pomegranates

Eating them is a difficult and time-consuming process. You end up with hundreds of tiny seeds, and sticky bloodlike juice all over your hands. The fruit inside is sweet, but is it worth going to all that trouble for? Or are we just attracted to the ritual because it seems like such an exotic way to eat fruit?

You can cut them in half and then just whack 'em with the handle of the knife. This is a lazy way.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 26 December 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-but you still have to pull apart the kernels, and spit out the seeds of each one you eat.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 26 December 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I have always thought of them as the fruit of dandys. No, they are not worth the effort in fruit rockist terms.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 26 December 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't spit out the seeds, just eat them. Then a little pomegranate tree will grow in your tummy.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 26 December 2002 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

They are lovely, no wonder N. is a pomegranate playa hata.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 26 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I always think of them as the fruit of parables, and thus will never eat one.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 26 December 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

My dear Helena loves pomegranates.

Is this what I'm supposed to do, Graham?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 27 December 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Nick. Thank you.

Graham (graham), Friday, 27 December 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
i just had one for the first time in years and they're a total waste of time. They do taste good. Genetic engineering to thread.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 27 January 2006 01:57 (twenty years ago)

not a waste of time. you are impatient.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 27 January 2006 02:47 (twenty years ago)

i won't argue with you there. they are tasty.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 27 January 2006 03:06 (twenty years ago)

Pomegranates are easy!

1. You eat the seeds.
2.To get to the fruity kernel bits, you fill up a big bowl with water, and rip them apart underwater. The fruity kernel bits will sink to the bottom; the lacy white integument bits will float--pick those out. Strain the whole thing through a colander, put the juicy red fruity bits in a plastic container and keep it in the refrigerator.

Want me to explain how to eat mangos?

That Marks & Sparks advert on telly at the moment for the blueberry and pomegranate fruit salad looks mouthwatering.

They're the new bananas... apparently

Dittoismus (Dada), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

I wish they were as cheap as bananas.

64 oz. of pomegranate juice for $5.50! Tasty enough to glug, but probably best taken a shotglass at a time for antioxidant & other health properties.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

that's a pretty good deal for 64oz.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I understand the under-water method, but they still take too much time to get into and then eat. You buy one and think, Okay, I'm going to eat a pomegranate later, as if it's kind of an event. You don't do that with bananas, usually. Perhaps good while watching tv/movie though.

pomegranates are so hot right now

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 27 January 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I recognize the good price for the juice (it was at Costco), but as the guy who does the grocery shopping and writes the checks, I was a little dismayed to see my wife and daughter yonk it down in four servings. (I R skinflint.)

Ok fucking a guys get this – my mom in law moved into a place with a pomegranate tree and guess who's gonna get a couple BUCKETS of them? Us! Us. This is like getting a delivery of freaking gold. This weekend is for me & the poms.

Any wrong she has ever done is forgiven.

existential eggs (Abbott), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

I've seen pom trees around the neighborhood but they've never been over-the-fence enough to make grabbing one not stealing (unlike this apricot tree a few blocks away that made me very happy several weeks ago).

existential eggs (Abbott), Wednesday, 7 October 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

people would always steal our pomegranates and avocados.

carne asada, Wednesday, 7 October 2009 22:18 (sixteen years ago)

Lucky Abbott! The neighbor behind my place in AZ had one that hung over the shared fence (also: limes!). It's like eating jewels, all those red red seed pouches.

One year in Idaho my neighbors peach tree sprouted some peaches, and it's so damn cold up there that peaches never, ever happened. It was amazing. I was thinking about stealing one until I ran into my neighbor and she said, "Did you see? My tree grew six peaches!" Good thing I hadn't stolen from the Count and gotten my ass handed to me!

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 21:42 (sixteen years ago)

plax (I know, right?), Monday, 26 October 2009 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

Just eaten one, they are fucking great.

Pull out a section of the fruit and put it in your mouth then crush it slowly.

and

In Hinduism, one of Lord Ganesha's names is "Bijapuraphalasakta," which means "He who is fond of the many-seeded fruit (the pomegranate)."
