waffles.fm goes live in under an hour. invites will soon be available; please read this entire post before responding.
As a result of the OiNK.cd shutdown, we have had an influx of requests for waffles invites. At this time our servers are at their maximum load and we can not accept new members. However, we are working to expand our resources and will be able to accommodate a large percentage of the OiNK diaspora at a date in the near future (hopefully by mid November).
Since we will not be able to accommodate 180,000 new members all at once, we must exercise some discretion when welcoming new members into our p2p family. To give us an idea as to where you are coming from, we require you to answer the following:
a) requested username b) first name (no surnames) c) age d) gender e) geographic location f) desired avatar (no cute avatars allowed)
1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers
2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences. 2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months? 4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).

Selected applicants will be notified here or via webmail. Within 24 hours you will receive your invite.
Thanks for your interest, and good luck!!!!!!!

A ratio is a way to track a user’s contribution to a site. There are two factors to a ratio, the amount of data uploaded, and the amount of data downloaded. A ratio is calculated by dividing the amount uploaded by the amount downloaded. For example if a user has uploaded 160 GB, and downloaded 30 GB his ratio would be 5.33. 2b) If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!) My ratio at the time of closing was 5.8. 3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum). African American culture has a long influence on Western Popular music. The most notable influence began in the 1950s with the advent of Rock and Roll, and escalated with the rise in popularity of Elvis Presley. Elvis was heavily influenced by the blues sound, and mixed “white” music and “black” music. Elvis’ popularity continued to rise in the 1960s, as did the influence of African American music. The 1960s also saw the rise of Motown, which began as a record label owned by an African American releasing music created by African Americans. Artists such as the Supremes, found crossover success and were embraced by American pop culture. Many bands similar to the Supremes also found success and influence. This is really just the beginning; the most recent influence is in the form of hip hop. Hip hop began on the streets of New York in the 1970s. A prime example of its influence and acceptance by Western popular music is the rap category in the grammy awards.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months? 1) Modest Mouse – We were dead before the ship even sank 2) The Shins – Wincing the night Away 3) Lily Allen – Alright, Still 4) Minus the Bear - Planet of Ice 5) Fountains of Wayne – Traffic and Weather
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born? 1) Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Rust Never Sleeps 2) The Specials – The Specials 3) Bob Marley and The Wailers – Survival 4) Van Halen – Van Halen II 5) The Who - Quadrophenia 5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum). The most unjust pitchfork numerical rating was the official release of Fiona Apple’s Exrtraordinary Machine. A release of the album produced by John Brion was leaked onto the internet, many thought this was a great release, the record company disagreed, and changes were made. The John Brion release received a rating of 7.8 whereas the official release received a 6.2. I believe this to be the perfect example of pitchfork rating an album based on factors outside of the realm of the music itself. At the time it was sort of cool to dislike the official release. I listened to both versions, and personally thought the official was just as good as, if not better than the leaked version. This is just one of many examples of situations just like this. 6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum). I would have to choose Morrissey. His music has always been consistently high quality. The smiths are one of my favorite bands from the 80s. His lyrics, while sometimes depressing, can be quite witty, and entertaining. Plus, his social commentary is spot on: “America Is Not The World”. Moby’s music is tolerable, but I think I would go insane after a while, because it would all sound the same after a while. I’m not sure who Momus is, and while I enjoy discovering new music, I would not want it for a desert island.

2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences. A ratio is the amount of data uploaded, divided by the amount of data downloaded. A ratio is how you make sure that deadbeats aren't leeching without contributing. A ratio doesn't need a three sentence explanation.
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music. Black people created the Blues. The Blues met Country and begat R&B. R&B begat Rock & Roll. The Blues begat Gospel. Gospel begat Soul. Soul begat Funk and Reggae. Reggae begat Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop begat Rap.

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? I don't read that shit.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? I choose Morrissey, because who better to feel sorry for yourself with, stranded on a desert island as you are, than Mr. Nosebleeds himself. Robert Smith, that's who, but he wasn't one of the options. Moby is like the worst shit I never listened to in high school so I wouldn't start now. Momus is alright but Josef K was better. I could be consoled in my miserable fate if I had The Queen is Dead. Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head.

2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences. This is the ratio of recieved data routed through the tracker over the amount sent.
2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!) 0.84 and rising. I spent hours responding to requests to get power user+ status from a 0.71 ratio in the week before they were shut down!
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum). Its not hard to see these days, with hip hop being the style of the masses in this neck of the woods. Most people do not realize that techno has African American roots (even though they are suburban roots). The 'big three' in Detroit turned Kraftwerk into the format that inspired many. Chuck did the same for rock and roll. Kingston music ossified itself into dub, reggae, etc. These styles made their way to Brixton where they had a massive amount of influence on British music. Even earlier than that, the northern soul movement was inspired by rare recordings of primarily black soul and proto-funk from America. Jazz was raised in Harlem, a predominantly black area on the island of Manhattan. Even classical music was heavily affected by the adaptation of African polyrhythms by composers like Reich. Disco began primarily as a homosexual African American phenomenon centered in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. That is where and when the modern DJ first existed (I don't believe that Jamaican DJs worked in the same format at all). I know Grasso wasn't black, but this is about culture and not individuals, right?
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months? False - 2007 Gaiser - Eye Contact Pram - The Moving Frontier Shape of Broad Minds - Craft of the Lost Art Onur Ozer - Red Cabaret
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born? Miles Davis - Bitches Brew Scientist - Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 2 The Other People Place - Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe Burial - Burial
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum). Vladislav Delay - Demon Tracks (2.5 stars) This is still one of the most original ambient albums I have ever heard. It sounds like someone in their artistic prime. It must have taken forever and yet it sounds fresh as if it was improvised. It is a natural progression from his earlier work, yet it was incredibly surprising on the first listens. And to cap it off, he made this incredible and extremely 'trippy' album after going sober.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum). I'd have to go along with Morrisey. I didn't get into the Smiths early enough to keep up with his fans and the bands they got into. Maybe that is why I don't understand a lot of modern indie rock. It didn't choose him because I would rather listen to his music (which I would). Its not because he looks good in a blouse. Its because I'm not getting laid ever again and I want Morrisey to make me feel okay about that.

2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences. it's the amount of data you've uploaded vs. downloaded. if you've uploaded an equal amount as you've downloaded, you've got a 1-to-1 ratio, usually represented as 1.0. the ratio is used on private trackers to keep people sharing like they should be.
2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!) it was around 0.95 - i had it up to 2.0 but was being sandvine'd towards the end.
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum). Western culture simply wouldn't be the same, worldwide, if not for Af-Am culture. The Blues influenced the biggest rock & roll groups of the century. Jazz and Soul had a major impact on Jamaican culture which in turn influenced the whole of global culture through DJ'ing, & studio techniques pioneered there. Those transplanted Jamaicans in NYC went on to invent Hip Hop - an indirect way Black American culture came full circle. Chicago House and Detroit Techno - both black and in many cases gay music - spawned a global dance culture via the UK. Don't forget dancing - from the 30's jazz era through yesterday black americans have been inventing new moves on the dancefloor, whether the Jitterbug or the Aunt Jackie. Ditto for slang - much of what's cool to say comes from Af-Am culture -- including the word "cool" itself. Would we have a worldwide radio culture, with constant access to new music, if the clamoring for new music coming out of American ghettos wasn't at a fever pitch in the 50's? Black culture = American culture = Earth culture.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months? Studio - West Coast Prins Thomas presents Cosmo Galactic Prism Lindstrom & Prins Thomas - Reinterpretations Sorcerer - White Magic Gui Boratto - Chromophobia
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born? Stevie Wonder - Innervisions Can - Ege Bam Yasi Neu! 2 Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum). who cares about pitchfork ratings? if everyone cared about what pitchfork thought about anything, p2p sites would be as homogeneous as radio (US radio at least). I don't read it enough to know or care, frankly.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum). Morrissey, come on. Being stranded with Moby's music would mean that although you'd have "Go" and "Next is the E", you're also stuck with the rest of his completely inoffensive and shit-boring catalogue, so no, thanks. Momus? really? seriously? i'm supposed to compare Morrissey to Momus? Not worth the pixels. With Morrissey you get not just great tunes but insightful lyrics to think about while you spend your day cracking open coconuts and killing lizards to eat. I'm not the biggest fan of his but i do own a lot of his work and find it inspiring on at least a music level.

