I didn't get this when I first heard it, over thirty years ago. I was too young and naive. It is based on the notion that women's genitalia smell like fish, especially during their period. It seems to me to be largely untrue, and I've never heard jokes/comments based on it other than from obvious misogynists.

You don't see many fish shops around any more, do you? I can remember frequently being dragged into MacFisheries by my mother when I was a small child. I hated that shop. I hated the way rows and rows of fish lay on slabs of ice and stared at me open-mouthed and with cold, glassy eyes. *shudder*
