I can only suspect that bias is at work. Why is there bias against Franz Ferdinand? I have no fucking idea. Because they wear funny outfits that aren't cool like Caroliner's funny outfits or Lightning Bolt's funny outfits? Because of the guy's voice?

I just listened to "The Dark of the Matinee." I absolutely DO NOT understand someone not hearing that as genuinely EXCELLENT two guitars/bass counterpoint in the context of an excellently written song. (In which the band members, btw--apart from what they're doing on their instruments--involve themselves in a whole vocal arrangement.)

Franz Ferdinand's songwriting has some genuine (and somewhat sophisticated, compositionally speaking) pop dynamics at work. Considerably more than I hear in Interpol and the Strokes (when I hear those bands on the radio or in a record store on see them on TV, anyway--I don't know the albums much).

Anyway, to return to the holy canon that I seem to have demeaned: Gang of Four have always been overrated. Chairs Missing is a good record, about on par with the Franz Ferdinand record compositionally and in terms of playing execution, though, yes, more appealing to me conceptually/artistically.

I disagree. Songs that come to mind are "Her Head's Revolving" and "Simon in the Park" on Arrive Without Traveling and probably a lot of the stuff on the Salvation Army album.

I can't think of The Dream Syndicate without thinking of Karl Precoda's "Halloween" which may not "rock" any harder than any other PU band, but is by far my favorite song of the subgenre.