Difficult question. There is the argument that the origins of Jazz started from the call and response signing of African American slaves. Certainly Jazz is the first original American art form and was for the most part African American. The blues launched a thousand white rock careers. The backbeat. Motown (regardless that members of the Funk Brothers were white) which remains the best pop music ever performed. I have a huge fondness for African American music. I wrote a profile of ‘Chic’ here http://popturemagazine.com/node/16.

4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born? Prince - Purple Rain Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense Minute Men - Double Nickels on the Dime Cocteau Twins - Treasure R.E.M. - Reckoning
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum). I don’t pay attention to the ratings so I can’t think of a historical injustice. But recently, Muscles 'Guns Babes Lemonade' Rating: 8.3. These are local kids that I have seen many times and are cookie cutter Modular Records trash. Pitchfork hailed them as the final synthesis of dance music with heartfelt songs. I’d rather we went back to listening to Cut Copy, who’s new stuff sounds a lot like early nineties New Order. 6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum). I’d choose Morrissey. Each year far too many people listen to alone in their bedrooms. My bedroom would be a desert island. I also like the idea of giving Morrissey some sunlight. When I got bored –which would be quickly- I’d fashion instruments from coconuts and do Lionel Richie covers. 7) BONUS REQUIREMENT: Please post a picture of yourself. 1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers - Nada Surf - The Proximity Effect - Danny Elfman - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory S/T - Blind Melon - Goodfoot
2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.
- A ratio represents the value of a user's contributions. For example, if you upload twice as many files as you download, your ratio would be 2.0. This is to ensure that members are sharing their music, thereby contributing it to other users.
2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)
I was, and my ratio hovered around 2.550 for the last 6 months of OiNK's existence.
Simply put, Western popular music would not exist as we know it without the African American culture. Looking backward, the R&B sound that we are so familiar with was born out of the jazz and blues of the early 20th century. These types of music were born from the slave songs of the nineteenth century and before. As far as rock music, all of the most influential pop bands of the twentieth century used elements of the R&B, specifically the "Motown" sound. Artists like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Paul Simon, and countless others have embraced Motowns influence by covering tunes from the genre during their live shows and on their albums. In turn, the widespread airplay these bands received as a result of radio and other media helped them spread the influence of African American culture. It is nearly assured that every musician playing today is influenced in one way or another by this culture.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months? 1. Iron and Wine - The Shepherds Dog 2. Dinosaur Jr. - Beyond 3. Radiohead - In Rainbows 4. The White Stripes - Icky Thump 5. Mavis Staples - Well Never Turn Back
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?
1979 1. Pink Floyd - The Wall 2. The Police - Regatta de Blanc 3. Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps 4. Talking Heads - Fear of Music 5. The Clash - London Calling
No idea.
I would choose Moby. This seems to be the logical choice because of the time factor. Not that he necessarily has the largest catalog of music, but because its a trip to dissect his tunes. Its impossible to get sick of those complex rhythms and grooves! Hes a diverse artist that can peak my interest at any time, no boredom there.

3) African American music influenced pop culture since the rise of blues and jazz, which began going mainstream around the time of the Harlem Renaissance, when the music was finally allowed to mature. Throughout the early nineteenth century these genres as well as r&b and soul grew to greater and greater mainstream popularity. As son as rock & roll was born African American artists like Bo Diddley, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry were on the scene and rose to incredible popularity. In the 60s black women like Aretha Franklin began rising to fame. Then Jimi Hendrix one of the greatest guitar players of all time came and merged the blues, funk, and psychedelic into a string of hits and widespread popularity. With his original take on distortion and wild antics he secured his name legendary status. In the 70's Sly & the Family Stone continued to the funk rock tradition until Michael Jackson Prince, and others changed the path African American music towards its current position. With their pop-dance routines they spawned a massive following. Meanwhile Run-D.M.C. and others brought rap to the mainstream and both these genres have held their popualrity to the present day.

5) http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/15658-brian-jonestown-massacre-bravery-repetition-and-noise Brian Jonestown Massacre - Bravery, Repetition and Noise First off this is not BJM's best album by any standards. But it is good! And for some reason the reviewer just happens to dislike BJM. This is not a reason to bash the album! If 60's revival isn't your thing then send someone who likes it to review it! I see this all the time on pitchfork, someone who hated the band going into to the review and has preconceived notions about how bad they are. But it at least deserves a 7 from an objective standpoint AKA my friend who neither knows nor cares about garage rock. I rest my case.
6) Morrissey for sure. I have a soft spot for Morrissey, possibly because i grew up listening to the Smiths... But despite that and what anybody says I actually find Irish Blood, English Heart to be a good song. Moby however is just not my thing and his most redeemable value (to me) seems to come when he does movie soundtracks. If he would just stick to that I would commend him because they usually fit very nicely. Otherwise nothing for me. As for Momus, he just kinda scares me. I think its his voice but i just can't finger it. His songs are kind of like if Jack Johnson was a pedophile with an unrequited love for synthesizer.

2a) A ratio is the amount of data you've downloaded as compared with your upload. It can be thought of as an actual ratio (i.e., 236:100) or a decimal percentage (i.e. 2.36).
2b) My ratio never got higher than .57, unfortunately. In my defense, this was after only 3 months of membership before OiNK's demise.
3) Oddly enough, most of what are considered the only natively 'American' musical genres originated out of black folk music. These would be Jazz and Blues. Both have of course developed and spawned numerous subgenres in the meantime. Jazz created Funk, Fusion, Soul, and R&B. These in turn created Hip-Hop, Rap, and the like. The Blues led immediately to Rock n' Roll, and from there, virtually the entire canon of western popular music. Outside of the United States,

5) Um, all of them? I mean, seriously. Have you ever read more pretentious reviews in your life? Not that I like Steve Aoki or anything, but they trashed his album in order to shame an entire genre. There are many reasons to not read pitchfork reviews. I would trust AllMusic over them, even.
6) Probably Moby. I figure that I'm going to have to listen to something on repeat for the rest of my life, so why not listen to the album that already sounds like it's on repeat? Plus, if nothing else, maybe it will catalyze me into killing mysellf that much sooner.

Wow, that was messier than I thought. Clearly, the numbering should be:
4. The Apples - Buzzin' Around 5. Kanye West - Graduation
And the last bit of my dissertation on the African-American contribution to western music should have read: "Outside of the United States, the influence is almost greater. The cross-Atlantic back-and-forth of rock music, particularly between 1950 and 1973, was shaped largely by the African-American tradition. Simply, the western canon as we know would not exist without the contributions, influences, and founding from pioneer African-Americans."

7.) http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c399/accmaseedbun/DSC00004.jpg

Difficult question. There is the argument that the origins of Jazz started from the call and response signing of African American slaves. Certainly Jazz is the first original American art form and was for the most part African American. The blues launched a thousand white rock careers.

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers 1. The Firebird Suite 2. DJ Josh Vickers - Squarbian 3. Mozart - Requiem
2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences. A ratio is a value changed over time to inform a person of how much they are downloading and uploading. This is used for many private and public trackers to monitor users who do not seed files as much as they download. This way, removing those users keeps the tracker's torrents healthy with raw contributors who download and seed if their ratio is acceptable. Generally, it is always good to keep a ratio over 1:1.
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum). In the early 1950's, African American music had emerged in America featuring the unique rhythms and beats used in the jazz era. Along with those rhythms, the blues jazz style soon caught its popularity among many throughout the Americas and influences the emotions and events of the time through music. The chord structure and grooves of this new age had impacted the clique of big band to a new alternative. The musicality and stylistic features of the blues through complex time signatures and melodies would always leave its mark in music history through the events and times it captured. Soon the blues would branch on to soul music, greatly used in the churches for gospel, and continues today. Over time, the melodic and dark, melancholy-filled tones of the blues age and its rhythmic sincerity would live on to influence music for generations. As time passed and music progressed, we can view many of those old musical ideas implemented. Today, hip-hop and R&B use many of their beats and grooves tracing from what the African-American musicians have brought back to America starting straight from the early jazz eras.

