MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

So who is everyone again (just out of curiousity--obv I'm not playing)?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

My team (JUICE BY JOSE!) homers like it's going out of style. And fields in a similar fashion. I now have 6 starting pitchers, and no closers. Tops (or near) in ERA, WHIP, K/9, HR, RBIs, and BBs. Bottoms (or just about) in AVG, FIELDING PERCENTAGE (sassafrass), SBs and hitter's Ks. Phear me.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Also, as usual, I almost shot my moves load before the All Star break.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 July 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

So basically you are fielding the Yankees. ;)

1st half review: Zito-Bonds Namesakes

Going into the season, this looked like a good-hitting team with a shaky pitching staff. The opposite has been true.

After dominating the first month (it seems like a lifetime away), the non-hitting of draft busts Todd Helton and Mike Lowell finally caught up to the ZBN's, as the team's huge lead in the standings dwindled in late April and early May in what is now known as the "Passover Swoon".

The pitching staff, led by the healthy and dominant Roy Halladay, kept the ZBN's from oblivion while a rash of injuries and suckiness sunk their hitting stats into the lowest echelon of the league. Brandon Webb, Freddy Garcia, and a bevy of short relievers led by Luis Ayala provided steady and occasionally excellent pitching, turning the ZBN's into one of the league's best five or six pitching staffs.

Decimated by injuries (with four regulars on the DL plus a couple more playing day-to-day with nagging health problems), the hitting-desperate ZBN's pulled off one of the biggest blockbuster trades of the year, sending #2 pitcher Freddy Garcia to the $800 Boys for OF Johnny Damon. Damon has been excellent (hitting in every game he has played with the team thus far), and with the returning Jose Vidro, Ramon Hernandez, along with the suddenly resurgent Todd Helton, the hitting looked to be getting back on track -- finally.

But no sooner did the team appear to be healthy again, when it was hit with two pieces of bad news -- the possibility of arm surgery for SS Orlando Cabrera, and a broken leg for staff ace Roy Halladay FUCK FUCK FUCK I IZ FUCKED WHAT THE FUCK AM I GOING TO DO NOW JESUS FUCK, putting him out for 4-6 weeks. It appears that nothing comes easy to the ZBN's (outside of one glorious month of April) and they'll have their work cut out for them in the 2nd half.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

I've overmanaged somewhat, by pulling the trigger a couple of times too early and a couple of times too late. I had both Willie Taveras and Felipe Lopez early on in the season and let them go too fast. I'm doing as well as could be expected however considering three of my first six picks (Chipper, Thome and Oliver Perez) have added up to a negative influence on my stats.

Leaving that dunce Mark Bellhorn in the lineup for two months was stupid stupid stupid, as he doesn't do anything but strikeout and get a few walks, which do not lead to runs. I know some questioned my trading Morneau AND Bellhorn for Renteria. The trade is some what of a push, but my hope was that he would PLAY Bellhorn and pick up some of those K's. A negative for someone else is a positive for me, no? Morneau might bust out, but he might not, we will see.

I'm kind of screwed in trying to gain points, unless my hitting goes on a tear, which with the likes of Jason Lane, Brad Hawpe, Aaron Boone, Jason Werth and Eric Byrnes to pull you out of the fire, you are going to get burned. My pitching is wacked out as I am near the top in IP, wins and K's but I am at the bottom for HRs allowed, BBs, and HBP. I needed to pick up a second closer and setup man in the draft and not be so heavy on starting pitching, but what can you do.

Even with a trip to the DL for a couple of weeks, K Rod and Scot Sheilds have both worked out so far.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 11 July 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

The trade is some what of a push, but my hope was that he would PLAY Bellhorn and pick up some of those K's.

Hahah you jerk.

Leeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 11 July 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

I was crippled by an unbalanced draft. Nathan was a great pick, but I didn't pick a starter till the 9th round, and my next starter was at round 15 (remember, my 14th pick and on are all dearly departed).

