I have used it to describe non blood bodily fluids to dry cleaners, and my mother uses it as a synonym(sp) for egg whites. Where does it come from ?

albumen/albumin=a class of simple, water-soluble proteins that can be coagulated by heat and are found in egg white, blood serum, milk, and many other animal and plant tissues.

from the latin 'albus' meaning 'white.'

I'd like to take this chance to say that the other day a radio announcer had just ended a news segment about stamp collecting (hmmm) and said "philately will get you everywhere" haha.