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum). These things just piss me off anyway so I don't read them enough to remember.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum). Moby. Definitely Moby. Why? Because he will make you contemplate, and explain all the complex feelings you would feel while you are on a desert island. The guy has so many beats he made a gratis for it for independent films, I mean that alone makes me appreciate his music even more. He is the kind of artist that makes you reflect and reflect and reflect, and, that is all I would do on a desert island, so why not. Also, I might listen to Extreme Ways over and over and maybe find something amazing to do with myself for the rest of my life. It would trip my out... would it? Besides, he's the only M I know out of the 3 M's.

Alright.
In Rainbows was the strongest album for me in the past 12 months because after a long hiatus, they brought one of their most catchy sounds to the world that is much different to what they have striven for in the past. Most Radiohead fans would agree that In Rainbows was not their most complex production, but it definitely contains a large selection of varying songs that does not shine poorly upon their reputation. Although Nude was one of the recycled songs used, it was probably for the best timing to fit the album's conception.
One of the most interesting things about the album's release is that Radiohead chose to let their fans choose how much to pay for the album. The release was in VBR format so that their stance upon the whole idea wasn't to be weakly established. This seemed to speak well throughout its remainder in response to all the current file sharing cases throughout the internet, as fans would actually pay for their music for how much they wanted.
In Rainbows is not repetitive. Every melody and beat is fresh as opposed to Tha Carter III. Its musical ideas are clearly expressed throughout the album, staying fresh throughout its entirety. In short, In Rainbows is and remains a strong album because of its composition, its meaning in its sectioned release, and the new sound it brings to all fans. You will not be disappointed.

JAZZ AND THE SOAPBOX
AFRICAN-AMERICANS AND THE MEDIUM AS A MESSAGE
GRAHAM JENKINS
J azz has existed since before the 20th Century. At its inception, a music fit only for the seedy bars and brothels (and blacks) of Storyville in New Orleans, it has been reinterpreted, redefined, and refined, until now it is deified as a constant work of art in motion. But – why do the artists play in the first place? Is it for money? Fame? A ticket out of East Nowhere, Kansas? In truth, one of the grand impetuses behind the very birth of jazz was to send a statement; a political message. Essentially, jazz was invented as a musical soapbox. Now, not everyone has the same take on the genre, as with most art forms. Even the artists themselves disagree as to the particulars of whether their music carries an intentional message or not. The fact remains, however, that jazz is one of the first instances of popular music that conveys some sort of social message. The Harlem Renaissance brought new levels of social awareness to black culture. “Deeming themselves free of the ‘myth’ of the ‘old Negro’ and attuned to the ‘new spirit…awake in the masses,’ participants in the Harlem Renaissance and others sought to define the parameters of black expression, uncover an African-American cultural past, and determine how black culture could be used as a tool for social change.” And a powerful tool it was. Jazz, from the start, was a threat to white society and supremacy. When leftist, Black Nationalist organizations such as Marcus Garvey’s United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and the African Blood Brotherhood (ABB) sponsored and hosted jazz concerts, whites (and some upper-class blacks) began to panic. For the first time, there were Negroes expressing themselves publicly, in a manner that whites could not hope to emulate, and there was little they could do to stop it. Consider the experience of Sonia Sanchez’s father, a jazz drummer and high school teacher in the South: “Her father, a high school teacher in the South, played drums during the summer to support his family. She remembered how one night he risked his life by refusing a drunken white listener's demand that the band dance and play Dixie, illustrating the principle that the act alone of playing jazz was revolutionary during the music's early days.” Another major concern of the white culture oligarchy was the perceived existence of sexual undertones in the music. The very word jazz supposedly derives from the term 'jass,’ which was rude sexual slang, related either to the term "jism" or to the jasmine perfume popular among urban prostitutes. Slowly emerging from the period of Victorian sexual mores, jazz was yet another opportunity for rebellious white youth to mingle with the opposite sex, the opposite race. The traditional stereotype of blacks as some sort of sex-crazed, perpetually aroused animal did not help, either – white parents were afraid their children would be seduced and corrupted by the ‘evil Negroes.’ The reactionary all-white bands were never as innovative and creative as the black jazz orchestras of the 20’s and 30’s. The music establishment, while at the same time trying to downplay the significance of the new genre, put forth such timeless frontmen as Ted Lewis, Eddie Cantor, and Paul Whiteman – the self-proclaimed “King of Jazz.” The first all-white group to desegregate was Benny Goodman’s in the 1930’s, when he hired Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton, and Charlie Christian. Of course, the participation by white artists at all could have proved a drastic setback – “the challenge posed to an exclusively black conception of jazz by white involvement can be viewed as an example of…social dislocation.” It came on the heels of mass desegregation within the nightclubs, bars, and dancehalls. That was one of the first instances of the jazz establishment violated a cultural norm. It was at this time that jazz began to grow outside of the music – “jazz was (also) a business enterprise and a set of institutional relationships, a focal point for political and social debate, a vehicle for individual and communal identity formation, and eventually, an idea.” For the black community, jazz was an expression of solidarity. It tied the working- and middle-classes together, and, sans an over-attachment to a particular style, young and old. The same period saw the advent of ‘race records,’ intended to bolster the credibility and popularity of a given race. Whites had their Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, blacks Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong (and King Oliver and Fletcher Henderson and Cab Calloway and many more besides), and in many ways, it resembled the Jack Johnson v. various ‘Great White Hopes’ of the time. Jazz is often compared to boxing – drummer Max Roach says: “When, where, and how to slip punches is all rhythmic. Setting up somebody is done rhythmically. I know quite a few boxers who make a point of having something to do with a percussion instrument. Sugar Ray Robinson and Johnny Bratton both played the drums. Quite a few fighters got involved with music…” Without even trying, then, jazz was already making some powerful statements as a self-contained movement. But what, then, about the artists making the music? Drummer Philly Joe Jones offers this: “All that kind of music comes from…black weakness. You get black power from black weakness…Black torture, poverty, black slavery…I have a strong feeling that’s the best way to protest, protesting through the music. It’s another way to protest, other than the violent way. All your anger comes out there. All the beauty and everything else come out there. It would be hard to provoke a musician to violence unless it was perpetrated on him, you dig it?”
* * *
I nstrumental pieces are obviously one way to protest. Playing style, boycotts, between-song banter – all of these serve as a form of dissent. Of course, venue choice has much to do with it, too. Whether playing at an anti-war meeting, or a Black Panther rally, they both accomplish the same thing. Plus, if the music is being played for and at something believed in, the playing becomes that much more powerful and poignant. Don Byas, one of the great jazz saxophonists, and who played with such legends as Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, and Dizzy Gillespie, put more of an edge on his tone. As told to Arthur Taylor: “…you will notice I’m always trying to make my sound stronger and more brutal than ever. I shake the walls in the joints I play in. I’m always trying to sound brutal without losing the beauty in order to impress people and wake them up. That’s protest, of course it is.” Nuanced as a solo saxophone or trumpet might be, it cannot match the sheer power of the English language; a power only the human voice can harness. One of the best-known examples of jazz protest, or at least, social awareness, is Billie Holliday’s “Strange Fruit.” The song begins; Southern trees bear a strange fruit, blood on the leaves and blood at the root, black body swinging in the Southern breeze, strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Also covered by Nina Simone, Cassandra Wilson, and a host of others, the song was first performed by Holliday at the Café Society in New York City. She said that, "the first time I sang it, I thought it was a mistake. There wasn't even a patter of applause when I finished. Then a lone person began to clap nervously. Then suddenly everyone was clapping." Nina Simone also appreciated the power of voice. While for some time (the good part of her career, in fact), she “was always interested in love songs,” she gradually began to move more towards songs with a message, reflecting the changing attitudes of her time and people. She has stated, “…the direction I took musically (was) completely relevant to what black people were doing around the world.” Reflecting the general shift towards more purposeful music, and especially jazz music at that, Simone has been a powerful voice for justice and change. “The more black people…asserted themselves, the more I was free to say right on! …I can use my voice as an instrument, a voice to be heard all over the world for what my people need and what we really are about…I think it’s my duty to express in music what they’re feeling, and I’m privileged I can do that.” Obviously, jazz musicians, in no small part, care about their environment and their culture, and see their music as a way to propound that concern. What about the musicians who see it differently? While not as numerous as the proponents, there are many who would like politics to stay out of entertainment altogether. There is a whole subgenre of punditry literature that enjoys berating artists who dare take a stand; the most famous diatribe of all being Laura Ingraham’s Shut Up and Sing. In addition to the notorious conservative talking heads, there are also some jazz artists who would concur. Erroll Garner, a jazz pianist who played with Slam Stewart and Charlie Parker, among others, thought that politics have no place in music. In a 1970 interview with Art Taylor, he said, “I don’t think there’s any way in the world you’re going to express politics through music, for the simple reason that you could wake up tomorrow to a completely different story. You don’t want to get on the bandstand and play morbid…politics is a full-time job. You cannot play and get involved with that.” For some, like Garner, it was a matter of philosophy. Others saw it mostly as an emotional downer, such as saxophonist Johnny Griffin. For him, thinking about that kind of meaning within a song would just bring down the whole piece. He stated, “I’m playing my horn to bring out the positive things in people…actually, if I’m too negative I can’t play… As soon as I start playing, music takes me away from all this b.s. (sic) around me… Music is the thing that saves me.” Even yet, another concern was economic. The increasing hostility towards whites, as the practitioners of the nonviolent movements grew disillusioned, was decidedly not designed to bring in white youths. Saxophonist ‘Lockjaw’ Davis says, “Music has always been the common denominator. The young black militant has overlooked this…There used to be a ratio of fifty or sixty percent white clientele in a colored club. The militant attitude has caused this attendance to drop off considerably…when an individual has to fear for his life to go and hear a jazz artist, he won’t go.” The arguments against speaking out, as a struggling African-American musician, are quite compelling. The truth, though, is that there is that much more courage required to take a stand and attempt to educate the audience. Regardless of how receptive the audience is to any given message, as long as the beat is thumping and the horns are blowing, they are not going to be particularly pleased. This only addresses matters from a first-hand perspective, however. For, if one has not seen an artist before, on what is he to base his opinions? Critics.
T he critic is one of the most often reviled figures in any kind of creative art. The artists view him as incapable of understanding the methodology and effort put into their creations, while the critic sees a bunch of untalented hacks attempting to pass off drivel as art (this is assuming an antagonistic relationship). More often than not, the jazz critics are the fiercest opponent of any sort of non-musical (read: political) influence on the musician’s music. In addition, more often than not, these critics are white. In Frank Kofsky’s Black Music, White Business, he clearly outlines the relationship between business, press, and talent. The first two are white. The last is black. Guess which one gets the short end. As Archie Shepp famously said, “You own the music and we make it.” In the final tally, though, the vast majority of the white critics are incapable of properly analyzing jazz. As Kofsky writes, “The majority of books dealing with jazz, especially those written by white American authors, have not withstood the test of time… For the white author of books about jazz has typically been neither a trained musicologist nor a committed Marxist scholar; more often than not, he has brought little to his writing except quantities of enthusiasms for his favorite artists, plus a few vague efforts at aesthetic pronouncements and musical descriptions, both of which usually lack exactitude and are unrelated to any body of theory about anything.” Repeatedly, white critics criticize that which they do not understand. From the time of Swing as popular music, when Duke Ellington condemned “the critics who had not adequately educated fans about the more artistically inclined bands. Instead, audiences were patronizing the more banal purveyors of the current craze.” As well, as long as jazz was a popular music, or at least one that depended on white patronage, the artists ran the risk of being forever subservient to the whims of whites. “Musicians felt jazz critics were not to be trusted because many were White (sic) and part of the music establishment. Because the revolution in music was against the musical hierarchy, the musicians knew the critics would do everything in their power to defuse the musical revolution.” So is jazz a social movement? The word itself is not. One cannot tell if it is just from listening to it (unless it is a tune like “Strange Fruit”). Over time, though, the music gradually was fused to the Black Power movement by the concerted efforts of a few individuals. After a certain point, “The black artist must construct models which correspond to his own reality. The models must be non-white. Our models must be consistent with a black style, our natural aesthetic styles, and our moral and spiritual styles. In doing so, we will merely be following the natural demands of our culture.” Jazz artists have been consistent, progressive voices for change in this country, and while at times, the white establishment has drowned them out, jazz as a vehicle for uplift, and as a cultural expression of black identity, remain strong to this day. No one can ever predict where the next musical revolution will begin. But the time is ripe for change. Who will be the next Roach? The next Mingus? Only time can tell. What mark did you get for this piece?
― wilter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 04:14 (seventeen years ago)
Well, I go to one of those 'non-traditional' schools where instead of grades, we get 'evaluations.' This is what he wrote on mine:
"Graham's writing is very strong and his conceptualization is often brilliant. Indeed, there are clear signs of genius in his discussion, writing and research. Furthermore, his is a passionate and eloquent voice, with important things to say. His work had great possibilities in both the seminar and his conference research. Indeed, in conference Mr. Jenkins wrote a superb and insightful paper on the degree of political consciousness of jazz artists. "