Unsurprisingly, I'm picking up the caboose in steals, and again in the bottom half in HRs, but otherwise I've been hitting decently in my usual stats (AVG, H, OBP). And my bullpen has been solid, but the extreme weakness is again my rotation with my 3 closers (two off the scrap heap, natch) and 2 setup guys. Only solid starter is Dontrelle, and I keep forgetting to start guys who put up 8IP, 3H, 1ER, 6K. And John Patterson, of the 2.91 ERA, has 3 wins in 15 starts.

I've dropped a too many people who've been productive (HELLO CREDE).

Leeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

I've screwed my team over. I better Beane it and get rid of some of my big boys, except for Abreu.* Offers to be fielded.

*Better check Yard Work.

Does everyone who has posted on this thread look like they're kidding?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 05:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm using the All-Star Break to catch up on my macrame.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

"again"

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Although I just lost Drew, who was on a tear, I'm still optimistic about the second half. Berkman and Jenkins have improved over the last month and I can deal with only 3 starters when it's Martinez/Morris/Bedard. The Lightfoot cup is as good as mine!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I was only six points behind you a couple of days ago -- don't start singing "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" just yet!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

This Lightfood Cup looks like the only thing I could be in contention for this year. Can I get honorary Canadian citizenship? I have a Sarah McLachlan CD!

Leeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Believe it or not, that doesn't really help!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Wait... Lightfood? *tears up application*

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

how about a collection of glass tiger memorabilia?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, dude, anybody living south of the Mason-Dixon line is automatically prohibited from participating. However, non-Californian, non-Jesusland Americans are encouraged to apply. With your application, please include:

1) one 500-word essay about your favourite three Mitsou videos
2) who hit the wind-blown bases-clearing triple off Dave Stieb in Game 7 of the 1985 ALCS, effectively costing the Jays their first trip to the World Series?
3) a Plato-style dialogue featuring at least five major characters, dissecting one of the following discussion topics:

a) Gord Ash: Classic or Dud?
b) T/S: 1993 Blue Jays vs 1994 Expos
c) Defend the Indefensible: trading Michael Young for Esteban Loiaza

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

OMG they flipped Michael Young for Loaiza?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Yep, Darwin Cubillan + Michael Young for Esteban Loiaza, July 2000.
In fact, Izturis, Young, and Felipe Lopez are all All-Stars this year and all of them came up in the Blue Jays organization. Meanwhile, we haven't had a great shortstop since Tony Fernandez (although current SS Russ Adams is a rookie and has played well thus far).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Did you know:

Seattle traded Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek for Boston's Heathcliff Slocumb?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I'd forgotten that Lowe and Veritek were involved, but I do remember the trade. Seattle's bullpen was a mess that year (kind of like Boston's this year), but still, that deal was heartily ridiculed at the time.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

THIS TIME IT COUNTS...

Holy shit! Set your rosters! The All-star game stats count this year!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Shit, should I start Carpenter in my other league?

wtf? (bnw), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

i would like to say for the record that i did not propose that trade, and i would fully understand should it get shut down. i was assuming that blount was offering trades like that to everyone.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

haha, i intially thought blount was bailing on the league so i locked him, but then i figured everyone would probably veto that trade anyway so i unlocked him. but seriously blount, no hard feelings but i can't justify trades like that.

HOWEVER if the trade somehow DOES go through, i will reedit yours and yanc3y's lineups back to they were pre-trade and lock you out.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

OH YEAH AUSTIN KEARNS IS BACK LIKE BACKSTREET

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

My hitting has been teh suck over the last week or so, and today's game results kinda encapsulate this:

