T/S: Playstation 2 vs. XBox vs. Gamecube

The boyfriend and I have made the decision to piss our holiday break away with a new game system. But which one? We are leaning toward XBox because his lil'bro has one and we can swap games, plus they have that game where you kill Saddam and we think it would be ace to sit in American flag PJs and triumph over evil.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

F-that, PS2!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2...a (bad-ASS) game system & a DVD player!

Since I purchased mine, my ass has grown in lateral girth exponentially, and I've developed the worst case of carpel tunnel syndrome since the cat's-cradle tournament.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

X-box is overrated and its Microsoft!

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

X-Box is NOT overrated! It has a hard drive! It's a bazillion times faster! The controllers are the size of my head! And _Halo_!!!!

But, then, GameCube has _Metroid Prime_, and is more funny fun. PS2 & XBox are consoles for "serious" gamers.

Those promos for _Operation: Desert Storm_ make me feel dirty. Why I don't get the same feeling when I see promos for a WWII-type game, I dunno. I think I prefer the enemy to be a faceless foreign stereotype, or some faceless home-grown group of radicals - that shot of Saddam in the crosshairs gives me chills.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm such a paranoid conspiracy-theory-retard I've honestly had thoughts that they'd somehow wired the Desert Storm game in such a way that, while we're at home innocently gaming, we're ACTUALLY controlling some robot-drone-death-machine tearing it up in Iraq.

Okay, so it was when I was REAL high, whatever.

And I might buy a GameCube just for Metroid: Prime. I'm that dorky.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

X-Box has The Green Screen of Death. PS2 also has an option for a harddrive, they just don't make it yet [last time I was at Best Buy]. I'm very happy with my PS2 myself. GTA3/VC, Solid Snake and GT-Aspec make me a very lazy bastard.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

You're real decision is, essentially:

Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Zelda

vs.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2, GTA4: Vice City, MGS 2

vs.

Halo.

Essentially, the latest cadre of consoles are pretty exciting when it comes to potential, and looking under the hood, but the games that have come out so far are pretty sparse. Those are the 9-10 out of 10 games available for each console. Personally, I'm a franchise whore and also have grown up with Ninty so I would go for that. Halo is phenomenal but then you complete and you turn round and realise 'Oh no! There are no other games for this console' but I mean, what a game it is. PS2 well if you can handle all the ideological bullshittyness it has going for it and you want the second best football game ever made (probly the best VIABLE game made available at the moment) and some crazy ass not-as-good-as-it-shoulda-been neckbreakin action and probly contender for the Nation's Pulse is throbbing to the sounds of you game then go for PS2. GTA4 will keep YOU occupied but yr friends, look, they're sleeping.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

There's also price, what are they retailing at? (To be perfectly honest, if I were you, or rather if you were a GAMER, I'd buy a second hand one AND try pick up a fully loaded SNES or N64 off E-Bay).

Try for SNES:

Super Mario World, err, search the archives here for the SNES thread.

For N64:

2 Zeldas, F-Zero, ISS98, Mario, Goldeneye (though if you get a new gen console and you like Goldeneye then Timesplitters 2 might be to yr fancy), and a host of other great games.

Avoid: Gran Turismo of any description.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

N64=the console with one good game. Gran Turismo=classic

david=well known lunatic when it comes to video games.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

You say that to my face, FITZY!

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I just remembered. Instead of a SNES you could buy a Gameboy advance but you'd be better with a SNES (bigger library of games, suits your veggin out needs), whatever.

re N64: What game, ronan?

GT = booooooooooooooooring.

haha, guess what I'm getting for christmas, ronan.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

GBA is kinda crap, I wish I'd spent the money I spent on mine on beer cds and clubbing like all my other money, what a stupid mule I was.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

P2 + Tony Hawk 4 = a very pale nick with sore thumbs

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

tony hawks 4 = k-cool.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Hitman 2 for PS2 is my latest rental. Fucking ace, but hard as hell.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2 has the Op. Desert Storm game as well Teeny.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, another consideration = pad ergonomics. GC has best pad; yr getting RSI from the X-Box's Hippo-pad; the PS2 = the Ford Escort, dependable, standard shape, a bit more fancy now than it used to be, boring.

dwh (dwh), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh excellent chris. I hope everyone understands that we're sitting in our jammies ironically. The boyfriend thinks it will be funny to look back on in ten years. He likes 1st-person shooters a lot but I like mario-style walkabout and do things games. He is a boy, I am a girl, can I make it any more obvious?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

you can get both on ps2, believe me its the only way i get my wife to tolerate video games.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 12 December 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

gawd I want them all now. But I forgot PS2 is Sony, and I've loved all my Sony products so now leaning that way. Give me more arguing please!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 13 December 2002 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

hitman 2 is bullshit...i enjoy a good stealth game and all the strategy it entails but playing 20 levels attempting to fire a max of 1 or 2 bullets each stage is sucking the goddamn life out of me...fuck this game...a waste of my time and money

--, Friday, 13 December 2002 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2 - good selection of games, (esp GTA Vice City, which is just awesome), but pricy add-ons (mem cards are over £20)

X-Box - Better spec, but lacks games. also has hard drive and better DVD capability (apparently). and yes Halo is very good. (Top offer at the moment in GAME and Toys'r'us, £200 inc 4 very good games)

Game cube - if you like Zelda & Mario then yes by all means it will be superb. But no DVD, and like SEGA will prob just produce 1 good game every year. (having said that I may just buy one for Zelda alone, as it looks fantastic)

GBA - ok, like a mini SNES and you can buy the original Super Mario games, Yoshi's Island is also great. Although everyones complaining about how you can't see the screen very well, I don't see it as a major problem.