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers- Pink - Funhouse- High School Musical 3 Senior Year (Forgive me)- Madcon - So Dark The Con Of Man
- A ratio shows the contribution of one member - and the ratio is upload/download - seed/leech. For example, if you upload twice as many files as you download, your ratio would be 2.0. This is to ensure that members are sharing their music, thereby contributing it to other users. You can't always just seed in order to maintain a good ratio - because if there is no leechers then you arent contributing to your ratio.
I wasn't in OiNK.
I dont really know alot on this subject - I guess popular music we know of today such as Modern Rock and Jazz derrive from Blues which are from old country folk songs - originating from the native americans. Then R&B and Hip Hop derrive from Reggae and Funk which were first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960's. Oh well, I tried.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months? 1. AC/DC - Black Ice2. Kaiser Chiefs - Off With Their Heads3. Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night4. Leon Jackson - Right Now5. Katherine Jenkins - Sacred Arias
1979 1. UB40 - (I Can't Help) Falling In Love WIth You2. Gabrielle - Dreams3. Freddie Mercury - Living On My Own (Re-Mix)4. Take That/Lulu - ReLight My Fire5. Mr Blobby - Mr Blobby :D:D
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter. 8.7 isn't fair - I have no more to say on the matter.
I suppose Moby would keep me awake, and it would probably be worse than water torture. So I would choose Morrissey. Reason being Morrissey is alot more relaxing than all of the others. Momus annoys me, I hate the lead singer. Momus would lead me to commit suicide. Morrissey is my choice I could live with it because its relaxing. Moby would keep me awake all the time.

