Christmas Drinks

Most of us eat food at Christmas that we don't eat at other times of the year, e.g. the Christmas pudding, mince pies etc etc. But do you find yourself drinking things that you would never drink at other times of the year as well?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 16 December 2002 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I drank sloe gin on Saturday.

Sam (chirombo), Monday, 16 December 2002 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The two main drinks which I consume during the festive season which I don't drink at other times are Drambuie and Stone's Ginger Wine. A few years ago I got a recipe for Brandy Mousse from a friend which was really good but I subsequently lost it. After a bit of googling I found a new recipe and so went out to buy some brandy. I suspect I shall be swigging a bit whilst making the mousse.

Mulled wine, which I really like, but never normally drink.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 16 December 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I drank 4 Baileys, a Snowball AND a long vodka last night. Do I win?

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 16 December 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 16 December 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend P was drinking sherry when I popped in to see her the other evening (and she had slippers on!)

Rum Nog (Egg Nog + dark rum) is Christmas only drink.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot apple cider, but that's more a fall/winter drink than a Christmas-only beverage.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Baileys, no idea why but I only seem to drink it at Christmas

smee (smee), Monday, 16 December 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Just had some rum nog on Friday. mmm...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 16 December 2002 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Aquavit between courses. ugh.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 16 December 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I second both mulled wine and aquavit; the latter not necessarily between courses.

OleM (OleM), Monday, 16 December 2002 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Baileys, port, ginger wine - pref. Crabbies but it's difficult to obtain for some reason (actually I haven't checked its availability yet this year).

David (David), Monday, 16 December 2002 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

While Irish Coffee is GREBT anytime of the year I only have it at christmas along with Bailey's/Irish Mist/Khalua & Coffee.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only times I've drunk sherry have been between halves of choral concerts that I was singing in.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 16 December 2002 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

This weekend I found out that Tia Lusso has half the fat of Baileys.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah! But Tia Lusso also has those bloody annoying adverts so I will stick with Baileys. (And I have already fallen off the no chocolate wagon since the arrival of a large box of Belgian seashells in the office, so I may as well be hung for a sheep and stay a blimp until January...)

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Archel. Why did you get on that pesky no-chocolate wagon in the first place? You know it'll never take you anywhere. Yes, Tia Lusso adverts are rubber than brass itself, and anyway things that aren't ultimately lardy are anathema to the Christmas spirit, shurely.

My house are having PROPER CHRISTMAS DINNER tonight and I have just conceived a craving for mulled wine. Hmmm, do I have any cinnamon sticks left at home...? Nyarrgh no cloves! Mixed spice will have to do.

Also doing TWO Secret Santa efforts today - one at home, one at the office. I am, however, crying off the (immensely tedious shenanigins associated with) office Xmas lunch - they're all going for pasta someplace. I shall remain here and cry. And probably loaf a fair bit.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

You're right about the wagon Liz. It would have been a bumpy ride. Now that I'm stuffing myself again, I can get excited about the fact that Matt is going to make mincemeat ravioli out of Delia! Er, I mean, out of Delia's book. I hope he makes them before Thursday so I can bring some up for you poor starving Londongers...

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Ravioli made out of Nigella wld be tastier, and probably have chocolate ganache splurging teasingly out of them when you stuck yr 'fork' in. Eww. I made Nigella's chocolate cake last nite for Xmas dinner shenanigins. It has condensed milk in it. Phwoarr.

I'm definitely making mulled wine tonight. I'm banking on it clearing my congestion.

nine years pass...

these are the best kind of drinks

f (Lamp), Thursday, 22 November 2012 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

four years pass...

Rum is fantastic for Christmas. For a sweet tooth, I highly recommend rum and cream soda served over ice.

Red wine is, of course, a holiday tradition, and a lively one at that; but for a more experimental take, try cognac served with citrus flavors to brighten things up.

And of course, there will always be Bulleit.

Do not forget that on these very special days, the time for drinks is anytime after high noon!

Rum in coffee is good as well - before high noon :p

am on my second dark and stormy - Bacardi Spiced so old it may have lost all alcoholic properties plus Old Jamaica ginger beer - nearly as light and creamy and frothy as a proper Snowball

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 24 December 2016 19:24 (nine years ago)
