LAGEOS PLAQUE
NASA and the spacecraft contractor, the Aerospace Systems Division of
the Bendix Corporation, asked Dr. Carl Sagan to design a LAGEOS
plaque.
http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/spacecraft/images/image039.gif

())(())()()()(()(LASER)()()()LA(Z)E(R)()()()((L)()()(A)(S(E)R()()()) (ex machina, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The remainder of the LAGEOS plaque consists of three maps of the
Earth's surface. The first map denotes the Earth 268 million years in
the past. All the continents are shown together in one mass. The
close fit of South America into West Africa was one of the first hints
that continental drift actually occurs.

The middle map represents the zero point in time for the other two
maps. It displays the present configuration of the planets.

The final map shows the Earth's surface 8.4 million years from now --
very roughly the estimated lifetime of the LAGEOS. Many important
changes in the Earth's surface are shown, including the drift of
California out into the Pacific Ocean.

Whoever comes upon the LAGEOS plaque needs only compare a current map
of the Earth's geography with that in the lower two maps to calculate
roughly the difference between his time and ours. Drift rates of
about an inch per year can, in fact be estimated by comparing the
bottom two maps. The same objective of LAGEOS and the method of
telling time on the plaque are identical.

btw, found another Vels record. My friends from Something Else records bought some dudes collection. It was 50% Yellow Magic Orchestra related, 46% Nonesuch, minimalist and "new music", 3% Hall and Oates, James Taylor and Art of Noise and 1% The Vels.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I have worked in decorative furniture manufacture, camp counseloring, ice cream distribution, short-order fry cooking, bookstore clerking, pizza delivering, wine telemarketing (yes, it's true), baseball stadium vendoring, architectural gift shop cash registering, transcription writing/editing, real estate advertising (writing/editing ad copy, ad graphic design, account management), online training (for investment bank), and now chemical market reportering. Oh and dog walking and tour managing, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I am basically good for nothing.

Which Vels record, Dan? Unfortunately @l!c3 and I recently broke up.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You should get into the legal document copying game. There is BIG MONEY there.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Work for a non-profit or become a paralegal.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil, which stadium and what products did you vend?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried working for a non-profit, they wouldn't hire me.

xpost gygax! - Wrigley Field, mostly Pepsi but occasionally hot dogs and peanuts (the latter was the best).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I told you about that before. It was 1998, the year the Cubs beat your Giants in that one-game playoff. Oh I forgot that I sold water during the last regular-season game, which was great because it was super-ridiculously-hottt but sold out so I made some bank.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry to hear that dude.

for work, hate to say it, but advertising is bouncing back and if you want a crappy copywriting job that will pay decent, I'm sure you can find one without to much trouble. But avoid FCB like the plague. Smaller upwardly-mobile firms are always a much better choice for many, many reasons.

My plan is to quit this nonsense and balance a multitude of part-time things, but that frightens me.

I want to work on Acute Records and it's website, create a nyhappenings website to eventually earn money, DJ a few times a week sell-out type gigs where I don't have to promote, do some part time/freelance graphic design and print-production work, work part-time at a record/video store or something for a bit more income etc. All at once. The hope is all of this could add up to what I make now, but be MUCH more satisfying.

[CONTROVERSIAL MODERATOR EDIT]

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even know who the small ad agencies are in NYC. (not that I'm that interested in ad agencies, anyway)

Just now, as I was walking to BURRITOVILLE, I saw that Century 21 is hiring. That's gotta be like the worst job on earth.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Work at Burritoville.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think they'd hire me.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell them about all the publicity that you do on the internet for them.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

nobody refuses free publicity, dean?. Nor does anyone ever want to pay for it.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

So, I guess you're not cut out for advertising then.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

nope! Also, I like women, and don't go in for the sexual harassment thing. So that also excludes me from being an adman.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe you can be a lesbian?

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

brock (brock), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

They may not care about the salary requirements, Joel. It happens.

Brock, I'd call on Thursday or Wednesday afternoon at the earliest.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, I just feel so fucking dumb. Like who knows, maybe they wouldn't contact me anyway, but if they don't because of this, then perhaps I don't deserve a job anyway.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Quit being so down on yourself. Your chances of getting this job from this one application are pretty slim, so view anything that happens as positive.

Also, HR people are not necessarily guaranteed to be on top of it always, so I wouldn't worry about that.

(except for the HR people at my work who are always on top of it and definitely are an exception, imo)

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

some of both.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Mostly, though. If so, what type of things are you reading as clues?

I'm just sort of curious because I'm always very paranoid when it comes to things like this, but I get reassured that I've no reason to be.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I am about 70% certain I am about to be fired because of things (personal politics mostly beyond my control) happening in my office. I hope I'm wrong.

Fuck it - basically, the people here liked the girl who used to do my job a lot. But she quit. Ever since I got here, they have given monosyllabic, passive-agressive reponses to all my requests for help and been as condescending and unhelpful as possible. Unsurprisingly, I have made some mistakes, and I can't help but be convinced that they almost willed this to happen and have run screaming to my (ditzy and distant) boss to tell him I am no good. Now a girl who was hired to be a receptionist is being unsubtly trained (yeah, TRAINING - like I never got) to replace me while I am obviously being fazed out of everything without explanation.

And if you think I am lazy and just passing the buck, that's your perogative.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I can relate to that a bit. When I started here, I replaced TWO GIRLS whom all of the men in the office seemed attracted to on some levels ... the delivery guys / couriers especially.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

adam.'s response is very close to mine, although I don't think anybody particularly liked the woman who did it before me. According to my friend who works here, she was basically incompetent (I'm mostly incompetent, mainly because at this point I'm too afraid to ask any questions).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you guys both work in small offices?

< 50 people?

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yes.

5 people.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I guess that it's easier for people to try and maneuver things like that in small offices whereas in large ones, people just divide themselves into gangs and fight it out.
