where EXACTLY does europe end and asia begin?
where EXACTLY does africa end and asia begin?

who decides? what are the criteria for continent-hood? why is life so unfair that you can't invade antarctica in risk?

a) the Urals
b)between Israel/Palestine and Egypt

(I think)

stevo (stevo), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

a) Alaska

Generally speaking the divide involves a swim and the dividing line between continents is usually a difference of eur500 in air fares ! And as for invading antarctica - well who the f@#* would want to do that anyway !

antarctica is rich in minerals (and alien biotechnology)

so is israel in asia? is eurovision but a sham?

Wouldn't it be fun if continental drift were a lot faster? (Aside from all those pesky volcanos and earthquakes.)

Mideast = Asia.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 18 October 2002 09:26 (twenty-three years ago)

is that all of turkey then? and if so what abt cyprus? *starts war*

my dad has a v.ancient dinosaurs-for-kids book which predates the acceptance of the continental drift theory, and so animal movement eg from africa to south america is explained by "land bridges", which are included on the maps...

brontosaurus 1: "let's venture out along this extremely narrow and implausible strip of ground that stretches beyond the horizon!"
brontosaurus 2: "include me out matey!"
brontosaurus 3: "i challenge you in kamchatka!"

Where is the border between Europe and Asia?

Where is the border between Asia and Africa?

Another Israeli anachronism: its football association is part of UEFA and its clubs play in European competition for obvious reasons. Shame, Israel v Iraq would make Celtic v Rangers look like children's picnic.

Yes, why does Israel get to be in the Eurovision Song Contest? Not that I'm complaining, Dana International was hilarious, as well as being reviled by the good ol' folks at home for having bits that God gave 'her' cut off and other attached artificially.

It's probably because having 'friendly' competitions like football tournaments etc. would indeed result in more bloodshed than one could shake a stick at. Nobody wants to play with Israel, so its mum drives it 5000 miles to a special daycare centre where it can indulge its fascist whims at leisure.

I had a boat trip up the Bosphorus on my last holiday, which is considered to be the divider between European Turkey and Asian Turkey. What confuses me is how Europe and Asia are two continents. I know Africa is joined, but only just (like N & S America), so those seem fair enough, but Eurasia is one huge land mass, andI don't understand how it can be two continents. If it's to do with the different histories and racial and cultural developments, I would have thought that Iranians had far more in common with Greece than with China, say.

''who decides?''

the 12ft lizards of course!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 October 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Europe is a peninsula of the Asian continental landmass, much like India is. The "Middle East" is a (perhaps neccessary) fudge a la "Central America".

what about where one ocean stops & another starts? i have a childhood memory of sailing over a place where the sea changed from blue to green & the sailors told me it was the end of one sea & the start of another but they might've been yankin my ankle & anyway the memory is so dim & confused that i can't swear it even happened.
(i have said to 2 difft people in the last week [to the effect of] "man my brain is like swiss cheeze" & they both replied [something like] "can we eat it?)

I thought this thread was going to be about post-structuralism.

one year passes...
This website hasn't been added to in a year and a half. When I went internet-looking for an answer to my question, "Why is Australia a continent and Greenland is not? and What is the criteria for contintent-hood?" I thought I would find the answer here. No, I guess not.

Once I found out that the difference between a pond and a lake was the depth, not the area it occupies. So, why is this answer so elusive?

What a boring website this continental grey areas site is.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Saturday, 10 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Still, what a coincidence that Susan and I have each individually decided to add new content to it on April 10th, 2004.