I only have a PS2 and GBA, but I'll be buying the other two soon as they all have fecking ace games.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 13 December 2002 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone know why my PS2 refuses to play DVDs in the correct aspect ratio (widescreen films are stretched vertically to fill the screen)?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 09:39 (twenty-three years ago)

You can change the way the picture is displayed. Look at the manual, or press Select and muck about.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 13 December 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

your right about Hitman 2, I played for 4 hours last night and got no where . fuck this game.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

You can change the way the picture is displayed. Look at the manual, or press Select and muck about.

Yeah, that didn't seem to work. It won't let me switch the screen size setting.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Which ones have the decent Rallye and Formula 1 games? I'm leaning Nintendo otherwise.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

PS2 has the best of all.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I have heard rumors the Gamecube might be discontinued pretty soon, not so sure it would be a great investment.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 13 December 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Hitman 2 is incredible. Lots of depth, and the quality of the AI puts GTA: Vice City to shame. And it's not *that* hard. Try The Getaway if you want to see a real tough game.

Jason J, Friday, 13 December 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a GameCube. It sucks. Metroid Prime isn't even all that good--I'd much rather play Halo. If I could go back in time, assassinate the past-me that was about to purchase the GameCube and take his place (causing no doubt all kinds of spacetime wackiness), I'd buy an XBox. Then I'd buy that Buffy game.

adam (adam), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Dreamcast! It has lots of good games and you can get them super cheap online. It's a dead system though, so nothing new again, ever.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 13 December 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Other good X-Box games - Tom Clancy's Secret Ops (from 1st hand experience), Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon (from word of mouth). That's THREE! I am eagerly awaiting the newest version of EA's NHL. I also eagerly await the development of a baseball game that will not bore me to death or cause my controller to make boom-boom with neighboring pieces of furniture. (Bring back Baseball Stars!!)

I also like X-Box Live, simply because you can talk to other people while playing and disguise your voice! The idea of talking a blue streak while sounding like a kid makes me laugh.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

All-Star Baseball 2003 for PS2 is a great game. Wasted my whole summer.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

EA NHL 2003, is not much of an improvement over 2002. Weak offseason remains and the graphics are exactly the same. Takes a lot of tweaking to get it the way you want it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Plus, if you're a RPG fan, the PS2 is your lord and master. It also has Rez and Ico, in their individual ways flawless games which the others can't match. Second place goes to Gamecube: Mario, Starfox, maybe Metroid, and Legend of Zelda, which I am counting the days until. There are a lot of days. Xbox has Halo, Splinter Cell (except there's no way I'm playing a game that right-wing) and the oft-forgotten Jet Set Radio Future.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, you do have to ignore the Cold-War-glory-days tone in playing stuff like Splinter Cell - it IS endorsed by Tom Clancy, after all. But, hell, the thrill of the kill surely supercedes any need for open-minded political correctness, yes? Of course it does!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 December 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew sums up the problem of the Gamecube in 7 words: "which I am counting the days until". Sadly.

dwh (dwh), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I have only played PS2 but I liked it a great deal. GTA is a marvel, of course, and there is a grebt street basketball game as well. My only complaint: My favorite games are alla the James Bond games, and in Agent Under Fire, one cannot play the multiplayer missions against AI opponents. Does anyone know if the new Bond for PS2 corrects this unfortunate problem?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 13 December 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

well, it depends on the games you like. If you like fun/silly games, gamecube is best. If you like "serious" games with more realistic action, PS2 or Xbox. If you like sports games they are all pretty much equal as i think the EA titles are avaiable for all of them. Personally I like the fun/silly stuff, mario and all that, so I got a GC, plus i think it is the best when it comes to simultaneous multiplayer games. Nintendo has been a bit slow releasing some of their proprietary games but it seems to be picking up a bit with metroid out and zelda out in japan, and a bunch of other titles have been announced. also, seems like it has taken developers a little longer to get going on the GC platform (I believe Splinter Cell is coming out on GC in march or thereabouts for example). But basically, if you do some research, there are plenty of good games for all 3 systems. Also, the GC does not double as a DVD player, but I already had a DVD player anyway so it's no big deal...it's also the least expensive for the basic system.

g (graysonlane), Friday, 13 December 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

NHL2K3 by Sega blows EA's NHL 2003 out of the water. I've always bought EA's hockey games, but this year I played both and Sega's game is just far more realistic and far more fun. EA has flashier graphics, but thats about it. Also, World Series Baseball for Xbox is great.

Very happy with my xbox...

