Things that hippie stoners might find "beautiful" or "amazing"

Inspired by the conversation I just heard in my office which went something like...

"Woooooow did you juust see the sunset? It was so beautiful! It was just over that building! It was amazing!"

What other things would hippie/stoner types find worth marvelling over?

Aaron W, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I find nearly every aspect of the Universe beautiful and amazing.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The Wye Valley, maybe :) ?

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

There was this great sunset last week, the sun was setting behind a storm cloud and everything was bathed in an orange glow. I also like rainbows, and fast moving clouds on moonless nights.

I'm not a hippy or a stoner.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I like all that stuff too, BUT I was posting in specific response to the hippie/stoner kids with patchwork skirts in my office who found it really, really, REALLLY amazing. Just curious what else they might really like?

Aaron W, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Assorted Doors chord progressions.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

me to an old hippie-stoner friend: "I find it hard to react to a piece of nature or climate without analysing it."

I'm not ashamed to say I envied him like hell when I was writing that. I over-intellectualise a lot of things that don't need to be treated in such a way, but then that is a natural consequence of my age: the hippies grew up in the security of post-war society, and the Brit-ruralist wing of the movement at least owed FAR FAR more to its cultural patchwork than the old establishment has ever been prepared to admit, but my generation grew up without certainties, so of course we'll always QUESTION things, and we'll find it harder to lose ourselves in sheer beauty without trying to analyse what it might mean.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure analysis is really the thing: I've never known stoners who didn't deconstruct everything in sight, spending hours and hours turning a question like "where did you put the cookies" into convoluted discussions of theoretical physics and particularly epistemology. (My friend M had a particularly good take on Schrodinger's Cat via his response to the presence of (potentially) moldy white bread in his refrigerator.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

But I guess I've never really spent time with "whoah, check out that ferret" type stoners, so nevermind.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Ugh! Little wood carvings and that part in The Wall where the cartoon flowers have sex.

Genevieve, Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco you are very right: my friend is of the "check out that ferret" ilk (or variation thereof)

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

At a party once, a bunch of hippies were staring at refracting disk that , when spun, created swirly colors. A pretty hippie girl asked me if I thought it was cool. I responded "It's just stupid fucking piece of metal". Then she laughed because she thought my comment was, in her words, "so awesome".

cprek, Thursday, 12 December 2002 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey! I like that part in The Wall where the cartoon flowers have sex!

Can I ask, by the way, whether people here use the word "stoner" to mean "people who smoke a lot of pot" or "specific people who smoke a lot of pot and behave in certain annoying ways associated with people who smoke a lot of pot?" Cause that second type exists, oh boy does it exist, even lots of people who don't smoke pot at all act that way, but then on thread like this I always want to poke my head in and make sure everyone knows that not all or maybe not even most people who smoke a lot act that way. It's just that you don't realize if they smoke or not, because they act basically normal.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 12 December 2002 07:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"hey, did you ever notice that flowers have all these colors in 'em, even when it seems like they're just one color? and the number of petals, it's got something to do with math, something called 'fibonacci'. i'm not sure what this is, but...god, isn't nature beautiful?"

"i keep trying to put tracing paper on the floor, to trace out the pattern, but it never works. but i can see it in my head! and that's what gets me, man!"

"dude, have i ever told you about the utterly cosmic fractal geometry of the mandelbrot set? hey, check out my fractal tattoos!"

I took my pill at eleven. An hour and a half later, I was sitting in my study, looking intently at a small glass vase. The vase contained only three flowers-a full-blown Belie of Portugal rose, shell pink with a hint at every petal's base of a hotter, flamier hue; a large magenta and cream-colored carnation; and, pale purple at the end of its broken stalk, the bold heraldic blossom of an iris. Fortuitous and provisional, the little nosegay broke all the rules of traditional good taste. At breakfast that morning I had been struck by the lively dissonance of its colors. But that was no longer the point. I was not looking now at an unusual flower arrangement. I was seeing what Adam had seen on the morning of his creation-the miracle, moment by moment, of naked existence.

"Is it agreeable?" somebody asked. (During this Part of the experiment, all conversations were recorded on a dictating machine, and it has been possible for me to refresh my memory of what was said.)

"Neither agreeable nor disagreeable," I answered. "it just is."

"Wow, man, that 20-minute version of 'You Enjoy Myself', where Trey was all like just wailing on that ONE NOTE for, like, ETERNITY...that was AMAZING man!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with nabisco that you don't have to be a stoner to smoke lots of weed, nor indeed vice versa. When amongst the true stoners of my aquaintance I just feel like shouting 'right, and the fucking sunset wasn't beautiful and amazing BEFORE you deigned to look at it with your little red-rimmed eyes and made some bleeding obvious comment?'

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, after some careful thought, THIS THREAD is beautiful!!

Aaron W, Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
I'm definitely the philosopher type, not the appreciation type.
I was sitting in a friend's bedroom the other day, totally
blued, when I noticed a green play-doh mushroom that was starting
to melt into an indistinguishable mass.
I immediately realized that this was a metaphor for mankind's
"broken and frazzled hopes."
Then yesterday I had a discussion with someone over the
impending war in Iraq. I was starting to express my opinion
more cogently than ever before, when suddenly I was struck
speechless - someone had picked up a guitar and started
playing "Stairway To Heaven" - it was unspeakably beautiful,
the notes shimmering and flowing through the room like a
soft golden haze. And this coming from someone who prefers
four songs to "Stairway" on LZIV alone.

Squirrel, that story kicks ass.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 7 March 2003 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Come to think of it, the character in American Beauty that was obsessed with the plastic bag blowing in the wind was a stoner. At least he had an excuse.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 7 March 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

when i was a kid, and used to take acid a lot, i was coming down once after a trip out in the park and I went to sit in my lounge. My mum came in and started to talk to me (oh good god no!) She and my dad had been away for the day to some old heritage house and she was showing me a brochure of where they had been.
On one of the pages was a picture of a room with a door half open and a violin hanging on the door. I looked at it closer and noticed that it was actually a 'painting' of a violin on a door.

In my *still slightly* receptical state I started shouting "Oh man look at that! How fucking cool is that ! Oh wow!".

God knows what my mum thought about me at that point. (3 years later I admitted to her about every single drug that I had taken)

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 7 March 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Going from my old copies ov "Oz" magazine, what hippie st0n0rz ov an earlier generation found "beautiful" (maan) was:

1/ hippie chix0r w/no clothes on.

2/ bad knockoff ov Alphonse Mucha artwork (poss even direct copy ov A Mucha, but re-coloured horribly)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 7 March 2003 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Things I have found "beautiful" or "amazing" (I am a hippie stoner, I will not try to hide it any longer) that non-hippy non-stoners might not appreciate in quite the same way...

*rainbows in oil spills in parking lots
*rain and lightning
*various valleys in the Big South Fork and Red River Gorge
*Cibo Matto's "Clouds"
*a gypsy-dance performance
*video feedback
*audio feedback
*the strings channel on the Crumar Performer synth
*bluegrass jams
*clothing material that shimmers
*blown glass contraband
*city skylines