C R. Hernández (SD - C) C @Phi L, 5-1
1B T. Helton (Col - 1B) 1B @Pit L, 3-0
2B J. Vidro (Was - 2B) 2B Hou L, 4-1
3B A. Hill (Tor - 3B) 3B @KC L, 6-5
SS O. Cabrera (LAA - SS) SS NYY L, 4-1
OF T. Hunter (Min - OF) OF @Det L, 5-2
OF J. Damon (Bos - OF) OF @CWS L, 6-4
OF J. Edmonds (StL - OF) OF ChC L, 8-4
Util M. Lowell (Fla - 3B) Util @SF W, 4-1
BN B. Schneider (Was - C) BN Hou L, 4-1
BN R. Klesko (SD - 1B,OF) BN @Phi L, 5-1
DL M. Holliday (Col - OF) DL @Pit L, 3-0

All losses except for one (Lowell went 0-3, 1BB in a winning effort), with hardly any scoring (re: fantasy benefit) in those losses. My players aren't hitting and neither are their teams. Sad.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 25 July 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

So does everyone in Fantasy leagues just go crazy stocking up on Rangers and Rockies players?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 25 July 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

I think my entire lineup has been amassing a collective 950 OPS for the past month+, so I say: they're probably grabbing Reds, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 July 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 25 July 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 25 July 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

more from the files of It All Balances Out:

as i move into 2nd place (just a half-point out of 1st!) of 20 in the iLBB league, my other team drops 8 points to land at 14th of 15.

the leglo (the leglo), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

even steven!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

COMMISSIONER NOTE:

Dyson, is there any particular reason why you're hoarding batters and avoiding pitching? I'm just pointing out that you are projecting less than -250 in IP for the league which isn't necessarily fair.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

gygax - I've emailed you.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

There are quite a bit of managers competing on a minimal pitching staff, and bulking up on offensive players. There is no official way to police this or judge what is "fair" or "unfair".

Perhaps next year there will be minimums/maximums applied to the amount of positional players/pitchers you can field at any given time.

In other news, I just dropped my #4 pick in the draft, Mr. Bret Boone. Have a go at him, if you dare.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Aw, commish, I don't see anything wrong w/ dyson's strategy¡ He's projected to have about 80 more IP than me, but he's still got 3 more wins than my whole staff¡

Leeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

No, there's nothing wrong with the strategy (per se). But next year, it will be hopefully enforced via minimums/maximums that fantasy teams will be managed more similarly to MLB teams in terms of ratio of position players vs. pitchers.

Perhaps more of a balance between positive and negative stats will be required as well.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

Some categories would have to go ... if every team compiles near the same # of innings, then K and K/9IP become basically the same thing, so one of them is no longer needed. The same logic applies to BB and K/BB.

Also, we could require a minimum number of starters so that the # of starts is around the same for everyone in the league, instead of the # of innings. In that case, we could continue using the same categories.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

BARRY YOU IDEA STEALER!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

BIG HUGS!!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

fwiw, i think these are silly ideas. it's called "fantasy" baseball for a reason, no?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

just a word of warning, i moved into first place last night in ilBB without moving into last place in my other league. watch out for planets falling out of the sky, flying pigs, etc.

the leglo (the leglo), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

also, while i like the idea of managing the fantasy teams being as similar as reasonably possible to managing a mlb team, i find the 'alternative strategies' to have an almost moneyball-esque quality (valuing something the market undervalues), which is pretty amusing.

the leglo (the leglo), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

My team can be anyone's team in a Home Run Derby. That is all. Also, FU to Chad Bradford for his yeoman's effort yesterday in making Clement's start as shitty as possible (as if getting clocked on the noodle isn't shit enough).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

do you have dunn, as well? austin kearns was an inspired pickup, given jbj's offensive numbers...i mean, he's like emblematic and shit.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

What's this I hear? Torii Hunter taken off the field with an ankle injury? On the same day that I trade away my extra outfielder? Sure, why not?

It's official: Mike Lowell is my only starter to avoid injury this year. And he sucks.

