Dunedin's tastiest soup

A while ago I misread "Dundee's tastiest hip hop" as "Dunedin's tastiest soup". This got me thinking... where can I find Dunedin's tastiest soup??

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The ones you make yourself are always the nicest. I suggest "your house".

Sarah (starry), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:04 (twenty-three years ago)

haha it's easily Arc's Tomato, Red Wine & Garlic Soup! (they even put the recipe in the Arc(b)eats cookbook!)

there's also some nice creamy kumara soups, too.

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Buuut I don't live in Dunedin so my house doesn't count

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds TASTY!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i make a fine pumpkin soup, so i say my house.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that article would've been more interesting if it actually had been about soup. Who cares what wanky club you can go to to hear "tasty" hiphop? I want YUMMY SOUP.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i will make the soup for you all when i come to ak-city.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

YAY YUMMY SOUP AT LAST! I might try making this great blackbean one I did once. It had sour cream on top, oh it was good.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

yes YUMMY SOUP! I haven't had good pumpkin soup in ages.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Here is a tasty recipe for a soup that you can make with your leftovers. Its call Leftover Soup.

Dice up your leftovers and put into a pot, with 4 large cups of water and an old bone. Bring to the boil and leave to simmer for 10 minutes.

Serve piping hot with buttered toast or crumpets.

gazza, Monday, 21 October 2002 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

can i use vege stock instead of a bone?

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmmmmm leftovers are never as good as SOUP! But now (if this works) I can have soup instead... I need bones though. Does anyone else have recipes?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

if you listen to "maybe i'm amazed" backwards, you'll get a recipe for a ripping lentil soup.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh stock, cool. Ok. If you listen to it forwards it's a pretty good song, so you can't lose.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

everything sounds better backwards.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

you can use an old sock or boot if you dont have a bone and season to taste.

di - Vege stock??? ewwwww!

gazza, Monday, 21 October 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

True. I used to wish my turntable had a "backwards" button.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not a footivore i'm a herbivore. curry powder probbly works better than vege stock anyway.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:58 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, backwardsing by hand is too much like doing stuff.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

plus it'd probably wreck yr records

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:05 (twenty-three years ago)

thats what 50cent bin records are for.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't you use a stone instead of a bone? like in that "Stone Soup" story. Um I forgot.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't do dick wit this shit f'real! I only gots a carrot!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i know what you mean! what the fuck can I do with this turnip??

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

any other recipes? yum yum yum

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey let's make SOUP!!!!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 21 October 2002 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Mm, soup. Its powers must not be denied.

they even put the recipe in the Arc(b)eats cookbook!

Ah, then I'll have to try it out one day!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 October 2002 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

oh how cool, elisabeth remembers "stone soup". wasn't it a play in a school journal?

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 21 October 2002 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it was a whole other publication [maybe by the same folks, though...] - i have a vague feeling it was our Standard 2 production. i was Random Villager #57.

i make a spiffy tomato and red lentil soup, and pumpkin + chickpea, and those stodgy vegetable ones w barley and splitpeas and whatnot. rumour has it that Rainy makes a k-grebt MUSHROOM soup tho!

petra jane (petra jane), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to make a stone soup. I have carrots and onions. I love school journal plays! There are lots of embarrassing pictures of me in school journal plays, in one I'm nearly drowning in a scungy old lab coat.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

but it's summer now! why you talkin' soup now hmm? hmmm? get with the summer vibe please

spectra, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

in today's ODT there is a recipe for Pumpkin and Kumara soup, but i don't like the sound of it.

Petra speaks the truth. Even people who hate mushrooms love my mushroom soup!

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 03:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Rainy i LOVE mushroom soup! except the stuff that comes in cans. The greyness and gelatinous consistency is too petfood-crossed-with-vomit for me to contend with.

Pumpkin and kumura make a great soup, the secret is loads of cumin to take the edge off both vegetables' unnerving sweetness. roasting them first does wonders too.

For spectra's sakem, let's talk about cold soups. Gazpacho [sp?] and borsch [sp again?] and the like - what's up with them anyway? I don't get it.

petra jane (petra jane), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Borsch looks pretty, but everyone knows that beetroot is a mouth error!

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 05:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought there should be more savoury drinks. For example Fizzy Chicken Drinks and Minceshakes.

rainy (rainy), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 05:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Stone Soup used to be my favourite bedtime story! Although actually i think it was some variation of it like Nail Soup, but it was almost as good as the one about the Giant's wife who had to save him and the one about the friendly dragon.

This thread has made me hungry.

Livvie, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

who will help me defend beetroot? the best curry i ever had was a beetroot curry from ananda. i have never had cold soup.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I love beetroot! Also I love soup all year round. When I was a bit younger I thought it'd be great if I JUST ATE SOUP. Ever. Esp. mushroom.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I love soup all year round too. Carrots, red onion, vegetable stock, fresh coriander, sling in a diced potato; simmer, liquidise and stir in some cream and lashings of black pepper.

Hungry now :(

C J (C J), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Despite not being one of the more touted vegetables, and perhaps being overshadowed by the more flamboyant broccoli and cauliflower, beetroot is one of the unsung heros of the vegetable family being a great source of iron and certainly the most colourfull! (although Im not sure about its merits in curry or soup - I mainly eat it in sandwhiches with cheese tomato and lettuce).

gazza, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:34 (twenty-three years ago)

also in a related incident my mother invented Gazpacho while inadvertently calling me late for dinner one evening.

gazza, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I never think of cauliflower as a particularly flamboyant vegetable. I think it's rather anaemic looking.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but have you ever heard of beetroot ears?

gazza, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

So I'm not in Dunedin but I had Pea and Ham soup for lunch and it was lovely, just felt the need to share...

Plinky (Plinky), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I found a place that has $5.50 vege laksa and now I'm going to go there all the time. You get a huge bowl of it, I couldn't finish it. Yum!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Soup is Of the Gods, and mushroom soup a la Rainy sounds very num. There's a ramen place near where I live that is so perfect that clearly the deity saw fit to ensure its existence within easy reach of my dwelling.
