't change anything, but hey, I voted for Nader.

Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Saturday, 23 January 2010 05:00 (sixteen years ago)

Sorry, Oneida and Sunn O)))! Too many good albums in 2009 and more than 20 I still want to hear.

Sundar, Saturday, 23 January 2010 05:55 (sixteen years ago)

Oneida is top ten, though... :'(
