pop music: where you are at, not where you are?

since living in england for a year and hooking up with sophie i have noticed that i have been listening to alot of soul and pop music then before. i find myself having discussions of so solid crew and britney spears, etc, with her doctor brother.

i myself, love ms. dynamite, lisa left eye lopez, sugababes, mary j blige, truth hurts, etc.....something i would have found ridiculous a year ago, prefering the ironic take on such music. or simply, old soul.

is it the country that is doing it too me? or sophie?

or was it the moments when she put on block party, freak like me and pure and simple and i had to agree, that it was a thousand times more exciting than listening to oasis.

as well, i find myself, getting cds for her and i: moloka, the new sugababes, missy, tlc....

all guilty pleasures before i moved to england, now suggestions for playing at parties i attend.

hmmm...unlikely, but who has been telling you my plans for world domination! nah, i've been meeting alot of people lately, yeah, that are 'captains of pop industry' but they are flakey because they can be flakey! thus nobody got back to me before i am to jet off for fabulous vacation.... : - (

you can't will yourself into world domination.....

i find myself arguing for the merits of kym's solo career....more than talking about mogwai.

it's OK to like pop music in britain. this is one of the reasons that i love living here. you CAN have serious, intellectual discussions about bubblegum without being looked at askance. it's not the NOTHING BUT PURE STEAMING SOLID SLABS OF ROCK N ROLL OR YOU FUCKING SUCK attitude that i used to get in NYC all the time where even something as far pop as Blur was dismissed (except by the weird anglophile kids.)

you know, i love rock n roll, but i've got my smash hits love of melody that i can never shake. (why is britney spears version of ILRNR not better than it is? this should be the best song ever, and it so far from that it is laughable.)

my musical tastes often form in *reaction* to what is around me. when i was at art school, and everyone raved about the velvet underground nonstop, i used to play guns n roses to piss them off. when i moved to NYC and swanned around the lower east side pretending to be in the VU, I would drive them nuts by playing duran duran. i come to ILM and everyone is a chartpopist, it makes me feel OK about loving the velvets again.

hooray for everything. nothing is forbidden, everything is great. i love my life. and did i mention we're in vogue?
