We quietly rule and will own your children someday. Discuss. All of you who are still in college eat our people's food at least once a week. Holla to all my Chinks.

Chinese culture, art and history: Awesome. Chinese government: Currently anything but.

Ah, thanks Jimmy. Ya bastard. ;-)

Chinese food makes me sick.

I remember a man, who jumped out from a window over the bay. There was hardly a raised eyebrow! The coroner told me, "This kind of thing happens everyday." You see, from the pagoda the world seems so tiny.

I like vegetable dumplings. Yin Cheng makes some really good ones.

While I don't want to condone the current Chinese government in any way, shape or form, I do think it has to be understood that for the past 200 years or so the Chinese haven't had any particularly good governments. Until the twentieth century, they were run by an incredibly corrupt, reactionary and/or incompetent monarchy (the Empress Dowager, whose name escapes me now, was an incredible bitch and a fascinating read). After the monarchy fell, the country pretty much degenerated into chaos with different regions being run by warlords. Then there was the brutal Japanese occupation. Plus, considering the considerable amount of ethnic, regional, economic and religious diversity within China (not just the Tibetans, but the differences between the countryside and the cities) there's a real concern that China might slip into chaos if some sort of order isn't maintained. Again, I'm not trying to excuse Mao or his successors, but they have brought a certain amount of order and economic prosperity that their predecessors didn't.

Cultural Revolution = Classic! For the way they dealt with the running-dog lackeys of the revisionist capitalist roaders. Also classic for being the only so-called Marxists with the balls to stand up for the Khmer Rouge.

Mao's astonishing hold over the people was truly one of the best stories of the 20th Century. Everyone shoot sparrows! OK! Everyone blow up moutains to make useless roads! OK! Everyone attack their teachers! OK! Everyone bring down all tiers of goverment below me! OK!

Chopsticks are so classic. Think about it! What a magnificent idea!

I'd like to know more about china.

specifically about their relationship with japan and, more importantly, with japanese.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 1 October 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The Chinese are still pretty annoyed (and extremely distrustful) with the Japanese about the whole "genocide"-ish thing during the 30s and 40s. This won't prevent business, but it will prevent any kind of EU-like trade sphere.

WTF is going on with people trying to kill kids in China this week? Is there some kind of orchestrated campaign or are dudes just going the same type of mental all at once?

it's what happens when you have a billion people and no jobs imo

I Think Ur a Viking (dyao), Friday, 30 April 2010 11:37 (sixteen years ago)

hell of a way to pass the time.

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Friday, 30 April 2010 11:41 (sixteen years ago)

anyway, i don't see a very clear link there- nothing goin on today, might butcher a kindergarten, ho-hum?

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Friday, 30 April 2010 11:42 (sixteen years ago)

chinese society is pretty patriarchal - chinese men are still expected to be the breadwinners of the family 99% of the time

I Think Ur a Viking (dyao), Friday, 30 April 2010 11:47 (sixteen years ago)

i'm irish btw

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Friday, 30 April 2010 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

lol I dunno anything about irish families. all I know is that this seems to be a pretty common trope among chinese men. my dad knocked on our neighbor's door with a cleaver in his hand cause he wasn't able to stand being needled by my mom over not doing anything to stop our neighbors from singing karaoke at 1 AM in the morning.

I Think Ur a Viking (dyao), Friday, 30 April 2010 11:55 (sixteen years ago)

well, see, that's not in any way a cultural thing- i would definitely get behind that.

ireland is less patriarchal than once was the case, but i mean 'once' = 20 years ago so it's hardly ancient history

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Friday, 30 April 2010 11:57 (sixteen years ago)

When you have 1 billion people, everything conceivable happens. If it seems like a small trend there is probably copycatting going on among a subset of Chinese mentalists (which is common enough in the west, too).
