RJG (RJG), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought departure was on Sunday ....?

Maybe I have picked up the wrong end of the stick.

I wish you a fun Christmas & New Year anyway. Don't bring any beetles back though!

Mooro (Mooro), Thursday, 12 December 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope this trip results in an article to match the breadth and scope of that 'When I Went to CBGBs' one that I remember from the past.

All the best, etc.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 12 December 2002 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I have been updating Flighttracker every thirty minutes, and Jerry the N. has just landed in Atlanta. I hope he gets some fried chicken while he's out there!

Mandee, Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

and Pinefox, are you implying I look like Ralph Bellamy? He played Matlock, didn't he? I resemble that statement.

Mandee, Thursday, 12 December 2002 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Fried chicken. Atlanta. I'm excited.

London feels as xmassy as The Catcher In The Rye this afternoon.

the pinefox, Friday, 13 December 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Glasgow has bells!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 16 December 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

yes. all the best.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 16 December 2002 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

What's JtN's itinerary? What is "the new show"? So mysterious!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 16 December 2002 06:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Glasgow has a skating rink. I saw it on the Daily Record webcam.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 16 December 2002 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Next to the skating rink is a of Scott(?) with a big red bow-tie of lights!

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

a statue of Scott, oops.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall zoom in with the webcam.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

it is scott. I think he asked to face south.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I have taken out the time to make several pie charts for JtN's visit. Yesterday we celebraided his birthday in style at Casa Bonita!

Mandee, Monday, 16 December 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Jerry The Nipper in french plaits. What a vision.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Jerry The Nipper with spanish plates. etc.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Tell us about the weather where JtN is.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never been there at this time of year.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Say 'Milwaukee'.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It's disappointingly non-snowy (disappointing for JtN, not for me.. snow=blech). But, there is supposedly going to be heaps of snow for Christmas.

mandee, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

When is he visiting me?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

when hell, michigan freezes over.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

How is he handling the smell, Mandee?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I met Mandee and she didn't smell much. What do you mean?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

('Much'???)

the pinefox, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't the smelly joke sooo last year, Nitsuh?

Mandee, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

(It's smelly-joke retro, Mandee: the more you protest the more I'm gonna do it.) (Nick: Mandee comes from a smelly town.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

(Yeah that's right I said it.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

greeley?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Greeley deffo smells. But JtN is in Denver, so therefore, is safe from the stench.

Mandee, Tuesday, 17 December 2002 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

You're living in the past, man. Should we all stand in George Square and wave to Peter? On the off-chance.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Glasgow has a skating rink. I saw it on the Daily Record webcam.

Its a bit like this

Maybe you could draw a seasonal message on the ice with skates that would show up on the webcam.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything you snow is wrong
Wrapped in my French army arctic parka, I step off the plane into the Mile High city, anticipating the icy crunch of mountain snow beneath my burgundy loafers. But Denver is basking in brilliant sunshine, 64f temperatures and crisp cloudless skies all the way to the looming Rockies – Denverites are in shorts and t-shirts. Bellamy and I sip grande lattes in shades by pavement cafes and smoke Gauloises blondes legeres.

Roxanne – you don’t have to bring me a breadknife
The best place to eat in Denver is just off the interstate, alongside one of the city’s many fine strip joints. In the Breakfast King, waitress Roxy brings Bellamy and I free pancakes just because she likes my accent. ‘Is it winter in London right now?’ she asks, before insisting we visit several outstanding examples of Coloradan Christmas house decoration. The omelettes are outstanding.

Vintage violins
Bellamy introduces Kate and I to the secondhand clothes, furniture and book shops threaded like pearls along the string of lower Broadway, just past the grand Mayan cinema. One afternoon stroll ends with me weighed down with: 1 pair sandy suede crepe-soled loafers; 1 copy of ‘The Moviegoer’ by Walker Percy; 1 copy of ‘Desert Eyes’ by David Thomson; 1 tweed Pendleton winter coat which renders me quite the dandy.

33
On the sad occasion of my birthday, Bellamy and I visit the Denver zoo and meet a giraffe handler who supports Spurs. Later we visit Casa Bonita, a towering palace of Hispanic kitsch nestled between a liquor store and a video shop, where gorillas dive from cliffs and a mariachi band sing me happy birthday while we eat melted Kraft single tortillas. The evening ends with Julianne Moore waving goodbye to the Detroit train in ‘Far from Heaven’.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

(Now, other visions present themselves, those of the P F in ecstasis)

Mooro (Mooro), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

The Moviegoer is an excellent book! The Pinefox might have been even more excited by a giraffe that supported Spurs. Think of the advantage on high crosses!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, right. I thought there was a scott walker=walker percy joke. maybe there should be.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you once called ME a giraffe, Martin. But thankfully not a Spurs supporter.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Moore: everything you snow is right. I read that in increasing shades of disbelief. Best Nipper post ever, surely.

I mean,

>>> ‘Is it winter in London right now?’

!!!

>>> ‘The Moviegoer’ by Walker Percy

!!!!

>>> 1 copy of ‘Desert Eyes’ by David Thomson

!!!!!
>>> giraffe handler who supports Spurs.

!!!!!!

You know, I'm starting to think he's writing from Richmond.

"(though I write from New York)" -- Myles na gCopaleen, c.1947

the pinefox, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

(I am waiting for the post where Jerry wanders out to Boulder, has a revelation in front of the Circle K, and abandons his career to grow dreadlocks, sell homemade acid, and play a digeridoo all day at the Pearl Street Mall.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

That happened on Monday, Nitsuh.

