I'm starting this thread in honor of Hee-Seop Choi, claimed by the Red Sox today.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 25 March 2006 00:02 (twenty years ago)

Why are people so excited about this? I mean, he's better than JT Snow but he's not a particularly good player. He's better than a lot of guys with steady jobs, but why get excited about him? I mean, he probably isn't even as good as Roberto Petagine, who never even got a chance.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Saturday, 25 March 2006 08:40 (twenty years ago)

when he platooned with saenz they put up a pretty decent ops/hr combo. in the middle of nl 1Bs but still pretty decent. Im surprised the dodgers just gave him up on waivers instead of trading him to boston.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Saturday, 25 March 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

My favorite Hee Seop fantasy line, from when I owned him briefly a few years back: 0-0, 4 BB, 3 R

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 25 March 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

His OBP jumped 19 points that game, making him a .239/.379/.540 oddity at the plate.

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 25 March 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Another fun fact about that game: the opposing pitcher was Brandon Webb, a guy with a lifetime 2:1 k/bb ratio. Webb issued 5 walks that game, 4 to Choi.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 25 March 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

The Prospectus guys at thir NJ appearance couldn't figure how all those other teams passed on claiming Choi. Someone (Nate Silver, I think) suggested there's an element of reserved Asian players being perceived as "not passionate."

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 27 March 2006 23:55 (twenty years ago)

In Boston’s 12-11 win, which ended when Hee-Seop Choi walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Gathright raced home while Julio Lugo was caught in a rundown between first and second in the eighth. Second baseman Zach Borowiak threw to Tavarez, who tagged Gathright out as the outfielder slid.

Gathright said Tavarez stood on his right forearm after the tag. Tavarez agreed but said he wanted to beat Gathright to the punch.

“I saw him try to get up and I wasn’t going to let him throw a punch at me right away,” said Tavarez, who threw a second punch on the top of Gathright’s head. “You hear about whoever throws the first punch gets the win. That’s what happened.”

In the Devil Rays clubhouse, Gathright rolled up his right sleeve to show a small scratch on his right forearm. He said he had pushed Tavarez’s left knee to try to free his arm. But Tavarez drew his fist back with Gathright’s right knee and hand still on the ground.

“It just kind of grazed the jaw,” Gathright said.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 27 March 2006 23:56 (twenty years ago)

What a jerk-off. I hope he gets suspended for a good long time (and I wouldn't be sorry to see it be permanent.)

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh yay. CHB probably has about 295 nicknames lined up for JT right now. I'm gonna blame Lucchino for this one. Tho if they can just sedate JT between games, & keep him locked up Hannibal-Lecter style when he's not being used, maybe it'll work out.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Surprising that fistfirst Tavares is the same dude who was crying in the dugout near the end of Game 6 of the '95 World Series. Mantears, maybe, but still, tears.

"Yeah, it just kind of glazed," Gathright said. "He hits like a woman."

...

Said Tavarez: "They were yelling at me, 'Let's meet one on one in the parking lot. I don't want to have a fight, man. What happened happened and it's over and I don't want to fight nobody."

looks like manny's peculiarities may get trumped by tavarez's peculiarities. and i think signing (t)hee sop choi is a sign that mike lowell won't be coming north when the sox break camp.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Has Lowell been that bad? I haven't seen numbers, but what I've read suggests that ML, ideally, will become a $8M defensive caddy, allowing YOUK to get full-time love @ the hot corner, while Hee-Seop hits 'em & JT misses 'em on the other side of the diamond.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

I would just like to point out to the Choi cranks (as it has been pointed out in various places) that, a few years ago, the Sox took a flier on a similar type of hitter - K happy, questionable attitude, no success against lefties. That hitter was David Ortiz. And now you know the rest of the story.

c(''c) (Leee), Friday, 31 March 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

i know a manager's got to back his guys up, but tavarez was clearly in the wrong and i have no problem w/ a 10 game suspension. kind of a douche comment.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 31 March 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

I think considering Tavarez past incidents on the field, 10 games is a gift. I think this is the fifth or sixth time the guy has been suspended with most of them being for brawls on the field or arguing with umpires. Boston should not be suprised by this kind of crap, the guy is muy loco.

Is there a current player that has been suspended more times than Tavarez?