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers- Something Corporate discography- Muse Discography- Against Me! discography
2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.- A ratio is a term used to describe the users activity on a torrent site. Such as how much they download compared to what they have uploaded. A ratio is figured by dividing the amount uploaded by the amount downloaded. It is an effective way to keep track of users to make sure they are making contributions to a site.
Unfortunately, I was not a member of OiNK.
- The influence of African American culture in Western music began in the 19th century with the advent of the blackface minstrelsy, a minstrel show which was a show put on mainly by african americans. With the advent of the minstrel show the, African originated instrument, the banjo became a popular instrument. During the early 20th century there was a great increase in the popularity of African American blues and jazz. During the 70s there was an increase in African American melodic music such as soul, and African American culture lead to the invention of disco. In the 1980's African American pop artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Lionel Richie and Whitney Houston were the most successful of the era. Hip hop spread across the country and diversified. Techno, dance, Miami bass, chicago hip hous, los angeles hardcore and Washington D.C. go go developed during this time. Around 1986 rap took off into the mainstream with Run-D.M.C. Through 1990s and 2000s Hip Hop, Rap and R&B became the most popular genre of music for african americans.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?-hopefully this is supposed to be my opinion.1. Jacks Mannequin - The Glass Passenger.2. Story of the Year - The Black Swan3. Juno original soundtrack4. Jack Johnson - Sleep Through The Static5. Coldplay - Viva La Vida
19881. Metallica - ...And Justice for All2. Slayer - 3. N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton4. Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking5. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum). Radiohead: The Best Of / The Best Of. - 2.0/4.0
I have been a fan of radiohead for as long as I can remember, and for them to get such a low rating is quite insulting. Considering the cd consists of some of their best songs I would believe it would do alot better. Although i'm not sure how "best of" cds compare to their original releases. I still believe the cd should have gotten at least a 7.0, considering lil wayne got an 8.2 or something rediculous. Either way review have never steered me away, or towards music in the past.
Out of the three I would have to choose Momus. The obvious choice would be Moby, but his music doesn't entertain me after a few minutes of listening to it. I chose Momus because his music is... quite bizarre to say the least. And since I would be stuck on an island I would be quite content with his immense library of music. And even though his music is bizarre, it has its own quaint charm. Its kind of addicting. Also... eyepatch.

Imagine you're traveling back in time to early 2005 to visit the guys from Blink 182. What, if anything, do you say to them to convince them not to break up?
Good luck, and we look forward to reviewing your response.

3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).African musical influences such as polyrhythmic music, African oral traditions encouraging the use of music to pass on history, ease suffering and communicate, blue notes, call and response, etc. have influenced the development of Western popular music since the time of slavery. The advent of the blackfaced minstrel show in the 1800s helped assimilate African American music into mainstream society. In the 20th century, technological innovations such as the radio and phonograph led to several forms of American music with roots in the African American community becoming popular overseas and transforming American popular music. Ragtime, jazz, blues and swing became popular in the 20's. Rock and roll, doo wop, soul and R&B developed and became popular with white audiences in the mid 20th century. Later, African American influenced music began to splinter into a myriad of styles such as funk, house, go go, etc. In the latter part of the 20th century, the West Indian tradition of toasting and the American tradition of rhyming slang to put down one's enemies led to the development of rap and hip hop. Hip hop is a prominent multicultural movement in today's culture, and has led to many technical and stylistic innovations in the world of music production.

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).I felt Weezer's red album was unjustly maligned. Rivers has moved back towards the irony and specificity that marked his best lyrics, which I felt was entirely unappreciated in the p4k review. Probably the relatively weak lead off single of Pork and Beans led the p4k reviewer to conclude that this was another lazily written major label cash in in the same vein as Maladroit and Make Believe - but there are some great songs here. My favorites are Troublemaker and The Greatest Man in the World. All in all, it's not as good as blue album or Pinkerton, but it's certainly the best thing they've put out since.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).Morrissey, can I include the Smiths as well? For some people, I think being stranded on a desert island with nothing but Morrissey's music would be sort of miserable, but not for me. I don't think a lot of people pick up on the self deprecating humor and irony in a lot of his best lyrics. I also really love his thoroughly unique singing voice and campy personal, I've been listening to his music for so long it's like listening to an old friend. Morrissey's discography is also very consistent for an artist who's had such a long career. My favorite stuff of his is, of course, the classic early Smiths stuff - especially the singles collection 'Louder Than Bombs'.

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers.1. The Big Come Up (The Black Keys)2. Be – (Common)3. Blue Lines (Massive Attack) 2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences. A ratio is the amount a user uploads divided by the amount they download. The ratio is a good way for trackers to ensure users are actually giving to the community and not just downloading a ton without contributing (leeching). A high ratio, then, is a good indication that a user is performing their loyal duties as a community member.
2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)~1.3 or 1.4
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).African American culture has had a major influence on the development of Western popular music, especially in the 20th century. Originating with old slave songs and oral narratives/traditions, African American music’s origins are evident in early jazz-types, ragtime, and blues music. These music types became popular especially during the 20’s (the Jazz Age). With the popularity of Jazz came the increased mainstreaming of African American culture and minority expression aided by the advent of the radio. These early music types evolved and developed into other genres including soul and R&B. The 50’s and 60’s were high time for these genres, especially among white Americans. In the 70’s, rapping became more and more popular. It built of the previous success of R&B, jazz, soul, blues, and funk, and became popular art forms in the 80’s and 90’s that drew on the influences of African American culture. With the 90’s and today, rap, hip-hop, jazz, and R&B are some of the most popular genres of Western popular music.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?1. Dear Science, (TV on the Radio)2. In Rainbows (Radiohead)3. Rising Down (The Roots)4. Only By The Night (Kings of Leon)5. Feed the Animals (Girl Talk)
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?1. Appetite for Destruction (Guns N’ Roses) 2. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (The Cure)3. Sister (Sonic Youth)4. Rock the House (DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince)5. A Momentary Lapse of Reason (Pink Floyd)
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).Definitely Kings of Leon’s Only by the Night. They gave that album a 3.8 which is a huge slap in the face of a great indie band. I get that the album was a departure from Kings’ earlier stuff but it was definitely cutting edge and revolutionary for their style. “Closer” alone should up this rating to like at least a 6 or a 7 but that’s just from that one song. Others on the album are too good to pass up. Plus, pitchfork is so hit or miss and well “unjust” just sometimes doesn’t describe how much $*#*@ anger you have toward some of their ratings.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).Definitely not Moby because, um, you know, Moby’s just so overdone. He’s definitely appealing when you first listen to him but after Play I thought his stuff went way down hill (though I did see him in concert at DEMF this past summer and he was pretty good). Probably wouldn’t go with momus either because I’m not a fan of his stuff (a little too postmodern for my tastes). So I’d probably go with Morrissey. I’m a huge fan of the Smiths (even if they were before my time) and while his solo stuff isn’t as good it’s not bad. Maybe I could spend all my time convincing him to get back with the Smiths (might be a worthy endeavor). Plus, who wouldn’t want a sly British accent accompanying you on a desert island?

― WAFFLES ADMIN (wilter), Tuesday, 30 December 2008 07:14 (seventeen years ago)
Well In Rainbows is basically a masterpiece (also just for technicalities sake I included it in the 12-month time frame because it only was released on CD in the US in January '08), its kind of the culmination of everything good in The Bends and Kid A, sort of that perfect style of Radiohead that everyone had been itching for but could never get in their previous albums (albeit they were absolutely amazing). Reckoner is by far my favorite song on In Rainbows, easily. When I saw them in concert this past summer they opened with it and their LED light show was just incredible. The song kind of evokes that little bit of cynicism in all of is and Thom Yorke's voice in this song is so eerily soothing. Plus, the simplicity of the beat really emphasizes just how awesome Yorke's voice is in that it achieves a simultaneous melodic and instrumental effect. And that sick part about 3 minutes in where the beat tones down a bit and slowly builds up to the end of the song is a god send of Radiohead bliss.

