Take any remnants of previous install out of your hardware profile, unplug your scanner, reboot, and then try installing drivers. It sometimes works. Oh, yeah, and make sure you have the right software from the HP site. They're wankers like that. Good luck, gareth......

Easy solution is to install Win2K.

five years pass...

So I got a Nikon CoolScan 5000ES, and have begun scanning ALL (probably more than 20,000) of my mother's slides and negatives. You can see the first set here:

I would like to ask if anyone here has ever taken on a big project like this, and if so, do you have any suggestions or things that I should watch out for? I'm using VueScan, scanning at 4000dpi. For B&W, I know I have to turn off infrared dust removal (otherwise known as ICE). I'm scanning to full-sized JPEGs. I COULD scan to RAW, but the file sizes would be ridiculous. Anyone think I'm making a mistake?

Also, anyone know of a site where I can get more film profiles for VueScan? For example, VueScan does not have a profile for Ilford FP4.

i wouldn't use jpg unless you only want to show stuff on the web or screen. save everything as Tiffs with LZW compression.

Ugh. Such big files... The pictures are mostly of people and stuff - not very gallery-worthy. What's so bad about JPEG (I know, I asked, you answered...)? Are TIFFs with LZW compressed pretty well?

depends on the picture, but they compress a ton and are lossy. If it's a problem, play with the jpg setting untill you find a good ratio of file size and quality, but anything you do is a loss.