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 31 March 2006 23:53 (twenty years ago)

I agree that Tavarez is getting off easy, I just wanted to point out the ROIDS ROFFLES bit. And according to that article, this suspension brings his career record to 4.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 April 2006 06:35 (twenty years ago)

If Foulke is healthy (as he seems to be), is Papelbon still the closer? At this point I think Papelbon is a better option.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 April 2006 06:48 (twenty years ago)

So does no Coco for 1 month (potentially) mean Adam Stern gets a venti mocha latte in CF, or do teh Sox slide Nixon over & have Wily Mo's Mannyness in RF? Or a little of both?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 10 April 2006 13:07 (twenty years ago)

ugh...on the o's broadcast, it sounded like they were just keeping stern up for rule 5 purposes but would send him down when a year is up so they can recall willie "mays hayes" harris.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 10 April 2006 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I think Pap has the stuff to be a starter and I think Sox do too, so it would be nice to get Foulke into the swing of things especially if one of our other guys goes down or starts sucking out (Wells, anybody)

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Nixon spelled Damon in CF a few times! Of course, when they got Gabby, he became the defacto CF whenever Damon's hair acted up. I'm guessing Sterno will get a chance to shine. Tho just slotting in Pena might work. Move Loretta up to the leadoff spot, stick Youk in the 2 hole ... oh, the fun to be had w/ Manny & Wily side by side. Make it so, Tito!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

If Foulke is healthy (as he seems to be), is Papelbon still the closer?

depends if he's effective or not. they'll give him an opportunity but i wouldn't be surprised if they're quick with the hook and make him the world's highest paid set up man.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

it sounded like they were just keeping stern up for rule 5 purposes but would send him down when a year is up so they can recall willie "mays hayes" harris.

yeah, the sox have an excess of outfielders and willie can play a little 2nd in addition to being able to swipe a bag. is coco going on the dl? the globe says he might be gone a month. if that's so will crisp go to the dl, keep stern on the roster and brign up willie anyway?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Jimmy Mod: My theme is DEATH (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Anyone mind if I kinda fart on the Ortiz extension news? Paying $10-$12M for a DH's DH heading into his 30s (even one as good & snuggly as Big Papi) seems to be asking for it.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Maybe his body will hold up for longer (compared to, say, Thome) because he rarely plays in the field?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I know Thome's been killing the ball this season, but my point is that you don't want to pay 12M/season for a guy with a questionable bill of health.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps. Also, it'll help if folks batting behind him hit HRs so he can trot around the bases instead of run.

[x-post]

The fact that Papi's Fenway tenure has been (to my knowledge) owie-free makes me fear some debilitating wrist injury that'll of course strike right after he crosses his T on this contract. Because, y'know, I'm a Red Sox fan.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Paying $10-$12M for a DH's DH heading into his 30s (even one as good & snuggly as Big Papi) seems to be asking for it.

after the shit-storm that surrounded losing damon, mueller, martinez, etc. and with manny probably going away when his deal is done the sox really weren't in a place to low ball their most popular (and productive) player.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:11 (twenty years ago)

There was a shitstorm when Mueller left? I think that was more of a light shitdrizzle. Certainly nothing compared to Damon and Pedro.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

There was a shitstorm when Mueller left? I think that was more of a light shitdrizzle. Certainly nothing compared to Damon and Pedro.

yeah, i meant more of a collective storm. a fecal weather pattern if you will. plus trot will be gone too, none of the dirtdogs will be around anymore.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Shit storm, Schmidt storm. Every move they didn't make (re: resigning folks from the '04 team) is justifiable - Pedro wanted too much for too long, Damon's ready to fall apart / sing backup for Audioslave, Mueller's an injury risk & 35! For the record, I was also on the "meh" side re: V-Tek's extension, which might still bear meh fruit next year or the year after (tho I hope not, obviously).

The way I see it, TheoCo should err on the side of letting the vets walk in lieu of paying too much for an expected decline. Of course, if there are two guys that'd raise fan's ire should they (have) walk(ed), it'd be Varitek & Papi, so bringing them back is an acceptable cost of business. Trot and his gimptastic ways can squat, tho, even if - hell, especially if - this year ends up like his 2003 did.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

i'm not convinced that $10-12M will be far beyond market rate for ortiz even with a decline. assuming the wheels don't come off the truck all at once, a la jim ed rice or mo vaughn.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Although it's a bit cruel to post this on the Red Sox thread instead of the Mets one.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Some choice Ortiz quotes from the press conference:

"You have a lot of people coming right at you when you are on the market. I feel great playing in Boston. I feel like this is my house. I want to protect my house. I like to put everything I have out there every single day. I thank the Red Sox for doing this while they still have control of me."