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackersStars - Sad Robots EP (192 kbps)The Decemberists - The Crane Wife (Demos and Instrumentals) (192 kbps)Laura Gibson - If You Come To Greet Me (FLAC)
2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.A ratio is the ammount you have uploaded divided by the ammount you have downloaded. It's best to mantain at least a 1.00 ratio so that you share as much as you take. More than 1 is always prefered.
2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)Not a member of OiNK.
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).African American music has been prevaliant in western popular music since the abolishment of slavery. Their blues and jazz helped mix with folk music which ended up making America's most unique art form, rock and roll. Their soul music expanded into popular forms of Gospel and R&B. R&B eventually lead to Hip Hop and Rap, which is are some of the most popular types of music in the modern age. The sounds of rap and hip hop, along with advancedments in rock, helped inspire techno and electronica music. Electronica has a big part on some of the indie rock music that has started to become more mainstream as of late. Rap and hip hop which are mainly an african american dominated genre is popular in other parts of the world such as the UK, which has helped spread Western culture overseas. This is similar to what Rock and Roll used to do.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?1. The Decemberists - Always The Bridesmaid2. of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping3. Sigur Rós - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust 4. Margot and the Nuclear So and So's - Not Animal!5. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?1. They Might Be Giants - Flood2. Pixies - Bossanova3. Megadeth - Rust In Peace4. Yo La Tengo - Fakebook5. Sonic Youth - Goo
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).Since it's so fresh in my mind, I will have to say of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping. It's really an album that needs to be heard more than once, and it's really just admirable in such a change of sound it is from Hissing Fauna, without it straying way too far. It's sad that Coldplay can release an album that sounds almost like everything else they've ever released, Viva La Vida (6.5), and score higher than Skeleltal Lamping(5.9). It makes pitchfork appear that all they want is the same thing over and over again, and don't want any type of musical expeirmentation.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).Morrissey. Mainly because I'm quite the fan of The Smiths. And considering he's pretty asexual, I wouldn't have to worry about being rapped in my sleep. Plus, if there are any animals on the island, I'll be the only one to eat them. Although I will have to sit through him constantly singing Meat is Murder because of my meat eating. Looking at his new album cover, he looks pretty strong, which I believe we would need on a deserted island.
7) BONUS REQUIREMENT: Please post a picture of yourself. (HINT: do this.)http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/8836/pb100103ki0.jpg

1) The Skies We Built - EP Stars - In Our Bedroom and After the War Anathallo - Floating World
2a) A ratio is an extremely important thing. It is the amount uploaded divided by the amount downloaded. A user always wants a ratio above 1 because that means that you have shared more than you have taken.
2b) ~1.2
3) African American culture has had an extremely significant impact on popular Western music. This influence began in the nineteenth century with the rise of traditional work songs. The banjo, an instrument of African American origin, helped drive African American culture into mainstream Western music. In the beginning of the twentieth century, Blues and Jazz saw a rise in popularity. The Harlem Renaissance has been credited as an integral part of the development of popular music. In the 60's, vocal superstars such as Dianna Ross and Aretha Franklin rose in fame. Black pop artists such as Michael Jackson and Prince rose to the top artists in the world. In the 80's rap rose in popularity due to albums such as Raising Hell by Run DMC. African American culture has had a significant impact on popular Western music.
4a) 1. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes 2. Atlas Sound - Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel 3. TV on the Radio - Dear Science 4. Deerhunter - Microcastles 5. Fucked Up - The Chemistry of Common Life4b) 1. Rollins Band - Turned On 2. Fugazi - Repeater 3. Social Distortion - Social Distortion 4. The Exploited - The Massacre 5. Helmet - Strap it On
5) Anathallo - Floating World 2.7
The album absolutely deserves a rating above a 2.7. The dynamics they reach certainly deserve some sort of recognition. The vocal melodies between to man and women is something beautiful. I grew up watching this band live and they are definitely talented. Maybe around a six or seven or so would be a better rating. The melodies are worth listening to.
6) I would spend time with Morrissey. I am a big fan of the Smiths. I believe he could lull me to sleep at night with haunting vocals. He is an amazing songwriter and an interesting individual. We could talk about politics and he could find me some great fruit, not meat. I would love to be on an island with Morrissey. http://i462.photobucket.com/albums/qq344/tyjonthomas/Photo5.jpg</a>

I would spend time with Momus. I am a big fan of the Happy Family. I believe he could lull me to sleep at night with lispy, coolly postmodern vocals. He is an amazing songwriter and an interesting individual. We could talk about the racial politics of vending machines and he could find me some great Japanese girls, not fat and boring American ones. I would love to be on an island with Momus.

Wow bro you look exactly like Alex Chilton, is he you dad? (yes, your invite depends on how you answer this question)
http://www.drownedinsound.com/images/13935.jpeg
― aruba (unregistered), Sunday, 11 January 2009 04:52 (seventeen years ago)
If Alex Chilton were my dad he would have taught me to write great pop songs. He would have taught me to play the guitar well. He would have had raised me in New Orleans. He would have introduced me to Richard Lloyd. I have not accomplished any of these things, therefore Alex Chilton is not my dad. I am honored that you think I look like him. Thanks though
― jonlawndale, Sunday, 11 January 2009 05:00 (seventeen years ago)
Wow, if you'd just written, "yeah, he's my dad," I would've practically tossed the invite in your face. But that was a very thoughtful, mature response, and I'll put in a good word for ya to my peeps.
Somehow I imagine Alex as the type of father who'd hand you the deed to his guest house and the keys to his liquor cabinet the day you turned 12, then drive off and never visit you again until you graduated high school. Maybe I'm just an old cynic.

1) Name three shared albums (+192kbps only) that others have successfully downloaded from you on OiNK or other trackers- Something Corporate - Songs for Silent Movies- Opeth - Orchid- Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose
2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.- A ratio is a term used to describe the users activity on a torrent site. The number is based on how much they download compared to how much they upload. A ratio is figured by dividing the amount uploaded by the amount downloaded. It is an effective way to keep track of users to make sure they are making contributions to a site.
Unfortunately, I was not a member of OiNK. I have a 2.98 or so ratio on Demonoid though
- The influence of African American culture in Western music began in the 19th century with the advent of the black face minstrelsy, a minstrel show which was a show put on mainly by african americans. With the advent of the minstrel show the banjo, which was originated by African Americans, became a popular instrument.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?-I hope this was supposed to be my own opinion.1. Jacks Mannequin - The Glass Passenger.2. Story of the Year - The Black Swan3. The Academy Is... - Fast Times at Barrington High4.girl talk - Feed the Animals5. Cold Play - Viva la Vida
19881. Metallica - ...And Justice for All2. Slayer -3. N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton4. Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking5. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
I still believe the cd should have gotten at least a 7.0. Either way review have never steered me away, or towards music in the past.
Out of the three I would have to choose Momus. The obvious choice would be Moby, but after a few minutes of listening it I seem to lose intrest. I chose Momus because his music is... quite bizarre to say the least. And since I would be stuck on an island I would be quite content with his immense library of music. And even though his music is bizarre, it has its own quaint charm. Its kind of addicting. Also... eyepatch.

3)African American culture does a very big influence on Western music. In modern life, there is not much styles of music, who are not from America. And most of American genres are made with Spirichuelce, then Blues and Jazz.As you can see,all of them are African American. These three genres made anothers, like Rock,Hip-Hop and others.I can't forget raggey. It made from Rockstedy(I don't know how to write it in English, sorry =( )that was a very cool,of course. But now I don't know any groops, who play it unfortunately.Reggey made ska,D'n'B and dub,my favourites genres. They are popular in Europe,as like all another African American styles of music
4a) Metallica - Death MagneticBeck - Modern GuiltLil Wayne - Tha Carter IIIFleet Foxes - Fleet FoxesAC/DC - Black Ice
4b) Living Colour - VividLeonard Cohen - I'm Your ManMetallica - ...And Justice for AllEnya - WatermarkBon Jovi - New Jersey
5)Rating of Liz Phair's album is a really an unjust pitchfork.I listened it and liked it a bit. It's not the best release I listened, but it's not worse ofcouse. It can be only an objective opinion of writer if really it can be.I don't know specific of that site6)I like the way of Moby life and his music. He is one of my favourite persons, because he always helps people in need.He spends money from his concerts to charity. He is a vegan,so he doesn't only think about himself. After these arguments,I think You'll understand that of course,I'd like to stay with him.And i really hope thay fans would find him of course and save us from this island=)

Yes, that it true. You have to use Gmail to receive waffles invites or else a private mail service.

