The CINDERELLA Cleveland Indians thread!

Not only do the Tribe have 13 games left against Minnesota, but in the last 3 weeks they play KC and Detroit a total of 12 times.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

CLEVELAND ROCKS! CLEVELAND ROCKS!

If they can get merely adequate pitching for the last 50ish games, they'll take the division. Victor Martinez makes me swoooooooon. And that was BEFORE I knew he was a switch-hitter!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

At this stage, I'd rather have the Indians win the Central than the Twins, but I don't think it's gonna happen. Despite their recent struggles, the Twins still have that whole aura of just-watch-us-pull-this-game-from-out-of-our-asses, while the Indians are just a decent ballclub.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Also unfortunate (for the Indians):

- Johan Santana & Brad Radke & Joe Nathan (& Juan Rincon & Grant Balfour, too!)
- heave-hoing Minky for Justin Morneau

However, on the plus side (for the Indians):

- Luis Rivas & Christian Guzman are still playing every day
- Kyle Loshe & Loshe-in-training Carlos Silva
- subpar production from the OF (outside of Lewwwwwwww) & 3B
- Joe Mauer's knee problems (& the chum starting @ C in his stead)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I (personally) would not be so quick putting Carlos Silva on the Indians side...

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

His stats looked eerily similar to Loshe's, outside of ERA...

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

That last series against the White Sox left me emotionally exhausted.

I think I'm going to the Twins game Friday.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Aaron Boone going to be able to play this year? There was some talk around the break like he would be back before the end of the season.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably, but it sounds like it will be late in the season:

Setback:

Trainer Lonnie Soloff said Aaron Boone's rehabilitation assignment has been pushed back for at least two weeks because of the swelling he had in his left knee during workouts at the start of this 11-game trip.

The minor-league season ends after the first week of September, which may limit Boone's ability to test his knee in game conditions.

"At this point, he will play this year," Soloff said.

Normal recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the knee takes six to seven months. Boone is 5½ months removed from his surgery.

"When I go out on rehab, I want to be sure my knee is ready," he said.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 August 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

If they ever call Josh Bard back up from the minors they'll have TWO switch hitting catchers. Think of the possibilities.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think BP is breaking down the AL Wild Card by strength of schedule today. It will be interesting to see how the Indians match up the rest of the way.

"Starter/4th outfielder," BP wrote. Because he's small, fast, doesn't draw walks to exploit the speed well, and has almost no power. I can see that passing on the '04-13 Senators.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 20 June 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Nine in a row, and they're still 8 games back of the ChiSox?!?! Aarrrrrgh. No offense to the vocal (and passionate) pro-Sox faction on ILBB, but GO TRIBE! V-Mart is slowly coming around, Grady Sizemore has been a superstar the past month+ (percentile-wise), and looky looky the Indians have themselves a mighty fine pitching staff! CC + the NEW Cliff Lee + a healthy Milwood + an improved Westbrook + the best bullpen in the AL? Nice!

You know, I'm starting to think that the strongest division in the AL is the Central. And I think I'm one of the few folks to finally come around to that notion.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 June 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

I watched the Sox play the Dodgers Saturday on satellite. I was in horror.

If we've only gained a game and a half after winning nine in a row I fear for my sanity.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Laurence, fear not! The Sox are lucking out all over the place (cf. two come-from-behind wins their last 2 games, as much a testament to the decrepitude of the Dodgers as it is the resilience of the Harrelson HeGones), they're not getting much production aside from the average-laden Podsednik, Konerko's big bopping, Iguchi's steadiness, and a brief howdy from the Big Hurt (tho Dye's outburst of late helps) (as does Carl's OBP-free slugging) (team OBP of 324!), and their pitching is prime for a blowout (low K-rate guys all over the rotation - their BABIP must be ridiculously low - and a bullpen dependent on continued excellence from Dustin Hermanson) (Cliff Politte is probably the team's unsung hero, and not because of his 4 bullpen wins). Their team ERA is FOURTH in the majors, as opposed to their middling team BA, OBP, SLG, runs scored, etc. If their pitching becomes average, the team's gonna skid.

