Fudge Tunnel would have been my vote in a BEST poll

At the time I was definitely most into Therapy?, but their music sounds kind of tame now. I've got a soft spot for Dub War and Senser - both incorporated unusual influences and both put on a great live show.

Fudge Tunnel are a bit too metal.

listening again to the only song of any of these bands i know, 'waydown' by catherine wheel. not-a so good.

I found myself listening to Senser the other day thinking they surely had a track for the "90s songs to mention computers and/or the internet" thread. They were not as bad as their reputation but certainly not as amazing as I thought they were when I was 15. Also their lyrics are such a sea of bubbling free-association shite that even the song which does have a little rant about the people all being, like, just numbers on the government's computers, maaan, couldn't go on the thread because it would've taken too much explaining.

Pledge: A Tribute to Kerbdog’ is a tribute to album to Irish rock band Kerbdog. Despite splitting up in 1998 and only recording two albums, the band has influenced many present day bands. Therapy? - saw them once early on, supporting the Moving Targets or Bitch Magnet or some similar US band. Was okay, bought the single off the band
Skunk Anansie - supporting Come at the Underworld yay!

First time I saw Therapy? was when they were on Wiiija and associated vaguely with Silverfish, Th' Faith Healers and those bands, wasn't it called Camden Lurch? They seemed far better than their contemporaries (i.e. they could play) but they pretty swiftly shed the Big Black / Jesus Lizard influences and moved into the popular "fraggle rock" genre, and started to suck big time.

I know a guy who has a Therapy? tattoo, the fool.

1st 2 eps and album (nurse) therapy? were awesome. Troublegum was pretty good and everything after was shit (esp infernal love)
The Wildhearts i saw many times live and were great apart from the last time i saw them where they played songs from their most recent at the time shitty album and ginger just abused the crowd and walked off after less than an hour. never cared for them since.

the 2 best bands by far on this poll though.

Wonder what a British techno-rap-metal best-of from the 90s, with Senser, Dub War, Pitchshifter and Apollo 440 would sound like?

these guys had their moments too:

Compulsion - saw them many times, as they supported every band going. good live band, bit dull on record.
Headswim - first album fantastic: totally unique and bizarre psychedelic west country metal with some serious grooves. then they turned into coldplay overnight. inexplicable.
King Prawn - some decent tunes.
Senser - great in their heyday, still great now. brilliant live band. the last two albums (schematic and how to do battle) were really good too.
Skunk Anansie - initially brilliant, great live band, totally refreshing sound. quickly turned to mush.
Therapy? - good at first, became tired. screamager, teethgrinder and opel mantra remain tunes.
Wildhearts – some great tunes, some not so great. extra kudos for tim smith and devin townsend connections.

Still have a soft spot for Trailer by Ash, though it isn't hard rock at all. Owned stuff by Compulsion and Senseless Things. Would find it much easier to vote for worst.

Never liked Pitch Shifter or Fudge Tunnel but growing up in Nottingham you get a bit protective of them anyway.

Yeah, I did buy the first EP and the first couple of singles when they came out. Was really into the Replacements at the time, and they were one of the few UK bands in those days that had that sort of sound. John Peel played them quite a bit iirc.

The early stuff is closer to melodic hardcore than indie, it's the mid-period you want for that.

yeah well its too much kissing will get the votes here (i love that stuff and totally regret selling my 2xCD with it on it, but its not what this poll is about) but i love empire of the senseless which does count. But im voting wildhearts for the 1st album. 1st 2 therapy? eps & albums ran it close but infernal love was such a fall off and major disappointment it killed them for me

Voted Ash, for personal, but the Senseless things were that rare thing, saw them supporting the reformed Buzzcocks, they impressed.

i loved senseless things.

the early singles, the albums etc just hit the spot for me (not so much the bands final album if i'm honest).

summary : when jamie h stopped drawing the covers they lost some of the appeal for me, as they seemed to want to become serious.

also loved compulsion.
live they were fantastic.
some of the records matched the live action, and the final album, (future is medium), is a bit of a lost classic.
they introduced electronics to the bands sound (signs that garrett was 'becoming' jacknife lee), and really fine tuned their songs into major earworms.

of course it should be said that i saw compulsion several times during '94-'96 when i was in my last throws of indiedom/student daze, so both these bands were probably the last guitar based bands i really fell in line with due to some longing for more nights of misspent freedom (the scary world of parenting loomed on the horizon when i last saw compulsion @ reading '96)
