I'm willing to bet that JON WILLIAMS had PATCHES!

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon Williams was more of a 1" button kinda guy. He had a BLACK FLAG hoodie, but I don't know if it was embroidered or a patch.. I can't recall.

msp (msp), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"What are your thoughts on the higney?"

I'm still listening to it for the first time. I'm starting to like it. Have you noticed how some of his melodies sound a lot like Pip Proud?

Also, as Robert Christgau would say, inspirational verse: "When you sign your name, it's an autograph. When you speak your mind, it's a paragraph. When you tell what you see, it's a photograph."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel so bad that I have not talked with Azita in almost a year. She's playing here Saturday and I'm djing the NNCK/Simon Finn show. Fucking bummer.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

dudes all - the last Azita record sucked

new for me: Chaw Mank (Mouthus + Richard the bass player from Sightings) CDR I got at their show tonight...

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah!! 2 days ago my brother asked to borrow my Op Ivy CD and I listened to it in his room, and then last night I was doing a radio show and someone requested Op Ivy (or first they requested the Mario theme music, but the radio station doesn't have that, so then they requested Op Ivy) and I played 4 songs in a row!! The Crowd, Bombshell, Unity, and Vulnerability! It was an excellent 4 song Op Ivy block!!!

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry RUSS! I didn't mean to dis the show or anything.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The position being taken is not to be mistaken
For attempted education or righteous accusation
Only a description, just an observation of the pitiful
Condition of our degeneration

those are really bad lyrics!!!

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all in the cadence, duder. Ska.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:16 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, those are just in the beginning of the song too, before the instruments start, which make them extra gay.

A girl in my grade in HS was Jesse's cousin or niece, I forget which!!

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It sets up the rest of the song!

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess...

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah -- but sort of pip proud crossed with neil young or something, melodywise at least. lyrically, higney is more like later rediscovered proud than the 60s more innocent sweeter proud. speaking of proud, the album he did with carter was great and its a shame he will never record again.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 26 August 2004 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey nobody applauded AaronHZ's good taste -- kid bought fuckin' Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick!! I am fuckin dead serious -- what's wrong with us?? this must be applauded.

"really don'ty mind if you sit this one out..."

Actually, I really love JT. There are great rock cuts on Benefit and Stand Up, I'm not even kidding.

Now ,.. the Four Freshman -- shit, those cocksuckers INVENTED the Beach Boys.

I'm pretty scared that I won't be able to secure a real fukkin' job again before this honkin' thing goes outta print. Such are the fortunes

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 26 August 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

kid? how old are you ME?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 26 August 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, I'm all of 32 -- believe me, the ol' gray liver ain't what she used to be ... but that comment was just sposed be endearing, aaron!

But I do love Jethro Tull, in all seriousness. Some cuts, anyway -- "A New Day Yesterday" and "To Cry You a Song" -- seriously heavy rock action (and my beloved Screaming Trees covered the former)

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 26 August 2004 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

oh. wow. you're 8 whole years older than me. geezer. I got ex-gfs older than you. hahaha.

i've been selling not buying these days. but my friend just gave me the gramme reissue, which i cannot recommend strongly enough if you're a noize dude looking for screwed up vaguely dancey (in the same way the mu/mu chan clan/etc are "dancey") electronic stuff.

yes, you were staring at it while you were holding it in your hands for about 10 seconds last night.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

how is the Jerry Rooth 45? It sounded interesting and I was gonna get it in my next F-tron order. Didn't Higney produce it or something? Btw, I think that the two non-album bonus tracks on Attic Demonstration are two of the worst songs I have ever heard.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Thursday, 26 August 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that the two non-album bonus tracks on Attic Demonstration are two of the worst songs I have ever heard.

ddb (ddb), Friday, 27 August 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Daniel, the Jerry Rooth 45 is really good. Not super shambolic like Higney, but still enjoyably bizarre in its own way. He has a beard and is wearing a cape on the cover.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 27 August 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

hhmmm ill have to check that out when chris from fusetron gets back from the black dice tour

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 27 August 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That Paul Revere and the Raiders thing is good.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 27 August 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

hey A.D., whats GET CRUNK...it sounds BOSS

ddb (ddb), Friday, 27 August 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

adam ,it basically came from me playing an untuned guitar for about 5 years, doing sort of creep folk (before i even knew who jandek was) and ive been playing casio noize since i was about 11. if i could sing, or at least be happy with my voice i would make straight up shoegaze space drone rock, a la slowdive, loop, etc

just buy a cheap guitar and learn a few chords and put it through your laptop maybe

just experiment really. ive been working on the right amount of reverb/efx to add to my crap vocals for months now.

kephm (kephm), Friday, 27 August 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe on a song here and there, but it's a total Camper Van context and you've got Segal and Lisher and Immergluck (and Krummenacher and Crispy Derson) playin' on it. Album of the year so far!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian how much Steely Dan do you have now? I've got Can't Buy A Thrill, Pretzel Logic, Aja and A Decade of Steely Dan.