African American culture caused jazz & blues in early XX-th century. In 40s - 50s African Americans developed Rock'n'Roll. And then soul in 1950s. In the 60s African Americans created R'n'B, funk. 2a) Explain what a ratio is in three or four sentences.A ratio is everything that someone has uploaded weighed against everything that someone has downloaded. A ratio close to 1 is desirable as seeders are what keep trackers healthy. Low ratios are the problem with trackers like TPB, although some individuals will upload and seed files they download at least until they attain a 1:1 ratio, many will simply hit and run torrents leading to torrents with a few seeders but hundreds of times more lechers. Users with high ratios are the upside of private trackers but maintenance of a high ratio is extremely important to the survival of these private trackers.2b)If you were a member of OiNK, tell us what your ratio was at the time of its closing. (be honest!)Not a Member
3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum). African American Culture, has had a myriad of effects on Western popular music, some individuals may even go so far as to say that African American culture has touched upon every genre of music in Western popular culture. African American culture has had an effect on Western music since the foundation of America with the forced immigration of slaves from Africa. Many forms of traditional American music like blues, jazz, salsa, and rumba derive from African musical traditions. For example, the tradition of blues music came about as a result of the confluence of European instrumentation and African tribal and folk songs. African speech patterns and the use of pentatonic scales led to blues notes in jazz and blues and were adapted to these new genres of music when African-American individuals learned how to play European instruments. Rock and rhythm music has its roots in these older forms of American music, so one could say that African American culture has touched all of these forms of music. Rap also finds its roots in African American culture as centuries before the existence of hip-hop, the griots, or poets, of West Africa were delivering stories rhythmically over drums and sparse instrumentation.
4a) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the last 12 months?1. Animal Collective – My Girls2. Grizzly Bear – Southern Point3. Kings of Leon – Sex on Fire4. Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal5. Flume – Bon Iver
4b) What (in order) are the 5 best releases from the year you were born?1. Uncle Tupelo – Whisky Bottle2. Superchunk – Slack Motherfucker3. Teenage Fanclub – Everything Flows4. Yo La Tengo – Did I Tell You5. Wonderful World – Flaming Lips
5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).I don’t really follow Pitchfork and their reviews of music but I’d have to say that the most unfair rating I’ve seen recently is the review of the Kings of Leon album, Only by the Night. After reading the review, it seemed that Pitchfork was attacking the band and Caleb Followill more than looking analytically at the music. They totally ignored the haunting narrative that the album establishes: the album is named after a line in an Edgar Allan Poe short story and the album follows a mystery woman from a spooky town who took Caleb’s heart and soul and the rest of the album quests to get both back. The entire album is surreal and is a great piece of art, it may not have been the greatest Kings of Leon album but it deserved much better than a 3.8 rating from Pitchfork and they certainly deserve such a scathing review.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).I would definitely choose Morrissey in this case. Although Moby has an extensive catalog of music to choose from, I find that his music is often bland and repetitive. I think I would go crazy if I had to listen to him for the entire time that I was stranded on a desert island. Momus is a great artist and I am a fan of Josef K but I’m not sure that I would want to listen to his unique brand of quirky pop while stranded on an island. Morrissey’s music is also extremely significant and often contains a deep message about the human condition, it would be ripe for analysis on the island. I am also just a fan of the Smiths and Morrissey’s rich voice. Huge fan of Irish Blood, English Heart.

8a) Redo question 4b (hint: ummmm try and get it right this time, bro-heem ;-)

sorry, about the mistake, I didn't look closely enough at the previous successful posts as a guideline.
8.) The songs you described can not be described as releases because they were not independently released but were rather released as parts of albums. For example, Everything flows by Teenage Fanclub would classify as a release because it was released as a single track in 1990 and pressings were made of the track as a single. It would have been much more correct and apt to list albums as opposed to individual songs especially because the artists intended for these songs to be experienced collectively. I believe that in our electronic era, people often pick and choose individual tracks out of works to listen to but they do not consider the artists work as a whole. The artists intend to portray a particular message by grouping these tracks together and focus a lot of attention on the order that they put the music together, individual tracks on an album then are not releases.
8a.)1. In a Priest Driven Ambulance - Flaming Lips2. Bossanova - Pixies3. Twin Infinitives - Royal Trux4. Fakebook - Yo La Tengo5. Nowhere - Ride
8b.)1. Merriweather Post Pavilion - Animal Collective2. Veckatamist - Grizzly Bear3. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes4. A Kid Named Cudi - Kid Cudi - If you haven't heard this mixtape before, don't judge it on the single "Day 'N Nite" I think that song is way too overrated and other tracks on the album are much better. The album has a great narrative and my favorite track is "The Prayer." Hopefully Kanye doesn't destroy this artist..5.Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Sorry it took so long to reply, i didnt see the responses until now. Hopefully my answers are alright now, if I didnt answer what you were looking for... let me know...
― ichow222, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 21:40 (seventeen years ago)
damn "Day 'N Nite" was a total highlight for me... having said that tho, tell me why all my homies are telling me "Merriweather.." owns Fleet Foxes s/t?
― WAFFLES irony/life admin (wilter), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 12:02 (seventeen years ago)
There's no doubt that merriweather is leaps and bounds above fleet foxes s/t. Fleet foxes has managed to put a wonderful spin on traditional folk-type music and has created music that is always engaging. Pecknold's vocals are prefectly complemented by the instrumentation in the album. For example, in the track, "Your Protecter" the usage of a flute in the background only serves to add greater weight to the album. My favorite tracks on this album would have to be "Your Protecter" and "White Winter Hymnal." I have just found that although I love the album, the originality of Animal Collective's album totally blows Fleet Foxes out of the water. Animal Collective on Merrweather, has managed to create a perfect balance between their electrosynth background sounds and the poppy lyrics that Panda belts out. Animal Collective just has a completely unique sound that can not be. Although Animal Collective has mastered their unique sound in this album, i believe the relationship created between tare and panda is amazing as Panda's straightforward melodies are perefectly complemented by Tare's bridges and choruses. I also dont really miss Tare's blurting vocalizations, although it was used as a sort of punctuation, I always thought they were sort of jarring.
You also can't beat the album name. I live quite close to Merriweather Post Pavilion and I have very clear memories of going there when I was younger and I can imagine myself having quite a few similar memories to the band members.

i was the user banned above, i'm just curious as to why I was banned. If it was because for the last question, i did read a pitchfork review for reference and focused on the points that caught me when i listened to the music but I answered every single question I was asked truthfully. Honestly, the only reason that I looked at another review was because I couldn't explain why I liked Merriweather Pavilion more than i liked fleet foxes s/t, i just do. I think plain and simple that the music just sounds better and that it flows a lot better... I cant say that one album has intrinsic merits over the other one, i'm not a professional reviewer and I was just trying to join a valuable sharing community, I would definitely say that my bittorrent and seeding experience as well as my ripping experience would make me a valuable member.

2a) In the BitTorrent world, ratio refers to the amount of data uploaded (or seeded) over the amount of data downloaded. A ratio of 2.0 means that you've seeded twice as much as you've downloaded. A ratio of 0.2 means you've downloaded five times as much as you've seeded. Seeding is what keeps BitTorrent afloat, so maintaining a good ratio is essential.2b) I was not a member of OiNK. My ratio at Torrentech is 1.72.
3) It is almost impossible to think of a popular musical genre where African American culture has not played a central role. Although it's pretty much accepted nowadays that the early blues music laid down by figures like Mamie Smith and Blind Lemon Jefferson eventually (via Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry et al) became the foundation for later pop/rock musicians like the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan, it's still easy to take for granted how thoroughly African American culture is engrained in the popular musical imagination. Look beyond jazz, Motown and the very obvious modern hegemony of Hip Hop/R&B-derived sounds, and you can see its influence on everything from electronic dance music (techno, house and disco were all products of urban black culture) to country and bluegrass (they wouldn't exist without gospel spirituals and the banjo, both of which have Afro-American roots). Call-and-response, the pentatonic scale, and polyrhythm (to name but a few motifs of African American-inspired/derived music) have been and remain key elements of all aspects of popular music.

5) Occasionally I read at the Philip Sherburne and Martin Clark columns on Pitchfork (glad they returned), but I don't read the reviews. In fact, since using a numerical system for judging music (down to the decimal point) is nonsensical at best, I'd say all of them are equally unjust.
6) If I picked Morrissey or Momus, I might actually be tempted to sit and listen to their music rather than devoting all of my energies and efforts to building a giant mirror made out of CDs to signal for help. Moby's not-insignificant cassette tape discography would also allow me to construct a raft with which to drift slowly back to civilization and my lovely music collection.

