Anyone know anyone good to eat/party in San Francisco for New Years Eve/Week?

I'm going to be there for a week over the new year, and I'd appreciate any advice!

What do you want to eat? What kind of scene are you looking for?

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 8 December 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pretty open-minded on both counts, Sean. But anything that reminds me that I'm in San Francisco and not freezing my ass off in London would be great.

I would like to now resurrect this thread in the hope that someone (Sean??) will give me some honest-to-god genuine advice.

I'm actually there for a week because I am hoping to move there at the end of next year. So I want to check out areas to live, eat good food, buy records, see bands, watch movies-all the stuff I would do if I was living there.

I have heard enough about the fact that it is hideously expensive and the Northwest is better, etc, etc. So...

My two favorite upscale restaurants are Boulevard in the Embardcadero and Delfina in the Mission. You can find a good curry if you get homesick at Shalomar in the Tenderloin. Head over to Berkeley for record shops, I would suggest, for Amoeba and Rasputin and Mod Lang. Also the East Bay has better movie houses, IMHO. (See another thread here somewhere on the East Bay -vs- SF battle). Online resources include craigslist.org and sfstation.com.

Oh, and be sure to visit Alcatraz. :)

Sorry... I really need you to narrow it down; there's so much here. I agree with Colin about Boulevard... my fave is Jardiniere in Hayes Valley. But if you don't want upscale, i'll cut my list short. I'm hoping you can spring for upscale, because I'm thinking SF does that a lot better than bohemian or whatever these days.

Thanks, guys. Well..upscale? Why not? It's new year's right? If it's really so much better at the end of things, I will stretch to it. If you need me to eliminate stuff-no seafood! :) Yes, I know it's probably fishy valhalla if you love that kind of thing, but, errr. I don't. What's this Foreign Cinema restaurant (sean?)-sounds like it could be

A)great
B)A pretentious mess

Anywhere to eat with a great view?
And what part of town to drink (upscale OR downscale) and shop in? Last time I was there it was the Mission for drinking, and North Beach. Any good places that have sprung up in the last two or three years?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 15 December 2002 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

If you want an upscale place with a great view to drink in on New Year's Eve, go to Top of the Mark.

If you've done the Mission bars and want to check out some more dives, let me recommend the Tenderloin.

If you're clothes shopping, Union Square does have it all; the open space in the middle just got a $15M makover.

Skip Fisherman's Warf.

If your wallet is now taxed but you want to eat at a classy looking place with deceht food, Bruno's in the Mission is swank. Live music every night in the bar.

If you've never ridden a cable car, just do it.

I'll post more as I think of it.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 16 December 2002 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Donut, I'm in town that weekend; let me know if you want to try and round up the ususal suspects.
