this is a thread concerning my recent rediscovery of INSTANT OATMEAL

I had some instant Cinnamon Raisin oatmeal sitting around in the pantry, just about to hit its expiration date, so I finally had it. Tossed on some extra cinnamon and brown sugar, decorated the plate with a couple squirts of Reddi Whip, and YUM!

This is my new favorite breakfast food.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Like an IHOP meal without the pancakes (not necessarily a criticism).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 December 2002 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

That's me, a one-woman IHOP.

Instant-schminstant

Instant mashed potato with pesto

Findus crispy pancakes with asparagus tips

Reasons I rarely cook for other people.

Like Iron Chef, but the secret ingredient is always something instant.

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I just discovered instant cream of wheat! Good, but $4.99 for a 10 pack.

RediWhip? Oatmeal? Woah there.

Nah, I can't say shit, I've made bacon/egg sammiches with pancakes as the bread. ("eek" face emoticon goes here)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I had this rediscovery too after stealing some of my roommate's! CINNAMON ROLL OATMEAL is the best.

(I initially typed OATMETAL, which will be the next heavy music genre).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

granola hippy jam-bands + gut-wrenching metal = OATMETAL

"Woah, man, they totally ripped out a 75 minute version of 'Reign of Blood'!!!! I smoked the phattest d00b and watched, like, forty people DIE in the pit!" He then raises a piece sign and a metal pinky--index-finger sign simultaneously.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

nick is otm.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

i love instant oatmeal, made with milk but not too much, with chocolate chips on top. yum.

GET EQUIPPED WITH DINO EGG (ex machina), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

It's much better for you if you make it properly, the instant stuff gets broken down much quicker, and so doesn't keep you feeling as full for as long. Doesn't taste as good either.

We bought some steel cut oats, now that makes serious porridge, but also takes 30 mins to make

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I love muesli with yoghurt and maple syrup. Is that the same? I mean, what the hell's oatmeal? *off to google it* Eh, seems a bit too *porridgy* for my liking. I'll stick with my maple-yogo-muesli thanks.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

what is oatmeal? is oatmeal an american thang?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

DESTROY: "irish oatmeal" (bleh)

i genuinely bought it at first because of the comedy name. but it turned out to be lovely.

Holy fucking shit! You're the guy who invented the McGriddle! That is so cool!

omg, Friday, 9 December 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

I recently rekindled my love for porridge/oatmeal/mush, whatever. We use rolled oats. Nice nutty flavor. I don't like the flavored ones, too sweet, icky tasting.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 9 December 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

i rediscovered oatmeal last fall - so yum! i am big on honey nut right now. however, kashi's oatmeal, while fibrous and soy-packed, is not nearly as tasty as quaker's.

tres letraj (tehresa), Friday, 9 December 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

There's a kind of oatmeal that comes in a red box that is very good. I need to get a small saucepan so I can eat oatmeal. Microwaving doesn't work so well because it expands and the texture isn't right. I got Kashi cereal for the first time and I like it. It's the kind with clusters. I actually have to let it sit in milk for a while because it is so crunchy.

youn, Friday, 9 December 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

i love the cereal! the oatmeal is just a little meh.

tres letraj (tehresa), Friday, 9 December 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

for some reason i thought alexinnyc started this thread. also points to a modest nicka for inventing the mcgriddle.

howell huser (chaki), Friday, 9 December 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Whenever you see a post from me that's made around 1400 GMT, chances are great that I have a bowl of instant oatmeal in front me.

If the post is from 0500 GMT, it's probably an ice cold Miller High Life.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 9 December 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

the kashi oat/soy cluster whatever... good stuff. i have a couple of economy-sized boxes that i got from costco but i keep forgetting to buy milk!

thor heyerdahl (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 9 December 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

probably the golean crunch. soooo good. eat it with yogurt - it's way better than with milk!!

tres letraj (tehresa), Friday, 9 December 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

if i seem excited about the kashi, it's because i'm insane. i once drunkly lectured someone on the awesomeness of kashi for fifteen minutes.

tres letraj (tehresa), Friday, 9 December 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

i've had it with yogurt too, good call. i'll pick some up next time i'm at the sto'.

"Smart Balance Omega" instant oatmeal tastes like BUGSPRAY

bell_labs, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone else like the prepackaged servings of instant grits? I am a huge fan.

Abbott, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

What I don't understand about "instant" oatmeal is that it only takes like a couple of minutes less to cook than regular oatmeal.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

I used to buy the Quaker stuff that comes in the cylindrical container, and it would have a perfumed laundry detergent taste. Maybe it was just the store or truck that it was shipped on, and some strong deodorant bar soaps' scents permeated the cardboard?

dell, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

Instant oatmeal is good for meatloaf in place of puller-apart bread.

Abbott, Monday, 10 December 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

we have a big box of individual packets of this at work but i haven't eaten any of it yet. it's good winter food though.

but srsly, real oatmeal with non-instant oats should take at least 20-30 minutes to cook, like cooking rice - otherwise it's not done right and tastes terrible and has uck consistency. done right, oatmeal is some really good stuff. i really only ever eat it at my mom's house at christmastime. she has perfected oatmeal like nobody's business.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

raisins = key
(eff you cooked-raisin haters!)

having the apple cinnamon flavor today, and it's not as bad

bell_labs, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

At church camp everything would get coated in bug spray. We had a huge bag of Swedish fish in our tent and they did too, of course, so now Swedish fish taste like bug spray to me and vice versa.

Abbott, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

Much like boxed Mac 'n' Cheese, what makes it good is a bunch of mysterious artificial ingredients that have little resemblance to their natural forebears.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't eat my Quaker this morning and am famiished.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

the smart balance had a weird aftertaste. why did i buy this brand?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

every morning, folks

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Weekday breakfast: Red River cereal (3 ingredients: wheat, rye, flax), mix in a few heaping spoonfuls of cottage cheese for protein, add some raisins and a dash of cinnamon for flavour. Often poured into a thermos and eaten at the workplace. Weekends are for more elaborate foods.

Matt D, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

what are your favorite kinds of instant oatmeal? currently in my cupboard at work are 365 organic apple cinammon, kashi heart to heart apple cinammon, and smart balance omega (variety pack). i like the 365 one best and it was the cheapest. kashi is too sweet and the smart balance is just kind of terrible.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

quaker instant maple and brown sugar

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

quaker oats is wayyy too sugary for me

bell_labs, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

why instant you lazy fucks. can't boil some water?

cutty, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

disgrace

cutty, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

no, i don't have a stove at work. just hot water to mix with packets of oats.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

imma lazy fuck

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes I just tear the corner off a quaker instant pack and eat it dry, then drink some water. Lazy champion.

I DIED, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes i gargle oatmeal with coffee

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

i think it is physically impossible to eat all that dry oatmeal. calling your bluff!

bell_labs, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't say it ws easy.

I DIED, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

do you have a microwave at work?

lauren, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

i have a microwave in my mouth

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

usually when I make instant oatmeal at home I just use really hot tap water (the lazy thing again)

I DIED, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

i have a microwave at work.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

i recommend arrowhead farms instant cereals, then. you can do them on the stove or in the microwave, they're unsweetened so you can add your own stuff, and they're really filling.

lauren, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

oops - arrowhead mills, not farms.

lauren, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

i almost picked up a box of that stuff the other day, but i thought i should finish at least one of my 3 boxes first!

bell_labs, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

remy bean, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

you can microwave regular oatmeal

cutty, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

I like the Quaker Instant Grits, esp the "red eye gravy and bacon" or the name of that gravy.

Abbott, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Good old pellagra diet, all making me gonna die and all.
