so i have decided (perhaps in a bit of remorseful drink addled delirium) that i need to GET IN SHAPE. (sigh.) what exercises have you lot found useful?

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

my pre-22 exercise routine was starving and street drugs, so i've thought of that, thanks.

also, i dont plan on doing any of these outside the house: so no running.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 October 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

sit ups are supposed to be good, i started doing 50 a day (for a bet with L who said i couldn't do it) but then i kind of lost interest in doing them. but they're meant to be good. i walk a lot, everywhere basically

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Walk everywhere. I swear to god, it works wonders. I walk an average of five miles a day, and I've lost three stone. OK, but you do have to leave the house. But you'll save £££ on public transportation!

kate, Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i need to walk more, especially before it gets too cold. my best shape was when i was living in philly and had to walk 32 blocks a day just to get to work, etc etc. (conversely my worst shape was when i was living at home and had a car to cart my lazy ass around in.) it's helpful that everything is like 4 miles from my apartment.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i predict jess' "exercise regimen" will last for no more than 8 days.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

(my suggestion -> go through a wrenching breakup.)

i don't FEEL any better but i've lost seven pounds!

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember getting into an exercise challenge with one guy. Can't remember why, but I expect it was one of those times I got annoyed with someone assuming I was unfit because I was oddly shaped. He did an hour a day, I did zero. He gave up on about 40 press-ups, I went on to 50, and stopped there before the strain started showing.

This was a long time ago. Continuing that zero policy for decades has had its effects...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

(my suggestion -> go through a wrenching breakup.)

Ah, so that was what it was, and not the walking five miles a day at all!

kate, Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

8 days is a bit of a stretch mark.

walking will probably be for the best, but this is less about losing weight than that my body has the consistency of a lump of dough with toothpicks sticking out of it at odd angles.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah but it's tough to tone if you've got flub in the way, therefore: DUMP OR BE DUMPED

it is the only logical beginning

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

but-but its the only thing keeping me from offing myself, etc. etc.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

looks like you're screwed then

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I need to get back in shape, but I've been having some knee pain these past few months. Exercise would prolly be good for that, I know, but it hurts to actually do much of it.

(But when I was in the best shape of my life I went to the gym three times a week and did yoga, so apparently there is something to this exercise business.)

Jody Beth Rosen, Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe i can find some sort of genii to grant me adonis-hood.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

yoga...it works wonders for toning up etc and you can do it at home, so no embarrassing classes needed just a book from the library. it relaxes (also jolts writers block into oblivion , makes you feel great and you dont even have to do heaps every day or anything, just some exercises when you feel like it ( hopefully each day admittedly but every couple is ok too ).

donna (donna), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

no no jess do pilates!

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

dumping the girlfriend would lose you quite a bit of weight.

we chubby indie tarts do seem to take up a horrible lot of room.

(i'm watching you, mark p.)

oh, and jody beth....aren't a lot of yoga positions easy on the joints? there's also aikido and bicycling on flat land.

nancy b. (nancy b.), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

if you want i can send you my workout plan.

whatever you do, just remember that resistance training and cardio are equally important.

i don't presume to know what you eat, but declaring a moritorium on refined sugars (including pop) and extra carbohydrates will lose you a lot of weight.

mike (ro)bott, Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but i didn't mean it that way.

nancy tell us scandalous things.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

hey nance if you're still reading this (and you shouldn't be you should be working hem hem) go on AIM because i have something to ask you.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 October 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't really know anything scandalous.

and now i'm being a good girl and getting back to work. ugh.

nancy b. (nancy b.), Saturday, 12 October 2002 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

A few random tips that come to mind:

1) Use a Swiss ball for sit-ups, not the floor.

2) If you are weight lifting (which I've read actually helps you burn MORE calories, if you do it regularly):

a) The emphasis should definitely be on form/execution, NOT on proving to yourself/others how much weight you can lift. One rule of thumb is to choose weight where you can do 10-15 reps with some degree of challenge/difficulty.
b) Start with targeting larger muscles, then move to smaller muscles.
c) Be sure to mix it up and vary your routine from day to day; don't just choose the same two or three exercises/machines.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 12 October 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

alternatively, host some tapeworms

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 12 October 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

DANCE LIKE A MACHINE in yr living room. in fact, make this the only method in which yr allowed to listen to music.
(haha, aren't you geographically primed to become (abbreviation for straightedge)?)

Ess Kay (esskay), Saturday, 12 October 2002 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I was in my best shape when I ran a couple of miles a day and walked places on top of that...I HATED running SO MUCH, so i'd go do it really early in the morning to get it over with. then i realized i'd be in LESS pain if i just stopped running. so now i'm out of shape again.

but running is very very good for you in ways i didn't realize until i stopped (more flexibility, energy, etc.), even though you have to go outside. situps are no good in my experience but push ups and jumping up and down eventually get painful enough that they've got to be worth something.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 13 October 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Personal experience? Oh I could blabble all day about this stuff. Im guessing you dont want to join a gym.Running is the key though. Intensity is important- its hard to push yourself at home inside so my advice is to bite the bullet and go for a run. staying inside and doing a few situps and pushups will do sfa.

running + pushups + situps = hard bod jess

if you REALLY serious and want to get a bit bigger rather than tone... buy a set of dumbells to do extra exercises as pushups dont really hit your back or biceps. buy a protein powder to mix with milk to help muscles grow and recover better(drink it straight after exercising and before you go to sleep), if $$$ is a problem buy normal low fat milk powder+ cocoa and mix it with milk its similar to a protien powder. eat healthy shit, smaller meals throughout the day.

when doing resistance exercise(say a situp) focus on controland on correct form and do the exercise really slowly, really concentrate your mind on the muscles youre working. if you dont go the point where you are hurting or struggling its a waste of time. I normally gain about 10 kgs of muscle over summer for rugby season, but do heavy weights low reps plenty of rest. the tapeworms probably sound like more fun.

Is getting a bicycle an option? That would (at least partially) solve both your exercise and transportation issues.

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 13 October 2002 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i walked the four miles into town tonight. (and then ate a sandwich. oh well.) it's a start. i literally have become a slug over the last 6 months or so (neatly coinciding with my unemployment surprise surprise).

there's a bike in the house but the wheel is flat right now and i can't be arsed to fix it and even if i did it's nancy's and she'd probably want to ride it anyway. besides, i see how people drive around here (despite an excessive number of bikers) and frankly i dont want either of us biking.

nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 13 October 2002 07:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Running and/or jogging is SO BAD for you. It's bad for your knees, your joints, your respiratory system. Take a look at joggers as they sprint by you, and look how OLD they all look. It's not good for you. The human body is designed for short bursts of running, and long periods of walking. However, walk briskly, with long strides, do not amble, or you may damage your back.

kate, Sunday, 13 October 2002 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)