Todd Helton and Orlando Cabrera, both of whom never get hurt, got hurt. But somehow, Ryan Klesko has avoided injury. WTF is going on here?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 29 July 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Ryan Klesko, man! What'd I tell ya!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 29 July 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

The new team name is a play on a Tim Hecker album title -- "Hurt Me, Do It Again".

I was optimistic going into the break -- my bats were waking up, a bunch of guys were coming off the DL, and I felt I could make a run. Now, everybody who wasn't on the DL before is injured now. Stick a fork in me.

This shit is comical ... I had five outfielders (once Matt Holliday came off the DL), so I traded Holliday, and on that very day, Torii Hunter got injured and Todd Helton went from day-to-day to the DL (therefore, Klesko moves to first). Net tally: I went from five OF's to two OF's in one day.

Also, FUCK YOU YAHOO for not moving Ramon Hernandez to the DL yesterday. Because of that, I couldn't pick up Jay Payton until this morning, meaning he doesn't get in my lineup until tomorrow, meaning I missed out on his grand salami and five ribbies today.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 30 July 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Why move Hernandez to the DL when he is out for the season.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Wait a sec - jhq, who's jbj?

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 31 July 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Both Hernandez and Hunter might be able to return in September, so I haven't decided what to do with them yet. Hernandez was ably replaced by Brian Schneider in my lineup during his first stint on the DL, whereas Hunter won't be replaced so easily. Halladay and Helton hopefully won't be out much longer, so I'll have the DL space.

However, It looks like Vidro might be injured again, bringing my DL tally to five. Welcome back Jose, you know where to sit. Too bad I didn't find out about your injury in time to get Orlando Cabrera's three hits and three SB's from my bench into the lineup.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 31 July 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Barry, I have surplus of 2B guys! Make me an offer I can't etc.

Leeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 1 August 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

david: jbj was my acronym for your team's name. i simply meant that kearns' own numbers seem to be a sort of microcosm of your team's offensive numbers.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 1 August 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Ahhhhhhh. Actually, I kinda wish his numbers were my team's numbers, at least on the average tip.

Anyhoo, my boys got 15 RBIs and 14 hits yesterday - I think I have a 30 or 40 RBI lead, but you can never be too careful. (Also, 2 SBs! Almost out of 2nd-to-last!)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 August 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

i don't understand the scoring, still.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

one point for each team in the league per category. the points are basically daily rankings in each category except you get points based on your ranking.

Rookie debuts take a game (or a few?) before the player becomes eligible.

Leee, no offense, but Todd Walker is NOT an acceptable trade for Bobby Abreu.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Weeks' debut was actually in 2003.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh, but they're chumpzillas. Freel's a punk bitch that hates foreigners, and Grudz is on DA JUICE. You did the right thing (even if it turned out not-right).

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 August 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=fanball-pickupoftheweekfelix&prov=fanball&type=lgns

he's still only 19!

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7487
he looks way goofier than i remembered from the futures game a couple years ago.

he mixed in a couple curves w/ a bevy of high-90s fastballs, and they were something to behold. 84 mph with sharp downward break, and he's apparently got a wicked change and a top-secret slider ("some scouts say it's his best pitch") that he's not even allowed to throw. i just hope he stays healthy.

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Well the first 4 hitters he faced all got on base (2 singles, 2 walks).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah but still only one earned run so far (courtesy of countryman magglio ordonez), a few k's

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

final line: 5IP 3H 2R 1ER 2BB 4K

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Not bad if you discount that nervous energy/adrenaline for the first 4 batters.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's 4 innings of 1 hit ball! i hope they keep him up the rest of the year.

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

what the hell else are they gonna do?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Play Pat Borders!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I wish someone on my team would go on the DL!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Saturday, 6 August 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

That can be arranged.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 6 August 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

What the hell? Even the free agents that I'm picking up to fill in for my injured players are getting injured! This has happened three times in the past week!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

what else they would do = shut him down for precautionary reasons, or send him down to keep major league time off his arb clock (tho i'm not sure how that works)

F. Hernandez (W, 1-1) 8.0 5 0 0 0 6 0

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

He's looked good against the Twins/Tigers (a combined 18.5 games out of the ALWC), but assuming pitching every 5th day, his schedule looks like:

Angels
Twins
Rangers (in Arlington)
Yankees
Angels
Oakland
etc.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

BLOUNT AND LEEEEE

YOU HAVE TRADES!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

KIBOSH!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

BASTARD!

