Quoted from ESPN. So what do we all think about this man coming out.

Pretty damn cool, I say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Jock fag! says Vice & Momus

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

This has gotta give Kordell Stewart some encouragement...

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

My first thought was, "He played for the Vikings? When?"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Have there been many/any other publicly gay top 'footballers' in America? How about baseball or basketball? In the UK, I think the only one was footballer Justin Fashanu - he was disowned by his brother, another top footballer, treated appallingly by clubs and teammates, slipped down through the leagues then killed himself - not likely to encourage anyone else to come out.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the first athlete from a major sport to come out in the US. And to call this player "top" would be a mistake. He's a nobody.

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

There have been none, Martin, none who came out while still active in the sport.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, didn't you read the article, Yancey? There was another guy who wrote a book about his expereinces being a gay man in the NFL (but of course I don't remember his name and I just read the article 45 minutes ago).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I didn't read the article. I had seen the story from the wire reports, but they hadn't made mention of this fact. Sorry!

Yancey (ystrickler), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Who was that Australian rugby guy who also came out? His name escapes me at the moment.

If you count pro-wrestling as a sport, both Pat Patterson and Steve Lombardi have been out for some time.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

dom, his name was ian roberts. people were great about it here - the overwhelming reaction when roberts came out was polite curiosity (even amongst the notoriously homophobic sports press in australia). there was no hostility at all. it could've had something to do with his prominence in the sport too, i don't know. he's since written an autobiography that's sold squillions, is an in-demand after-dinner speaker and sits on the rugby league's judiciary for on-field misdemeanours. in fact, one could argue that 'coming out' was probably the best career move he ever made.

angelo (angelo), Thursday, 31 October 2002 07:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder what Junior Seau thinks about this ...

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 31 October 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

He's probably thinking, "Damn. He finally upstaged me."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought this thread was gonna be about the rock.

maura (maura), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

He's a nobody.

Didn't he make the probowl?
Of course he's not a star, I can't think of one Nosetackle who was.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Hampton?

Yancey (ystrickler), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Fred Smerlas was the ultimate nosetackle.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Freddy S.