KV, Saturday, 14 December 2002 06:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Giving the problems I have had with my lifestyle, there might well be a case for getting rid of the PS2 (and the N64, and the Dreamcast, and the PlayStation), and getting a GameCube, if they can guarantee only releasing two great and replayable games per year.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 14 December 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

jason j: comparing hitman2 and gta:vc is ridiculous...they're not even the same genre or style of gameplay...maybe you should be comparing hitman2 with metal gear solid...hitman 2 has an incredibly weak storyline and just cos the ai is clever doesn't mean the game isn't boring...

by the way gta:vc is genius...it takes gta3 and bumps everything else up a notch and does it perfectly...hopefully the next step to take the gta franchise to another level is rockstar games making it an mmorpg with people working together as a gang, staking territory, turf/gang wars, and the like...

--, Saturday, 14 December 2002 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think comparing GTA:VC and Hitman 2 is 'ridiculous' - at the end of the day they're both third-person shooters. I admit, there are many differences in the manner they're pitched: Hitman 2 rewards skilful stealthiness, while GTA:VC rewards skilful all-out violence. But I'd played the previous GTA through to the end, and I didn't find Vice City brought much that was new. Didn't hate it, by any means... but I thought bits of it were shoddy and overambitious, and I was bored of it in two weeks.

I've kept going back to Hitman 2, though. It's got a level of subtlety that I don't find in many Playstation games. Some might find that boring, but I found it added depth: you can play missions over and over, finding new routes every time. And although the actual killing is measured, when it does all kick off, I found this rarity magnified the excitement: a glimpse of stocking is shocking, and all that.

For the record, I hated Metal Gear Solid. Oh well, takes all sorts

Jason J, Sunday, 15 December 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

No it doesn't Jason, Metal Gear Solid is rubbish. Buy a DVD if you want to watch a film.

I loved GTA3 but Vice City, while brilliant, seems a bit untested, some of the missions are too easy and some of them are back-to-the-shop rock hard. I will pay good money to anyone willing to shoot out all the windows in the mall for me. Hitman 2 is seriously tempting me, I've read many good things about it. Also has anyone got The Getaway? The demo's excellent, swearing, shooting and driving through a meticulously recreated London.

The Gameboy Advance is useless for those of us with a SNES plus Zelda and Yoshi but extremely essential otherwise. Also I'll be buying a Gamecube when the new Zelda comes out - have you played Super Monkey Ball? Oh yes.

Mike (mratford), Sunday, 15 December 2002 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

THANK GOD someone mention Jet Set Radio Future! This game is the SOLE reason I want an XBox. (No, I don't care about MGS, GTA or Halo.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend got Gamecube and regretted it. There have been maybe a grand total of 3 interesting games to come out for it. I vowed never to buy nintendo again after N64's shitty games.

All the complaint's made against X-Box make no sense. "It's too big!" SO? It's not like you're going to be using it as a javalon. "The controller is too big!" Uh... I've used it. Unless you have comically small doll hands, no it's not.

That said, PS2 is the best. I mean, GTA 3: Vice City? You will not beat that.

David Allen, Sunday, 15 December 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

PS - When I said "Special Ops", I MEANT "Ghost Recon", obviously.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 16 December 2002 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

what do you do with a javalon??

Aaron A., Monday, 16 December 2002 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I just sold my Gamecube, and was thinking of getting a PS2 or XBox with the money. Anyone know if there's a post-xmas price drop in the works?

It was an error. I should have bought it. I am getting BAD withdrawal symptoms, I am going to miss all the christmas events and all the animals will hate me and my town will be full of weeds and frankly I wonder whether I should just delete my town and start again, ARGH!

It's weird, I've recently lost all desire to play Xbox/Halo 2. All I've been doing is playing FF1 and Mario Kart on GBA. I wonder if there's some sort of pill I can take for this.

Are there any good long-term geekoid role-playing games for Xbox?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) or its sequel.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

nintendo is the best video game company in history.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

And just had it's best year ever, says Edge. Mario, Wario, Donkey Kong, two Zeldas, two Metroids and another Pikmin. And all great in different ways.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 31 December 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

My best mate's PS2 (on which I've been playing GTA:SA religiously recently) finally stopped working yesterday - there were more and more hangs, error messages and slowdowns, then it stopped working altogether. Do you reckon he'll be able to find another one in the shops?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 31 December 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

no

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 31 December 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ive called two dozen places for a ps2. i will maybe go to NYC to find one. what the hell, i dont even really play that many games.

kephm, Saturday, 1 January 2005 03:58 (twenty-one years ago)

There are no PS2s or Xboxes in NYC! I'm still waiting to be gifted. I'm having total issues, though: Xbox seems like the right choice capability-wise, but I'm a simple man who just loves cutesy platform games, and so maybe a Gamecube is the right thing to do?

nabiscothingy (nory), Saturday, 1 January 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

gamecube is a really disappointing platform.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 1 January 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 1 January 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
So I had an Xbox and it worked for approximately two days before ceasing to recognize discs entirely. I could just exchange it at the store for another one, but there are no Xboxes in Manhattan.
