I didn't know he was public school-educated and the son of British diplomat?

What *didn't* you know about the late Joe Strummer?

WHat? Is he dead?

Mike Hanle y (mike), Monday, 23 December 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't know I thought he was the greatest of the punks: perhaps I'd never thought about it hard enough till today.

I don't want to underplay things but I always thought he had a great profile. Very strong nose.

Ananova

That explains why my brother's been playing The Clash all morning.

Graham (graham), Monday, 23 December 2002 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

It could just have been one of the *creepy* coincidences?

Lara, Monday, 23 December 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't know I thought he was the greatest of the punks

The point being made on the news by the ppl commenting (inc. Geldof) was that the Pistols, for all their influence, were a manufactured band and that there was something echt abt the Clash.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 23 December 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

joe strummer never meant shit to me

Queen G (Queeng), Monday, 23 December 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

wow....that's sad.

doom-e, Monday, 23 December 2002 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

WHat? Is he dead?

Indeed, Hanley....of a heart attack, yesterday. Funny thing is that I was too young for punk (on its first dive), so I got to learn about the Clash in retrospect from older relatives and mates.

I still count "Train In Vain" as a fave.

I was never the biggest Clash fan, but you'd had to have been living under a rock to miss the huge impression they made on the music scene.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 23 December 2002 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i didnt know he died either. what a bummer :-(

donna (donna), Monday, 23 December 2002 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Never really liked anything he played on or wrote but still, it's a bummer when anyone dies.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 23 December 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Its a shame he died so young. His last album seemed promising. I think he's great, great lyrics. I liked his music since I was 15. Well, we all go someday.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 01:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it was CNN or MSN or some such had a poll, what is your fave clash song:

Train in Vain
Rock the Casbah
Should I Stay or Should I Go?
English Civil War

Jesus wept.

Hunter (Hunter), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 03:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Feels like something is over even though I haven't listened to a Clash album since 1979 and couldn't tell you what his last band or album was called. Thought he'd be around forever, elder statesman of shouty white guys with guitars....

Lord Marmite, Tuesday, 24 December 2002 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard it on the radio and thought they said Jerry Springer had died

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 05:13 (twenty-three years ago)

now that would be a true tragedy

Queen G (Queeng), Tuesday, 24 December 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Despite the title I wouldn't mind having "Straight to Hell" playing while crossing the Styx, it's a beeootiful tune!