"You need to know that there are guys that have your back. When guys have your back, you can have the best come out of one player. In Boston, you have so many people behind you that support you. There is no way you walk onto the field and you don’t feel like playing baseball. Wait ‘til you play your first game at Fenway Park, you may need a diaper."

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Monday, 10 April 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Paying $12million a year for a hitter like Papi does not seem excessive to me--even if I didn't have the emotional attachment. Dude's 30 now. Having him til he's 35 sounds just about right, and there's no way you're doing that for less than 12/year.

Rooting for the Jays is stressful enough, but I also have four fantasy team players involved in this game, including Josh Towers and his 10.50 lifetime ERA pitching in Fenway Park (if he gets rocked then I only have myself to blame, but I could really use the GS and some IP right now).

I hate/love these real life + fantasy league conflict games!

RF Nixon returned to the lineup after missing the previous five games with a strained left groin. ... DiNardo's other start came last Sept. 2 against Baltimore, when he allowed four runs -- one earned -- in six innings. ... Varitek appeared to be hobbling running down the line on his ground outs in the second and fourth, but played the entire game. ... if it said the homer was his 500th basehit with boston that would be plain to see but as it was worded it would appear that the homer was the 500th he had hit with boston.

At least 450, the way things are looking right now. &, if Lowell keeps getting to 2nd base w/ the Green Monster like he's been, he'll be getting those PAs @ 1st.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 20 April 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I mean folks, really... '04 meets '86... to wit: once we get Foulke kinda sorta on track he will provide the wrenching ninth innings that real Red Sox teams have historically provided; an over-the-hill backup first baseman with very bad wheels; young, hungry up-and-comers in all corners of the park; the stalwarts still in place (tho I do miss Mueller). And of course the longer Johnny's gone the more we're all glad. And Beckett putting up Pedro-like innings. I think we are primed and ready for a very successful run at gargantuan disappointment, gentlemen.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 20 April 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I think we are primed and ready for a very successful run at gargantuan disappointment, gentlemen.

could very well be but it doesn't have the same feeling as it did pre-2004 does it? it's not a "they did it again dammit and they'll never do it and i'll be a sucker forever" feeling to it, i think it will be more of a "they didn't do it this year" type of thing. even if it is a total collapse.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 20 April 2006 19:23 (twenty years ago)

In the SI article naming the Red Sox sportsmen of the year for 2004, they refer to a couple who named their first child (born the day of WS Game 4) Damon. Think they're regretting it now?

Should have named him Papi.

which is better than when they were calling him "geddy lee".

from today's globe:

April 27, 2006
Hansen promoted
By Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff
The Red Sox today promoted relief pitcher Craig Hansen from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Pawtucket and sent reliever Charlie Zink from Pawtucket to Portland.

The 22-year-old Hansen has been dominant for the Sea Dogs, going 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA in 5 games for Portland to begin his first full year in pro ball since being selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2005 draft.

According the Globe's Gordon Edes, Hansen is expected to arrive in Pawtucket in time for tomorrow's game, and is expected to pitch three innings of relief.

He was unscored upon in his first 20 1/3 innings for Portland (a franchise record) from last Aug. 11 until April 24. Hansen allowed his first minor league run in 23 1/3 innings on Monday night at Altoona during a three-inning relief stint.

Josh Beckett was terrible last night and he blew the game over thinking those first at bats against Hafner and Martinez. The guy took 30 minutes to pitch around those guys and walk them, then gives Broussard a taco batting pitch next up. Beckett completely over thought his way out of the game and Veritek was being completely Carlton Fisk like for letting his pitcher slow everything to a crawl.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 18 May 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

DiNardo = teh suck
Alvarez = teh suck
Seanez = teh suck
Tavarez = teh suck

I think I see a pattern... aside from Tek and A-Gon's (and Manny's??) total inability to get a base hit.

um can we please talk about why Tito batted MIRABELLI in place of Manny in a crucial spot of Sunday's game??????? what was amazing is that the Sox never quite felt out of it, and they put lots of guys on in the 8th and 9th but i think Tito kind of out-managed himself - the NL style of play eludes him. we could have brought in Papi to pinch for Cora in the 8th, but then who would play the infield? so Papi had to wait until the 9th and become a baserunner rather than bringing anybody home.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:06 (twenty years ago)

(actually Seanez wasn't that bad)

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Choi biding his time wisely
Hee-Seop Choi, a big-leaguer last season, has had fun with the PawSox instead of griping.
01:00 AM EDT on Monday, May 15, 2006
BY SHALISE MANZA YOUNG
Journal Sports Writer

PAWTUCKET -- Hee-Seop Choi is watching what's going on in Boston, but he doesn't seem too worried about how it is affecting him.