COUNTER!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

(meaning I want you to counter, as I can't from work)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

http://magiccards.info/scans/en/jr/5.jpg

(I'll try to get to it tonight, I have work too now, sorta.)

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Trade deadline is tomorrow!

I recently sent out some trade-related emails as well as a couple of trade offers ... talk to me, yo.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 13 August 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

anybody on my team is available, make a veto-proof offer.

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 13 August 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

blount, you trade slut!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 15 August 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

Eckstein for Jones! White hustle for white pride!

BTW, how stoked am I that Juice! "fantasy stud" Matt Clement had his awful start yesterday washed away by Ye Olde Fantasy Goddes?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Also, I am going to prove that saves ain't shit, as I will undoubtedly sweep most hitting AND pitching categories because y'all are suckapunks. And I will still finish out of the top spot because of (wait for it) FIELDING PERCENTAGE. (And maybe hitters' Ks.)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

And SAVES!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 15 August 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

well, not to sound like a schmuck or anything, but i think this is now my 3rd year in a board-related fbbl and it's the first time i've finished out of the bottom 5, so i don't really care about not finishing first. comfortably top ten is cool w/ me.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 15 August 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Saves are for Elias Sports Bureau gophers.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Batting average is for Scott Podsednik.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

And fielding percentage is for ... um ... the A's? Damn!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

And TWINS!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

HR's and RBI's are for the MVP voters.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

why don't you guys saber it up a bit? i might do something like this sometime, if the scoring system wasn't so fucking confusing & counterintuitive.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Talk to the commish, John.

And talk to the SLUGGING PERCENTAGE 2nd-runner-up, MIR!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

well i'm not trying to upheave yr system or anything, i just don't get why so many saberfriendly guys (obv incl gax) would be content to play in a system that counts stolen bases and home runs the same or whatever. (and yeah i know you guys don't actually do that)

John (jdahlem), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Because we're desperate for The Fix.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

I was hoping this year to get more SABR friendly stats but as is, this is about as representative as I thought it to be of actual baseball tools.

Initially I felt the first ILX fantasy league was to be a blend of traditional 5x5 with the more SABR-minded stats available but we have to make do with what yahoo! offers.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

(sidequery: is yahoo! fucked for anyone else right now?)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 15 August 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

They're taking tonight off, it seems. Too bad, as I wanted to see Brett Myers pitch BP to the Sens.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 15 August 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

also note: the SAVES LEADER also happens to be in FIRST PLACE

the leglo (the leglo), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

randy winn hit for the cycle and all i got was a lousy point

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Please also note that saves are for Elias Sports Bureau gophers. It's a fact!

(Yay Jhonny Peralta!)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

Only 9 of the 21 players I drafted are left on my team ... including just 5 out of the top 10.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh, yeah - I think I only have 7 original draftees:

Victor Martinez
Adam Dunn
Troy Glaus
Carlos Beltran (YOU BASTARD)
Brett Myers
Matt Clement
Kelvim Escobar

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

i got 10.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

12 for me (not counting Craig "DL hog" Wilson) and 8 of my top 10 - not bad!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

10. Yet I am, how you say, NAWK NAWK NAWKIN ON HEAVEN'S DO-WAH.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Clearly, saves, wholesale team revamping, and MUELLER is the way to go.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

HI DERE.