1) I've never participated in a torrent site like this one before. I've been happy to just use Soulseek, but a friend of mine raved about Waffles, so I'm interested in checking it out. I fully intend to be a valued contributor.
2a) A ratio is "a relationship in degree or number between two similar things." In this case, those "similar things" are a user's uploaded and downloaded data. Ratios exist to ensure that users don't simply log in and take as much as they want without contributing.
2b) Never checked out OiNK, but I'm sure it was great.
3) I'm no expert, but at the very latest, black influence on American popular music began with the blues. It's possible that the spiritual songs of enslaved workers informed earlier musical forms. The blues continues to influence modern pop music, even musicians such as the Velvet Underground (for example) who tried to remove traces of the blues from their sound in order to differentiate themselves. As the century continued on, black musicians participated in most of the major developments in American popular music. (I assume you know what they are!) But black Americans didn't only influence American music; they also influenced music throughout the world. There would be no Mulatu Astatqe without Duke Ellington and his peers, and there would have been no Jimmy Cliff had there not been a Sam Cooke. And those artists have in turn influenced American artists, creating a better world in the process. *cue soaring choir*

6) Moby's music does nothing for me. Momus is a better webboard participant than he is a songwriter. Morrissey on the other hand participated in four great records with the Smiths, and several decent albums as a solo artist. His has an amazing chin. He has a ton of style. Latino dudes and dudettes love him. What's not to like?

2a) A ratio is the result you get if dividing the amount uploaded by the amount downloadedAs in if I'd download 1 GB of Music, I'd need to upload 1 GB to keep it at an even 1.0. If I want say a 3.2 ratio in this particular case you need to upload 3.2, if you dl 2 GB - you need to up 6.4 GB to maintain that ratio. You always strive for ratios better than 1.
2b) 1.3
3) What can I say. African American culture is more or less the root of everything musicwise. You can find relations to everything from today's pop - which's pathway was pawed by the likes ofJames Brown, Smokey Robinson, and the recently passed Michael Jackson. Without these artists, music such as Justin, Britney (Not that that'd sadden me the least) - or any kind of Hip-Hop - Would never have been able to be accepted and reach the masses. The black going into white people's music I'd say began with Elvis, who's biggest influence was the Blues, which was up until then, only for blacks. But gained respect in the white crowd, with the rise of Elvis.
4a)
Has to be albums or are singles + eps in the competition?

w singles and EPs included:
1. kent - Töntarna2. Glasvegas - A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss)3. Muse - The Resistance4. Mew - No more stories...5. Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plague Lovers (Remixes) (EP)

hard...
1. Michael Jackson - Off The Wall2. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures3. The Clash - London Calling4. Queen - Live Killers - my favourite live album from them without any competition.5. Pink Floyd - The Wall
5) I'll have to go quite recent.
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13453-the-resistance/
Muse - The Resistance was given a meager 5.9 / 10
Why, because they out of some obscure reason despised everything muse did since Origin of Symmetry...
"So let's take the warm fuzzy bigness of the music at face value. It's understandable if the Buckley mannerisms and Mercury multi-tracking on "The United States of Eurasia" aren't your cup of tea. You may cringe at the Pavlov-approved crescendos that surge through "Guiding Light", the sort of thing where you imagine a ProTools preset producers have nicknamed "10,000 People Holding up Bics They Bought Especially for the Concert." And then there's "Exogenesis", the aforementioned "Symphony" in three parts. Now a Daydream Nation style knowing "trilogy" this is not. There's massed strings. There's half-time chest-beating theatrics ready for flashpots and Vegas set design. If it's not quite Keith Emerson's territory-- or Celine Dion's, for that matter-- it's a similarly grandiose ballpark where the fans wear slightly different clothes. [
And a music enjoyer's reply to this garbage:
Muse are stadium arena rock at its best. With influences such as Freddie Mercury, paired with the intenseness of Matt's voice, how can you fail? Sure it may be very much inspired by Bohemian Rhapsody - but in a worthy groovy kind of setup and performance. And I'm sorry Bitchfork, but who on this earth with anything close to a brain, and well possibly cleaned out ears would consider Jeff Buckley a bad influence?
Matt's greatest hero is the classical music composer - and moreso performer - Rachmaninov - and - all hail Rock Music - but would it have existed without the likes of Mozart and beethoven practising their pianos day and night - and - making musical love to them - later inspiring Great Balls of Fire, from a certain Jerry Lee Lewis. The Energy Prevails, through both Guiding Light - and the 3 part symphony that kicks the shit out of any album's ending till this day, bringing back memories of Jerry Lee hammering on Rachmaninovs piano, leaving sweat marks on the first and last sets of keys - after dancing on the black and whites to the heartbeats of Uprising. This is the album everyone dreams of getting to create.
6) Easy. Morrissey. I've grown up with his music, crying and sweating to "The last of the famous international playboys" - Mr. Steven Patrick Morrissey.Momus's music says nothing to me so I'll leave that at that. Moby gave me a veeery short dancefloor craze in the 90's - but despite being a anti-animaleater, like Morrissey, I don't think he'd give anything even close to satisfying my musical hunger nor my internal lack but lustful need for Teenage Angst poetry. Supplied better than by noone other than Morrissey. All the way from wanting to die as a teenager just from boredom, and molding the likes of Manic Street Preachers, esp Richey. - toliving in America, while doing a song on how much better England and Ireland are - in an amusing and very sarcastic expression - Only Morrissey can walk that mile.

jooeyman, buddy, have you ever heard of Frank Hutchison? Darby & Tarlton? Dock Boggs? Your knowledge of early American pop music seems to be woefully undeveloped, and that just won't fly on Waffles. Tell ya what, if you write me an essay (6 sentences minimum)(HINT: do at least 8 sentences) on the early history of white country blues, I'll pretend you never made such an ignorant fool of yourself, and you might have a fighting chance of joining the Waffles community just in time for Hallowaffleen. Deal?
― Waffles Admin (unregistered), Saturday, 17 October 2009 13:02 (sixteen years ago)
I'll give it a shot, here goes:
In the 1960's the greatness of the blues, was discovered by white American and European musicians.Quite a few of these blues-inspired bands became legends. Many of these are well-renowned and known to many still today.Bands such as The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Canned Heat, Cream and The Yardbirds made the blues appeal to young white audiences, something that black blues artists had yet not been able to do in America. With the exception of white crossover covers of black rhythm and blues songs. Such as Frank Hutchison - already recording in the early 1920's - and thus considered the first white man to record the blues. Soon to be followed by Darby & Tarlton - who with their songs "Birmingham Jail" and "Columbus Stockade Blues", coupled on one record, managed to sell more than 200 000 copies.
Rock has since the 1960's undergone several quite a few blues revivals. For example Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and even Eddie Van Halen - are inspired by the blues - and used it as a foundation for their own offshoot styles. With this inspiriring generations to listen to as well as to play the blues.

3) Briefly summarize the influence of African American culture on Western popular music (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum). The whole start to jazz, which brought along things such as soul was started by African Americans. That with the help of things like Motown got swirled into popular music, and started becoming interracial. Another influence it has was the birth of hip hop from soul, which is a major factor in pop music, and today where it has transformed to rap. Without African American culture we would not have half the music we have today.

5) What is the most unjust pitchfork numerical rating? Why? (five sentence minimum).I think girls was the most unjust rating at 9.1. The simple indie pop tunes, and standard vocals brought nothing to the table. Sure, it was an okay album, but for it to score that high on such an egotistical scale is dumb. I can't stand girls album's pop tunes for more than 4 minutes. I hope pitchfork would wise up about their idiotic rating scale.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? Meat is murder and The Queen is Dead are both pure gold, so i would always choose Morrissey, despite his rocky solo career in my opinion. Moby might have been an interesting choice though..