Claimed off waivers by Boston during spring training, the 27-year-old first baseman was brought into the Red Sox organization despite there already being two first basemen on the big-league roster: Kevin Youkilis and J.T. Snow.

When the team acquired Choi, Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said the team had been tracking the 6-foot-4 lefty for some time and was impressed with his "power, patience and hands at first base."

But Choi still had options, and Boston quickly made the most of that fact. After suffering a left hamstring strain before the end of spring training, Choi remained in Fort Myers, then came to Pawtucket for a 20-day rehab assignment. But when the 20 days were complete, Choi was recalled to Boston and optioned back to Pawtucket on the same day.

Choi, the first Korean-born position player in MLB history, spent the last two seasons with the Dodgers, but became expendable when the team signed former Sox star Nomar Garciaparra.

In 133 games with Los Angeles last year, Choi hit .253 with 15 homers, 42 RBI and had an on-base mark of .336.

With Youkilis playing so well, both offensively and defensively, Snow is barely getting any playing time, which leaves little need for Choi in Boston right now.

Choi is taking it in stride.

"It's tough because they have two first baseman with 'Youk' and Snow, and Youkilis is playing very well," Choi said. "If I go up, I can't play every day. But here, I can play every day. I'm just working hard here and having fun."

PawSox manager Ron Johnson said Choi has not said a word about his situation.

"I don't get into situations and what they might have told him," Johnson said. "He's fun to be around and he's a great teammate. I know they think a lot of him in Boston. He's a big-time professional; he comes in here every day ready."

In four major league seasons -- he began his career with the Cubs, and has also been with the Marlins Choi has a .240 career batting average and a .349 on-base percentage.

But he has shown remarkable patience this season: through 26 games with Pawtucket, Choi is batting .259, but his on-base mark of .439 is third in the International League.

"Sometimes I try (too) hard to hit it hard," Choi said. "But now I am trying to swing at good pitches. I know how pitchers throw to me. I like walks -- they are the same as a hit."
Choi has 20 strikeouts, but he has drawn 27 walks.

"From what I see, he's a very well-disciplined hitter; he has good strike-zone management. He has a good idea of what's a strike and what's not," Johnson said. "When he came up, he hit alley to alley, and from what I've heard, other clubs were trying to get him to pull the ball. That was one of the focuses when he came here -- to get him back to the hitter he used to be."

IsoP = SLG - BA.

It's a measure of XBH (ie "power").

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Although the argument here is whether a one-tool player's ability to hit XBHs is dependent on his PT (aka the "clutch groove").

I don't watch NESN often, but are the commentators always as hideously boring as they were tonight? There were moments, even when they were calling exciting plays, that felt like they were about to fall asleep.

Ortiz's slugging steadily increased from his early 20s until his 29th, with a drop this year as a 30-year old. That's a fairly standard peak progression.

Compare to the radio announcers Joe Castiglione and Jerry Trupiano, who try to make every play, routine or not, sound incredibly thrilling. Watching the game with the radio on is quite edifying to see a dribbled foul ball described as a shot that just went foul. And oh those adventurous fly balls! Last night when he was calling the Millidge gaffe I thought it was just hyperbole until the ball fell.

Remy has a tendency to let him focus drift during blowouts, which is usually entertaining. Plus that's when he kicks it into self-promotion overdrive. I think Orsillo got hired only because he genuinely finds Rem-Dawg's jokes funny.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Whatever you think of those two, they're the Starlite Express compared with the cadavers on the radio, who sound as though they're broadcasting from deep within an abandoned mineshaft, eating hard tack and old peas until someone comes to rescue them (NB: no one is coming to rescue them).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

I've never been sure, but what constitutes a "good" OBP? What's the OBP equivalent of .300 BA?

c('°c) (Leee), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

From BP Basics:

Generally speaking, if a player today puts up a .360 OBP and .500 SLG, he's doing his job. If he's a shortstop in Dodger Stadium with these numbers (and with an ample number of plate appearances, of course), he's an MVP candidate; if he's a first baseman in Denver with these numbers, he's nothing special.

