A Turkish Delight (the proper Fry's one with chocolate around it, not that bizarre imitation that you can buy in places like Turkey, where they remove the chocolate and put some powdery stuff on it instead! The fools!). I shall have an ice lolly next.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Saturday, 28 December 2002 04:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish there was a Del Taco here. But I'll be in the land of Del Taco soon enough! I just hope I can convince the people I'm going on tour with that it'll be worth stopping there.

I'm still (still!) hungry (after two attempts at dinner) so maybe I'll make some popcorn. What to top it with, though?

Chris P (Chris P), Saturday, 28 December 2002 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Amstel Light. I haven't actually eaten anything today. Wait, I had 2 chocolate truffles. They were the bomb.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 28 December 2002 08:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I have had far too many turkey sandwiches and am going to burst...

*KABOOM*

DG (D_To_The_G), Saturday, 28 December 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Eating nothing but I'm cooking a mousakka if that counts. Struggling to compromise between 3 totally different recipes (any Greeks in the house?).

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 28 December 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Malteser Celebrations. I've been sick for a while and can feel my stomach begging for some food. Wondering what to do about this now.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 28 December 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

(I'm better now hence the desire for food, there is something special about the first meal after being unable to eat properly for a while)

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 28 December 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

A cheese, leek and onion sandwich. It is the best the vending machine has to offer.

Yet again I lost money because it cost £1.10 and there was 5p credit in the machine. So I put in another 5p and then a pound but it did not like my pound, so I tried another. And another and another. Five in all. I guess it's pound coin tube is full or something. Then I gave up. And it doesn't give you the money back that you've put in. Later I came back from the shops armed with two 50ps, which it accepted. By now someone had used the credit and I had no coins smaller than a 20p, which it took and of course no change available. I'm getting sick of this. It's bloody Christmas.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Do they not have sandwiches in shops in Glasgow?

Graham (graham), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

OK SO I ADMIT IT I LIKE THIS CHEESE, LEEK AND ONION SANDWICH QUITE A LOT AND IT IS GOOD VALUE FOR £1.10 OR IT WOULD BE WITHOUT THE HIDDEN EXTRAS.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The two best sandwich shops are in the West End. That = far too far from the Herald office (which is where I think Nick works). Otherwise: NO sandwich shops in Glasgow. None.

dwh (dwh), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

This is true. We have a stinking Pret A Manger just down the road and that is about it. Some people rate Salle A Manger but I do not and anyway it is too far. Delice De France (you see a pattern here) is a waste of space. The Italian sandwich shop just down the road is OKish but their mozzarella is suspiciously yellow and mild cheddarlike. Marks & Spencer's sandwiches are UPSTAIRS which is quite possibly the stupidest piece of shop management ever and anyway their range is completely lame compared to what you get in London. Egg and Cress is like, their most interesting vegetarian option. THERE IS SO MUCH OF A MARKET FOR A SERIOUS COMPETITOR TO PRET A MANGER IN THIS PART OF TOWN.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Sandwiches are horrible anyway, eat some hot food you lunatics.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I had a cheese and onion pasty earlier. I was going to say, I have resorted to buying things and putting them in the microwave. The 24 hour shops here sell a well priced range of vegetarian pastries, but these go a bit soggy and odd in the microwave. Sometimes I go to the GFT for soup but I had no time for that today.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I just remembered: Sainsbury's Central Nick. It does medium-good sandwiches but they're hardly inspiring. The two best = El Cappucino = a little Italian-run sandwich shop, sandwiches to order, Hot BLT = £1.20. And Heart Buchanan = ludicrous shop, delicatessan, based on French trateur, lovely food, just as I said completely ludicrous (cf Valvona & Crolla or, say, IJ Mellis) = a selection of sandwiches daily at £1.95 a pop or Steak sandwich £3 or Croque Monsieur £3. But, as I say, far too far from Herald central.

dwh (dwh), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm eating chocolate... lots of chocolate, left over from christmas. Drinking luke-warm tea. But thats not the point... the point is that Pret A Manger actually rules all! Why would you dare say otherwise nick? Their christmas lunch sandwich is the bomb and they're much better than a mcdonalds or similar. Failing that.... in glasgow cnetral you can get niceish m&s sandwiches from whsmiths.