That said, it'd take one helluva collapse for either the Twins or Indians to get within pissing distance of first place. Being 23 games over .500 is a nice place to be in late June.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I picked up Sizemore on WAIVERS in the ILB league. It's the only good move I've made all season.

I thought about this one last night when Peter Gammons made a big deal that the Indians have something like 30 games in the second half against Tampa, KC and Seatlle.

I hope things don't get ugly like they did last year.

Any AL playoff configuration that has both the Indians & the A's in there is A-OK by me. Of course, the Indians & A's are squaring off this week, while the Angels visit Ichiro (w/out running into King Felix; boo!) & the White Sox get to play T-ball against the Royals.

The Tribe are going to thw World Series.

I wouldn't bet against it because they appear to have fewer weaknesses than any of the other contenders. But I'll hold my tongue and reserve proper praise until they play an important series against a club that needs to win, i.e. starting this Monday against Chicago. In the last month they've played a bunch of crap teams, and their only opponents with something to play for were Oakland (very even matchup), Chicago (lost a four game sweep in July) and Minnesota (a contender in the loosest sense of the word).

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 22 September 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

(Sorry, Hafner had 4 HR in the series. Perhaps I should have been working at work.)

weather1ngda1eson (Brian), Thursday, 22 September 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Jeez, if Elarton's performance lately isn't a sign of Destiny...

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 23 September 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

PROJECT DONKEY!?!?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 September 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

That's the straight-to-video sequel to OPERATION: DUMBO DROP, I hope?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 September 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Hafner was a project who looked like a donkey.

I will rename him OPERUMBOROP after OPERATION DUMBO DROP.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 23 September 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

OMG x-post!!11!!1

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 23 September 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Aaron Boone's batting average just went over .250 for the first time this season, it doesn't sound like much, but he was still under .200 well into July.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 23 September 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Also fun - look @ V-Mart's numbers (BA / OBP / SLG):

April - .207 / .290 / .329
May - .213 / .268 / .333
June - .295 / .384 / .516
July - .323 / .400 / .516
August - .402 / .450 / .608
September - .343 / .420 / .429 ("SLUMP" OH NO)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 September 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

AT HOME!!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 September 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

whew, I'm glad I STARTED CASEY FOSSUM ON MY FANTASY TEAM.

I was looking at all the playoff combos today in the paper and if the Red Sox win two aginst the Yanks and the Indians win two against the Pale Hose then the Red Sox and Yanks play a one game playoff for the the division title with the loser playing a one game playoff against the Indians. So much madness.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 30 September 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Ben Broussard: piece of crap. Went down on 3 pitches w/ the bases loaded in the 11th, and with the game on the line, swings at the very first pitch to pop up to shortstop. SO LAME. Also: Wedge PULL YOUR RELIEVER HOW ABOUT IT?

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 1 October 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

So Cleveland bashes the absolute shit out of the White Sox regulars down the stretch, and then loses in 13 innings to their "B" squad? Very bizarre.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Saturday, 1 October 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I went to Friday's game. Tribe could've won three different times with one out and a guy at third and never got him home.

Goodbye Blake, Broussard and Boone.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 3 October 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

B-BALL'Z BOTTOM B'Z BLUBBER etc.

Tribe 7-for-56 (.125) with runners in scoring position in the final seven games. I did myself a favor and slept through it Sunday.

weather1ngda1eson (Brian), Monday, 3 October 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
Worst fundamental team ever.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Peralta warmed up a little bit last weekend, but when your #3 hitter is .250/.333/.381 there's gonna be some offensive struggles.*

*I think he got dropped down to #7 and then benched for a few games at one point.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 June 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, they benched him for three days and now he's hitting a little better now. They just gave Jason Johnson to the Red Sox- Johnson was supposed to be a big offseason move to replace Elarton and now they're just ditching his salary.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 22 June 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

eleven months pass...