Bill James once wrote that OBP is the single most important batting stat because it measures the tendency of a batter to avoid making an out.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

w/r/t to Hee Seop Choi, he obviously has a keen eye... I feel bad for him because it doesn't seem (AFAIK) like anybody's ever given him a starting job (or 200 consecutive ABs... or both).

c('°c) (Leee), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

The overall AL BA/OBP last year was .268/.330, the low end of top 10 BAs was about .305, the low end of Top 10 OBPs was .375.

So I would say that if OBP ever got accepted as the New BA for announcers, .300 would equal like .375-.380ish, maybe?

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

I trace Hee Seop's misfortune back to Crime Dog's pointless pursuit of the 500 HR milestone at the end of 2002; a season nearly as lost as this one. Hee Seop could've had two months to hit major league pitching, instead he got 50 AB.

Cracking his brain open against the Yankees the next year didn't help either.

Will Carroll:

Some Sox fans might be asking themselves why Varitek needs surgery when Manny Ramirez's similar injury allows him to play. I'd simply point out that Ramirez isn't squatting for nine innings almost every day. This should have little or no impact on Varitek when he returns, short- or long-term.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 3 August 2006 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

Y'know what, screw Varitek. Dude's been bad all season, and has been one of the most overrated players around for years. If Lopez is even halfway decent over the next month, the job should be his for the rest of the season. Of course they'd never do that to their precious little captain.

I like the Sox, but the love up here for this mediocre, boring old white guy mystifies me. But then I also think Schilling's a massive tool, too, so what do I know.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

Varitek's been very solid w/ the bat, and while it's hard to really measure his value wrt working w/ pitchers, his ridonkulous work ethic is a matter of public record (tho whether it's extraordinary, or run of the mill, I dunno). He, unfortunately, thanx to the press and the C, is now the Jeter of the Red Sox, wherein everyone around the team polishes his shaft, and naysayers roger him w/ a stick of bees.

Mike Timlin, you are getting a vote of NO CONFIDENCE. Also, yeah, Beckett, enuf taters - try a starch-free diet, bro.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 4 August 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

BUJU DANSON (Adrian Langston), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand the Varitek hate. He's had a poor season, but he's been very valuable over the years in a measurable way, not to mention whatever intangibles he may or may not bring to the table.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

He's been valuable for three seasons after being bad for several more and then they signed him to a ridiculous (almost Lopez-like) contract for his old age while the Sox let Pedro (and Damon, but I didn't really care) go for similar money.

milo z (mlp), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that part was a bit inexplicable. Then again, no one wants to be publicly hanged, as would probably have happened to Epstein if they got rid of Varitek. But that doesn't change the fact that they can afford him and he deserves to stay with the team until he is no longer of value. Anyway, they probably will be able to ditch him to a Ned Coletti or Brian Sabean once he really becomes worthless.

The fact that they should have kept Pedro is another (undeniable) matter altogether.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, Sabean only picks up completely middling players who've never been stars.

c('°c) (Leee), Friday, 4 August 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know, Vizquel is about as close as you can get to Varitek among shortstops. Not a superstar, but beloved by the locals and effective on offense.

Matheny is pretty much the NL version of Varitek, apart from the fact that he hits like Neifi Perez.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 4 August 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

Which is kind of like saying Muggsy Bogues is like Magic Johnson, except for the offense.

c('°c) (Leee), Friday, 4 August 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Mike Matheny (pre-injury) ---> .231
Jason Varitek (pre-injury) ---> .243

Neifi Perez ---> .274

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 4 August 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, I love percentages!

Varitek: .331
Matheny: .276
Perez: .265

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 4 August 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

The Red Sox would probably be better off with Matheny. He's not that much worse with a bat than 2006 Lopez, supposedly is an above-average defender and costs a lot less.

The Lopez deal is odd, really - there's no one in the Red Sox farm system that could put up a .315/.400 OBP/SLG for a couple of months?

milo z (mlp), Friday, 4 August 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno dude. Saying Beckett is public enemy #1 is severely underestimating the level of loathing people have for the bullpen up here. Local barfly "Paulie" at the place I've been watching games never refers to Julian Tavarez as anything other than "that motherfucker."

