"Difficult to break into"

When people say this about careers what do they mean? I mean isn't it just a nice way of saying "this is a creative subject and you might be shit at it".

Actually it's not really a "nice" way either, it's just irritating.

I think it might be not necessarily because of creativity, but because getting certain jobs often involve knowing the right people.

I think they mean you gotta know people and be really confident.

Do you think you need to know the right people? I'm sure it helps but. I think it kind of presumes the person is only attracted to the thing because of some external factor, I always found it a bit irritating like that.

I mean how many people are actually super creative?

That there's a lot of people wanting a small number of jobs, so even if you are very good, you're still unlikely to get anywhere.

I'm just thinking about say writing or something, it doesn't seem difficult, I mean I don't think you even have to be good. There are loads of people getting away with crap writing who aren't even well up on the subject they write about. I don't think you need to be supercreative. Surely the fact that it's more about who you know than what you know makes it easier to break into. If it was all about quality or talent then things would be really difficult. I guess I'm not talking about being a popstar or something, but maybe an actor or that type of job. It just strikes me, with Journalism even, that all the times I was told this were a waste of time and a silly way to do career guidance.

It means you might spend two and a bit years of your life doing some shitty temping job while you try to get the foot in the door that an acquaintance got by living with her parents, rent and bill free, while doing UNPAID work experience for ONE YEAR before getting a paid job. And perhaps you'd be better off doing your own thing, in a small way, and hoping somebody notices.
