Happy things to do whilst working

I am sad today (I feel like Anthony saying that).

I have a lot of work to do (not the cause of sadness), but currently I am sitting here typing away smoking cigarette after cigarette and listening to Portishead. I need to stop wallowing.

So, things that you can do whilst working that will make you happy. What makes you happy at work? I work from home, but office/shop/univeristy/hospital/other tales of joy and mirth are all appreciated too.

Hmm, I think replacing the Portishead with something a bit more up beat might do the job. What makes me happy at work is someone telling me I've done a good job. And nicking out in the afternoon to go see a film when I should be working.

"nicking out"?

put something more upbeat on. i've found that i'm way more up for work in the morning when i've been listening to subliminal sessions 2 on the way in than when i've had something downbeat on.

the only fun thing i do at work here is sit in the library listening to dance music and then look up and realise that everyone is staring at me cos i'm dancing along to it in my seat (when i'm thinking my body just does what it wants to; i half suspect that if i'd been born ten years later i'd've been diagnosed with add).

at work in imperial fun things to do = attacking officemates in the corridor, generally behaving like 8 year olds boys, that kind of thing. i miss that kind of atmosphere...

Cheer up Anna.

Yeah, try putting the radio or even the TV on - the suprise element can be more heartening than listening to something you've heard before.

Also, have you tried developing a stalker-like interest in the goings on at he house across from your window?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 31 October 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

(gareth i wish i had something helpful to say - from what i gather i've been in a similar situation to the one yr in before and, yeah, ow.)

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 31 October 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to say "dance" but Toby beat me too it kinda'. If I'm at home working I might dance a bit, there's a great wooden floor where the computer is. Also I plan what I'll do for lunch/dinner after the work is done.

Disclaimer: I am not the boss of you or anyone else.

That said, tackling a work assignment and getting it off one's desk gives me pleasure.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 31 October 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Get away from the PC! If only for a few minutes. Stretch, grab some coffee, wander around the office a bit. Whenever I get stuck in a rut at work, I find that just taking a wee break keeps me fresh. (Probably something to do w/ circulation of the blood & other science.)

If that doesn't work, and it usually doesn't when I'm swamped, I just start taking care of one task, regardless of how I feel, and somehow my malaise is subsumed by the task @ hand, and I reach a state of emotional equilibrium teetering on vague euphoria @ tasks' end.

Posting to ILX while working is the best way to maintain and cultivate a depressive stupor.

why are you sad, anna?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 31 October 2002 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

what makes me happy at 'work' is when an experiment goes well.

I'll second that! It's a very good thing. And I hope you feel better soon, Anna. :-)

I find that just taking a wee break keeps me fresh.

...and your bladder in check.

Gareth I'm sad for sort of similar reasons to you. I sent an e-mail and got a lovely reply and it made me think about how much I missed the person in question coupled with a bit of little-girl foot stamping ("Life's not fair! And I'll scweem and scweem until it is!").
Today I feel better. I finished all my work (good point J.lu)and got on a train back to my mum's house (I was thinking about it anyway) and being looked after and not having to cook and towels that are fluffier than i can afford always works nicely.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

**towels that are fluffier than i can afford**

Isn't that always the BEST bit about going home!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

that and decent pillows.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

and it made me think about how much I missed the person in question

can you not see them more often? you got a lovely reply, thats a good sign isnt it? i get no reply:'(

(email me if you want advice on how to handle it all the wrong way, i know the right way now, because its the polar opposite!)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 1 November 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

eating a Belgian Bun!

(and this has been the most awfully boring week at work I have ever had. Though, I did read a good Sartre quote in the Handbook of Mental Control: "A man is always a teller of stories, he lives surronded by his own stories and those of other people, he sees everything that happens to him in terms of these stories and he tries to live his life as if he were recounting it")

Fun things to do at work that don't involve work:
* Posting to ILX
* Emailing
* Maintaining webpages
* Having a fake band on Zigire
* Creating show fliers
* Looking for new bands to check out (online)
* Searching ebay
* Blogging at Diaryland
