Cockfighter: Classic or Dud

Just in time for Christmas...a thread on the feel-good family classic that truly captures the spirit of the holidays like no other. I mean, why do they even bother with "A Christmas Carol" and "It's a Wonderful Life"? Shouldn't they just show this one instead?

Also, Cockfighter has the single, best 'user review' I think I've ever read on the International Movie Database:

"It's no wonder this film was banned in the UK. Never before have I seen such a harrowing tale of cockfight obsession. Since seeing this movie, I have taken to the road with my prize cock, Ray-Ray, and we have won many battles. This movie has truly inspired me to become a cockfighter at the caliber of Harry Dean Stanton's character. (Steve Railsback is an acting tour-de-force as well. Not since his role as Charlie Manson, the great one, has he shown such versatility and depth.)

Oh, and Ray-Ray says, "Hi!" (Rudy is available for Cockfighter II should the need arise.)"

One of the best mute protagonist films!

The disc had a pretty fair Warren Oates mini-doc on it.

I liked the book, at least the cockfighting parts, but if I remember correctly there was also some bullshit about playing the guitar, which keeps it out of the running for best Charles Willeford book.
