I use a pen. The bullet model.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, Sterling, they are supposed to be pointy at one end.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

oh shit. that explains why it hasn't been working.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

HB or 2H preffered.

(Don't actually mind which or which grade because I'm not actually any kind of expert, but mmm, Staedtler. This may just be because it's such a nice word.)

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like putting staples into pencils. I'm evil.

I only really use gel pens.

But HB is the canon.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Pilot gel pens = love also.

Hmm, tomorrow is last posting day, do I write some Christmas cards with my lovely new metallic blue and purple gel pens or do I do the database that I should have finished weeks ago and have completely no excuse for not having done? Hmmmmm.

(I love stationery, anyone would think I still drew or wrote or actually ever used any of it or something.)

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Is tomorrow really last posting day? Eek!!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

We're not allowed to post here after tomorrow?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

jel: Um. No, I screwed up. Today was the last posting day for second class, 21st for first class. Apologies for any confusion. See http://www.royalmail.co.uk/ -> Christmas 2002 posting dates (they've made it awkward to link directly, sorry).

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i had this set as a kid:

Aaron A., Wednesday, 18 December 2002 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I want one of those big red primary printer pencils.

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

As Long as its got clicky Lead, Its OK

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the 2b or beyond
my grandfather invented the propelling pencil (pacer)! i really don't like those at all!

minna (minna), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Monday is actually the last posting day for first class UK.

I hate clicky lead. It's never sharp enough and it snaps.

Pencils don't seem to be a part of office stationery anymore. There was one at my old job but no one had a sharpener. I guess biros are cheaper.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Pencils are for people who fuck up and don't want to admit it even though everybody knows. I once took a Sociology exam with a Sharpie (a regular one, not the fine point model) and got a B+. But then again that was sociology. I've had lots of other kinds of fun with sharpies and paint markers but that's the only one that produced quantifiable results.

Anything you can easily erase was probably not worth writing in the first place. Bah. Oh, and Pilot gel pens are excellent, I agree.

Tom Millar (Millar), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

what the hell is a sharpie? does it have to do with mods and rockers?

minna (minna), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

He has made that word up.

Pilot gel pens are very good though.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 19 December 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

People, people! This is my thread to talk about pencils! Take your newfangled "pen" flim-flam to some thread that cares. Hrumph.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 19 December 2002 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

http://pencilcase.cside.com/lamy/lamy.jpg

It's the one on the bottom. The one on the top is my pen.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 19 December 2002 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

My pencils are red and black ones like Rebecca's. HB. We don't have pencils in the stationery cupboard - I had to order a dozen special like.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 19 December 2002 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Sod the database R.

Mine is the horrible multicolored thing I've been writing your Christmas cards in. Yuk.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 19 December 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Sharpies are a kind of permant marker favoured by musicians and other people who have to write out set lists endlessly.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I have two, both stolen from hotels. One from the Mal Masion in Newcastle and one from St Martin's Lane in London. I have never stayed in St Martin's Lane though.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 19 December 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Muji pens/pencils and Rotring ones too. Flat-sharing with architects will do that to a person. Also as a leftie pencils are a big dud.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 19 December 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron, you brought memories of my childhood rushing back like Barry Sanders, er, ugh, wait, sorry about that. But, yeah, I had that same set of pencils when I was a kid. Wish I still did.

Colin Saunders (csaunders), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron A that pencil set is the BOMB!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah I would just hold them and smell them and stare at them for extended periods of time when I was a kid. The picture doesn't do justice to the colors.

You can still almost always find a set on ebay -- that's where I nabbed the pic. I think I'm gonna reclaim my NFL pencils and an Intellivision when I scrounge up the cash.

Aaron A., Thursday, 19 December 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy, socialists are opposed to pencils? I confess that I haven't read Das Kapital, but I'd sort of imagined it was about economics and the forces of history and the means of peoduction, rather than what one should write with.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I love my Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser. I went to Staples and nearly bought a four pack of them. I barely even use pencils.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 19 December 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
Also -- I prefer work done in pen. I don't own a pencil. I can't remember the last time I owned one.

-- NoTimeBeforeTime (mbvarkestra197...), March 27th, 2006 1:53 PM. (Barry Bruner) (later) (link)

You're nuts. Do you own eraseable pens?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:18 (twenty years ago)

crossing out is more honourable

mark s (mark s), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:30 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Tracer Hand OTM - Black Warriors.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 27 March 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Pilot Gel Pens really ARE the best.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:04 (twenty years ago)

I like an H or 2H if I'll be inking later. I like Bs in the range of 4 to 6 for modelling.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Isn't "yr" Welsh for "the"?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Pilot Gel pens are to fat and blobby for this left-hander. I'm all about the Pilot G-Tec C4. It costs more, but they're not kidding when they call it a needle-point. Do NOT use it to clean under your nails. YOU WILL BLEED.

Mike W (caek), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I've just decided I'm opposed to the pencil in pen form, plasiticy nonsense. I wish everything was wooden.

David Orton (scarlet), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:53 (twenty years ago)

WHY would you use a pen to clean your nails????

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I think this is what happens when someone is a boy.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Pilot G-Tec OTM btw
(for writing with).

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:34 (twenty years ago)

all my (dark blue, new) pencil says on it is HB in silver. minimalist chic. fuck knows where it came from: i found it in my drawer today, serendipitously.

oh, hang on: next to the HB it says "A4" in tiny engraved letters.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I guess you do it once, and you never make the same mistake. You either end up bleeding or covered in ink. Story of my life.

Mike W (caek), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:50 (twenty years ago)

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

.9 mm mechanical forever
i have made the switch from regular hb and never could stand most mechanical pencils but thanks graphic designer at work for showing me the .9 mm way as it is the way forward

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

prefer a pencil without the clip, a pointless addition that I've never used and it rubs against the bottom of my thumb.

So at the moment i'm loving one of those old 'segmented' pencils where instead of sharpening it you just remove the nib and another just falls and slots in it's place. They do multicoloured ones too, when they're sharp they're the business!