Mandee, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you once called ME a giraffe, Martin. But thankfully not a Spurs supporter.

No Doc, I really like you, I wouldn't call you that! Of my oldest friends, two of the very best of them (including Andrew L) are Arsenal fans, and none Spurs; of my wider circle of long-time pals and acquaintances, the one I really dislike is a Spurs fan. Obviously The Pinefox is gradually acting as a large corrective to this bad impression...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I support Spurs too but no one knows about it. But you might hate me so that might not help.

I don't think it's that odd asking if it's winter in London right now.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Burgundy loafers?

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 19 December 2002 09:43 (twenty-three years ago)

burGUNDY.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 19 December 2002 09:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Have I been pencilled in yet?

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I am OTM.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i miss the sun in denver, the sun never shines in michigan in december.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I have made my feelings about your cheekbones all too disturbingly clear, Nick. More evidence that Spurs are not evil. (Actually I don't dislike any team except, obviously, Bristol City.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

F*ck Denver, let's George Square! Here's the webcam, with a picture of a nice young man alongside:
http://www.gcal.ac.uk/international/georgesq.htm
The white bit in the middle is the skating rink. If you squint really hard, you can see that everyone's having fun.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I dreamt about Jerry & The Pinefox last night. I complained that burglars had stolen all of my silverware and they just talked about a Russian author I didn't know of. But then, ThePinefox told me about his skiing adventures.

Merry Christmas!

Genevieve, Friday, 20 December 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely best thread revival EVER.

the pinefox, Friday, 20 December 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Burglars = reference to this year's hamburglar debate? OR aome kind of latent symbolism. YOU decide.

Russian author = Gene Kelly, multi-vol. biog. by Joseph Frank, demonstrating links between Dostoevsky and the Hollywood / Broadway musical form; reviewed by Michael Wood [in alternate universe]

Skiing = now I'm lost. Pinefox in the snow?

the pinefox, Friday, 20 December 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Pinefox on skis makes me think of Bambi on ice

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

can someone change the title of this thread so it has "(SPOILERS)" added.

dwh (dwh), Friday, 20 December 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"(GO-FASTER STRIPES)"

RJG (RJG), Friday, 20 December 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

My Dad's in love with JtN. Also, Keith--you still up for a FAP when you get back from Mitchigan?

Mandee, Friday, 20 December 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Who is spoiling this thread? I have a feeling that it's me.

Hi Genevieve! Merry X-mas!

Mandee, Friday, 20 December 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to hear more about my latest rival for JtN's affections, and whether JtN is succumbing to his blandishments.

the pinefox, Friday, 20 December 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I think The Pinefox had a special skiing-machine that simulated skiing without the actual danger. Still, I was pleased.

I am trying to finish last essay (Huck Finn/Emerson/Scarlet Letter/Fanny Fern/Anne Bradstreet/Jonathan Edwards/Whitman) of the semester so I would like to hear more Mandee/Nipper adventures to uplift me.

Genevieve, Friday, 20 December 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds like an awfully long essay.

Actually, the Nipper probably has some good tips, most likely on Transcendentalism.

the pinefox, Friday, 20 December 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

More JTNUSTC2002 updates to come later today (and if you are LUCKY, thoughts on transcendentalism). IN THE MEAN TIME, I have discoverd I have left all my addresses in London, so could anyone who would like a postcard please email their details to [email protected]

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 20 December 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Last night JtN, myself, Nicole Holder, and Kex Wright all tried to attend a performance of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" but decided to try our hands at punk bowling instead. Went to the bowling alley and discovered only a couple of lonely punks who informed us that the punk bowling night had been moved to Wednesdays instead of Thursdays. So, we drove to a dive bar called Gabor's that was playing a lot of emo music, but we decided that was a bad idea and went to an apartment where I fell asleep with a raspberry stoli and lemonade in my hand.

Mandee, Friday, 20 December 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I knew the Nipper had been led astray - his thoughts on Transcendentalism never came.

Meanwhile, how about this?

the pinefox, Monday, 23 December 2002 09:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm, I don't think that works. I suppose it would be kind of surprising if it did.

Where on earth do people get all those random letters and numbers from anyway? It is almost unthinkable.

But this ought to do it:

http://www.meredy.com/bellamytriv.htm

the pinefox, Monday, 23 December 2002 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

ralph bellamy isn't andy griffiths.

someone here is insane.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 23 December 2002 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

It ain't me.

Mandee, Monday, 23 December 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Nipper to thread? I think it's time for an update.

Mandee, Monday, 23 December 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

It sure is. Did JtN survive xmas?

the pinefox, Monday, 30 December 2002 12:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Evidently not.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 7 January 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ralph Emerson showed and announced that he could not say the word eye anymore. Boys talked to boys and girls talked to girls. No one could find Waldo. Jon Edwards warned that our foot would slip in due time. "Cherry Bomb" played on the jukebox.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 7 January 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

He survived, PF.. don't you worry!

Mandee (keckles), Sunday, 12 January 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

JtN was with us last night, and the Pinefox was clearly pleased to see him, as were we all of course.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 January 2003 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

(can someone else do the something in his pocket joke? I'm not feeling pervy enough)

Graham (graham), Sunday, 12 January 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)