Dave (Dave), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

GFT soup = dire testament to the extent a man must go to get (note all important no-modifier, esp no 'good') food in Glasgow city centre.

Pret A Manger sucks a thumb!!! I'm proud that I've never eaten or drunk anything from Starbucks, Costa, Pret A Manger et all.

dwh (dwh), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Even Sainsbury's is too far for me really. I don't want to waste my lunch hour going down there, wandering around cluelessly (any sense of direction I have deserts me when I enter that place - it has no.. corners) and then having to queue up. I used to like their overpriced hot veggie sausage baguettes but they've stopped doing them.

Thank you for the West End tips.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

There's something gloopy and compressed about all Pret sandwiches that does not appeal. I do like their chocopots though.

I'm NOT going to WHSmiths for sandwiches (I'm not even sure if the one on Sauchiehall St does them and anyway I hate WHSmiths and there is always a ridiculously long queue in there).

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah ok... what-ever. I agree starbucks is *shit* But costas ok... and speaking of these places.... you know in glasgow central where the sratbucks stand is? Well, next to that their used to be a soup stand which was VERY good and sold nice fresh garlic bread. Now there is a cornish pastie thingy in it's place which is still very good :) but i miss the soup. :( oh, and you can get decent sandwiches from taste! and uppercrust in there as well.

Dave (Dave), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Note to WHSmiths Glasgow: EMPLOY MORE CHECKOUT STAFF IF YOU WANT ME TO SHOP THERE, FUCKWITS. It's time WHSMiths had a decent competitor. Whatever happened to John Minging?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

he was taken over by smiths

Dave (Dave), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever happened to John Minging?

Note to N.: WH Smiths just changed their signs. See how they're blue an' that?

dwh (dwh), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I HATE THAT SHOP. IT IS MY STARBUCKS. Why don't people get more angry about its crappy overpriced and overpackaged stationery, its complete lack of style in any of its products and its *revolting* selection of greetings cards? It's worse than the sodding Boots monopoly.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Because it does magazines well. But not as well as Borders, but not everywhere has a borders. Worst thing abt WH Smiths = its forays into music and video-game retail. Just... just stop, please.

dwh (dwh), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Borders do magazines?

Although... they also do starbucks. buchannan st does, anyway.

Dave (Dave), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Well yes, I don't even want to think about that. At least Woolies is cheap, cheerful and charmingly chaotic.

Mind you, I have fond memories of buying the Rank and It Takes A Nation Of Millions LPs on their release at the Peckham WHSmiths.

Any moron could do magazines well. How much effort does it take to get magazines delivered to your branches and put them on the shelves. It's money for old rope! *And* their distribution arm screws smaller newsagents.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 28 December 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Not one thing. But that is because I am at the library front desk and Setting An Example.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 16 January 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Currently doing the lambada in my digestive tract is a just-finished brown-bread (with 7 grains!) sandwich with gouda, salad leaves, hard-boiled eggs (I like my eggs the way I like my detective fiction etc.), Dijon mustard and Hellmanns (Light *cough*) mayonnaise...

Very tasty. Although not as much as the previously mentioned stroopwafel, dhal or whisky.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

As always seems to be the case when these threads come to my attention, an ice lolly. I've just noticed that the packaging makes the point that they are "veggie friendly". Do many ice lollies contain meat then? (We can do without any 'sucking on the meat lolly' single entendres, Dan!)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I just tried to eat an entire apple, core and all. I got pretty far down so I could see the seeds but abandoned the effort because I can't imagine biting it right in half or into the part with the stem. Is there a method for apple core eating or do you just have to go for it?
