- Criticized JD Vance's views on Catholicism and Jesus
- Posted an article opposing Trump's immigration policies
- Retweeted twice about the Pope's health
- Retweeted a criticism of Trump & Bukele's laughter at KAG.

This NYT article from last week (gift link) has someone calling him a "dignified middle of the road."

Apparently "middle of the road" = he's done some rhetorical gay-bashing in the past and been accused of papering over sex-abuse cases. But he was close to Francis and clearly shares at least some of his foundational views, so it's not some hard right turn.

Fangraphs has been killing it this week on a number of topics and their piece about the Pope is no different:

The pope of my youth, John Paul II, was a serene, austere cleric from a faraway land, who’d faced off against dictators and survived assassins. Leo XIV has lived his life as a guy named Bob from Illinois, who taught high school for a while and did missionary work in Peru. He went to Villanova, and retweeted a post about Kris Jenkins’ buzzer beater to win the national championship in 2016. I know people like this, and now one of them is one of the most revered and influential people on the planet.

So, bearing in mind a near majority of people itt will likely be unaware of just how historically, obscenely bad the 2024 Chicago White Sox were…

On September 27, the White Sox lost their 121st game of the season, losing to the Tigers, surpassing the 1962 Mets for the most losses in modern MLB history.

For those of you who don’t know, that’s a win-loss record of 41-121. Yeah.

No single account so gleefully covered the 2024 White Sox historical stoked-for-the-badness sheer awfulness quite like Southside Behavior. When the Pope was revealed to be a White Sox fan, he got seamlessly incorporated into the lore: https://streamable.com/e3rokb

Anyway, Fangraphs did some work on determining the sports fandom of previous Popes and their effect on the success or failure of those teams:

On the one hand, Cracovia had more wins and more points in fewer games after the pope’s death than before. But on the other hand, Cracovia’s goal differential was worse; four of those seven wins came by a single goal. If anything, that suggests more favorable bounces of the ball after the death of John Paul II than before. Perhaps, once relieved of the considerable burdens of leading the Church, John Paul II’s spirit was free to intercede in the fortunes of his favorite soccer team.

Truly an incredible piece.

"Bacon" as ILX slang originated on the 77 thread "hay guys ZOMBIES and MUSTACHES and BACON right hahahahahahahah," which was started in 2012.

Because of those three things in the thread title, I sometimes think of "bacon" as things that appeal to a certain set of nerd-bro types who are into Reddit or (back then) The Chive. But it need not be restricted to that particular subculture.

Daniel's definition is pretty good. There's also sort of a "jump the shark" aspect to it: Baconing happens when so many people think they're being cool or clever by being into a particular thing that it starts to become cringe. Once that thing makes it onto t-shirts and greeting cards, it's bacon.

“White Sox or Cubs?”

Those were the first words out of Pope Leo XIV’s mouth when he greeted Jason Perash in a receiving line at the Vatican’s Paul VI Audience Hall Monday morning.

“Uh, Sox,” answered Perash, a 46-year-old attorney and sometimes freelance journalist who presented the new pontiff with a Rawlings Official Major League Baseball and asked him to sign it.