I don't own LIZARD, for some reason. That one and ISLANDS are the only early KC recs I don't have. I need to get them.

The FIRST TWO and RED are amazing. Mind-blowing. STARLESS is pretty hot too

Reed OTM, but I also like Larks Tongues in Aspic. I haven't heard Starless.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 6 September 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Starless, Court of teh Crimson King, Red & even parts of Thrak (despite the production) are way way better than Lizard. But it was a dollar, whatever.

Once when I was like 13 I bought a jean jacket at a tag sale that had a cool painting of a sun on the back. A few years later I took it out again and looked at it and realized that the thing on the back was a full painting of the sun/moon design cover of 'Larks Tongues In Aspic'!!! It was awesome, but I gave it to this kid cause it was too small for me.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

listened to durutti column this morning. didn't know there was a Tomorrow 12". That is one of my all time favorite songs. all I ever wanted was your time, all you ever gave me, was tomorrow.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard songs here and there, but then I downloaded "Somebody's Party" and had to hear more.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a thread somewhere about him...be careful, some of the stuff can be lightweight new age, while some of it is wonderfully melancholic new wave, and much is in the middle. The best period is probably the first couple of albums, the instrumental Return of the Durutti Column, and the great records Another Setting and LC. Lips that Would Kiss is a great single from that period. Guitar and Other Machines is a later record, late 80s, but is really good, it's more electronic and digital then early releases. There was a period where he didn't release anything, word was he was struggling with depression and an eating disorder, but came back around the time of Factory Two with some new records that I've only recently heard, which seem spotty but have some good things on them.

If you like the non-pop new agey type stuff, his record Without Mercy is the best that's all drum machine, guitar and strings.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 17 September 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

On the way from amazon:
Sun Ra - The Magic City
Sun Ra - Cosmic Tones/Art Forms (2nd time buying it)
Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique - Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra/Sir Colin Davis
Berlioz: Requiem (Grande messe des morts) - Boston Symphony Orchestra/Seiji Ozawa
Bach: B Minor Mass - Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists/John Eliot Gardiner
Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7 - Vienna Philharmonic/Carlos Kleiber
Bizet: Carmen - Berlin Philharmonic/Herbert von Karajan
Chopin: Ballades and Scherzos - Artur Rubenstein
Debussy: La Mer; Saint-Saens: Organ Symphony - Boston Symphony Orchestra/Charles Munch
Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris; Grofe: Grand Canyon Suite - Columbia Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic/Leonard Bernstein
Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 95, 96, 98, 102, 103 and 104 (London) - Royal Concertgebouw Orcestra/Sir Colin Davis
Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 24 and 25 - Ivan Moravec; Acadeny of St. Martin in the Fields/Sir Neville Marriner
Schubert: Trout Quintet; Mozart: Clarinet Quintet - Rudolf Serkin, Harold Wright, Marlboro Festival string players
Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1; Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2 - Van Cliburn; RCA Symphony Orchestra/Kirill Kondrashin; Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Fritz Reiner

In case you're wondering, the last 10 are the CDs the NPR Guide recommends for beginning a classical collection. Gotta start somewhere. I'm also getting the Penguin Guide, which I understand is the standard for classical collectors.

ANY DIF. THAN THE OG VERS JACK?

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

im not sure what their exact reish game plan is, but it should be as good as the nikki sudden campaign i hope. as for now they're reissuing the first two albums minus a lot of the bonus tracks on the mute cds. im hoping that just means that the next round of swell maps reissues with all of the bonus crap, singles, etc. (collision time, train out of it, etc). thank god nikki owns the rights to everything so it can happen. it's nice to have a remastered post 91 version especially since i listen to this stuff so much.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that rules about "jane..."... must BUY... how's the secret mommy and zach hill? funny you bought a chadbourne record cause i picked up a copy of "worms with strings" this week via emusic.

also got Gerry Miles "Miles/Licht/Haino" from emusic which i'm digging but normally wouldn't have gone for. that's the funny thing about that site... i spend $15 a month and get 65 tracks and have to spend the 65 tracks by the end of the month or i lose them... so i end up around the end of my month downloading something random from atavistic or esp'disk or whatever. secretly canadian is on there... here's hoping they add more swell maps to it. (the alive records tracks are already on it.)

    Billed and Shipping to me:

    Short Cuts [Criterion Edition] 2xDVD
Bob Altman takes on Ray Carver's Arcata/Rural Oregon stories and intertwines them in suburban Los Angeles. Left-field ensemble cast delivers. You may enjoy the inimitable sound and fury this film delivers, esp. if you post to a faggy internet message board.
