Oh dear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha. I'd like to see Gary Neville "shank" the ball. My brother once tried to convince me that in the MLS, a goal is worth more "goals" the further out it is scored from... :)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i like how americans and australians would say "manchester utd is..." rather than "manchester utd are...".

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the same with bands

"Aerosmith is playing..."

In America, groups of people are more than the sum of their parts.

And they stress the first word in a band name, for example "PEARL jam", whereas English people tend to say "Pearl JAM".

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Losing to an American side? Can't be more embarrassing than losing to city.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello Beau,

Read your 'Manchester United ducks the real competition' article with interest, but I must say I feel you have missed the point somewhat; Man Utd are not going to the States solely to test their mettle against the finest European clubs there are, nor are they going over to see how far American soccer has progressed (indeed, they're not going to play them at all, as you have pointed out); in fact, the whole exercise is one of market penetration.

And the use of a marketing term is entirely accurate, for that is all the trip over is. In the same way that the club usually embarks on an Eastern tour to make sure their big red trademark is bludgeoned across the world, they have deemed it time to send their troops over to exact the same branding on the States. I doubt they give two hoots about the state of the US game, healthy or not, they just want its dollar. The reason why they are playing the likes of Barcelona and Celtic et all is because they too want to imprint their brand on the consciousness of the nation.

Aside from that, I'm assuming that certain remarks that you made were done with tongue planted firmly in cheek. "Ruud van Nistelrooy knows he can't put any shots past Kevin Hartman and Adin Brown." was a particularly mirth inducing effort. Equally, I am sorry to inform you that there aren't too many "second-rate Scandinavian goalkeepers" left in the English top-flight game. Indeed, we have Americans (The already mentioned-by you Brad Friedal, the highly underrated Kasey Keller), Poles, French, Finns (no, they're not Scandanavians) Australians and Italians, and even a smattering of English (lets not talk about the pony-tailed lumbering mishap that is David Seaman).

And while you claim "the Neville brothers would rather shank the ball into the third row 20 times a game than try to contain Carlos Ruiz or Taylor Twellman in a preseason game", I feel it entirely necessary to report that Sir (yes, it is rather silly) Alex Ferguson has not needed to field the feckless Neville brothers on the flanks for sometime, usually because he has no desire to intentionally lost games.

"Can you imagine the headlines if Manchester United made a Beatles-style landing in New York and then lost to the MetroStars?"

Um, frankly no. I'm sure England will be losing to a far superior cricketing nation at the time, thusly sweeping all mention off the back covers of our newspapers. Or maybe no-one will give a damn, cos its a pre season.

Still, we do remember the finest American players to have graced British football with some fondness; John Harkes, Cobi Jones and erm, Joe Max-Moore. Actually...

That DaMarcus Beesley is alright. And Jeff Agoos' own goal at the World Cup was amazing....

anyway,

thanks for listening,

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 13 December 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

And the best thing is... he responded!

I'm still laughing over the "pony-tailed lumbering mishap." Funny stream of e-mail I've been getting -- I hear from abusive Americans in the evening and witty Englishmen in the morning.

Yes, it's all marketing. I know. But it SHOULD be about the players from time to time. (Speaking of which, you'd be amazed by all the e-mail I've received telling me the Neville brothers are the finest defenders ever to grace the Earth.)

Beasley is a tremendous player with skills that would never have occurred to previous generations of U.S. players. (I wrote about him here: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/soccer/dure/2002-05-12-dure.htm). Poor Agoos -- so many years of waiting and reviving his game beautifully in 2001, and then he makes a mess of it when he finally gets on the field in the World Cup.

Finally, England can only blame itself for not picking Mark Ramprakash.

Thanks for writing,

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 13 December 2002 10:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, the Neville revival is well and truly underway. And the only reason Phil Neville isn't gracing the flanks is because he's too busy outclassing Patrick Viera in the centre of midfield. (Never thought I'd ever utter that particular sentence.)

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 13 December 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to know what the abusive Americans have been saying...

Probably Garry Neville roxx ur r gay.

I don't really understand what the first part of the thread has to do with San Jose but I grew up there so I thought I should stop by and say hi.
