is this a very common request? i ask because a couple of years ago a man called omar said this to me, which struck me at the time as a very specific invitation. and just now i saw a preview for the latest leonardo di caprio movie in which he makes the same request, verbatim! are both omar and leonardo in fact quoting someone else? what is it about steak? i remember a scene in a book where a small japanese woman devours a very large, very rare, bloody steak without embellishment, and this is considered very sexy. carnal vs. carnivorous knowledge?

Perhaps the subtext is that it will be a dinner of some quality? If someone invited me out for a steak dinner I'd be delighted.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 23 December 2002 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Monday, 23 December 2002 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It's very '50s, isn't it? I would hold out for *Kobe* steak...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 23 December 2002 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i would hold out for a steak with some sort of marvelous french sauce like bearnaise. or a good black peppercorn sauce, which actually consists of only eggs butter and mayonaise.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 23 December 2002 05:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a feeling he's quoting something. Could it be a gangster movie? Very faint bells are ringing...

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 23 December 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

chris (chris), Monday, 23 December 2002 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Girl, I'll treat you so nice--I'll take you anywhere you want--Denny's, Sizzler--anything--and hell, you can have whatever you want, with the WORKS; Fried Chicken, Steak 'n' potatoes. YOU NAME IT. I'm your moldable hunk of man clay, and you're my favorite sculptress.

minna (minna), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 02:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I will take you ALL out for a steak dinner! I don't eat steak though, it makes me sick. But we shall still go! Who wants to come? The catch is you have to come to uptown NYC, but I am taking you out! After drinks, though, you are on your own. But the steak!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 05:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought it was just like saying "I'd like to take you for a ride in my *BMW*," or "Come to the party at my summer home in the *Hamptons*."

Dan I., Tuesday, 24 December 2002 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

It's like asking "Would you like to go out for a walk in the leaves with me?". Be careful.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heard shaggy tell the rest of the gang that he'd buy them all steak dinners if one of the phantoms turned out to be who he thought it was. OK?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG is OTM. As usual.

Mandee, Tuesday, 24 December 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heard shaggy tell the rest of the gang that he'd buy them all steak dinners if one of the phantoms turned out to be who he thought it was.

This is definitely a proposition.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The catch is you have to come to uptown NYC

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)