The View from Second Place (Leee), Thursday, 18 August 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

How many of us have picked up Rob Makowiak at some point this season? If he's not the slut of the league this year, then I don't know who is.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Watch out LEEEE!!! Don't look behind you!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

neifi!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Also, my #4 pick is no longer in MLB, and not due to injury. I don't think any of you can beat that.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Whatever - you slap-hitting chumpzillas just keep 2nd place warm for me.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

"slap-hitting" my ass, I'm .01 points behind you in slugging dude!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

you employed Alex Sanchez = SLAP SLAP SLAP SLAP

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

(sez the guy that TRADED for Omar Infante)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

(BTW: Nice middle infield performance today, holy shit!)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

(TY! I take full credit! And I take credit for Dunn's stolen base, too!)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

BTW: someone release their closer so I can get some saves, thanks!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Jee, Twins and A's are tanking, I'll have no use for NATHAN and "Anjelica" HUSTON STREET. Especially since TYLER "TEXAS" WALKER is MANMOUNTAIN OF CLOSING.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 18 August 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

yeah, nothing like my dynamic duo of brian fuentes and fernando rodney.

uhhh...

*crickets chirping*

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 18 August 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Ooooh, 2nd place is so roomy!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

The only reason second place was warm for you, Dave, was because I farted there.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

I just realized I have Tampa's offense.

Raging Hardens: 550R, 121HR, 542RBI
Rays: 569R, 121HR, 546RBI

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Dang!

In me news, I was only .5 points away from the top spot entering the day. I have hopes that Blanton's awesome start & more clutchness from the once-slumping Felipe Lopez and ROY longshot Jonny Gomes get me over da hump.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 August 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

i'm giving up and starting on football.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 22 August 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

i'm pretty psyched about going from being solidly in first place for most of the year and then fall to 11th in ONE WEEK. THANKS INGE AND WILKY!!!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 22 August 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Yo.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

What the hell has happened to my bullpen? True to the team name, I've got one guy (Wise) on the DL and another (Ayala) who looks like he's headed there. Standridge started sucking as soon as I grabbed him, so I dumped him for Dingman, who gave up a homer today* (his first day on my roster).

All of this bullpen suckage is wiping out some great starts, too.

* at least he coughed it up to one of my hitters

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

I should shut my yap when I'm ahead. Beckett got waxed by the Cibula clan, and THEN Clement pitches OK but hits THREE GUYS! And Felipe Lopez got caught stealing TWICE!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 25 August 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I know what you mean, Barry. I think fantasy baseball is solely responsible for an overwhelming feeling of loathing towards middle relief/closers that's been creeping up on me over the last year or so.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 25 August 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

More like Dingerman!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 26 August 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

oh

oh

oh

oh

....

wait for it ....

ZING!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 August 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

DANG

Just like that, Halladay and Lowell are DISMISSED from my team. I'm down to seven of the original twenty-one I drafted, including just three out of my top ten.

By season's end, maybe I can make it a clean sweep. OK, that's crazy talk, however, Ayala and Klesko might be hurt, and Reitsma has been sucking. Realistically, I should be able to pare it down to three or four out of the original bunch.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 27 August 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

No word on Ayala, Vidro is practically a gimp, Chris Duffy (hitting .350) just went on the DL, and Johnny Damon left tonight's game after getting hit on the hand with a pitch.

It's getting comical now.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh man. Duffy is just a kick in the nuts, aint it!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

*checks TB/Boston box*
Woot! Ortiz with 2 tacos!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

I never had a chance this year with how Jim Thome, Oliver Perez and Chipper Jones seasons worked out. Chipper has played well, but he has missed over half a season. Thome and Perez have both been total junk. I also lost my most consistent hitter Chris Barmes for the year and put him on the DL.

My hitting has improved over the second half, except my power stats, but my pitching ERA has slid. Too many starters and too much inconistency has put me near the bottom of too many counting stats.

Even if Perez, Chipper and Thome would have matched their production from last year, I think I'd still only be around 5th or 6th place.

I'll just have to try again next year.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I've fallen three places in three days. "Pete Incunabula" is not as clever a name as I thought.
