Mean Arena got very rub indeed once they got bored with the basic violence-ball premise.

The future sport bit of Mean Team was a good larf, but it then turned into the worst ever 2000AD story.

I'm too young to remember Harlem Heroes or Inferno... what were they like?

dunno, I didn't read 2000AD then either. Does BOING count as a sport?

there was a great JD story once about a future sport which combined chess, a general knowledge gameshow, and american football. Nice.

I remember Inferno. Bellardinelli did the art, which wasn't his best ever. The fact that all the equipment used in this rollerball rip-off sport was made out of what looked like melting butter didn't help. Neither did the fact that it suddenly ended for no reason with everyone dying horribly in the space of a panel. I suspect the only reason Giant survived was to spawn Judge Dredd's sidekick - if he hadn't made that vital oddyssey into the bedroom he'd have been in the ground too and a poetic caption would have done the hem-hem 'mourning'.

MUCH better was DEATH GAME 1999 in Action weekly, which was also a rollerball rip but this one played by physchotic prisoners. Ended weedily as I remember after 'comics eat our kids' fiasco with all the good guys let out of prison - they were innocent all along - and the bad guys crushed to death under gigantic gore-blocking sound effects.

MEAN ARENA was notable for going madder and madder as they started to feature 'readers designs' and the squad found themselves fighting a team of ant-men led by a witch. Or something. With absolutely nobody keeping score.

Bout time future sport came back...