Also, re Red Sox catching depth: with Shoppach and Bard both traded, the options are Ken Huckaby and Corky Miller, and nothing else. If all it cost was Adam Stern or whoever, this was a genius trade. Lopez'll probably outhit Varitek by a mile AND play the JT Snow role in September. They probably would have put in for Chris Widger otherwise.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 4 August 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 4 August 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

For what it's worth, in limited appearances, Huckaby has actually hit pretty well for Boston... granted that he's been atrocious in Pawtucket.

Matheny is probably out for the year, so I don't think he's helping anyone anytime soon.

I had a dream last night that Francoeur somehow got out before seeing a single pitch.

My constantly expanding dislike for Varitek is a bit irrational, I know. Mostly it's due to how overzealously Sox fans seem to love the guy, and the fact that that love is based primarily on "intangibles" like clubhouse leadership, game-calling, etc. Those things may not be intangible to coaches and teammates, but since all fans have to go on in such matters are media reports, and the media up here have proven time and again to be willing to dish out whatever propaganda the owners desire, elevating the man to godhead in spite of his average/mediocre offensive abilities is kinda silly. Also he's way overpaid and they were idiots in letting Pedro walk and that little "c" looks bad from a design perspective, etc., etc. And finally it's annoying how he's treated like the heart, soul, AND brains of the team, whereas anyone should've been able to see that the first two-thirds of that equation were filled by the Dominican trio of Manny, Papi, and Pedro, the best third of which trio was allowed to walk and then smeared in the press.

Final summation: Red Sox fans seem to hate too many of their great players while celebrating too many of the mediocre ones.

c) Jeter's 9th inning hit has secured his reputation as Senor Clutch-A-Fist w/ all the sports bloviators
d) the Red Sox starting staff (outside of Schilling) is buttass
e) Pat Gillick & Dave Littlefield are dumb little turds
f) this series cannot end soon enough

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

The Red Sox got thrashed by the Yankees, had more than a lineup's worth of injuries and plummeted out of contention... so for that reason, you're "taking Jeter's side" when he talks like a cock? I guess i don't follow the logic. Got to love Damon piling on, too. Those guys deserve each other. Now if we could only get Schilling over there, the guy's a born Yankee.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

It's just incredible the way Yankee fans react - and Yankees themselves - when someone - even Big Papi - has the EFFRONTERY to bring up the fact that the salary difference between the 2006 New York Yankees and the 2006 Boston Red Sox is approximately the entire payroll of the 2005 World Champion Chicago White Sox. It's like "BLA BLA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" - a total recoil reaction into defensive mode... "well... well... at least we're goin to the playoffs!" Yeah, exactly, Jeter, you jackass.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

gear (gear), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'd venture to say that this season the Yankees lineup suffered way more due to the injuries to their team than the Red Sox. The fact that the Red Sox really only played well this season during interleague play against the NL East was the reason Sox fans were even thinking they had a chance.

My thought (as evidenced above) was that by mid-August the Sox still hadn't surpassed the injury-decimated Yankees was the sign that they were done, even before the heart murmurs and sore knees and wheels falling off.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 12 September 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

But at any rate, the Sox are #2 in payroll, my sympathy extends about as far as my freshly clipped cuticle. "We're not as evil as the really evil guys, we swear!!!"

Bobby Abreu, $13.6 million.

I am not bitching and moaning. I don't think Big Papi was either. Asked a question by a reporter comparing his MVP credentials with Derek Jeter's - a comparison, you may note, between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, not any other team - and Papi had to GALL to mention the GULF that separates the Yankees from every other team in baseball, INCLUDING the Red Sox - in a very roundabout way, too, by complimenting their lineup - and he's some kind of sore loser? Only in the Stalinesque climes of Yankeeland is such a commonplace filed verboten.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't see papi mention any GULF. although he should be careful about what he considers "valuable"--he's hitting in front of manny, and the rest of the sox lineup are properly godfearing. maybe he should have mentioned jeter's range instead...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 01:02 (nineteen years ago)

The Red Sox got thrashed by the Yankees, had more than a lineup's worth of injuries and plummeted out of contention... so for that reason, you're "taking Jeter's side" when he talks like a cock?

stence is right, I was being a bit facetious in that "taking Jeter's side" isn't really a consequence of the Red Sox screwing the pooch ... however, Papi is completely full of shit in this case, fishing for sympathy and trying to present himself as Bonds 2001-4, who could singlehandedly transform a below-average offense into one of the best in the NL.
