The reason my mom always beats me is that she always does these things where she puts down 2 letters that spell like "EM" and "EN" and 3 other words that somehow add up to 60 points. So... EM and EN... I hate you!

Cyst, gym, hymn, myth and wynd (Scots lane) for starters - there are way more but this dictionary I've just looked in is tiny. 'Y' is only a vowel when it appears as the last letter in a word.

Y is a vowel when it acts as a vowel - it's rarely a consonant other than when it starts a word.

There is a school of thought which also claims that "w" is a vowel under certain circumstances, like "cwm". I have never been enrolled in that particular school, however.

What's the name for those words like "hmm" and "er" and "oops" that aren't actually words? Don't they disallow those in Scrabble because it makes it too easy to come up with stuff?

the only words that are disallowed are those not in the Official Scrabble Dictionary.

the regulation is based on usage, commonality, etc.

you'd be surprised some of the words that aren't in the scrabble dictionary (maybe just me)...
